How To Style Longer Hair for Men

2252 ratings | 499923 views
Styling longer hair on men can be a challenge because their hair doesn’t have enough length to weigh it down for it to stay smooth and controlled…it tends to puff up, so you need to use products to control the density and texture. Discover new professional haircutting techniques https://www.samvilla.com/blog/ It’s also a myth that guys don’t want to use products or a blow dryer, which many male clients use both, and this technique is so easy, anyone can do it. Below are some tips for styling mid to longer hair for men: 1. Product Application: Apply Redken satinwear 02 blow dry lotion (mid length to ends) to towel dried hair with hands to add slip and protect from blow dryer heat – it also adds moisture to hair without making it feel heavy. Then, emulsify Redken for Men grip tight firm hold gel in hands and rake through hair with fingers – it provides good hold without getting crispy or flaky. Do not use a comb, it can fluff hair and add wispy texture. 2. Drying: Use a Sam Villa Light Professional Ionic Blow Dryer with the diffuser attachment on high heat and low air – this dries hair with intense heat without blowing it around which contributes to fluff and frizz. Just hold the diffuser to the top and sides until dry, making sure the style is set before locking it in with the heat. https://www.samvilla.com/products/hair-dryers/professional-ionic-hair-dryer 3. Finishing: Shake Redken fashion waves 07 sea-salt spray, spray on hair and let air dry. This locks the style in so it can be worn for 2-3 days, using more wax, gel or pomade adds excess oil that can weigh hair down too much. When finished, do as little as possible to your hair and minimize washing too. If you shampoo a lot, wait 2-3 days and then scrub with water and conditioner to preserve hair’s natural oils which are the best styling product of all. Washing with shampoo once a week is usually sufficient for most - it saves time and hair looks great, simply readjust the style with fingers when needed. Did you like this video? Michael Phillips (13 days ago)
What's the name of the hair style on the model your using?
Hey Michael, there's not really a specific name for this one like there are for a lot of the shorter barber style haircuts. It's a fairly standard shape for guys with medium length hair though. Lots of stars like Charlie Hunnam and Bradley Cooper have had this look when their hair was longer.
Chakka Boola (25 days ago)
Oh no, I don't own that special dryer. Will I be able to get that hair style now??
Yes, the dryer just helps to minimize the frizz.

What’s with all the products? I’m a Hairdresser with shoulder length hair and I use a little bit of oil on my wet hair and Blowdry it! There’s such a thing as to much product!!!!!
Totally agree Reece. We adjust based on the texture of hair and try to keep our product suggestions to what is needed for the look. On certain hair textures, maybe this would be too much. On the mannequins, they have a really course fuzzy texture that requires a heavier hand. Thanks for your feedback!

What did you do to make your hairline look much less receding in this video, compared with other videos? It's obviously shorter, but that alone wouldn't bring the hairline forward. However you did it would make a good video.
Hey Joe, this is Andrew commenting. I realized that my hair line looks much better when I push my hair forward rather than pulling it back like used to wear it. It allows me to fill in the recession area more.
JP Moore (1 month ago)
It literally looks the same from before you did anything to after you finished
joe doe (1 month ago)
If 'texture' is the feel of the hair you were born with, (fine, course, curly, etc.) which you can't do anything about, what does it mean to CHANGE the texture, either by combing it too much or doing something else to it, i.e. "adding whispy texture" vs. 'defined' texture? I don't understand how you ADD (or take away) texture to hair. See 02:10
We are referring to the visual texture created by the cutting technique, product choice, and styling.

I want to know what people think of longer hair on old guys with a very obvious receding hairline that goes half way back on top of the head. (Not with a pony tail, but something like the length on the head in the video, sides and back.) I'm reminded of Michael Bolton before somebody got him to cut it all off.

wtf xd once a week shampoo ? how does that hair even look at the end of the week
Kamil Kędzierski (1 month ago)
+Sam Villa Hair Tutorials I believe You, u are a professional, i was just surprised because i know how my hair looks without shampooing it everyday. It looks bad :)
It depends on the hair texture. If the hair is fine and gets oily easily or if they are using heavy products that don't rinse out easily, it may require shampooing more often. For people that struggle with frizzy fluffy hair, shampooing less often and just using conditioner in between works really well.
joe doe (2 months ago)
Shampoo once a week? Wow, we've come a long way since the same experts wanted everyone to wash their hair every day.....the more shampoo and conditioner used, the higher their profits.

