I was going to sand everything down and throw on a new coat of stain, however I decided to go ahead and update the look of the doors while I was at it. Instead of raised panel, I wanted to build shaker style faces instead. I built new drawers since the old ones were pretty worn out and I also turned the faux faces in front of the sink into functioning tip out drawers. I used 3/4" oak for the rails and stiles and 1/4" oak plywood for the panels. The doors are made with tongue and groove joints.

Kitchen Makeover - Make New Shaker Cabinet Doors // DIY

Use baltic birch plywood to give your kitchen a modern shaker-style makeover. I used 1/2" Baltic birch plywood for the cabinet doors, and used 1/4" baltic birch plywood to create a 2" frame around the perimeter of the door. To finish them, I applied an ebony stain, then 4 coats of satin wipe-on polyurethane.

To Groove or not to Groove Shaker Doors

02:41
You have probably heard of a shaker door and that there are a few options when it comes to style, but what is the difference? In this video Neil talks us through the groove's and why they are there plus whether they are for you or not. Call us on 01484 435 900 to let us help you get the right kitchen for you and your home. http://www.milliganandjessop.com/ Channel administered by http://clockworkeye.co.uk/ Transcript: It's a replica of an original Shaker door. The main problem with the original Shaker door was that it would suffer with hairline cracks through the hot and cold weather causing contraction and expansion. So in this door it's still got the original five piece Shaker format but it has a wood veneer centre panel but in this case it has been painted as a painted door and because it's wood veneer on an MDF base that helps when the frame around expands and contracts to not actually push the joints so it manages to stay in shape a lot longer. Unfortunately some of the doors do stuffer with hairline cracks. There are a couple of options we can do with this, let me show you. This is also a true Shaker door, this is an in frame version, but this is done with a tulip wood. Now the problem with tulip wood is that it's a plain door and when you actually paint the door the cracks don't disappear in the grain, the cracks are very very visible as you can see there is four on this particular door. Now there is a solution to this but this again comes back to being a replica. And that would involve using MDF as a product for the whole door and by having an MDF door and painting it you never get the hairline cracks which means that it keeps its beauty for a lot longer. But that only works if it is going to be a plain painted door. If you go back to the original door it was with a wood grain and painted or varnished. If you want to do that and you don't want to ever suffer from hairline cracks the solution is to have a groove. The groove is an addition, we have four of them that run with the vertical styles. By doing that the door can contract to expand and ultimately any hairline cracks will disappear down the groove so you will never have any issues. So that is the question, original formal beauty or a groove for functionality. For more invaluable tips about kitchens and kitchen design please pop in for coffee at the show room. Give us a ring or have a look at the videos.

How to Make Professional Grade Flat Panel Cabinet Doors

43:19
Learn how to make professional grade Flat Panel Cabinet Doors for stronger, better looking stain-grade doors by using real wood instead of mdf or plywood. This video shows the process for using solid wood and classic 'tongue and groove joinery' to build a pair of 'rustic alder' kitchen cabinet doors using standard shop equipment. It goes 'deep in the weeds' to cover material selection, sizing, milling for frame components and glue up of large 'thin' flat panels followed by setup and cutting of dados and tenons for the joinery on a tablesaw. This long-format video is produced to be more 'master class with a carpenter' than 'Saturday afternoon entertainment on HGTV' so I hope viewers will appreciate it as such. The S.I.U. list (Stuff I Use) for this video is here on the Next Level Carpentry Amazon Influencer's page: http://a.co/2zUNBp3 Here's a more inclusive S.I.U. collection from the Next Level Carpentry shop: https://www.amazon.com/shop/nextlevelcarpentry It's no surprise that these are affiliate links which means I may earn a small fee if you buy something using one of them, so if you do, thanks!

Shaker cabinet doors (start to finish)

04:39
In this video I show how shaker cabinet doors are made from start to finish, though this is more of a demonstration, and not necessarily a how to video. I'm thinking of starting a Patreon page to make videos like this that include more details, and will be more instructional. These doors were made for a client that has existing douglas fir trim and mouldings all over their house, and they wanted to maintain that theme. I personally did not enjoy working with the wood, as I find it to be extremely delicate, and I had gained about 100 splinters by the time I was done, ha. DIY Kitchen Renovation -- I Make My Own Cabinets!

