Greece has more than 16,000 kilometers (9,320 miles) of coastline, 200,000 beaches, 6,000 islands (and islets). Greece's coastline is by far the longest coastline in the Mediterranean sea, and the tenth longest in the world. The deepest point in the Mediterranean Sea is called the "Calypso Deep", it is located in the Ionian Sea in Greece, and is 5,267 meters deep (17,280 feet). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The quality of coastal bathing waters in Greece is systematically monitored since 1988 (according to Directive 76/160/EEC), and since then Greece has been receiving excellent reports on it's bathing water sites, with more than 95% of them meeting the most stringent guide values (excellent quality). According to the 2012 European bathing water quality report of the European Environment Agency, Greece and Cyprus have the cleanest coastal bathing waters in Europe. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Regardless of your location in Greece, a beach won't be far away. Beaches in Greece have a serene, peaceful atmosphere. Most beaches have shallow, calm, crystal clear waters that make them ideal for young children and families. Due to the country's peninsular shape, big waves do not usually reach the beaches, except those that are exposed to the open ocean, which are mostly preferred by windsurfers. Apart from the long wide sandy beaches, and those lined with pine (in the North), or palm (in Crete) trees and lush green grass in the north, there are many small rocky, pebbly inlets, perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. There are also numerous remote beaches that are only accessible by boat, and other secluded naturalist beaches lining the coasts of Greece, where nudism is quite prevalent. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Conditions in various beach destinations in the world can differ greatly. During the tourist season, Tropical Weather (in contrast to Mediterranean Weather), can produce unpleasant atmospheric conditions like: Sudden storms, monsoons, floods, clouds, extreme humidity and precipitation, unpleasantly warm sea temperature, dangerous strong ocean rip currents that can pull swimmers away from the shore without them even noticing and huge waves that can cause sea water to lose its clarity and become foamy, murky and dirty. Moreover, due to vast presence of algae, low salinity/iodine levels, excessive bacterial and micro-organic activity (which can be highly pathogenic), the sea color in the Tropical Zones can obtain a repulsive, slimy green color. In contrast to the Tropics, Greek summer is always hot, calm, sunny, cloudless and dry and the Greek sea is blue, clear and a lot safer, not only health-wise but also due to the fact that encounters with dangerous/venomous sea creatures and organisms is extremely rare in Greece, as such species are not endemic to the Mediterranean region. (There is only one anecdotal tale of a fatal shark attack in the Greek islands, and that was reported nearly a century ago). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Video Info: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music: 00:00 - 07:08 "Salt Tank - Sargasso Sea" (InternalRecords) 07:09 - 09:08 "Mikro - Eikones" (UndoRecords/ EMI /Warner) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pictures: Mainly from Flickr / Panoramio / Trekearth accounts. Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, and the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, and Corsica. Crete and a number of surrounding islands and islets constitute the region of Crete , one of the 13 top-level administrative units of Greece. The capital and the largest city is Heraklion. As of 2011, the region had a population of 623,065. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crete The Aegean Sea is an elongated embayment of the Mediterranean Sea located between the Greek and Anatolian peninsulas, i.e., between the mainlands of Greece and Turkey. In the north, it is connected to the Marmara Sea and Black Sea by the Dardanelles and Bosporus. In spite of worsening weather conditions in recent days, refugee and migrant arrivals in Greece continue to climb and are expected to reach the 400,000 mark shortly. Greece remains by far the largest single entry point for new sea arrivals in the Mediterranean, followed by Italy with 131,000 arrivals so far in 2015. With the new figures from Greece, the total number of refugees and migrants crossing the Mediterranean this year stands now close to the 530,000 mark. The small island of Lesvos, once a popular tourist resort, has been at the frontline of this influx of