I discovered this album 30 years ago and it just gets better and better. A true must have.

Is this one of his earlier songs? I’ve never heard him sing without his signature car-motor-without-a-muffler voice.

I bet if you could breathe there, being drunk on the moon would feel pretty fucking marvelous.

Tight-slacked clad girls on the graveyard shift Neath the cement stroll Catch the midnight drift Cigar chewing Charlie In the newspaperness Grifting hot-horse tips On who's running the best And I'm blinded by the neon Don't try and change my tune Cause I thought I heard a saxophone I'm drunk on the moon And the moon's a silver slipper It's pouring champagne stars Broadway's like a serpent Pulling shiny top-down cars Laramer is teeming With that undulating beat And some Bonneville is screaming It's way wilder down the street And I'm blinded by the neon Don't try and change my tune Cause I thought I heard a saxophone I'm drunk on the moon Hearts flutter and race The moon's on the wane Tarts mutter their dream hopes The night will ordain Come schemers and dancers Cherry delight As a Cleveland-bound Greyhound And it cuts through the night And I've hawked all my yesterdays Don't try and change my tune 'Cause I thought I heard a saxophone I'm drunk on the moon

I thought this song would be perfect for a full October moon. Brings back a lot of memories from the first time I heard it in the 70's. Happy times...good memories. ...come schemers and dancers ...let's go get drunk on the moon.

I don't know how to love this more. It makes me feel pathetic wanting this to relate to my midwestern life more than it does. I have seen the other side and I want to be part of it.

Do you think he’s referring to being on psychedelics? “I’m blinded by the neon” pretty self explanatory, “don’t try and change my tune” so he’s consciousness is altered and he wants to stay in that state, “I thought I heard a saxophone” hallucinations, “I’m drunk on the moon” so in other words he’s not sober and feels like he’s in space. I dunno I might be completely wrong but thought it makes sense. Some of the imagery like describing the road as a “serpent” is akin to a lot of people’s descriptions of psychedelics.

Fuckin' finally. Thought I'd never find a song to help me get to the bottom of a bottle of seagrams after a long day of hating myself. Thanks, Tom :D

Now, I hate to be a nerd, and I absolutely love Tom's music but... Realistically, you get more drunk with less the higher up in the atmosphere you are. That's why you can get absolutely hammered on a plane ride and why alcohol isn't allowed on the ISS. If he were drinking on the moon, he's either not having much, or the song should be re-named "Liver failure on the moon".

So I’m not a classical nut and I’m learning still but if this is stand up bass how is the fretless hitting the note so perfect with the piano? I always wondered. Sorry if I sound dumb I’m just the electronic sound designer I never got deep into this jazz technicality stuff. Even though I play jazz drums I never paid any attention to the bassist following others I only followed the bassist...I’m dumb

Listen to this drunk dude. It’s magical. I never felt so in tune to a melody and it made me feel like I lived in an apartment in 70s New York high up looking up at the sky and it was like a cartoon. Seriously magical.

There is no mood this man cannot set with a song. Such a magical gift, to be able to take you anywhere in the world, and put you in some smoky bar, or on a warship, or in a graveyard,or a Cuban jail without having ever met you. It is beyond music, its fucking magic.

Tom actually had a nice sounding blues voice before he started practicing his basslike vocals.
