This Mathematician Hacked His Way To True Love On OkCupid

03:57
Chris McKinlay was just like thousands of other graduate students. He spent most of his nights chiseling away at his PhD thesis—an arcane treatise on large-scale data processing with supercomputers—living on a couple hundred dollars per month, sleeping in his cramped cubicle, and scrolling listlessly through online dating sites in search of love or, at least, a worthwhile diversion. That is, until he hacked OkCupid. McKinlay, frustrated by months of online dating with meager results, began to think about the complex algorithms that OkCupid uses to match compatible users. “The first thing I did was gather a lot of data from OkCupid and mine all that data for patterns,” he told NOVA. But McKinlay’s passing interest in collecting OkCupid data soon evolved into an obsession. “I started using all of my supercomputing time analyzing OkCupid match question data.” Within a matter of months, the unassuming 35-year-old math whiz was the top match for more than 30,000 women on OkCupid. He was receiving up to ten messages per day (most men receive zero) and occasionally scheduling two or three dates on top of each other just to keep up with the demand. Although the project involved pretty heavy statistical modeling, McKinlay says that his general strategy was simple: He first created realistic bots to mine information about OkCupid users in his area, and then used the results to optimize his own OkCupid profile so that he’d be automatically matched with the sort of people whom he wanted to date. But the hack worked even better than planned—catapulting McKinlay to the top of OkCupid’s algorithm. “I was, like, trending globally on OkCupid,” he says. Even after news of the hack broke in early 2014, not everyone was impressed with McKinlay’s stunt. Hacking OkCupid, “reflects a weird mathematician-pickup artist-hybrid view of women as mere data points,” Katie Heaney wrote for BuzzFeed News. “By viewing himself as a developer, and the women on OkCupid as subjects to be organized and ‘mined’, McKinlay places himself in a perceived greater place of power. Women are accessories he’s entitled to.” Regardless, McKinlay does seem to have ultimately profited from what was either a brilliant hack or a relic of the patriarchy. On his 88th OkCupid date, McKinlay met Christine Tien Wang who confessed to him that she, too, had manipulated parts of her online profile. “I spilled my guts,” McKinlay recalls. “I was like, ‘Oh I changed my profile too, in fact I wrote a whole bunch of natural language processing software to optimize it, and then I hacked all the match scores and I’ve been going on a date per day and I’m not sure what I’m looking for anymore but I think you might be cool. Is that, like, weird?'” Perhaps it was—but not too weird for Wang. One year later, the two OkCupid hackers were engaged, and they’re still together to this day. The truth about unwanted arousal | Emily Nagoski

Sex educator Emily Nagoski breaks down one of the most dangerous myths about sex and introduces us to the science behind arousal nonconcordance: when there's a disconnect between physical response and the experience of pleasure and desire. Talking about such intimate, private moments can feel awkward or difficult, yet in this straightforward talk Nagoski urges all of us to share this crucial information with someone -- judges, lawyers, partners, kids. "With every brave conversation we have, we make the world that little bit better," says Nagoski. (This talk contains mature content.) What happened when we tested thousands of abandoned rape kits in Detroit | Kym Worthy

19:06
In 2009, 11,341 untested rape kits -- some dating back to the 1980s -- were found in an abandoned warehouse once used by the Detroit police to store evidence. When this scandal was uncovered, prosecutor Kym Worthy set a plan into action to get justice for the thousands of victims affected. In this powerful, eye-opening talk, Worthy explains how her office helped develop an innovative program to track and test these kits -- and calls for a national effort to help solve the problem of stockpiled rape kits. Hacking Psychology to Measure the Mind | Joel Pearson | TEDxUNSW

13:50
Online dating, how many of us lie about our profiles to change the psychology of someone’s perception about us? Do we really say what we think? How do we measure one’s mind? Joel Pearson talks about the ways and techniques scientists and psychologists can hack into our brains. Through techniques such as visual illusions and emotional inception, we learn about how malleable our brains can be and the means in which we can measure it. Joel Pearson is a National Health and Medical Research Council fellow and Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at UNSW. He is also a psychologist, neuroscientist and public intellectual working at the forefront of science, innovation and agile science. Joel has come a long way from his early career in filmmaking at COFA. He is now director of the Pearson Lab, a multidisciplinary agile Cognitive Neuroscience research group. He is also the founder and director of the UNSW Science of Innovation Lab, a world-first, hands-on research lab studying the Psychology and Neuroscience of entrepreneurship and innovation. So great is his passion for high-risk discovery science that Joel has developed a method called Agile Science, a practical guide to practicing and reporting scientific discoveries – the ‘Lean Startup’ for the world of science. The lies we tell pregnant women | Sofia Jawed-Wessel

