Cheers, the video was helpful! Much appreciated.
Is there a solution for 2019 on how to get subcategories to display under categories, This did not work for Woocommerce Storefront Theme and I'm using the latest updated version of Wordpress, I've been trying to make this work all day but just can't.  When I click on the main Catagory the products keep displaying instead of the subcategory and them products.
hello, i have an issue. i have recently added a new parent category which i want to put other categories i already have under. however the new category i have made will not show up on my shop what so ever. The categories i have now made subcategories to the new parent now dont show up either and instead on my shop it only displays products eventhough my woocommerce settings is set to show categories. where have i gone wrong... is there a better way to add a new parent category to already existing categories? thank you , your help is much appreciated.

In an update to my word press website, the menu on the right side for external links from Amazon previously showed an option to choose a category for each product added to the website Shop. That option is no longer available on the Product-Edit-Add product section. How do I add the category (i.e. Electronics, Housewares) to the Product?

Thank you for this video, I have found it extremely helpful. I am trying to create a menu that works in the following way: For example: Main menu to show - Kitchen / Dinning / Bathroom. When once selects any option from the main menu like Kitchen - a page must open showing sub categories with an image and description like (Mugs/Pots/Pans). Want to be able to open any product to see the full list of items under this category - If selected Mugs a page will all mugs must show with a short description. The one can select the most liked mug to be take to the product page where it can be added to cart. Do you have any info on how to add this to my menu. I do not want drop down sub category under the kitchen tap on the main menu - all these opinions must be inside the kitchen page. Appreciate some direction if you can assist.

Hi Sven really liked your video! Is there a way to remove the count from the categories or change its color?
AD Graphics/Designs (10 months ago)
So once your categories and sub categories are created, how do you put each product where its supposed to go? Is this done while your creating each product individually?

Kim Gaskins (1 year ago)
Hi. Thanks for sharing!  Is it possible to control the arrangement of products on the shop page, i.e. pants together, dresses together, etc.?
Sven WooCommerce (1 year ago)
Hey Kim, If I am understanding you correct then this Official WooCommerce plugin : https://goo.gl/CSaKx7 will do this perfectly for you! You'd need custom coding additions to do this yourself, so from a time v money perspective I'd go with that plugin. Hope that helps
ButtlerBen (1 year ago)
Hallo Sven, thank you for your answer. Yes, I need something for my progress, but can you give me a plugin that I can get free ?
ButtlerBen (1 year ago)
Hello Sven, i whatch your video and i have a question. At the moment i am working on my shop. Now i intend a sidebar and i want to do it like "Net-A-Porter". I just can not get it, can you help me in this situation. Show me how that work. Please.
Sven WooCommerce (1 year ago)
Hey, this extension will do exactly that for you : https://goo.gl/Zanj4b it filters instantly with the different Category/Attribute options in the sidebar just like "Net-A-Porter" website. Hope that helps!
Kimberly Robertson (1 year ago)
I do not have display option to do this. What can i do?
Sven WooCommerce (1 year ago)
When you go to Appearance --> Customize --> WooCommerce you should see this https://screencast.com/t/jelh2Q31 . If not please make sure that everything is up to date on your site, that you are running the latest versions.... Then check by disabling any 3 party themes/plugins just to check.... as it may very well be a conflict that is causing those options not to show as they are set to show by default.
Sven WooCommerce (1 year ago)
Yes I believe so.... I'm not at my computer at the moment. I'll take a look tomorrow to make sure nothing else has changed!
Kimberly Robertson (1 year ago)
Besides that. Everything else is the same steps? Thank you gor prompt response.

Mine's not working. I've got my products set in both the main category and sub category but still doesn't work. Would you know why?
Sooz3112 (1 year ago)
Thank you soooooo much. I have been struggling with understanding how to display my products in categories, rather than showing as a cluster of individual products on my 'shop' page. You've helped so much. Could I ask, which is the best way to view the changes on my Wordpress website, is it through accessing 'View Store' or 'View Site'....I have Divi installed and I see different displays when accessing either the store or the site...I don't know which is the final version that my customers will see...when it goes live. Many thanks.x

How do you separate products on the shop page? I want to show for example 6 products from each category and if the customer want to see more they can click on the category name or view more button on the bottom????