arrivals. Video has emerged of dozens of people who fled into the sea to escape the flames of wildfires that swept through the Greek resort of Mati last week. The fires trapped people in cars and on the edge of cliffs, while others were forced to jump off to survive, or rush into the sea from the beach. Video and stills shot by a survivor on Monday (July 23) showed people huddled together in the sea to save themselves from the flames. (3 Jan 2019) LEAD IN : Dozens of abandoned shipwrecks lie around the Gulf of Elefsina, near Greece's major port of Piraeus. Now the authorities are beginning to remove them, as concerns about the environment because of leaking hazards like oil or shipping safety mount. STORY-LINE: The hulking remains of abandoned and rusting ships rise up through the water, the glory days of sailing the world's seas and oceans long gone. Dozens of abandoned cargo and passenger ships lie semi-submerged or completely sunken in and near the Gulf of Elefsina, an industrial area of shipyards and factories near Greece's major port of Piraeus. Now the Greek authorities have begun to remove the ships, some of which have been there for decades, saying they are both an environmental hazard and a danger to modern shipping. Dimosthenis Bakopoulos, Head of the Public Ports Authority says "You don't need to be a scientist to understand that shipwrecks are a environmental timebomb which degrades the environment of seaside municipalities." " From the port of Piraeus to the island of Salamina that lies off of Elefsina, the sea is littered with 52 such shipwrecks" Bakopoulos adds, noting that some of the ships were still leaking petroleum products into the sea. Charalampos Gargaretas, Chief Executive Officer of Elefsina Port Authority says that in addition to the environmental risk, safety issues also lurk beneath the waves. "There are spots where there are 2-3 shipwrecks together; where the sea waters which are navigated by other seaworthy boats. That is an absolutely major problem for navigation as a whole. Consider that the actual spots where there are shipwrecks are marked with buoys so that other boats that cross near there know that the depth is less (due to these submerged ships under the water surface) and that if not careful could collide into them. Thus, the issue of navigation is as important as the environmental issue." But the process has been wrought with difficulties. The owners of the ships vary from individuals to inheritors to companies registered in countries ranging from Greece to the Marshall Islands, Britain and Honduras. Some have gone bankrupt, some are no longer traceable, officials say. So the authorities have put in motion a process where the abandoned ships can be appropriated by the state. Salvage companies then take over the job of breaking up the ships and removing the remains, a job they undertake free of charge to the state in return for being able to sell the metal for scrap explains Charalampos Gargaretas "the advantage lies in the value of the metal each ship is made of. So, the private investor will have to decide if he will benefit or not from selling the pieces of iron, as we call it, and make a profit. We benefit from the shipwrecks removed from here by not paying for the cost of their removal ourselves. After all our port authority does not have the appropriate machines and tools to remove them from the sea, cut the metal and remove the parts from the port." Another problem the Greek authorities have faced is some opposition from locals who fear the environmental impact of large ships being demolished in their area. Footage released on Monday by the the news agency Deniz Haber Ajansı allegedly shows a Greek Coast Guard vessel following a Turkish boat in the Aegean Sea. The captain of a Turkish freighter said that Greek coast guard opened fire on his vessel as it sailed through the sea that separates the two countries. Reports suggest the Greek coast guard opened fire after the Turkish freighter refused to dock at a port in the Greek Island of Rhodes for inspection. The Turkish Foreign Ministry soon released a statement, condemning what it called "an unmeasured act" by Greece. The Greek coast guard is yet to comment on the incident. During summer months (Mai–Sep.) the entire Aegean Sea offers one of the best sailing waters in Southern Europe. It has good sailing weather with strong winds, (Meltemi), countless beautiful islands with plenty of save harbours and anchorages in all directions all combined with a Mediterranean-Greece flair. For ambitious sailors the Aegean is definitely a wonderful sailing ground very worthwhile to be explored.

