What is PRODUCT LINE? What does PRODUCT LINE mean? In marketing jargon, product lining is offering several related products for sale individually. Unlike product bundling, where several products are combined into one group, which is then offered for sale as a unit, product lining involves offering the products for sale separately. A line can comprise related products of various sizes, types, colors, qualities, or prices. Line depth refers to the number of subcategories a category has. Line consistency refers to how closely related the products that make up the line are. Line vulnerability refers to the percentage of sales or profits that are derived from only a few products in the line. Product lining is a marketing strategy that companies adopt which they offer products in the same product line for sale individually (Krishnamurthi, 2007). Product line is a group of related products defined by their functions and customer market, forming a “line" or category (Neubauer, Steffen & Margaria, 2003). For instance, the variety of coffees that are offered at a café is one of its product lines and it could consist of flat white, cappuccinos, short black, lattes, mochas and etc. Alternatively, Product line of juices and pastries can also be found at a café. In comparison to product bundling, which is a strategy of offering more than one product for promotion as one combined item to create differentiation and greater value, product lining consists of selling different related products individually (Chen, 1997). The products in the product line can come in various sizes, colours, qualities, or prices. The benefits from having a successful product line is the brand identification from customers which result in customer loyalty and multiple purchases (Kekre & Srinivasan, 1990). It increases the likelihood of customers purchasing new products from the company that have just been added into the product line due to the previous satisfying purchases (Krishnamurthi, 2007).

Line Extensions occur when a company introduces additional items in the same product category under the same brand name such as new flavors, forms, colors, added ingredients, package sizes. This is as opposed to brand extension which is a new product in a totally different product category. Line extension occurs when the company lengthens its product line beyond its current range. The company can extend its product line down-market stretch, up-market stretch, or both ways. Product line extensions are a process where companies with an established brand alter the factors of a product or products to satisfy a refined segment in the market. There are two types of product line extensions, horizontal and vertical. Horizontal extensions consist of keeping the price and quality consistent, but changing factors like flavour or colour to differentiate the products. Vertical extensions consist of increasing and decreasing the quality and price to create inferior and luxury goods. These product line extensions are often closely related to existing products in a brands portfolio, but targets specific brand consumers through this approach. Product line extensions help companies identify and tend to the needs of refined target markets. This approach is a way to try and increase company sales, as well as expanding their brands product portfolio within the desired market. This expansion of a company’s product line also increases their competitive impact, and if applied appropriately, their advantage within the intended market. Practically, when brands apply a product extension strategy they can often benefit from the new addition or additions. This is as extending their product line enlarges their product portfolio and as a result provides the consumers with more variety to choose from. This is positive, as consumers tend to enjoy being able to have choice and through expanding a brands product line, the brand is providing this choice. Investing in this approach is commonly pursued by companies due to their desire to create revenue and to advance their competitive status against rival companies. The advantages when undergoing product line extensions is that the new product or products are commonly closely related to existing products, so the company often has the appropriate production process and capacity to produce the new product or products. Issues facing product line extensions can include company’s investments in the new products without the desired return. The product may come at a loss or may not be able to make enough of the return the company was forecasting for. The new addition could also send confusion to the company’s customer base, and in turn negatively affect the loyalty they have for the brand. This can evidently become a long-term risk in terms of brand image, as consumers may have a new view of the brand as cheap, in the case of downward extension, or unrealistic and unreasonable in terms of upward extension. An issue also connected to the extensions, could result in the production process becoming more and more complicated as a result of new products, this could affect the company’s efficiency and quality in the production of the brands product range. An advantage of extending company product lines is the likely rise in sales, demand and market share. Product line extension increases the amount of different products available to consumers, and through adding more products into the market it keeps consumers interested. This can be helpful in avoiding customer base loss.

Customers do not simply buy products because they satisfy their needs. Instead, they are interested in becoming clients of firms that offer them a complete product concept – an idea or a promise, if you will. The best products make people happier and create a positive expectation before being consumed.

Manufacturers have long employed analogous engineering techniques to create a product line of similar products using a common factory that assembles and configures parts designed to be reused across the product line. For example, automotive manufacturers can create unique variations of one car model using a single pool of carefully designed parts and a factory specifically designed to configure and assemble those parts. The characteristic that distinguishes software product lines from previous efforts is predictive versus opportunistic software reuse. Rather than put general software components into a library in the hope that opportunities for reuse will arise, software product lines only call for software artifacts to be created when reuse is predicted in one or more products in a well defined product line. Recent advances in the software product line field have demonstrated that narrow and strategic application of these concepts can yield order of magnitude improvements in software engineering capability. The result is often a discontinuous jump in competitive business advantage, similar to that seen when manufacturers adopt mass production and mass customization paradigms. While early software product line methods at the genesis of the field provided the best software engineering improvement metrics seen in four decades, the latest generation of software product line methods and tools are exhibiting even greater improvements. New generation methods are extending benefits beyond product creation into maintenance and evolution, lowering the overall complexity of product line development, increasing the scalability of product line portfolios, and enabling organizations to make the transition to software product line practice with orders of magnitude less time, cost and effort.

