For everyone that has been asking where to buy good futons outside of Japan, I found a place that sells authentic hand-made Japanese futons abroad. These are actually 100% cotton so they are the real deal: https://goo.gl/iOhUf4

Zo Arai (1 year ago)
I like your space, really. But it's not for me. I need some stuff around me to see so I can use it right away when I need it. Decluttering and minimalism has helped me keeping the important things only. I'm glad you found your own version. I'm still on my journey.

I love your place! Everytime I watch these apartment tours overseas everything is so cluttered and unorganized and I always think to myself "Why can't they just put everything away where it belongs?!" Or "Do they really need all that crap?" You have everything exactly right! Everything you need put away exactly where it belongs and nothing more.. I love it!! 😀

Whaaaa! 300sq ft?! 😭 I was living in a studio about 400sq ft in chicago and it was so small for me and for my two small dogs. I so hated it and wanted to move out of there badly so subleased it. Guess small homes are not for me.. but you sound like you really enjoying staying these japanese tiny apartments. I dont know about how id feel living in one of those in japan. Anyhow looks simple and clean!

Showering while sitting down isn't an "Asian thing", it's just being practical.
TaraWhiteTalks (1 year ago)
It is more common in Asia though, no?
happymommy81 (1 year ago)
I love the look of minimalism, but I worry if I did the same that I,would feel bored or lonely.
TaraWhiteTalks (1 year ago)
I can only speak for myself but I have found my life to be much more interesting with all the new experiences and extra time for friends/relationships. Good luck!

iT NEEDS LIFE! Try color, and more expensive furniture (plastic is NOT environmentally friendly) when you have time and money. I also lived in Japan, so know it is extremely expensive.
Alexander Malki (1 year ago)
May I ask in which city you are living in? It's mainly because since depending on the location it can give a better perspective on what seems to be reasonably adequate space for an appartement.
TaraWhiteTalks (1 year ago)
We are outside of Tokyo =)
Alexander Malki (1 year ago)
TaraWhiteTalks I seem to have put my question wrong. I was only curious to wonder the location of the place since it can vary depending on price, size and location. For example an appartement of the same size in Tokyo would have a price difference in let's say Osaka in comparison.
TaraWhiteTalks (1 year ago)
From my perspective, we can decide what is a reasonably adequate space for ourselves based on what we want or need. I've seen apartments double the size of this one for the same price.

TaraWhiteTalks (1 year ago)
True. Different things spark joy for different people I guess. I have been downsizing my shoes lately though because after a year or so, I realized some of those pairs rarely got worn ;)

Hi Tara, I love your videos! I saw that you have a shoe spray and I use all your recipes from your cleaning products video and I'm wondering if you mention anywhere how you make your shoe spray? I really want to find a good natural recipe to keep my shoes nice! Thank you so much for your help!
TaraWhiteTalks (1 year ago)
Hi Nicole, it is straight vodka in a spray bottle with 10-20 drops of tea tree oil. Tea tree is optional =)

TaraWhiteTalks (1 year ago)

Candace Murray (1 year ago)
Hi Tara, it's been a year since my last comment, I often reference your videos for inspiration & motivation. My question to you is, did it take awhile to adjust sleeping on the futon? I am moving soon and am considering purchasing one. I reviewed the comments but did not come across one that spoke about comfort or perhaps the benefit. Thank you for your videos, they provide great information and inspiration.
TaraWhiteTalks (1 year ago)
Hi Candace! I am planning to make a video on sleeping on the floor / futons eventually. It didn't take me any time to adjust to sleeping on a futon because I had been sleeping on the regular floor for around 5 months before I got a futon. That probably sounds weird, however our bed in Australia caused so much back pain that I had no choice. Depending on the quality of the futon, some are more comfortable than others. I recommend 100% cotton. If for whatever reason you want to ease your way into it, you can always add some sort of egg crate or memory foam layer underneath. Or you can just lay a folded blanket under the area that is hurting, such as a shoulder or waist. I'm just thinking from my experience of sleeping on the floor. Benefits are that normal mattresses can impede circulation or make it difficult for our body to realign during sleep if they are too soft and don't offer any resistance. No resistance can cause unsupported joints to sag. If you aren't sure if you want to commit to sleeping on a futon, I would recommend trying to sleep on the floor for a few nights. The floor is much harder than a futon. If you are able to add enough soft layers with blankets or duvets, you may be able to get an idea what it feels like. If you can sleep on the floor, a futon should be no problem. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask!

Margarita Kulyapina (1 year ago)
You have a lot of Muji items. I live the brand myself, so I applaud your choice!
Margarita Kulyapina (1 year ago)
Very true, I actually am very sensitive to bright colors, so their relaxing color scheme is simply amazing to me. I use their clothes and certain skincare products, stationery, and travel items; all have made me happy so far and I have not had problems with any. I am especially impressed by the stationery. Additionally, they are one of the more environmentally-friendly brands I've found so far.
TaraWhiteTalks (1 year ago)
It sounds odd, but I love just being in the MUJI store. Other stores are sensory overload but I feel calm in a MUJI =)

Why is everything in Japanese homes made of that gross cream coloured plastic? I have seen several japanese home tours and they all have this.

I'm not sure. It yellows with age as well. My current shower room is worse than this one =)

TaraWhiteTalks and let me tell ya, I had a spending problem. This lifestyle fixed it!
TaraWhiteTalks (2 years ago)
Awesome! It is defo freeing to let go of that mentality that you need to keep buying more and more.

I'm jealous, I want to be a minimalist but I can't let go of my vintage tots and dolls 😭😭.
TaraWhiteTalks (2 years ago)
Minimalists can have collections too. Sometimes minimalism is about having MORE of what you love. The only thing you need to get rid of is the stuff that you doesn't serve you in anyway.

Yoha Asakura (2 years ago)
yeah it is a first time for me to see the sink not separate with the toilet especially in japan :)

Earth paste! Wooohoo! Have you tried Uncle Harry's? It's from the NW of the States, but it's my absolute favorite. It's got clay and sea salt and essential oils. Also -- I love how your apt is nice and long. We live (my partner and I) in 26 sq. meters in Paris, so it was inspiring to see how you organized things -- ours is a work in progress. :)
Veggie Magnifique (2 years ago)
Haha! House exchange! You're on. :) Btw: http://www.uncleharrys.com/store/mouth-care/toothpaste/peppermint-toothpaste-3-oz-glass-jar It's a small company, but so worth it.
TaraWhiteTalks (2 years ago)
I wish my apartment was in Paris! We should trade ;) Haven't tried Uncle Harry's yet. I'll have to see if it is on iherb. Thanks for the tip.
