TEDxOakville - Judy Thompson - Three Secrets You Need to Know About Spoken English
Judy Thompson, B.A., TESL Certification, professor, author and speaker is an expert in spoken English. A student herself of French and German, Judy knows firsthand the frustrations of learning to speak a new language. Judy lived and taught in South Korea and it was there that she had the first of many revelations about spoken English and how it should be taught. Newcomers are embarrassed about their accents and grammar mistakes and native speakers are unaware that the way they speak makes it extremely difficult for non-native speakers to understand them. Judy leads language classes for both native and non-native speakers to foster understanding and effective communication in our diverse community. A long time resident of Caledon, Ontario, Judy has four children and lives with her husband Richard on a beautiful ten-acre hobby farm. She is an environmental activist who enjoys hiking and skiing. In her spare time, she raises champion hunter show ponies.

Parallelism: The secret to great writing
Parallelism or parallel structure is one of the secrets of great writing. It gives greater balance and power to the way you communicate. It will help you get higher grades, improve your job prospects, and look more professional. In this lesson, I explain all about parallelism -- what it is and how to use it correctly. This easy but important lesson will take your English to a higher level. Follow up by watching my lesson on the Magic of 3 to strengthen your English even more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FcAub-xqGQ&index=94&list=PLxSz4mPLHWDZgp8e6i0oyXOOrTAAaj0O7&t=0s Take the quiz on this lesson here: https://www.engvid.com/parallelism-great-writing/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. I'm Rebecca from engVid. This lesson is for you if you want to learn how to communicate more powerfully in just a short time. This lesson is about something called: "Parallelism" or "Parallel Structure". Now, in case you've never heard of it, or if you've heard of it but you're not sure what it is, I just want to tell you that it's something really important, especially in academic circles or in the business world. All right? And also socially. So, whether you're speaking, or whether you're writing, this principle of parallelism will help you to communicate more effectively. So, first of all, what is parallelism? So, it's a speaking or writing technique in which you communicate more powerfully by balancing different parts of your sentence, and I'm going to show you lots of examples so you understand exactly. So, when we create a sentence that has parallel structure, it means that when we have a list of items in our sentence, all of the forms of speech should be the same. For example, you have verbs, verbs, verbs; nouns and nouns; adjectives and adjectives; adverbs and adverbs. Now, that seems obvious, but in real life when people speak and write, they don't always do that. So I'm going to show you: "What are the benefits of using parallelism?" and also exactly how to use them in a sentence. So, some of the benefits that you will get when you start creating sentences with parallel structure are that your sentences will have more weight, they'll be more balanced, they'll have more rhythm to them, they'll have more style, more clarity (they'll be more clear), and also you'll be able to emphasize things more. And as a result of all that, your speaking or your writing will be much more dramatic and much more powerful. And you may not realize why, but it's really important that this parallel structure exists. Now, in addition, it's not just something to make it better, it's not just something to improve your communication. In academic circles, if you don't follow these parallel structure rules, it's actually considered a mistake in writing; it's considered very weak writing, bad writing, poor writing, and you will get lower grades as a result of that. Okay? So it's really important, especially if you're in the academic world or writing anything serious or in the business world, to write this way. Let's look at some simple examples first. Okay? So, this sentence, the first one: "Janet sings and dances." So here, what do we see? We see verbs and verbs: "Janet sings and dances." If somebody didn't write this sentence properly, they might write: "Janet sings and is dancing." Now, here it didn't match because this was present simple, so this should be a verb in the present simple; they should both be verbs, they should both be in the same tense, and so on. Okay? Let's look at more examples. "We enjoy reading and cooking." Here we have two gerunds: "reading", "cooking". Next: "I like to watch movies and to travel abroad." Okay? Now, you see how that seems really balanced? Okay? So we have: "to watch movies", so we have an infinitive and a noun, and "to travel abroad". "To travel", infinitive and a... Well, it's not a noun, but it's like a noun, it functions like a noun. Next: "The reasons for my view are political, cultural, and social." So here we have three adjectives. Now, up til now we had two, now we have three. And if you've watched my earlier lesson on: "The Power of Three" or "The Magic of Three", you will know that this is really special. This