The European origins of fashion have reduced us to Google the occasional tricky terminology and label names. While we have mastered the more commonly used ones, we are still left with a hesitant linger more than a confident roll of the tongue. Whether your worldly travels have polished your elocution or if your learn-from-a-screen, less than covetable articulation (which does nothing to deter you away from label love); there are others like you. We did the rounds and challenged the coolest crew to pronounce the trickiest words and here’s what it sounds like. ENGLISH SLANG – 15 trendy fashion words

11:48
Learn new vocabulary about beauty and fashion. Just like fashion trends, the words we use in English to talk about makeup, clothing, hair, and style, change quickly. The words that are used today are not the same as five years ago. There is a whole world of beauty vloggers and fashion hauls on YouTube. If you’re into fashion, you’ll want to look en point when wearing items from your most recent haul. If makeup is your thing, you’ll be wearing a red lip or using a palette to get a smoky eye. You’ll be sporting balayage or ombre hair (don’t worry -- I’ll teach you how to pronounce those new French-origin words too!). Watch and never forget the boyfriends of Instagram. Then take the quiz at https://www.engvid.com/english-slang-15-trendy-fashion-words/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. In this lesson we're going to look at trendy fashion words. These are words that I'm hearing used a lot now around our times, so let's have a look through the words and learn them one-by-one so we can sound really cool and fashionable. Let's start with: "en pointe". If something is en pointe, it means perfect, it looks so good. What you're wearing today, that dress, your dress is en pointe. It's so fashionable, it's so, so hot right now. Very similar meaning to something being "on-trend". If we think about the word "trendy", it means fashionable. But to say something is trendy isn't fashionable enough anymore, we have to change it and say: "on-trend". We could also change it and say: "bang-on-trend". If it's bang-on-trend, it's even more now, happening right this minute. Next, if we're talking about makeup... When I was younger we used to talk about wearing lipstick or wearing red lipstick, or a pink lipstick, but now instead of saying the word "lipstick", it's described as: "I'm wearing a red lip today." And the same thing, instead of saying: "eye shadow", "Oh, I bought this eye shadow. It's blue. Look at it on my eyes", you don't say that because it doesn't... Doesn't sound... Doesn't sound fashionable enough, it doesn't sound like you know about makeup. So, what people who know about makeup say is they say: "Oh, today I'm wearing a smokey eye." I'm not wearing a smokey eye, I haven't got anything on, but a smokey eye is when the eye shadow looks grey or dark, and it's most often worn at night when you're going out. You get your eye shadow these days in "palettes". And instead of wearing just one eye shadow, like, wearing a pink eye shadow, the eye shadow palette comes with about... Well, as many as you want I suppose, but from 4 to 12 eye shadows, and what they do is they put on the different eye shadows from the palette. So, they will talk about creating the smokey eye from palette number three, or whatever. Next is a makeup term that's been around for a few years. This makeup term came from when the Kardashians got famous because the kind of makeup Kim Kardashian would use was a kind of makeup that shades her face to give it a certain... To make it look like there's more shadow on the face and a more dramatic kind of foundation, which is done with different brushes. It's a kind of makeup technique called "contouring". Apparently it comes... Apparently it's a makeup technique that's been around for ages, but before, drag queens used to use it, men who... Men who were still men, but dressed up as women mostly for performance and being in shows and things like that. So it originally comes from there. And I did experiment with contouring. I once watched a few too many YouTube videos, and it all went terribly wrong, so moving on from contouring. Next we have "drugstore makeup". In England we don't have drugstores, we have pharmacies where you go and buy your medicine, and you can buy toiletries, but we don't have drugstores. We have chains of drugstores, for example, Boots or Superdrug, and you can go in there and buy makeup, but we never call those places drugstores. Yet, when people talk about makeup now, the younger generation, they will... They will talk about buying drugstore makeup, which means the kind of makeup that only... Only costs you a few pounds to buy, it's not the really, really expensive makeup, and you can... You can buy it easily, close... Close... Close where you live. So, drugstore makeup is the kind of makeup you can do that doesn't cost you so much money as the really expensive brands. So that's an American term, but it's being used a lot here now in England. The next... The next two terms are about hair. These are newer fashionable techniques for dying your hair, and the two words come from French. In the English pronunciation we'd say: "balayage".