Hey Sven, thank you for this video. It was great. I have one issue though, my category names appear right on top in the middle of my category thumbnail images. Do you know how to move the category names below the thumbnail image? I've searched everywhere for an answer and can't find the solution. Thanks.
James Allen (1 year ago)
Awesome, but my options are only: General | Inventory | Downloadable products ... no "Display" option. :(
Azizul Hoq (7 months ago)
@Sven WooCommerce Awesome. Your tutorial solved my problem. Thanks
Sven WooCommerce (1 year ago)
I'd contact the theme author of Salient. They say they have support for WooCommerce so they should be able to advise how their theme is controlling this causing it not to display correctly. (assuming no 3rd party plugin is conflicting as well)
James Allen (1 year ago)
Thanks. I am using Salient theme. It seems that option is on Storefront theme only. I'm simply trying to spread out the products on my "product-category" pages... for some reason the products under the categories are only appearing as if in a left side column. Any ideas?

rickhorvath (1 year ago)
I'm still deciding between Woocommerce and Prestashop. I had set up another site in Presta, but it took months to get everything correct. I do need to import categories and products, so this will be the deciding factor. How easy is it to IMPORT categories into Woo without having to do anything else - and get the navigation correct?
Sven WooCommerce (1 year ago)
Yes it is pretty easy! My advice is to simply create one WooCommerce product and assign it a category then export that product. You can then use that as the template for your import of all your products using the Import/export feature that is built into WooCommerce! The menu/navigation is simply setting up the Menus in the WordPress Menus section and that is really easy. Hope that helps.
Thank you, but why I ca NOT see "display" button ? do I have to change my theme? note: my theme is Shop Isle
Man .. you are awesome !!! you deserve one million now!

Thank you poour this video but it does not work with divi
FARMEN MEN (1 year ago)
Thank you very much, I'm waiting to read you hoping for a tip.
Sven WooCommerce (1 year ago)
Yes unfortunately there seems to be an issue with Divi. I expect it has it's own set of rules which are overriding the core default functions of WooCommerce with the categories display. There are some other people that have commented about this. I'd look to contact the Divi author for a fix here.

Fun Stuff (1 year ago)
Thanks for the tip! I prefer to have a left menu bar with categories within shop so the users can move them easier. Woocommerce product categories are lacking, and I have to improvise by creating widget left navigation within the store instead of breadcrumb trails to "go back" out unless someone has a better idea.
Fun Stuff (1 year ago)
Thank you very much! I discovered that you can get a plug-in called Woocommerce Product Categories, and it's free.
Sven WooCommerce (1 year ago)
You can either use a custom menu and put that in as a widget in the sidebar or..... use ..... https://www.woothemes.com/products/ajax-layered-navigation/ this will give the best experience as the user can nicely filter down on the areas that they want.

Thank you for this simple to understand tutorial! Would appreciate your help with my WooCommerce store...the "Shop by Category" on my site "disappeared" and even after following your tutorial it is not back - I think I may have erased something - maybe a page or something, can you assist me? Thanks in advance - Orion
OZ H2O (1 year ago)
Hi, thank you for the informative tutorial, it was very helpful. I need some help with something that might seem like an extremely silly question, however, I am new to WordPress and have never built a website before. I have been inspired to build my own website. However, I am now stuck after uploading my products to WordPress. I have purchased a premium theme and have created menus for 6 pages already. I am now stuck as to how to add my products that are on WordPress to the desired pages I created. I have spent hours searching for some help and still have no direction. Please can provide a tutorial on this. Thank you,
OZ H2O (1 year ago)
Thank you for getting back to me. As of yesterday, not sure why the shop page is not showing any products.
Sven WooCommerce (1 year ago)
All your products will be shown on the shop page. So add that page to your Menu. You add categories to your products, You can then add these product categories to your menus. like here : https://screencast.com/t/9GWm7Zae so you simply add a product category to the menu and it will pull in all the products under that category. Hope that helps.

Hello, thank you for this video. Could you possible show a small video as to how to put a "shop" menu in worpress using woo commerce. That would be really helpful.
Gayathri Srivatsan (1 year ago)
Sven WooCommerce thank you for the prompt reply. Currently I am aiming this “shop” menu for Amazon affiliate products.
Sven WooCommerce (1 year ago)
Sure... that's a great idea. I'll see if I can get one done this weekend for you :)

Hi thanks for the video - very helpful. I have an aside question: how have you formatted the product category and title in that offset red box? And the image with white border? A plugin? Or all by css? Many thanks
Nick Griffiths (1 year ago)
Ah! A WC theme. Sadly I don't have and the WC defaults are a little unimaginative. Appreciate quick reply. Cheers

Eduardo Lozada (1 year ago)
Hi Sven. Not working for me. I configured the display settings as explained and it shows products. I am using Divi and the Shop (WooCommerce) Module.
Eduardo Lozada (1 year ago)
Thanks Sven. I created a text module and pasted[product_categories number="12] to be able to keep using the Divi Theme.
Sven WooCommerce (1 year ago)
I mean switch to this one https://www.woocommerce.com/storefront/ the default WooCommerce theme. (you will find it under Themes > Add New and then Search in your WordPress Admin area https://wordpress.org/themes/storefront/ )
Sven WooCommerce (1 year ago)
I have noticed that some people have had an issue with the Dvi theme and shop categories. I don't have the theme myself. Maybe their support forums have a solution. I would switch to Storefront theme for a minute (you can search for it in the Theme area of your site) and check to see that it is working, you can then simply switch back. This means you will have configured it correctly and that there is something in the Divi theme overriding the settings. There is also another user in this comment section that had a problem with Divi, they may now have a solution as well. Hope that Helps