13:39
"When we tell women that sex isn't worth the risk during pregnancy, what we're telling her is that her sexual pleasure doesn't matter ... that she in fact doesn't matter," says sex researcher Sofia Jawed-Wessel. In this eye-opening talk, Jawed-Wessel mines our views about pregnancy and pleasure to lay bare the relationship between women, sex and systems of power. How Your Brain Is Getting Hacked: Facebook, Tinder, Slot Machines | Tristan Harris

05:43
Casinos, magicians, and the makers of social media platforms all know something about you: your mind is very vulnerable to influence. Just as the magician relies on limitations in your short term memory or visual acuity to accomplish sleight of hand, online software engineers leverage the limits of your mind to make their product addictive. From the sonorous ping of mobile phones to Facebook's highly nuanced algorithm, product makers understand that frequent reward is what keeps you coming back. And just like slot machines, the easier those rewards are to access, the more frequently we'll want them. Read more at BigThink.com Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink One thing we don't talk about is that—it's sort of hard to talk about this—our minds have theses kind of back doors. There's kind of—if you're human and you wake up and you open your eyes there is a certain set of dimensions to your experience that can be manipulated. When I was a kid I was a magician, and you learn all about these limits, that short-term memory is about this long and there's different reaction times, and if you ask people certain questions in certain ways you can control the answer. And this is just the structure of being human. To be human means that you are persuadable in every single moment. I mean the thing about magic, as an example, it’s that magic works on everybody, sleight of hand, right? It doesn't matter what language you speak, it doesn't matter how intelligent you are, it's not about what someone knows: it's about how your mind actually works. So knowing this, it turns out that there's this whole playbook of persuasive techniques that actually I learned when I was at the Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab and that most people in Silicon Valley in the tech industry learned as ways of getting your attention. So one example is: we are all vulnerable to social approval. We really care what other people think of us. So for example, when you upload a new profile photo of yourself on Facebook, that's a moment where our mind is very vulnerable to knowing, “what do other people think of my new profile photo?” And so when we get new likes on our profile photo, Facebook—knowing this—could actually message me and say, “oh, you have new likes on your profile photo.” And it knows that we'll be vulnerable to that moment because we all really care about when we're tagged in a photo or when we have a new profile photo. And the thing is that they control the dial, the technology companies control the dial for when and how long your profile photo shows up on other people's newsfeeds, so they can orchestrate it so that other people more often end up liking your profile photo over a delayed period of time, for example, so that you end up having to more frequently come back and see what the new likes are. And the problem is that they don't do this because they're evil, they do it because, again, they're in this race for our attention. And we should also ask, is that necessarily such a bad thing if they're orchestrating it so that other people like my photo? I mean that might feel good to me. So we have to have a new conversation about, as these technology companies use these techniques, these vulnerabilities in our minds, when is that actually aligned and good for us? When is that ethical? When is that honest? When is that fair? And when is that dishonest and unfair? Because they're actually manipulating our minds in a way that doesn't add up to our spending our time well on the screen. Well, so another vulnerability in our mind is something called a variable schedule reward, and that's like a slot machine in Las Vegas. It turns out that slot machines make more money in the United States than baseball, movies and theme parks combined. People become addicted to slot machines, I think it's two to three times faster than any other kind of gambling in a casino. So it's insane. And why is that? Because it's very simple: you just pull a lever, and sometimes you get a reward and sometimes you don't. And the more random it is and the more variable it is the more addictive it becomes. And the thing is, that that turns our phone into a slot machine, because every time we check our phone we're playing the slot machine to see “what did I get?” Every time that we check our email, we're playing the slot machine to see, “What did I get? Did I get invited to an interview at Big Think or did I just get another newsletter?” Or if you're on a dating site like Tindr and when you're swiping, each swipe is: you're playing the slot machine to see “did I get a match?”, I'm playing the slot machine to see, “did I get a match?” And the problem is that this dynamic, these variable schedule rewards or this slot machine mechanic, is so powerful that it's the best thing at addicting people and putting you in the zone.

