J-Trip Plan - Then and Now by Nostalgic Train & An Early Bird Guide to Kyoto [1080p]

28:00
Slip back in time on a streetcar modeled on a steam engine and travel the tiny city of Matsuyama in Ehime Pref. Our reporter soaks in the hot springs of Dogo Onsen at a castle-like bathhouse and views hotel rooms that are themselves art installations. She also learns about Iyo-kasuri weaving and visits a bar to write some haiku. And, our correspondent suggests sightseeing spots, public baths, and eateries in Kyoto for early bird travelers to check out in the morning, before the crowds descend. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/jtripplan/20181008/2059043/

#066 Route 66 | English Lesson - How to plan a road trip ESL

#066 Route 66 | English Lesson - How to plan a road trip ESL READ the TEXT here: https://SpeakEnglishPod.com Hi everybody! I’m Georgiana, founder of SpeakEnglishPodcast.com. My mission is to help you speak English fluently. Speaking English is easier than it seems! You just have to use the right material and techniques. Today I'll talk again about Route 66. As the first episode was so successful I decided to record a new lesson giving more information about the famous route. Later you’ll listen to a short point of view story to consolidate your grammar. By the way, I will tell you some exciting news but it will be at the end of this episode. So keep listening until the end. I'll start by giving you some tips and suggestions for driving Route 66. How to organize your trip, pack the necessary equipment and enjoy the road trip of a lifetime. Plan your trip to Route 66 during the spring or fall because the weather gets incredibly hot during the summer, and some parts of the road can become unsafe during the winter. You should schedule your trip between March and early June or between September and November to get the most enjoyable driving conditions. Oklahoma and Texas have multiple tornadoes between late April and early June. If you are traveling during these periods, make sure you are paying attention to local weather forecasts for any tornado warnings. Start in Chicago or Santa Monica for the entire highway. If you're traveling in the spring, start in California and drive to Illinois. And if you're traveling in the fall, start in Illinois and drive to California. This way you'll enjoy the ideal weather conditions. And depending on how often you stop and how many places you explore, a one-way road trip from Chicago to Santa Monica or vice versa can take about 2-4 weeks. My advice is to drive a car or motorcycle for the most authentic experience. Due to the size of the road, it's the best way to experience Route 66. You'll have a great view of all the attractions and may spend the night in hotels or motels along the way. In some places, you may even be allowed to camp outside. However, if you only wish to visit the main cities on Route 66, you can book a 14-day train ride. #066 Route 66 | English Lesson - How to plan a road trip ESL READ the TEXT here: https://SpeakEnglishPod.com
Alaska Vacation Travel Video Guide