Ferries to Greek Islands: http://www.ferriesgreekislands.com/ The Aegean Islands are the group of islands in the Aegean Sea, with mainland Greece to the west and north and Turkey to the east; the island of Crete delimits the sea to the south, those of Rhodes, Karpathos and Kasos to the southeast. The ancient name of the Aegean Sea, Archipelago, was later applied to the islands it contains and is now used more generally, to refer to any island group. Almost all of the Aegean Islands belong to Greece, being split among nine administrative peripheries. The only sizable possessions of Turkey in the Aegean Sea are Imbros (Gökçeada) and Tenedos (Bozcaada), in the northeastern end of the Sea. Turkish islands also include various smaller islets off Turkey's western coast. ( source Wikipedia )

Free video about Aegean Sea Beach. This free video was created for you by http://epsos.de and can be used for free under the creative commons license with the attribution of epSos.de as the original author of this Aegean Sea Beach video. Thank you for supporting the creative commons movement !! The Aegean Sea Beach or the Aegean Sea Beach is a marginal Sea Beach of the Mediterranean. Riparian countries are Greece and Turkey. The Turkish region Ege is named after the Aegean Sea Beach. The Aegean Sea Beach is the north-eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea Beach. In the west and north, it is from the Greek mainland and on the east by the coast of Asia Minor of Turkey limited. The Cretan island arc with the islands of Kythera, Antikythera, Crete, Kasos, Karpathos and Rhodes, the mountain ranges of the Peloponnese with the Taurus mountains combines in southwestern Turkey, forms the southern end. Connection with the open Mediterranean Sea Beach in the southeast Levantine Sea Beach and southwest Libyan Sea Beach. The name is derived from Aegeus, a mythical king of Athens. When his son Theseus to Crete moved to Athens from the shameful tribute deliveries to Crete every nine years seven youths and as many virgins try to free Minotaur, Theseus promised his father to raise on his return white instead of the usual black sails, if he had survived. Upon his arrival in Crete, Theseus met Ariadne, the daughter of King Minos. He fell in love with her and both devised a plan to defeat the Minotaur. Ariadne gave Theseus with a red ball of yarn, with whose help he should find the way back out of the labyrinth after defeating the Minotaur. The plan worked. Theseus, however, wanted to marry Ariadne take to Athens, left her with a stay on Naxos because Dionysus appeared to him in a dream and claims to Ariadne presented. About his grief Theseus forgot to have put the white sails. When his father Aegeus saw the black sails on the horizon, he thought his son had not survived the mission. He then rushed down the cliff into the Sea Beach, which is named after him until today. The Aegean Sea Beach is considered the birthplace of two great ancient civilizations, the Minoan civilization and that of ancient Greece. Later in the Aegean ruled Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Genoese, Venetians and Ottomans. In ancient times were the Aegean islands, among which Crete, Euboea ( Evia ), and - by some distance - Lesbos are greatest, a source of cultural development, we concentrated especially on Sea Beachfaring, the trade and the transfer of knowledge. The combination of different cultures of the eastern Mediterranean region was the geographical conditions favored. On the Aegean coast on the Turkish mainland open some of the largest tributaries of the Aegean Sea Beach, including the large meander and the small meander. Other major rivers flow to the Aegean Sea Beach from northern Greece, including Aliakmona, Vardar, Struma, Nestos and Mariza. Together with the inherent within these islands and the coastal regions of Southern Europe, Western Asia and North Africa is the Mediterranean Sea Beach to the Mediterranean, the private Mediterranean climate has and by its own flora and fauna is characterized. The European Mediterranean Sea Beach, as most of mainlands and surrounded by the ocean separate the Mediterranean between the three continents of Africa, Europe and Asia. It is the marginal Sea Beaches of the Atlantic Ocean counted. The Mediterranean, through its own especially in the east and north, bordering Sea Beachs and bays strongly divided. In the depths of the Sea Beach is divided into two distinct pools, a western and an eastern represented by the seismically highly active threshold are separated Tunisia-Italy. Here stands the Tyrrhenian basin still from a third, independent basin. Rare is the division into a western, central and eastern parts. In this case, the marine areas are around the Italian peninsula calculated for the central Mediterranean: Ligurian Sea Beach, Tyrrhenian Sea Beach, Strait of Sicily, the Gulf of Gabès (Lesser Syrtis), Ionian Sea Beach, Adriatic Sea Beach. On the west coast of the Mediterranean is the Iberian Peninsula with Spain and Portugal, which in the north and west by the Atlantic Ocean and is bordered to the northeast by the Pyrenees Mountains is linked to France. East follows the boot-shaped Italian Peninsula with the bulk of Italy. The differently defined in its expansion Balkan Peninsula, between the Adriatic, Aegean Sea Beach and the Black Sea Beach comprises the bulk of South Eastern Europe. Also Asia Minor is sometimes seen as a peninsula between the Black and Mediterranean. Thank you for supporting the creative commons movement !!

Between the misty mountains and breathtaking coastline of the island of Kefalonia stands three incredible sea-view villas: Villa Odysseus, Villa Penelope and Villa Siora Kate. These three nearly identical villas sit side-by-side on the same secluded 4 acres, facing an unmatched view of the Ionian Sea. Rent one to sleep 4, or rent both to sleep 8 and share a holiday to remember. The two villas have their own private swimming pool suspended above the sea. High Above the Sea Take your place on the sea-view hillside, a peaceful and private location with uninterrupted views of the blue horizon. Close your eyes, feel the warm sun on your skin, and breathe in the sea air. Located at the end of a secluded road, you won’t hear any traffic here...just ocean breezes.
