Cultural difference in business | Valerie Hoeks | TEDxHaarlem
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. One of the elements of the cultural difference between Europe and China is the importance that is given to relationships. In the West you would assume the importance to be the same, but there is a significant distinction. In China connections with the right people help you to get things done, to survive and to succeed. Whereas in the West content is predominant, in China the way people interact with each other strongly influences the working environment. 'Face' and long-term effects are taken into consideration. Valérie Hoeks (1982) studied Sinology at the Leiden University and has been active in China for over a decade as a traveller, a student and later as an entrepreneur. As soon as she set foot on Chinese soil she knew she would come back many times. In 2010 Valérie co-founded China Inroads in collaboration with with her Dutch and Chinese business partner. China Inroads provides a strong foothold for innovative companies that want to expand their business to the Chinese market. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Management Styles 1
http://www.tvchoice.uk.com - 31 mins, 1992 This classic best seller vividly illustrates different management styles in action. Tony Spence is the epitome of the autocratic manager. Shouting and swearing, he bullies and generally humiliates his team of sales people. By contrast, supermarket personnel manager June takes a more bureaucratic approach, strictly applying the rules and regulations. Consultative manager Geoff believes in the human touch and says his door "is always open". Marketing manager Marion has a special challenge: trying to push through change against bitter opposition in a local council. WARNING: There is some strong language which has been bleeped. What it's Like Working In Japan | "Short" Version
I've never worked in Japan. I mean I work in Japan, but I work from my home and have never needed Japanese language or workplace skills. But I do know people who have, so I set up interviews with 8 of them to see what their experiences were like. All of them worked in the "real" Japanese workplace, from small, modern companies to big traditional ones. Or in other words, they worked jobs that didn't involve teaching English. They needed to be proficient in the Japanese language and business culture. All the interviewees speak English, have lived outside of Japan for some period of time, and have university degrees. So these are not your typical Japanese workers, let's just be ultra clear on that. But I think they do help give insight into what it's like working in Japan and how it compares to working in a global or Western workplace. This is the short version of the interviews. For the hour long version please check it out at https://youtu.be/qrWkgVu2MHo **CORRECTION: It's illegal to not pay overtime, even for full-time employees. There can be some exceptions for management. So I was wrong in saying that full-time employees don't typically get paid overtime. Sorry for the screw up. IMS 2013- Is The American Style of Business Killing Dance Music
In a highly anticipated conversation about the "invasion" of American entities into dance music culture, emotions ran high as many on the panel felt that indeed dance music is at risk by the mergers, acquisitions, and consolidations occurring in North America. Key Points Discussed: -"We've been making money with my artists and booking them everywhere, and suddenly in the last five years, there's been a lot more interest in owning that music [in America]" said Maria May (CAA). -"The new style of business is more about winning than it is caring." When asked why America has "suddenly" embraced dance music, David Waxman (Ultra Records) pointed out something that many people often over look. "Electronic music has been going on in the United States, but the difference now is the power of the Internet" he said, mentioning also the generational waves that seem to occur with the genre in the United States. -"It's not the money, it's the money. Shelly Finkel (SFX) quotes legendary promoter Bill Graham on artists' willingness to accept huge payouts and contra how Shelly's desire is to elevate the genre not exploit it. -The term "EDM" "The people calling it 'EDM' now are likely the same people calling it 'techno' ten years ago," David Waxman (Ultra Records) said. "EDM will come and go, but dance music will always stay." -Ash Pournouri (At Night Management) manager of Avicii weighed in the debate on underground artist and commercial artist choosing either or and America playing a major part in their decision due to the massive financial gains of going commercial

Have you faced cultural difference in leadership? A case study
Have you ever faced a cultural challenge at work where you were confronted with different management styles from what you are used to? Watch Thomas Hechmann (speaker of BIMCO’s “Intercultural Competence” seminar) talk about his first managerial experience in 2008 with a Danish shipping company in the US, and the challenges he encountered. As a Danish manager in the US, he had to manage a few American staff. Coming from Denmark, he believed the Danish management style with a “flat” and democratic structure where employees are included in decision making process was the good way. He was not aware that there was a different mentality in the US toward management style. Because Thomas consulted and involved his staff on decision making process, he was perceived by his staff as a “weak” leader and not knowing the business direction. Thomas believed that his Danish management style was the right way to go (and perhaps by today’s standards it probably is). But because he was not aware of these cultural differences when it came to power and authority, it caused complete misunderstanding, which did not help foster good working relationship. As a result, Thomas had to adjust his management style to suit his American team, and show strong leadership by making management decisions himself and conveying those decisions to his staff, which was not something he was accustomed to. As the saying goes, “when in Rome, do as the Roman's do” (with respect), and the relationship with his staff improved thereafter.