51:37
Travel video about destination Alaska. Alaska is a country situated on the edge of the Arctic and dream destination for wildlife and nature lovers who answer to the call of the wild. A land of bears, glaciers, pioneers and prospectors on the northern tip of the American continent. In Vancouver, Canada’s pearl of the Pacific Ocean, begins an extraordinary journey along the Alexander Archipelago in the Gulf Of Alaska, a charming capital with European flair. In English Bay a giant metal crab guards the planetarium and by aquabus our journey travels across False Creek to Science World with its marvellous glass globe that contains a museum of modern art. Ketchikan is a small town located five hundred and twenty six nautical miles north of Vancouver and was founded by the Tlingit Indians. In the 1880’s the town based its economy on salmon and timber but today relies upon tourism. Since 1900, Juneau has been the capital city of Alaska, the forty ninth state of the U.S.A. In 1880, Joe Juneau, Richard Harris and their Tlingit Indian leader, Chief Kowee, discovered gold in Gold Creek and the gold rush began. Glacier Bay was completely covered by ice and glaciers around four thousand years ago during the Little Ice Age. The ice melted and the ever-changing glaciers are today situated within the arms of the bay which stretches almost a hundred kilometres to the north. Barrow is the northernmost point of inhabited North America and five hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. The living conditions in the arctic wastelands are extremely harsh and most of the year it is bone-chillingly cold. Even today the promise of untamed nature and boundless freedom attracts us to America’s final wilderness. Alaska is full of wild extremes and stark contrasts, a fascinating land of pure adventure! -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. This island off the coast of India has long been on my bucket-list for loads of reasons, like having the best safari outside of Africa, boasting eight UNESCO World Heritage sites to explore, and lots of lovely, gorgeous beaches complete with idyllic white sand and crystal clear water that's perfect for surfing. In fact, for an island about a ¼ of the size of the UK, there's loads to see and do, depending,  of course, on what you want out of your trip. Coming up, I'm going to tell you about getting here, some tips on transport, then some stuff on food, money and language and some awesome places to visit. So, let's get on with it… We flew 10 hours direct from Heathrow to Colombo, which is Sri Lanka’s capital city. Flights arrive at Bandaranaike International airport, which is 30km north of the city. Taxis are very cheap in Sri Lanka, and this can be the easiest, and certainly quickest way to reach your destination from the airport. If you’re heading straight into Colombo you can catch the express bus which takes about 25 minutes, but to be honest the taxis are so cheap it’s a no-brainer. To enter the country, you’re gonna need a visa. Now this can be done when you get here, but, after ten hours in the air ..why bother with the extra admin!? Get it done before you leave. Applications cost $35 and take around 24 hours to process. Also, you’re gonna need to make sure that your vaccinations are up to date, like your tetanus and typhoid. Check with your GP beforehand. What do you need to know about public transport in Sri Lanka? Well, in all honesty, quite a bit… Public transport conditions aren't great, but are popular with locals as it's very cheap. Buses tend to leave when they’re full, so for anyone on a schedule we’d give them a miss. Also, trains are often slower and less efficient than simply getting a taxi. My advice: take anything described as luxury or express with a generous pinch of salt. The key thing in Sri Lanka is that your money goes a long way, for example our two-hour taxi  from Colombo to Unawatuna cost 9000 rupees, which is about 40 quid, so for this reason we made the most of getting around with private car hire and tuk-tuks. Hiring a driver to chauffeur you around is surprisingly affordable and, let's face it, way more luxurious! It's also a big timesaver which is a massive a bonus. The roads are in surprisingly good condition... ...just watch out for the tourists, the cyclists, the buffalo, stray dogs, and massive lizards they all make it a little hair-raising at times. We used Uber to navigate Colombo and Red Cabs for everywhere else. Failing that you could always haggle for a tuk tuk, which are ideal for quick journeys. There are a couple of things you need to know before you start off. Number 1 always agree the price before settings off and number 2 be direct about where you want to go, don’t settle for any detours or any other places they might want to take you. Anyway, up next, here are some of my favourite things to do in Sri Lanka. Unawatuna is loved by locals and tourists alike, and with palm trees, white sands and blue waters, it's easy to see why it’s one of Sri Lanka’s most popular beaches. Right behind the beach is a small shopping strip for souvenirs and restaurants... … And Ladies, going topless on the beach is a definite no-no, and if you're a couple, make the P in PDA stand for PRIVATE, not PUBLIC. OK, Newsflash!!! Sri Lanka has the best safari outside of Africa since the country has one of the highest rates of indigenous plants and animals in the world. Udawalawe National Park is a personal highlight of mine and home to some 200 different species.

During your romp around the scenic coastline, make a stop at the Syndey Opera House and eye its magnificent architectural design. Looking for a little more adventure? Jungfrau Switzerland via Interlaken and Grindelwald

15:56
Please subscribe: http://bit.ly/2pmdyeu Train trip to the Jungfrau Mountain at the Top of Europe, near Interlaken and Grindelwald, Switzerland. Europe's highest railroad line will bring you up to a spectacular world of perpetual winter, dominated by massive, snow-covered peaks reaching over 13,000 feet high and surrounding the continent's longest glacier. Many consider the train ride up one of the finest, most picturesque in the world, where getting to the top is half the fun. The journey from Interlaken to Grindlewald can be easily made on the Bernese Overland railway, and it travels on a scenic route through the valley and along the river and passes several villages. There are magnificent mountain views all along the way. The hundred-year-old rail line from Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch is one of Europe's great engineering wonders, the world's highest subway climbing through four miles of tunnels inside the rock. The beginning of this 50-minute journey is not underground, and momentarily offers a great view; so sit on the right side of the train. The train makes two brief stops enroute to let everyone out for a walk through short tunnels to viewing stations, where you look through windows at the nearby mountain peaks and the landscapes far below. Upon arrival at the end of the rail line, you walk through an ice tunnel decorated with ice carvings and then approach a sight too amazing for description or film. You really have to pay your dues and go there in person to experience the exhilaration of standing at the top of the world, surrounded by Alpine giants of snow. The observation deck and snowfield are at 11,350 feet, flanked by the jagged peaks of the Jungfrau (13,642 ft.) and the Mönch (13,449 ft.), which form a valley that cradles the Aletsch Galcier, an endless field of snow that stretches 13 miles to the horizon. Plan on spending an hour or two at the top, playing in the snow and exploring the various levels and exhibits of the visitor center, then catch a convenient train back down the route you came. You return to Kleine Scheidegg, where you can change trains for a different return route that will take you through Wengen and down to Lauterbrunnen. http://tourvideos.com/

