I was recently asked by a Tile Doctor colleague of mine to assist him with the restoration of an original Victorian tiled hallway at a property in the city. You will see from my website that I have a lot of experience in rebuilding Victorian tiled floors and on this occasion my colleague required me to perform some specialist tile repairs before he could carry out the business of cleaning and sealing the floor. The property owner had previously asked a different company in to carry out the floor restoration but the tile repairs made were disastrous. The repair attempts were never going to be successful as this was a particularly difficult situation and required real specialism in dealing with Victorian tiles. The previous company had used dry plaster to bed the tiles in the hope of being able to achieve some sort of flatness to dry cut the pieces in place. This had also been done without consideration for matching the colours of the tiles. You can see the result of this in the photo below. http://se-wales.tiledoctor.biz/ Full Restoration of a Victorian Tiled Hallway Floor in Cardiff Never give up is how I would describe this job!!! I initially surveyed the floor in this Cardiff kitchen in November 2014 and finally completed it and the end of February 2015 working on it off and on as I searched for right tiles to match the existing. On my survey the Victorian tiled floor which the customer was hoping to restore was covered over by ceramic tiles which the customer agreed to remove before my next visit so I could carry out a cleaning sample. Additionally there was an area of flooring which needed to blend in with kitchen as the pantry wall that previously separated it had been knocked down. The ceramic tiles were removed and I came round to carry out a cleaning sample in what I thought was one of the more heavily soiled areas; I used Tile Doctor Remove & Go combined with another Tile Doctor product called NanoTech HBU which stands for Heavy Build-up Remover. The results were successful and it was decided to go ahead with the restoration. During my visit I tested for moisture and in general the readings were good with the highest reading of 12 in different parts of the floor. Fully Restoring a Victorian Tiled Floor To restore the tiles I set about cleaning adhesive and grime off using a combination of Tile Doctor Nanotech HBU and Pro Clean which was left to dwell and soak in for two hours before scrubbing with a rotary machine fitted with a black scrubbing pad. I tried this for a while and found it was not removing the dirt as expected and on inspection I discovered that the inner body of the ceramic tile was still stuck to the floor. It seems the when the customer removed the ceramic tiles they had only managed to remove the top layer of the tile and had left the lower part stuck to the floor. This Job was now becoming a nightmare as the solution would be to chip and scrape away tiny pieces of the remaining tile away so I could reach and clean the original Victorian floor. I had suggested to the customer that it might be cheaper to replace the whole floor but he was adamant that we should continue with our original plan and try to do the best job possible so never giving up I was happy to oblige. In between cleaning the floor I prepared the base adjacent to the original floor with levelling compound. Also with the cleaning in progress I was getting a better look at the Victorian tiles which were now starting to appear and I could see how badly damaged which would have to be replaced. The hallway floor had to be cut at the kitchen doorway as it protruded into the kitchen which when the door was closed looked odd so the customer was happy with my suggestion. I made different suggestions for the new floor layout, and colours which we felt complimented each floor pattern , the new tiles were purchased from original style and the local reclamation yard but I did have to cut the back off a few because of different thickness. I finished fixing the replacement tiles and laying the new tiles in a pattern that we had agreed and in a style that best matched the original floor. Sealing a Victorian Floor Sealing After all the work undertaken including the tilling of the area attached to the original I gave the whole floor a final and thorough steam clean which I did on a the Friday leaving it to thoroughly dry out over the weekend so I could move onto sealing early the following week. Unfortunately when I arrived on Monday I discovered patches of efflorescence had appeared on certain tiles and I was still unable to finish the job. To resolve this the tiles needed to be given an wash down with Tile Doctor Grout Clean-up diluted 50/50 with water; this did the trick so I gave the floor another rinse with water and left to dry overnight. When I returned the next day I checked for moisture which was a borderline reading of 15-16 so using a heat gun applied some warmth to the whole floor making sure to let it cool down before sealing with a coat of Tile Doctor Colour Grow which is an impregnating sealer that occupies the pores in the tile to prevent dirt from becoming ingrained there. Next I applied three coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go which added a nice sheen to the floor and really brought out the vibrant reds in the tile. The following day I returned to do some tiling on wall above the cooker so applied a further three coats of Seal and Go to the floor to ensure it was fully sealed. If you have read this story through to the end you will appreciate that this was a mammoth job however it was satisfying to do and the final result looks fantastic, needless to say both myself and the customer were very happy with the end result.