+Sam Villa Hair Tutorials Good video. Andrew is a good teacher. If I could afford school to become a stylist, I'd want him as a teacher, and I'd also watch every one of your tutorials. Would loved to have seen him when he had long hair to see how he had it styled. Interesting to hear how the extra weight can keep it in place better. That's probably been part of my problem. Long, but not long enough. It's look horrible and every woman tells me how much better I look with short hair, but I just like the feel of longer hair. I'm a musician, not a GQ model or CEO, so go figure. Have you seen the CEO of T-Mobile? His is downright stringy! When you're good at what you do, you can wear it however you want. In the past, I could never wear my hair longer cause it has a slight natural curl on the sides and neck, flipping out in a ridiculous looking way. (no product used, except I had tried mousse but that just encourages the curls). Now, I'll be trying several things to see which category of product works best, then experimenting around within the best category. I've already ruled out the very things Andrew says are not cut out for long hair, including the mildest of finishing cremes which come in the round tub with a screw on cap. I had already decided to try a Redken cream in a tube if nothing else cheaper works well, but I'll look into that one to see what kind of substance it is. (you can't tell from the video). . I'll be trying spray on gel and leave-in conditioner before then. (much cheaper at Walmart). But I won't hesitate to pay more if that's what it takes to get the hold and manageability that I want without the gunk. Whatever I settle on won't even be used once a week. He's right about not combing it too much. When I do it too much as it dries, it removes the substance completely and then there's no hold. I've always preferred just air dry, but that won't work at longer lengths of hair with MY texture which is not fine enough to just fall straight down the way I'd like. (think shaggy). And I ALWAYS have to use a brush and hair dryer to control the wild curls flipping out at the neck. Even then, I'll never get rid of all the curl, but if I can at least control it, it'll actually look the way I want. MILD curl without flipping out to the sides. I'm old enough to remember when the first dryers (which hardly put out any air), first hit the market. They came with a comb and brush attachment, and fluff was in vogue.
Hey Joe, Part of that change too is that people aren't looking for that fluffy "fresh out of the shower" look these days. Even for our guests that like super clean hair, we recommend shampooing less to keep the healthy natural oils in the hair.

with thick hair follicles comes a bit thinner of a hair, though it looks thick, it's really just the fence link thick follicle: i have this type of hair, and it is naturally a bit curly. when i style my hair it looks sharp, but after the water dries the ends flip up and and it generally puffs and becomes unruly (though with a damp of hot water and holding my sides and top for a minute or two, i can manage that flat look, but often times i'm in a rush on my daily schedule, and don't have time to hold it in place for 2-5mins. i use strongish hairspray (not extreme hold but strong) and an axe brand type of putty. i want to keep that sharp, executive look, almost elven (though i would never admit that is partially what i'm going for to mates) with the few strands sharp in front of the ears, sharp straight back with maybe a bit of a few cm curl at the tips of the back, and a nice top knot; situated more horizontal, than vertical my hair is about and inch from my shoulders, and my bangs are down to my throat. Any advice on a fighters/man's man prep? it looks beautiful when it's \sorted --i think---, but when it's all dried and i'm in the scene, or training: it's pretty unruly, feminine, childish, and generally a turn-off ( though some days if i give it a lot of product and attention, it will stay in place, given aforementioned techniques, and products) if you took the time to read all this, and have any wisdom to offer, user or Sam Villa, any tips, and your time; are greatly appreciated

Thank you Andrew for this video! Very informative. So my male client wants to grow his hair out. He has maybe 3 inches on top, maybe 1.5/2 inches on the sides. He can’t really style it no matter what he does. How do you shape it, while preserving length, but he can style it too with low maintenance? He has a little wave to it. Medium density. This might be a dumb question, but I’m new in the industry. 😬 - thank you

Mason Rowlett (1 year ago)
Hey I have this kind of hairstyle but a little more fluffy. I don't know what to do with it because when I lean forward or tilt my head forward it all goes in my face. (My hair is at my lips right now for length) So I put StyleSexyHair Hard Up gel in it and it works ok. But when I'm in class and girls are playing with my hair I can't have that gel in it because you can't even run your hand through it. So what should I do to get it to stay and slick back but also so anyone can run their hands through my hair.

too much hair damage. Would definitely not recommend what he is doing. Go easy on the products as a little goes a long way and as for blowdrying, only blowdry if you are going out and keep the blowdryer much much further away from your hair or otherwise you risk damaging it to the point where it will begin to fall out or not grow in certain areas. I suggest towel drying it by scrunching to the point where it is less damp then you would usually have it when blowdrying. Then, apply a heat protectant and blowdry. My hair is really really thick and wavy and i dont blowdry or use products, i let it airdry after scrunching it a bit then it parts in the middle (as it is a medium length like say prince charming or bradley cooper) then due to the thickness it is really malleable

Rizah Shashivari it's going to get to the "mullety" stage at some point, my hair is pretty long but that's the point isn't it? it works well if your sides and back are of the same length as it won't seem as much of a mullet as it would if the sides were shorter than the back...

I had no idea some people shampooed so infrequently (i.e., once a week)! They don't have oily hair genes, that's for sure.
Brittany Kelly (9 months ago)
It’s not really genes. When you wash your hair, you strip it of natural oil—your scalp will work in overdrive after washing to help retain moisture which protects your hair from damage. The longer you go between washes, you’ll train your scalp to calm down with the oil. Start by washing every other day, and never on weekends (or your days off from work and you’re mostly home). It’s so much healthier for you hair. Washing so frequently damages the scalp, the hair follicles, and makes you more prone to dandruff and breakage! My hair wouldn’t grow past my shoulders in high school, but I finally started washing every other day and now can go three days between washes without oil buildup. My hair brushes the middle of my back now! No split ends or brittle strands. I’ve done this for two years and I’m still trying to go longer between washes.