Patricia Davidson (2 years ago)
Thanks for the great informational video! This helped me out while setting up my shop ;)
Sven WooCommerce (2 years ago)
Glad I could help Patricia! Good luck with the shop!
I'm a complete novice. How do you get the category name to display across the image in a red box? It looks great
Sven WooCommerce (2 years ago)
This might help you get started by adding this plugin : https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-custom-css/ And then adding this custom CSS : https://pastebin.com/wedTXSJi . You would want to learn about CSS and then you can adjust that code if needed. Please note you will also need to learn about media queries and add a slightly modified version of that code for mobile sized display as well i.e less than 576px because the layout changes.
Thanks Sven. I will puzzle it out but it will no doubt take me months haha
Sven WooCommerce (2 years ago)
It is part of the themes styling. The theme is https://www.woocommerce.com/products/proshop/ . You'd need to know php/css code to change this if you are using a different theme that displays it differently. Hope that helps.
Leakim (2 years ago)
Seems simple enough... but I'm also experiencing problems with the Divi builder! Maybe a basic question to start with: when you have products sorted in subcategories, is it necessary to have BOTH the category and subcategory boxes ticked? Or only the subcategories if you first want categories only to show on the shop page. Also: is it necessary to use an extra catalogue plugin if you want to make use of WooCommerce for a catalogue only?
Christina Marie (1 year ago)
how did you make it work?? where do you add the shortcode
Christina Marie (1 year ago)
I'm having the same problem here.. how and where do you enter the text code: [product_categories number="12] ... i don't understand what you mean by this. please help! i've searched everywhere to figure this out
Leakim (2 years ago)
Many thanks...it works!!! (with shortcode ;-)
Sven WooCommerce (2 years ago)
The settings for this are under WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Display > Shop & product pages and then you enter how the Shop and Category pages should function. If this isn't working with your 3rd party theme you'd need to contact your theme provider in this regard. As a site note you can add any product category/subcategory to the Menu/Navigation (just make sure that the "product categories" are available for selection under the Screen Option (top right corner of the page) when on the menu page. Product category Shortcodes use this format [product_category category="tshirts"]
Leakim (2 years ago)
Thanks for the prompt answer! Seems it doesn't work with Divi though... or I haven't found the right shortcode to insert in a text module? I've only managed to show the categories with [product_categories number="12" parent="0"] , but that didn't take me any further. Should I be adding to that code?
Ana v (2 years ago)

Matt Mayes (2 years ago)
how to duplicate a shop page so I can have men and womens in on my menu
Matt Mayes (2 years ago)
Thank you
Sven WooCommerce (2 years ago)
You would simply add the category "Mens" to any mens products and category "Womens" to any womens products. You then add those two product categories to your Menu. Once you have done this when a customer clicks on "Mens" all the mens products will show and then the same happens for the "Womens" as well.

Patrick Anderson (2 years ago)
Can this be done with multiple subcategories? Category -sub CA --sub sub CB ---sub sub sub CC ----Products
Sven WooCommerce (2 years ago)
Yeh you can definitely do this.... I knew you could, but just double checked on my test site that it did what you wanted.
Patrick Anderson (2 years ago)
Exactly what im looking for! Limitations in adobe Muse/musegain prevents this so i had to come up with my own solution for this. But new update if im correct allows for this! Thanks so much! So little information out there on this exactly!
Sven WooCommerce (2 years ago)
Sure you can do this with multiple subcategories!..... i.e Cars > Makes of Car > Types of car > Year of Car > The Car. Clicking on each on takes you down a level until eventually you get to the product depending on how many levels down you set. :)
nuwamanya michael (2 years ago)
my product categories are not displaying in the drop down menu, what is the problem
Sven WooCommerce (2 years ago)
In the navigation area? This will be because you haven't added them to the menu. Make sure the Product Categories are available to be added to the menu in the "screen options" top right on the Menus page in the WP-Admin area. Once the menus are set up correctly and saved you will see the categories.

It's not working for me for some reason?
Big (2 years ago)
Sven WooCommerce I found out lol I didn't have it published
Sven WooCommerce (2 years ago)
It's likely to be a setting or not having saved something. Do the products show but just not the categories? If you are using a 3rd party theme it maybe worth switching to the default WordPress theme to see if it's the theme causing the issue. I doubt it would be for this particular thing but you never know.
Ayah Hamam (2 years ago)
Oh thanks so much!! But do you know How to ad A product display (like populair products) on A home page??