Many Victorian tiles have survived, but their 100+ year life has taken its toll and many are in need of repair, with cracked or broken tiles. The tiles are not only visually pleasing, they're also easy to maintain: once the tiles have been grouted, sealed and then re-sealed, the floor or pathway only needs regular cleaning. Victorian Style Architecture Interior Design : Victorian Remodel in San Francisco The Pierce Street project is a 1906 Victorian Pacific Heights remodel by San Francisco-based Feldman Architecture. The owners of this Victorian home wanted to maintain its traditional feel while injecting a modern feel and making it as eco-friendly as possible. The result is a beautiful space with open kitchen, roof top garden and plenty of natural light throughout. Pierce Street Renovation by Feldman Architecture: “The Pierce Street Renovation involved updating and reconfiguring a 1906 stucco-clad Victorian. The owners wanted to maintain the building’s traditional feel, but also to infuse some modern elements, so the house would be both more livable and reflective of their personalities. They also hoped for a light-filled house that would incorporate sustainable elements. Furthermore, the original house took up nearly the entire length of its lot and the clients wanted a garden that would be accessible from the main living spaces. To achieve these goals, Feldman Architecture placed the living areas on the top floor, where the light would be best and where, by removing a large portion of the rear space, a roof garden was created. Most of the walls were removed from this floor to create spaces that are visually connected but functionally separate. The building is set off the south property line, which allowed the addition of numerous large windows along the length of the house. New skylights on the north side flood the interior of the top floor and the long hallway on the second floor with natural light. Open-riser stairs, a light well, and interior windows also allow light to filter down to the second floor hall.” Photos by: Paul Dyer http://www.dyerphoto.com/ Subscribe to our channel : http://www.youtube.com/homeinteriorplus

I have designed this small Victorian floor tiling project in a relaxed environment within few minutes, took the measurements from the software, printed the drawing and then carried out the work with ease. The software allowed me to know precisely where to start, what colour to start with for better aesthetics, showed me possible problems ahead and even showed me how many tiles of each type the project required. This software is a joy to use and I save loads of time in dry laying hundreds of tiny tiles. If you want to know more, visit: http://www.tile-master.co.uk

http://south-london.tiledoctor.biz/ Restoring a Victorian Tiled floor hidden under Carpet in Balham This post is from a house in Balham where the owner was doing some renovation work and after deciding to change the flooring in the hallway they discovered an original Victorian tiled floor. They planned to restore the floor unfortunately however their builders did not listen and didn't bother to put down any protection when decorating leaving it in a worse condition than when they found it. Cleaning the Victorian Tiled Floor To initially clean the floor I put down a 50/50 mixture of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean and Nanotech Ultraclean diluted with four parts water; this creates a powerful alkaline cleaner that is safe to use on tiles and contains tiny abrasive particles to cut through the grime. This solution was left to dwell on the tile for twenty minutes before being agitated using a rotary machine fitted with a black scrubbing pad. This action did well to deep clean the tiles and remove dirt but there was still plenty of other problems to deal with including paint from the decorating and glue from the carpet. To remove the glue and paint I treated the surface with Tile Doctor Remove and Go which as its name suggest is designed to remove coatings from the surface of tiles without damaging them. Working in sections the product was left to dwell for forty minutes on the surface of the tile before being worked in by hand into the glue and paint. Once it had all been removed I gave the whole floor a scrub with Grout Clean-Up to remove grout from the surface of the tile and this brightened up the colours. Last step was to give the floor a thorough rinse down using clean water, this is quite important and you need to ensure any trace of product has been removed before sealing. The water was removed using a wet vacuum which literally sucks the water off the floor and reduces drying times, the floor was still fairly damp at this stage so we called it a day leaving an air blower in place to help the floor to dry overnight. Sealing Victorian Tiles When I came back the next day I decided to seal the tiles using Tile Doctor Colour Grow which is an impregnating sealer that penetrates into the pores of the tile blocking any dirt from getting in and making the tiles easier to clean. Two coats were sufficient and Colour Grow also brings out the colour in the tile improving its look, certainly my customer thought so as all they could say was: "AMAZING I didn't think it was possible to get like this."