By train across Sri Lanka | DW Documentary

42:26
Asia’s most beautiful railway line? The “Main Line” cuts through tea plantations and jungle, then passes Buddhist temples and relicts of the British Empire. In the 19th century the British built a railway in what was then their colony of Ceylon. Their idea was to transport goods such as tea from the highlands to the port of Colombo. Today it’s mainly only locals and tourists who use the so-called "Main Line." The route is considered one of the most picturesque in the whole of Asia. Our trip takes us from the capital, Colombo, to Ella in the highlands. Our first stop is one of the country’s largest elephant orphanages. And then on to Kandy, the former capital of the Singhalese kingdom. The city is home to the famous Temple of the Tooth, which is said to house the Buddha’s top left canine. The train then winds its way further up into the highlands. We watch tea pickers at work and go to a tea factory to discover where the aroma comes from. Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka’s highest town at an altitude of almost 1900 meters, where a racecourse still brings the colonial era back to life. The stations have also retained their own colonial charm: in 1901, a signaling system was set up to make the long journey safer. And those suffering from the altitude can catch their breath at the final stop, the spa in Ella. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. But it’s a modern City waiting to be discovered as well. So in this guide, we’re going to help you make the most of it! We’re going to look at food, money, transport, and a whole lot more, but first let’s get from the airport. Vancouver International airport is less than 10 miles from Downtown area, and is Canada's second busiest airport, after Toronto Pearson International. Getting between the airport and the City Centre is relatively straightforward – a 20-minute taxi ride will cost around $45. Another way into the City is the SkyTrain – it's a bit like London's DLR with driverless carriages, you take the Canada line for half an hour or so, and it costs around $7. Vancouver has an extensive public transport network, as well as being a really easy place to dive. Here’s what you need to know: Now it’s not often that we can tell someone to drive a car through a major City, but in Vancouver drive away until your heart's content! We hired a car and cannot recommend it enough. Thanks to the Cities grid system, wide roads with plenty of easy understood signs and generally well-tempered drivers - driving was an absolute doddle! There’s ample parking wherever you go, even at the busy tourist hotspots, not to mention fuel is cheap, and traffic generally wasn’t too bad in our experience.

2018 Amtrak Cross Country Train Trip - Florida to Oregon

11:40
Taking the train cross country was something I'd always wanted to do. A bucket list trip. So, I booked a one way ticket to Florida, and traveled back home to Oregon on the rail. My goal was to document the trip, but it's hard to capture the full experience. So, I thought it would be helpful to answer some questions: // What Music Did You Use? // Andy White: https://soundcloud.com/andywhitemusic-1 https://www.reverbnation.com/andywhite8 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNPJxpgsFkgA4tZ4j7ZN7FA Gramatik: https://soundcloud.com/gramatik AllttA: https://soundcloud.com/alltta/drugs-instrumental-20syl // How much did the trip cost? // The train ticket was $369, coach seats the whole trip. Sleeper cars can range anywhere from $200 to as much as $1,000 per leg of the trip, depending on the time of year. // How long did it take, and what was the route? // The train left Orlando, Florida on Monday evening, and it arrives in Portland, Oregon on Friday Morning. So 4 nights total. My trip was a bit farther as I had to go from Portland, Oregon to Chemult, Oregon, which arrived Friday evening. Orlando---Washington DC---Chicago---Portland // Were you on the train the entire time? // No. There were two extended layovers - one in Washington DC for about 9 hours. There is a metro station at Union Station - so easy access to get anywhere you need to go. In Chicago, my layover was about 5.5 hours. Enough time to get out, see some sights and get some food. You can check your bags at the train stations as well, for about $10. // What were some must have items on the train? // Ear plugs. Eye mask. Those two in particular. Ear plugs to drown out the noise of other passengers, the noise of the train on the rails, the train horn. Crucial. Eye mask because there are lights in the train at night. It's dim like an airplane would be, but still lighting here and there. Snacks. Tablet. Headphones. Chargers. Each seat has 2 110V outlets, and each of the tables in the observation cars do as well, so power is never an issue. Neck pillow. Blanket. // You didn't mention the food. How was the food? // I would say that train food is slightly better than airplane food. The menu in the dining car on all of the trains was the same - so it did get a bit old. For breakfast, prices ranged from $8 to $14, lunch $12-$15 and dinner $16-$25. There is also a snack bar that has candy, snacks, drinks (beer and wine), as well as some sandwiches and burgers. The service in the dining car was very good, and the staff were all very friendly. Traveling alone, meals in the dining car were always fun because you're typically paired with 1-3 strangers. So you're typically exchanging stories for around an hour. Here is a link to the dining page on Amtrak: https://www.amtrak.com/meal-choices-and-menus-at-a-glance // Sleeping in coach. Was it that bad? // I'd say, yes. If it were an overnight trip, not so bad. Even 2 nights. But by night 3 and 4 - it started to take a toll. The first 2 nights of the trip I had someone in the seat right next to me. That changes the experience quite a bit, as it's pretty close quarters. Having two seats to yourself makes a pretty big difference. Not in comfort as much as just feeling a bit of privacy. Comfort wise, it's just difficult to really get comfortable in those seats. There's not really any getting around that. Ear plugs and and eye mask are pretty invaluable. // How were the bathrooms? Were there showers? // The bathrooms were similar to an airplane bathroom. And there were plenty of bathrooms, so you never felt like you had to hurry, or had someone waiting for you. There was also a larger bathroom with a bit more space with a changing area. No showers. There are showers in the sleeper cars if you went that route. // What about your belongings? Were they safe? // I had a backpack with camera gear, tablet, headphones, chargers, etc. that I kept with me 90% of the time. Generally, I felt like my things would have been safe on my seat - but better safe than sorry. My carry on luggage (airplane overhead bin size) - I kept in storage racks on the bottom level of the train. In theory, anyone could have grabbed it and stepped off the train at their stop, but it made it with me the whole trip.