is like parallelism on steroids. This is like the best kind of writing you can do, and a lot of very famous leaders and writers write this way, using parallelism in threes to make things much more effective. So, if you haven't watched that other lesson, I will tell you where you can get it; it's called: "The Magic of Three" on our website. So: "The reasons for my view are political, cultural, and social." Three adjectives. "The police acted quickly and carefully." Okay? So we have here: "quickly", "carefully", two adverbs. And last: "We enjoy comedies, dramas, and documentaries." So you have here three nouns. Right? So that's what's important: nouns with nouns, adverbs with adverbs, adjectives with adjectives - you get the idea. Okay? Now, if you get the idea, work with me, stay with me. […]

Acting secrets for a strong, dynamic voice
Speak with a great voice by doing these exercises that actors use. Speak with a strong, expressive voice by warming up and tuning your body like an instrument. How you express yourself physically is just as important as the words you use. In this video, I will teach you acting techniques to prepare your body and your voice for speaking. You need to learn to get into your body and really feel it, and these exercises will help you to do exactly that. When you really feel your body, you can use it to make energetic and charismatic sound. Some of these exercises might look a little weird to you... who cares? It feels good, and it works -- that's what's important. We will be going through warm up exercises and voice preparation drills to get you ready to look and sound your best. Whether you have a presentation coming up, you want to improve your sales, or you simply want to improve your conversational skills, this video is for you. WATCH NEXT: 1. MOUTH EXERCISES FOR CLEAR SPEECH: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp2VvmUJJc8 2. SPEAK AS CLEARLY AS AN ACTOR: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQNMCgKvOk0 QUIZ: https://www.engvid.com/acting-secrets-for-a-strong-dynamic-voice/ TRANSCRIPT Enter from stage left. On the stage, that is the left. It's from the actor's point of view. That's my left, that is my right. This is downstage, because traditionally you would be going down the stage and that is upstage, so I just appeared from stage left. Benjamin, what are you talking about? Get to the point. Hello. Welcome back to engVid. This is a lesson to help you get your voice from your body. That's right, your body is an instrument like a violin, so we need to get the body ready to produce sound, just as you would warm up to play an instrument. How do we do that? Well, I picked up a few tips from my time as an actor, I'm going to be sharing some of these with you now. The main thing is you've got to be physical, you've got to be really in your body, you've got to be present to it, you've got to know how your body feels for good sound to come out. Okay. So, I'm just going to talk you through how I would get ready if I was about to go on stage. This isn't something you're going to do on a tube on an underground metro line, but if you're getting ready to do a presentation in a hotel, staying somewhere, and you've got some time to kill, then play around, do something like what I'm going to be doing now. So, I'm going to be doing some yoga poses, so that's why I'm going to take my shoes and socks off. No, I'm not a yoga teacher, although I have taught children yoga before, which was a good chat-up line when I met my wife; she thought that was good. So, okay. So I'm just going to start by just going, jump like that. Huh, huh. Ruh. Ahhh. Awh. Shaking out a bit, getting my arms around a bit. Ah. And I'm going to go straight into a famous method acting vocal warmup. So, this is about getting tension out of your body, and as I've just messed my mobile phone, I've got quite a lot of tension in me right now, so it should be good. Okay, so I'm sat down. Okay. And we're starting from the head down to the feet. Okay? So, what you're doing is you're making circular movements. You have to close your eyes. And where you feel a little bit tense, you release the tension with a: "Hah!" Okay? So I'm... Just watch, and we'll talk about it in a sec. Ahhhhhh. Hah. Hah. Hah. Ahhhhhh. What I'm trying to do is... You're just feeling where you want to move, so you can roll your head, you can roll your shoulders, you can roll your middle, your groin, you can roll your legs, you can stretch out here, you can stamp, you can really get into your body. Ahhhh. Hah. Hah. Hah. Ahhhhh. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh... Hah. Hah. Hah. Ahhhhhhhh. Hah. Hah. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. Hah. Ahhhhhhhh. Hah. Now, I'm not going to, sort of, be totally self-indulgent. You should do this for about 20 minutes. People do it from 20 minutes anyway up to an hour, and you will feel your voice change after you do the exercise for longer and longer. I'd love to carry on doing it now, but you might just sit there, going: "Uh, Benjamin, you okay?" Okay? So that is an exercise to do over a space of time. Shut the door, turn your phone off, or just smash it like me, and you won't be interrupted. Okay. Next we're going to do a bit of yoga, so don't know if you know a sun salutation, hello to the sun. Okay? You probably do. You can probably do it better than me. Hands together like this, like they're in prayer, okay? And then we're going to go up, and then down. Okay? So... Probably doing in totally the wrong order, but there we are. And now we're sort of going down, we're going up, and then we're going to Downward Dog. My 18-month old baby can do this, so you can, too. That foot up, that foot up. Ah. Wah. Ah. So you do it on the right, now you do it on the left. Ah. Ah. Ah. Ah. So, one set is when you go with your right and then your left. […]