victorian tile restoration in Hove & Brighton in East Sussex. In this video you'll see a victorian tile floor restoration, cleaning and sealing - http://east-sussex.tiledoctor.biz/original-victorian-tiles-restored-to-top-condition-in-brighton/ You'll see how the transformation of the tiles took place in this victorian encaustic and geometric tile restoration video. If you're looking for the best services for East Sussex Tile Cleaning, then Tile Doctor is your best choice. The 19th century was a pivotal period for the Brighton and Hove area of East Sussex. Many of the major attractions were built during the Victorian era, including two of the major piers. Over time, Brighton became not just a very popular destination for day trippers, but also for home makers. Lots of Victorian-style houses were built, complete with Victorian-style tiled floors. If you're looking for Brighton tile cleaning, this is the best company to hire for floor restoration. Modern homeowners are increasingly uncovering these original Victorian tiles after decades of being hidden under carpet overlay. Contrary to popular belief, it is very much possible to restore these tiles back to peak condition despite suffering from damage, dirt and staining. Even if you're looking for Hove tile cleaning which is practically in the same area, it's perfect. I recently a house in Brighton to prove just that. The customer’s Victorian tiled hallway floor had been covered by many carpets over the past few decades and so there were many thick glue deposits, along with a heavy build-up of dirt and staining. Therefore, we knew that Victorian tile cleaning was necessary for maximum results. Cleaning an Original Victorian Tiled Hallway After protecting the woodwork with tape, I set about cleaning the Victorian tiles using a combination of products. One of these was Tile Doctor NanoTech HBU (HBU = Heavy Build-Up Remove), a powerful cleaner which uses nano-sized cleaning particles to penetrate deep into the tile to lift out and dissolve ingrained dirt and stains. I mixed the NanoTech HBU together 50:50 with Tile Doctor Pro-Clean, a reliable alkaline-based cleaner. This cleaning mixture was applied to the hallway floor and then covered with a plastic sheet for a few hours before being scrubbed into the tiles thoroughly with a lot of elbow grease and a specialised scrubbing pad. We thought that this Victorian tile restoration was pretty straight forward with all of our years of experience. A lot of the glue deposits were stubborn and would not respond to the chemical cleaning, so I needed to carefully scrape these off by hand. Once the majority of the glue had been removed I applied a set of diamond-encrusted burnishing pads to remove the top layer to resurface the floor and bring back a lot of the definition in the tile. This tile renovation removal job took faster than we thought, as usual. Sealing an Original Victorian Tiled Hallway After completing the cleaning process, I left the floor to dry completely. Giving the tiles enough time to dry is important, especially in older properties which won’t have a damp-proof membrane installed. Even a small amount of excess moisture can cloud the sealer and damage its performance. Once I was satisfied with the moisture level, I proceeded to seal the tiles using numerous coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go which is a water based sealer that doesn’t leave a smell as it dries and as well as adding a layer of protection to the tiles give an appealing low-sheen finish. The client, being of French nationality, said she was “sur la lune” (over the moon) with the result! Look at the photos below to see the transformation – I must say I was quite pleased myself! The Victorian tile restoration was a complete success!

Victorian tile restoration in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire: http://cambridge.tiledoctor.biz/renovating-an-original-edwardian-tiled-hallway-to-peak-condition-in-chippenham/ If you're looking for the best Victorian tile floor restoration service, watch the video where we restore an original Edwardian tiled floor that was hidded for many years under carpet. Located in Cambridge and part of the UK wide Tile Doctor Network Tom Conlon specialises in Victorian/Edwardian encaustic & geometric floor tile restoration but also covers natural stone, mosaic and glass tiles in the Victorian Style or Classic Victorian tiles. If you have luxury tiles or you're simply looking to polish up your Victorian/Edwardian hallway, then Tile Doctor who are experts in this field can help you. Don't leave it to yourself to learn the most efficient way to clean Victorian tile or carefully remove carpet, it can be a real headache. Instead, call us on 0345 512 0122 and we can help you easily and efficiently. ---- Renovating an Original Edwardian Tiled Hallway to Peak Condition in Chippenham and Cambridgeshire Edwardian-style tiled floors are very much of a likeness with Victorian-style tiled floors, both typically being made of encaustic cement and styled in painted in geometric patterns. The main difference, of course, is that Edwardian tiles are a main feature of Edwardian-era houses (1901-1910), while Victorian tiles are found in slightly older properties. As with many Victorian tiled floors, we’ve found that Edwardian tiled floors have commonly been hidden away for many years under carpet or some other form of covering. These hallway Edwardian tiles, at a property in Chippenham, had been covered by carpet for 30 years. Upon removing the carpet, we could see why – the hallway was covered in paint splashes, decades’ worth of dirt