Men’s Shoe Essentials | 9 Shoes Every Guy Needs (My Collection)

134 ratings | 2567 views
Shoes are important—perhaps, the most important item of clothing in a man’s wardrobe, which is why I’ve compiled this list of men's shoe essentials. Besides nailing the fit, I’d say that most men should first start with investing in a few quality pairs of shoes. These are the 9 pairs of shoes that I believe will help for you to level up your shoe game. The brown brogue. It will quickly become a staple in any man's wardrobe. It's as versatile as it is stylish. Brogues are characterized by the unique punching or decorative perforations along the shoe's leather uppers. The bottom line: The brown brogue is a cornerstone of the smart casual wardrobe. It can dress up a pair of well-fitting jeans or dress down a tailored suit—serving you well, day or night, from the office to happy hour. 2: The Suede Chukka Surprised it's number two on the list? There's a good reason why. Though not as dressy as brogues in the formality spectrum, it does land above the sneaker. It's been said that the chukka boot is the first dress-casual shoe, which allows for tremendous versatility. The bottom line: Chukka boots straddle the fence between dressy and casual—leaning more so on the casual side. Suits become effortlessly cool with chukkas and your casual options are limitless. 3: The Brown Loafer Casual, comfortable, cool. Dress them up, dress them down. Loafers are your summer go-to. Heck who says you can't wear them year round? Loafers are a summertime staple. The classic weekend shoe that's comfortable, easy to slip on, and super stylish. 4: The Canvas Sneaker Sometimes even the most dapper of men like to go casual. And with the casual aesthetic popular as ever, it's good to have a go-to casual footwear option.   The bottom line: The canvas sneaker is stylish, versatile and a great flip-flop alternative. It's the summertime go-to for when you're keeping it really casual. 5: The Oxford or Derby A black Oxford or Derby is typically the first formal pair of shoes a guy owns. I know mine was. But it was of the square-toed variety which I do not suggest. I recommend a more classic rounded toe Oxford or Derby. The bottom line: The Oxford and Derby are men's style essentials. They're sleek, they're dressy, and separate the men from the boys. 6: The Brown Leather Boot (lace-up) Depending on the style, you can easily add a bit of sartorial sophistication or rebellious ruggedness to your look. The bottom line: They are utilitarian, but still look great. The perfect fall/winter shoe option. THE NICE TO HAVES • The Monkstrap • The Chelsea • The Casual Sneaker IN CLOSING A good outfit and good shoes must always go together, you shouldn’t have one without the other. I hope this was helpful in illustrating why these shoes made my list of essential shoes for men. - - - - - - - - - - - - ✖Let's Connect W E B S I T E: https://gentlemanwithin.com T W I T T E R: http://twitter.com/thegentwithin F A C E B O O K: http://facebook.com/gentlemanwithin I N S T A G R A M: http://instagram.com/thegentwithin S O U N D C L O U D: http://gentlemanwithin.com/soundcloud P I N T E R E S T: http://pinterest.com/gentlemanwithin G O O G L E +: http://plus.google.com/+Gentlemanwithin S N A P C H A T: khoiii - - - - - - - - - - - - ✖Exclusive Stuff ➢Check out the ‘I Am A Gentleman’ Manifesto → http://bit.ly/2vQewP5 ➢A Crash Course to Better Style → http://bit.ly/2nFUSS1 ➢Join the Gentlemen Within Private Facebook Community → http://bit.ly/2wYuH1n #GentlemanWithin #ShoeEssentials #ShoesForMen #MensShoes