However, pricing decisions inconsistent with a firm’s competitive strategy can be dangerous, which is why companies should address the topic with much caution and attention. There are three important components we need to distinguish in this process. The amount a product costs to be produced, the price customers pay to buy the product, and the value they acquire from the product. If a company aims at cost leadership, then the focus will be costs (trying to keep them as low as possible). The company must offer a price slightly lower than the one offered by competitors. Conversely, if a firm’s strategy is differentiation, then the critical factor will be the value delivered to customers. Costs are not that important, as companies offering a differentiated product can charge more. So, pricing must be coherent with competitive strategy, although sometimes it is tempting to adjust prices to stimulate short-term gains of market share and increases of sales. Top-level managers have to stay focused on the big picture and make coherent decisions in line with the firm’s long-term strategy.

We'll start with the entry-level model, work out way up to the flagship model--the best TV Samsung makes--and along the way'll, you'll learn what kind of design and picture quality differences you can expect as you move up. Let's start up with what will be the same throughout every Samsung Smart TV you buy, and that's Tizen. Samsung continues to refine its Tizen smart TV operating system to the point where its TVs are more interactive and intuitive than ever before. Central to QLED smart improvements is a new Samsung One remote control, which the company says operates more devices, and supports more smart TV features via voice control. The TVs’ so-called Smart Hub can now be deeply customized using Samsung’s Smart View app, available for iOS and Android devices. Additionally, Samsung has come up with a new music service interface which corrals all supported internet radio stations and streaming music services into one place, with users’ playlists from all available services displayed in one central place. Samsung's most affordable 4K UHD TV, with HDR is the MU6300 and comes with 3 HDMI ports, along with one with HDMI-ARC for easy connection to a soundbar. For the price, this TV has good black levels, decent color, and better picture quality than you'd get with a 1080p TV for sure. If we move up a couple of notches, we get tot he MU7500, which is as a curved model, which isn't as common as you might think nowadays; Samsung is the last manufacturer to make curved TVs. At a glance, you'll notice the picture quality is a little better than the MU6300 and is brighter--which really makes HDR content pop of the screen better. Next on our list is the MU8000, where we're going to see a much flashier design in a trimmer bezel and slimmer profile. It's got a uniform backside and there's a chrome strip at the bottom that plays nicely against its two medal stands. With the MU8000, you'll also get a Samsung One Connect box, which lets you connect all your components to the box, then run a single cable up to your TV. The MU8000 punches well above its price point, where HDR starts to look pretty amazing at this level, with intense brightness, color, and very good looking black levels. If you're not looking to pay the premium price for Samsung's Q-Series, then this is an excellent choice. Finally on our list is one of those Q-Series TVs, the Q9, the crown jewel of of Samsung's new QLED TV lineup, and in our opinion, the best TV Samsung has ever made. It has a completely flat back, and a hidden mounting bay, which allows almost gapless wall mount when you use a special Samsung wall mount hardware. In terms of picture quality, we think the Samsung Q9 is one of the best screens you'll see all year from any manufacturer. This can be done through different colour combinations, product sizes and different product uses. This produces diversity for the firm as it is able to capture its sizable portion of the market. However, it can also be considered that marketing so many new products leads to economic resources being wasted; the consumer becomes confused and mistakes are made in the purchase of products. The very dynamism of product proliferation makes it hard to manage. Complexity is spawned by an ever-changing landscape of customer demand and companies' attempts to meet that demand with configurable products and more product variations. Product proliferation can sometimes also lead to cannibalisation of the existing product line of the company and should be justified by overall increase in market share.

We're going to start with the entry level, and as we move our way up, we're going discuss the different points of technology in each series' TV, how that affects picture quality and what it's like to use the TV. Let's dive right in: The S-Series is what TCL refers to as its Smart Value line. This series still features 4K resolution and HDR, though unlike the above models, only HDR10 is supported, with Dolby Vision support missing, likely due to the specialized hardware and licensing fees that come along with the technology. With the TCL S305 Series, screen size varies from 28"-45", with the 28" and 32" sizes at 720p and everything else from there is 1080p. With the TCL S405, you get a product that's a little more, but you get a whole lot back. You get 4k Ultra HD resolution, standard HDR support, more intense brightness than the S305 and really solid color, straight out of the box. Stepping up again though, takes you to an entirely different level with the TCL P-Series. The P-Series (TCL says to think performance) comprises the following models, armed with 72 zones of full array locally dimmed LED backlights for enhanced contrast and HDR brightness as well as an expanded color gamut that TCL says covers nearly the entire DCI-P3 color space. This is a landmark move for TCL, which has not embraced high-end full array local dimming technology until now. Despite this being the value line, many of the features of the above models are still included, like Creative Pro 4K upscaling. Three HDMI ports are included as well, though TCL hasn’t yet specified if all three support HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2, which are required for HDR.