09:30
Watch as my wife and I renovate our kitchen on a budget. I made our upper cabinets and made all new doors for the lowers. We went from a dark stained wood looks to a light and airy white shaker style. And man did it look different! This is not a how-to video, but more of us documenting the process. Some FAQs: 1. The cabinet boxes are 3/4 birch plywood. 2. The backing of each cabinet is 1/4 birch plywood. 3. No, I did not house the cabinet backing in a groove like the professionals do--they are cut to fit just right inside the cabinet. 4. Yes, I did make sure to put furring strips on the top and bottom, behind the cabinet backing. 5. The doors are made of poplar tongue and groove style joints, with a 1/4 birch plywood floating panel insert. 6. The tools I used are: Skil 10" table saw borrowed from my sister. Skilsaw 10" mitre saw that I got off craigslist. Skil 7 1/4" circular saw. Skil jigsaw. $40 kreg pocket hole jig. Dewalt 20v drill I borrowed from the same sister. Titebond II glue. Clamps from Harbor Freight. 7. We installed a white quartz countertop. 8. Why did we contract out the paint? Because I tried to do it myself, and hit some hiccups. The finish is absolutely critical in making this look great vs. good or ok or hodge podge. So we decided to spend the extra to have professionals do it right. I think it was the right decision because the result is stunning. Nevertheless, there are some small flaws that I notice (and no one else does)--I don't think anyone is exacting in their standards as the person who is making the project. 9. So had you never done cabinets before? No. But I watched a lot of videos. I'm pretty handy. I read articles and referenced other texts. Then, I had an extra cabinet or two that we had removed when we took down a wall previously when we first moved in. I studied that, deconstructed/reverse engineered the construction. In the end, I realized that I could indeed do this myself, and that I could do it with standard tools if I planned and executed well enough. 10. Would I recommend you do this? No. I don't recommend it. Only if you have very limited, specific needs like I did. We only wanted a pantry and new uppers. The lowers were perfect, just a color we didn't like. By not making the lowers, we saved a TON of money. Also, it was a very LONG process that strained me and my family quite a bit as I was working on the kitchen for a month straight, and my wife had to watch our child basically alone during that time. 11. Would I explain or teach how I did it? Not really. If you have a specific question, ask! I'll answer. As far as a how-to or tutorial, I'm not the right person for that. There are much better how-to videos for cabinet making out there. 12. Will I do my own kitchen if I get a new house? Probably not. I don't think the cost-benefit ratio is high enough in most cases. 13.... I'll keep adding here. Thanks, Andrew

Alder Shaker Style Cabinet Doors.wmv

01:40
http://www.AcmeCabinetDoors.com Here we have our Alder Shaker Style custom cabinet door. Alder wood is straight grained and even textured. Pale yellow to reddish brown with indistinct boundaries between heartwood and softwood. Alder is an excellent choice for staining, as it will take a clear coat, or a light to dark stain very well. Alder has also been used quite commonly to mimic the look of cherry if stained and finished properly. Since alder is a straight smooth grain wood it also takes painted finishes very well. Shown here is just one style of Shaker style cabinet doors that we offer. The Shaker style is named after the Shakers. The Shakers built very beautiful yet very simple utilitarian furniture And this is a style has been modeled and refined from their designs over the years. This version of this Shaker style door has a very modern feel clean but not ornate. This style of shaker door features 2 1/4 wide stiles and rails. Other stile and rail widths can be produced using this style of cabinet door. Shaker style cabinet doors offer a clean yet traditional look. Shaker style cabinet doors are very popular and work well with a variety of designs and home decor. This style of cabinet door can be built in virtually any size and matching drawer fronts are also available. If you would like more information on shaker style cabinet doors, or any other custom cabinet doors please feel free to visit AcmeCabinetDoors.com There you more information on custom cabinet doors as well as a quote request form where you can fill in the sizes and quantities of the doors you require for a free quote.