Good video thanks! But I dont get the loafers thing. they look bad.
Gentleman Within (8 days ago)
Thanks, to each his own. Style and fashion is subjective just like art or anything in matters of taste.
Jason Ong (19 days ago)
How would you classify oxblood color? Can it be pulled off for formal or is it too casual?
Gentleman Within (16 days ago)
never tried bombas. But merino wool is the fabric and so all types of brands have merino wool socks, even the ones I mentioned earlier. as for bamboo recos, I don't have any at the moment.
Jason Ong (17 days ago)
+Gentleman Within Okay, I seem to lean more to chukkas, chelseas. I rarely am in a super formal situation so dress boots can be a go to shoe too, just rarely though.
Jason Ong (17 days ago)
+Gentleman Within what brand is using merino wool? I haven't seen any bamboo nor modal socks yet, got any brand recommendations? What are your thoughts on Bombas socks?
Gentleman Within (17 days ago)
chukkas, work boots, dress boots, chelseas, moc toe..all depends on your personal preference really.
Gentleman Within (17 days ago)
merino wool is just the type of fabric. Almi i don't think has released their socks yet, but will be having a kickstarter soon i believe. and merino wool believe it or not is good for summer time, it has cooling properties. bamboo is also a good option for warmer climates
Ethan Baker (1 month ago)
one correction: you swapped "semi" and "quarter" brogue terms...
Gentleman Within (1 month ago)
Yup! So many brogue types, easy to mix em up haha.

I recently decided to build a shoe and boot collection for the type of wear pattern I have but also to cater for the type of weather we get here seasonally in NYC. First, boots are my go to all purpose foul weather shoe. In particular rubber soled Chukka's. Rubber soles because they are simply more comfortable for high frequency wear cycles, also the rubber sole is better for water repelling than leather soles ...especially during the NYC rain and snow during the late Fall and Winter months, Chukka's because they have a style that can be dressed up or down. I bought 2 pair of brown Chukka's from Nordstrom Rack about 3 months ago. Andrew Marc, they are not real leather but the material for the upper is very sturdy, the soles are rubber but the heel has air cavities. I am looking to get the heels replaced with solid rubber ones to dramatically extend the life of the boot for not too much. I bought 2 to allow cycling but today decided to buy a third pair to reduce cycle time per boot. Next are my dress shoes. I had a couple of beater shoes that I bought cheap and needed to build a fresh shoe wardrobe so I did some research and decided on AceMarks. In one shot I bought the following: 1) Oxford toe cap Black 10.5 2) Oxford toe cap Cienna 10.5 3) Chukka's Oxblood 11 4) Chukka's Black 11 5) Double Monkstrap Oxblood 10.5 6) Bluchers Plain toe Black 10.5 7) Bluchers Plain toe Oxblood 10.5 Note I bought two Chukka's despite having already having the two rubber sole pair...these AceMarks would be the rarely worn dress up Chukka's for fair weather excursions. No snow or rain is intended to touch these babies! So far...having the set for a few weeks I've only worn two out of the house...though my fit was measured perfectly using their tool the shoes are snug across the arch and still need some flexing (I maybe should have gotten an E width for my size). The first wear of the Oxblood Chukka's and the Monkstraps was pretty painful..the monkstrap strap hugs too closely to the top of the arch and I'll have to flex the leather their away from my foot or apply padding to break that part in to prevent chafing...but I am pretty sure once worn a few more times they'll all be super comfortable. That said, if I do get another set (plan was to get another Blutcher (Brown) , another monkstrap (Brown), a Derby (Ciena), 2 Chelsea boots (Black/Oxblood) I'll be sure to buy them all in 11 instead of the 10.5 which will mean less break in time from first wear.