Who Dictates Fashion Trends?

02:45
If you're interested in licensing this or any other Big Think clip for commercial or private use, contact our licensing partner Executive Interviews: https://www.executiveinterviews.biz/rightsholders/bigthink/ According to fashion historian Valerie Steele, nobody does—not even magazine editors, designers or celebrities. Question: Who dictates fashion? Valerie Steele: Nobody really dictates fashion. I think a lot of people believe that designers are kind of cabal who plot that they will have a new style and then that will put everything you have out of fashion. It doesn't work that way. Most fashion changes incrementally, a little bit season by season. Editors are gatekeepers of a sort- they are presenting what they think are the important trends. And retailers are also gatekeepers of a sort. They buy what they think their customers will ultimately purchase. But the fashion is not only in clothes, but also in food, and music, and even names. If you name your child Christopher, and you suddenly discover that there are lots of other little Christophers in his nursery school class, there is no group of people who are promoting the idea of naming your child Christopher. There's no money behind it, no advertising campaign, but names go in trends just as clothes do. It really is kind of mysterious; something in the air moving from what was the most popular style or name, or dance style. Last season, kind of gradually, individual designers can have an input in that, but as Christian Dior said, they're just proposing, ultimately it's the customers who decide what's going to be the new fashion. Question: What will this era be remembered for? Valerie Steele: It's very hard to sum up a decade. And decades don't really quite work in terms of fashion. We do think of the 70's as the decade that taste forgot. You know? And the 80's as a kind of sort of decade of excess, the 90's of minimalism. Or sometimes people talk about the 90's in terms of grunge, but that was a much more short-lived term. My guess would be that people will look back at the early 21st Century; they would start to see more and more globalism in fashion. Particularly the rise of Russia and China as more of an influence. These are people who are buying more and more of the fashions. They're producing more, and I think they are going to be much bigger players in fashion. So, I would guess that when we look back on it, we'll say, "Oh, we didn't notice so much at the time," but a lot of the taste that is being expressed is really appealing to say, the new Chinese high-fashion customer. Conscious Fashion Terms Defined: Slow, Eco, Ethical & Sustainable Fashion

While most of these definitions we could elaborate more on, I thought it would be nice to give an overall idea of each. The conscious fashion movement is going strong, but it seems at times there is a lot of confusion on what each term really means. I'm constantly learning and evolving within this movement, but I hope this video paints a better picture & opens the door for more discussion. WTF is a Living Wage? More Ethical Fashion Terms Explained!

02:24
Do you think we should implement a living wage in the US? Why or why not? Let me know! Transcription: Hello my compassionate fashionistas. If you're a regular reader of my blog, and you should be. Are you? Cause you should be, please read my blog, it's good I swear. I work really hard on it. Anyway! Then you've heard me throw around the term living wage a lot. Right, if you're at all into sustainable fashion if you're reading about it you've heard this term, living wage. But what does that really mean? Here in the US we think of living wage as pretty similar to minimum wage but that's actually not the same thing. There's a big debate going on about minimum wage in the US. And there should be. Because there's actually a huge difference between minimum wage and living wage. So minimum wage is the very least amount that an employer can pay an employee per hour. The idea of the minimum wage was that this would be enough to live on. But as you might know from talking to your grandma stuff used to be way cheaper back in the day. So things got more expensive but the minimum amount that employers can pay employees hasn't gone up at the same rate. So what's happening and what this big debate is about is should we raise that minimum wage to a living wage. Finally! Let's get to the point! What the heck is a living wage, right? So we don't have a definition for that here in the US but certain places like the UK and New Zealand do. And the way they define it is one adult, working 40 hours a week with no additional income should be making enough money to provide the basic necessities for their life. Food, shelter, clothing, medical expenses, putting away a little bit of money for emergencies. It's about having a modest, but comfortable life. Like you should be able to afford all of the basic things that you need without having to get a second or third job. Which is why I get really really excited when fashion companies aren't only paying their employees a minimum wage, they're paying them their employees a living wage. All right! Thanks so much for watching please like subscribe comment below. What do you guys think, do you think that here in the US we should raise our minimum wage to a living wage? Let me know! Thanks! Bye!