and, of course, adhesive stains from the underlay. My task was to do a Victorian tile restoration of the Victorian hallway floor back to its peak condition, when it was first installed over a century ago. Cleaning an Original Edwardian Tiled Hallway Floor in Cambridge The first step of the restoration was to ensure the walls surrounding the hallway were protected. I did this by applying a protective film around the edges of the room. Next, I removed all the old carpet grippers and adhesive deposits manually using a handheld scraper. The carpet removal process turned out to be very straight forward. Tile Doctor Remove and Go was then applied to the floor to strip away any old sealant, which certainly by now was no longer effectual. This product also helped to break down the paint stains on the surface of the floor, though I also used a handheld scraper, as well as a rotary machine fitted with a black scrubbing pad, to speed up the process of removing both the sealant and the paint. To complete the cleaning process, I applied Tile Doctor Acid Gel, which is a blend of phosphoric and hydrochloric acids in a gel form, formulated to remove grout haze (grout smears) and treat efflorescence which is the formation of white salts on the surface of the tile. Sealing an Original Edwardian Tiled Hallway Floor I left the Victorian floor restoration to dry completely overnight after installing air movers to assist with the process. These older properties do not typically have damp-proof membrane installed, which makes damp issues a real possibility. Upon returning to the property the following day, I ran some damp tests, and thankfully the tiles proved dry and ready to be resealed. To do this, I used one coat of Tile Doctor Ultra-Seal, which is a penetrating sealer designed for maximum stain protection. I then also added four coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go to provide the customer with the low-sheen, highly quality finish he desired. The Victorian floor tiles looked so much better after this. He was so impressed with the outcome of the Victorian tile restoration in cambridge that he left the following glowing review on the Tile Doctor feedback system: “Tile Doctor did an excellent job, starting from a very dirty and paint covered surface. The hallway floor now looks fantastic, just like it was a century ago. I’m pleased to recommend Cambridge Tile Doctor.” Like this video? Dripping with the colour and charm associated with the Victorian mosaic-style floor tiles synonymous with the likes of Thomas Minton, Chester offers a refreshing take on a classic design aesthetic in a durable, easy to install single tile format. Ideal for those looking to instil a period look in their home or who are partial to the increasingly popular ‘boho chic’ interior style, these gorgeous tiles are the perfect foil to exposed Victorian pipe and brickwork and anachronistic furniture and decor accents. See how Stéphane retained the period architecture but gave the rooms a distinctly continental vibe with contemporary DIY art, hits of colour and smoky, distressed wood flooring. Visit our website - http://devon-builders.com This is part 4 in the case study video series by the Devon Builders Brimblecombe Bros of the complete demolition and re-build of a beautiful Victorian Villa House in the Devonshire village of Lustleigh. The classic19th century house had been completely destroyed by fire. The damage to the building was so extensive, that a decision was made to knock down the house and start a complete re-build from the ground up. It was also decided to keep the house's original victorian styles, floor plan and features. This has been accomplished and although the house has been built using the very latest and greatest in modern construction techniques and building materials, it still retains it's 150 year old design and character. This is episode 4 in the on going video case study series. Featured in this episode are the steps to complete the interior of the house with Floor Insulation, Installation of the Underfloor Heating System, Floor Screed Covering, Plasterboard Fitting, Plastering a Skim Coat, Fitting the Coving, Hanging the Doors, Fine Finishing the Carpentry on the Victorian Staircase and finishing with the fitting of the Work Tops. Watch as Devon's oldest building firm completely restores this lovely old house to it's former glory. Thank you for watching the video. Built in 1880 this completely renovated one of kind row house in Parkdale mixes classic with modern. It's a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom home with garage for one car parking. Right from the original front door this amazing home makes a statement. The open concept flows throughout the main floor flooding it with light. An eye-opening entertaining space with soaring ceilings provides ample space for the living and dining rooms. The large eat-in modernly designed kitchen, complete with centre island, is bright and airy provided by the lovely french doors walk-out to the backyard. Thoughtfully designed, no detail was overlooked. The original charm still lingers including reclaimed original wood from the home for shelving in the dining room and kitchen. The second-floor features are stunning. The master bedroom boasts custom his and her closets and a 3-piece ensuite bathroom. A beautiful custom built sliding barn door separates the 2nd bedroom from the hallway. The full 4-piece bathroom is spacious with a freestanding cast iron tub and elegant vanity. Don't forget about the hydraulic trap door in the main floor powder room for access to extra storage space in the basement.