David, Thanks for sharing this. I agree with pretty much everything you said. Quite an Ace Marks collection. I've heard to much about them over the years (mostly good), but have yet to try them out yet. Cheers to building up a solid shoe rotation!
Me Too (6 months ago)
Hey once again, I keep forgetting to ask you what is the name of the blue suede chukkas you have here in this video? I’ve seen similar but I would like to know the name of these particular ones. I like them. Thank you and please keep doing your vids.
Gentleman Within (6 months ago)
They're from a brand called Ikon London. Picked 'em up a few years ago on ASOS...Unfortunately they've sold out for a while...http://us.asos.com/ikon/ikon-london-elm-leather-lace-up-military-boots/prd/5909776
Me Too (6 months ago)
Hey Khoi, what are those boots at around the 9:18 mark that are laid out along with the dark jeans and vest? I know you provided links for some items but I would like to know details on these in particular? What is the brand name and color please? Thank you.
Me Too (6 months ago)
Gentleman Within Ok yes I of course, I see this now. Thank you again.
Gentleman Within (6 months ago)
Me Too thanks man. You can shop all of the shoes featured in the video in the pinned comment in the comments section. The pair you're talking about is an older model from several years ago, however I do have a similar pair in that comment you can check out. Cheers!
USPATRIOT99 (6 months ago)
Hahahahaha my first pair for Prom was a square toe!
Gentleman Within (6 months ago)
come to think of it, i also wore a black shiny square toe to prom LOL
Gentleman Within (6 months ago)
hahaa, and I'm sure that you felt baller ASF rocking those square toed shoes 😂
USPATRIOT99 (6 months ago)
Everyone's first shoe in my opinion should be the Allen Edmonds Fifth Avenue (which that shoe is). In that dark brown you can wear it with anything and people will be impressed because its timeless and looks amazing. It could really be your only shoe if you are not into style.
Gentleman Within (6 months ago)
I agree, a pair like the Fifth Avenue or even Park Avenue which is the cap toe I believe without any broguing would make for an excellent first quality shoe. Timeless, indeed. And is sure to get the compliments.
Me Too (6 months ago)
Where are your links to these items? I like the Nike casual wear. Where can I get that pair?
Gentleman Within (6 months ago)
Me Too it should be the top comment when you expand all of the comments for this video. If you don't see it maybe YouTube has it hidden somehow? I'll have to look into it...
Gentleman Within (6 months ago)
Me Too awesome! Glad to have you onboard. Hope I can continue to bring you value moving forward
Me Too (6 months ago)
Gentleman Within excuse me but I either I don’t see a pinned comment or I don’t know what a pinned comment is. Having trouble here, I’m slow sorry. Help.
Me Too (6 months ago)
Gentleman Within thank you. Great video. I’ll be subscribing..
Gentleman Within (6 months ago)
Me Too check the pinned comment. As for that particular colorway, it's sold out, however you can find it in all black in the links I provided.
Javier Fernandez (7 months ago)
Hi,i can't find a shoe dress collection,or shoe casual, dressy or rugged Oxford or derbies shoes ,maybe You help me? If You know a link or youtuber collector i appreciate that, thanks for your time.
Gentleman Within (7 months ago)
hey Javier, thanks for the message. are you asking where to get started with building out your shoe collection? I don't know any shoe collectors on YT, but I'd say that a pair of suede derbies is a great casual shoe, as well as a penny loafer for summer. brown cap toe or plain toe oxfords is also a good starting point. then a brogue (quarter or half) whichever you're more comfortable with...i'd hold off on monkstraps until you have the ones I mentioned first.

Jason Hubbard (7 months ago)
Great information. I've always thought that shoes could make or break a look. Maybe do a video on how to take care of your shoes. Some shoes can be an investment and you need to take care of them but I see many guys with great shoes that are unpolished, scuffed or just dirty. I notice you also use shoe trees to keep the shape. I don't think there are a lot of guys that know the value of shoe trees. Your presentations are always informative and well done. Thanks.
Gentleman Within (7 months ago)
Thanks for the kind comment Jason. You're right about that. Come to think of it, I haven't given quite a few of my shoes a polish in a while. And great idea for a video, I'll have to add it to the list.
john c (7 months ago)
more people can pull off loafers with a suit than white sneakers with one. I loved the video tho! keep it up
Gentleman Within (7 months ago)
Thanks John. Depends on the person, but yes...these are all versatile shoes! Got another video dropping soon. Stay tuned!