Train to Trail - Harpers Ferry Winter Backpacking Trip - Hiking in West Virginia

01:13:34
Join Mike and I for for a “Train to Trail” Winter Camping, Backpacking, Campfire cooking, & Hiking adventure in Harpers Ferry, WV. GPS Data at http://www.sintax77.com We tried something a bit different for fun on this winter camping trip – instead of driving, we decided to take an Amtrak train directly to the trailhead. This is actually and idea that Mike and I had been kicking around for a while now. The first challenge was finding an interesting trail that was actually close to a train station, without a need for secondary transportation or an excessive walk. After a bit of research, we determined that Harpers Ferry, West Virginia fit the criteria quite well. The train practically dumps you right on the Appalachian Trail. We booked our tickets, packed our bags, and hit the trail, er, I mean, train station. For an easier read, check out my full blog post and trip report here: http://www.sintax77.com/train-to-trail-harpers-ferry-winter-backpacking-trip-hiking-in-virginia/ With 4 days and 3 nights off, we had decent amount of time to play with on this trip. The challenge however, would be that we needed to plan an out and back trip that didn’t put us to far away from the train station on our final morning, rather than doing a loop like we normally prefer. Fortunately, we quickly realized that to be a perfect excuse to do a a laid back, more camping, less hiking kind of trip. The plan? After leaving the train behind,we would hop on the Appalachian trail for a few miles – just long enough to feel the seclusion of the deep winter woods, and set up a base camp for the duration of the trip. Other than that, we really had no hard set plans, other than relaxing, having a good time, and brushing up on our campfire cooking skills. Did we succeed? I guess you’ll just have to watch and see… Trailhead: Harpers Ferry Amtrak Train Station Trails Used Leave Harpers Ferry via Appalachian Trail South After around 3 miles, bushwack West to unofficial campsite. Inside Japan's Bullet Train 🗼 Japan Trip Part 4

09:47
Part 4, what can I say at this point that hasn't been said already by the likes of Winston Churchill and the back street boys; i suppose I could explain the video: In today's segment of our lives we go inside Japan's Bullet train and let it vibrate our blood into soda, we also see a mountain shrine and go Nightcrawling. It's mainly about the trains though; 'gotta get some hot angles of dem choo-choo bois', that's a Churchill quote by the way. You can go to most major electronics store and they should carry it. There are a few options, but I’ll cover the 2 basic types that I think is the best for travelers. (1) SIM card with a daily data transfer limits 220mb per day. You can get it for 7 days or 15 days. (2) SIM cards with a total data transfer limit of 1.5 Gb or 3GB that work for 30 day period. It doesn’t have a daily transfer limit which I personally prefer. And if I use up all the data in only a few days, you can just buy a new card. (* Note that the prices and data plans are always changing so depending on when you see this video, prices might have already changed. ) 7:39 #6 Smoking in Japan - https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2018/06/27/national/tokyo-lawmakers-approve-anti-smoking-ordinance-capital-gears-2020-olympics/#.W4jJC9gzbUI 9:18 #7 Riding the Train 10:16 #8 Non-Tipping Culture 11:52 #9 Hotel Fees in Japan 12:52 #10 Police in Japan ----- Channel Support ----- Want to help SUPPORT my channel or wanna buy me a BEER?