What your smart devices know (and share) about you | Kashmir Hill and Surya Mattu

09:06
Once your smart devices can talk to you, who else are they talking to? Kashmir Hill and Surya Mattu wanted to find out -- so they outfitted Hill's apartment with 18 different internet-connected devices and built a special router to track how often they contacted their servers and see what they were reporting back. The results were surprising -- and more than a little bit creepy. Learn more about what the data from your smart devices reveals about your sleep schedule, TV binges and even your tooth-brushing habits -- and how tech companies could use it to target and profile you. Understanding PTSD's Effects on Brain, Body, and Emotions | Janet Seahorn | TEDxCSU

15:59
PTSD disrupts the lives of average individuals as well as combat veterans who have served their country. The person experiencing the trauma often then impacts the lives of his/her family, friends, and workplaces. PTSD does not distinguish between race, age or gender and often goes undiagnosed. Even with proper diagnosis, many individuals do not know where to turn to get help. Society needs to understand the aftermath of trauma especially combat trauma and how to prepare for warriors when they return home. Janet Seahorn, Ph.D has been a teacher, administrator, and consultant for over thirty years. She currently teaches a variety of classes on neuroscience and literacy as an adjunct professor for Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. Jan has a Ph.D in Human Development and Organizational Systems. Her background includes an in-depth understanding of human development and neuroscience research as well as effective practices in organizational systems and change. She conducts workshops on the neuroscience of learning and memory, the effects of “at-risk” environments (i.e., poverty), brain development, and researched-based instructional practices. Jan has worked with many organizations in the business and educational communities in creating and sustaining healthy, dynamic environments. Dr. Seahorn has researched and studied the effects of trauma on the brain and how excessive or extreme trauma can impact changes in the brain’s neuro network and how that change impacts behaviors in s This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. The True Gifts of a Dyslexic Mind | Dean Bragonier | TEDxMarthasVineyard

16:52
In this inspiring talk, advocate and educator Dean Bragonier offers a different take on Dyslexia. By looking at the unique mindset of Dyslexics as a strength, Dean reframes a perceived weakness as a powerful tool and teaches us all an important lesson about the power of an open mind and an open heart. Dean Bragonier is a social entrepreneur in the EdTech space. Shaped by the challenges associated with his dyslexia, Dean became an advocate for learning and disability equality and has founded, managed and served on the boards of organizations working to create systemic change in this field. As the Founder and Executive Dyslexic of NoticeAbility Inc., Dean leads a collaborative team from Harvard University, Tufts University and the Carroll School that is building curricula designed to offer authentic inquiry experiences in vocational subjects that cater to the neurological strengths of the dyslexic mind. Upon graduation, Dean embraced his entrepreneurial instincts and acquired a small seasonal restaurant on Martha's Vineyard Island that he transformed into a successful full-scale enterprise (see Boston Magazine, July 2001). It was through this endeavor that he was able to contextualize his years of laborious academic learning and discover the true gifts of his dyslexic mind. The symbols of systemic racism — and how to take away their power | Paul Rucker

07:02
Multidisciplinary artist and TED Fellow Paul Rucker is unstitching the legacy of systemic racism in the United States. A collector of artifacts connected to the history of slavery -- from branding irons and shackles to postcards depicting lynchings -- Rucker couldn't find an undamaged Ku Klux Klan robe for his collection, so he began making his own. The result: striking garments in non-traditional fabrics like kente cloth, camouflage and silk that confront the normalization of systemic racism in the US. "If we as a people collectively look at these objects and realize that they are part of our history, we can find a way to where they have no more power over us," Rucker says. Play CTF! A Great Way to Learn Hacking - Fsec 2017

33:51
Abstract: For many of us hacking means creativity - if you have ever witnessed a complex heap memory corruption exploit, you realise how close this is to art. But when we look at how IT security is taught, we often see uncreative memorisation of dangerous functions or generally a checklist approach. Nobody can understand or know everything in IT Security and isolation of topics only leads to interesting attack ideas being lost at the topic boundaries. Like in math we rather like to develop an intuition and understanding of underlying concepts that help us to adapt to any system we want to hack. Especially because the IT world is changing extremely fast and staying up-to-date is necessary. I believe, for anybody who is interested in IT security, as well as developers who should write secure code, it’s important to train hacking creatively. CTF (Capture The Flag) challenges are kind of like math puzzles for hackers - sometimes they are about exploiting basic issues and sometimes they are very esoteric. But they always require creative thinking. Security trainings, academic education and books will get you far enough to deliver good work, but I believe playing CTFs can make the difference between good or excellent work. With this talk I want to motivate you to play CTFs and showcase various example challenge solutions, to show you stuff you hopefully haven't seen before and get you inspired to find more interesting vulnerabilities.