NO 🌏Where are you from? Tel-Aviv, Israel (I speak Hebrew) ❓ How did you lose your accent? I learned acting in NYC and acquired an American Accent. So I never really lost anything. I also talk about it here: https://goo.gl/PShZ9s 🤔 How can I sound more like a native speaker? You don't have to. A foreign accent is not a bad thing. It's part of your identity. Of who you are. Your goal should be to sound clear, to have an impact when you speak, and to feel confident in your English voice so you never let your English hold you back or prevent you from achieving your goals. #CommunicationOverPerfection 😩What's the worst thing about traditional English training? It's taught as if everyone has the name needs. And it's mostly boring. 🇺🇸Do native speakers think you are American? At first. But later in the conversation, they may detect a subtle accent. Depends on what I'm talking about and how tired I am. I don't care about it too much though, I'm a proud non-native speaker ✊ 🇮🇱🇵🇸What do you think about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? I think land is not worth dying or fighting for. I will always promote peace and co-existence. And for me communication in English is a way to overcome political and cultural barriers. 🎓Do you teach 1:1? I don't. I have an amazing colleague, Natalie, who teaches 1:1 at my school and online using my methods. I also have an online program called Accent Makeover that runs 2-3 times a year. It's important to improve your pronunciation and fluency so you feel more confident and capable. So YOU can express yourself better, and minimize the gap between your native tongue and your English. And If someone makes fun or judges you because of your accent, simply ask back: Oh, and how many languages do YOU speak?! 😏 People who only speak one language don't always understand what it means to overcome the challenges of speaking a foreign language. 10 Teenage Secrets teenagers will never tell you. - Free Spoken English Lesson
10 Teenage Secrets teenagers will never tell you. - Free Spoken English Lesson It's always been tough to be a teenager. For today's teens, it's even tougher. Social media has teens living their lives out online for everyone to see -- friends and family as well as their enemies and bullies. All too often, when problems arise, teens hold everything inside instead of reaching out for help. They think no one could possibly understand what they are going through. They feel alone, isolated and sometimes abandoned. They feel like they have no one they can talk to when they regret making the wrong decision or do the wrong thing. In this lesson Ceema brings you some of the teenage secrets. 1. Unauthorized usage of vehicles. They drive Dad’s motorbike or car without his approval. When they meet with a minor accident and the vehicle gets damaged, They just say "I found it lying like that in a parking lot". 2. Hiding real ambitions There’s so much pressure on the teenagers to become engineers or doctors. They want to become an air-hostess or an athlete, but find it tough to discuss it with my parents. 3. Watching porn films Teenagers often watch porn films at their friends’ places or flip through adult magazines when their parents are not home. A lot of porn is also available on the Internet and some of the teenagers download short clips onto their mobiles. 4. Not revealing fights sometimes teenagers fight with their friends, but there’s mutual understanding that they won’t let their parents know. And, usually, they sort out the differences themselves. 5. Practicing bad hygiene To avoid bathing during the winter. They just go into the bathroom, wet their feet, face and hair, spray some deodorant and exclaim how cold the water was! 6. Keeping financial secrets Some of the teenagers have taken up part-time jobs to meet their expenses, but they don’t tell their parents about it so that their pocket money is not reduced. 7. Memorizing phone numbers They memorize the phone numbers of their friends whom their parents do not approve of so that their names don’t blink on their mobile phone. 8. Drug / Alcohol. Sexual abuse Some of them get stuck with friends from whom they learn to smoke, drink, splurge, and other vices. They get entangled with a group and become addicted to the abuses. 9. Damaging property while playing football or any other indoor games with their siblings, they break things for example, a flowerpot. They throw the broken pieces into a vacant, adjacent plot without my parents knowing. 10. Cheating on studies Homework is often a team effort. They divide homework between friends so it becomes easier to finish it on time. At times, they also convince one of the studious fellows of their class to part with his homework and then copy it.
