Power Of INDIAN NAVY - Deadliest Sea Warriors
The Indian Navy is the naval branch of the Indian Armed Forces. The President of India serves as Supreme Commander of the Indian Navy. The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), usually a four-star officer in the rank of Admiral, commands the navy. The Indian Navy is the fifth largest in the world. It played an important role in India's victory in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. The Indian Navy can trace its lineage back to the East India Company's Marine which was founded in 1612 to protect British merchant shipping in the region. In 1793 the East India Company established its rule over eastern part of the Indian subcontinent i.e. Bengal, but it wasn't until 1830 that the colonial navy became known as Her Majesty's Indian Navy. In 1858, East India Company rule gave way to the British Raj which lasted until India became independent in 1947. When India became a republic in 1950, the Royal Indian Navy as it had been named since 1934 was renamed to Indian Navy. The 17th-century Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is considered as the 'Father of the Indian Navy'. The primary objective of the navy is to secure the nation's maritime borders; India also uses its navy to enhance its international relations through joint exercises, port visits and humanitarian missions, including disaster relief. In recent years, the Indian Navy has undergone rapid modernisation to replace its ageing equipment currently in service, this is often seen as part of "India's drive" to develop blue-water capabilities and enhance its position in the Indian Ocean region. As of 2016, the Indian Navy has a strength of 79,023 personnel and a large operational fleet consisting of two aircraft carriers, one amphibious transport dock, 9 landing ship tanks, 10 destroyers, 14 frigates, one nuclear-powered attack submarine, 14 conventionally-powered attack submarines, 24 corvettes, 6 mine countermeasure vessels, 27 patrol vessels, 4 fleet tankers and various other auxiliary vessels. Chinese Ice-class Cargo Ship Arrives at French Port
After a 33-day voyage, Chinese ice-class cargo ship Tian En, designated to transport cargo via the northeastern shipping route of the Polar Silk Road, arrived Thursday at Rouen port, France, where part of the cargo will be unloaded. In January 2018, China outlined its ambitions to extend the Belt and Road Initiative to the Arctic by developing Arctic shipping routes that would form a "Polar Silk Road". Under the guidance of French pilots, the cargo ship sailed into River Seine at 16:00 local time on Wednesday, and anchored at Rouen Port two hours later. Tian En, the first ice-class cargo ship developed by China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited, departed from Lianyungang Port in east China's Jiangsu Province on Aug 4. The ship sailed through the Yellow Sea, the Sea of Japan, the Okhotsk Sea, the Chukchi Sea, the Siberian Sea, the Laptev Sea, the Kara Sea, the Barents Sea and the North Sea in Europe, and finally arrived at the port in Europe. The voyage of Tian En covered more than 18,500 kilometers and lasted more than 30 days. The vessel is fully loaded with wind power generation equipment of 37,000 cubic meters imported by European countries including France, the Netherlands and Sweden. On many occasions of the voyage, the ship was besieged by large amounts of floating ice in the Arctic Ocean, and the speed of the ship once slowed down to less than 1km per hour. It also experienced challenges from icebergs, dense fogs and strong winds. The waterjet has many advantages over a propeller. The very high efficiency of the Kamewa waterjet pumps offer higher speeds for the same power or substantially lower fuel consumption at a constant speed with less power. Waterjets also give the engine an easier life. At constant rpm the waterjets absorb approximately the same power regardless of the vessel’s speed, so the engine cannot be overloaded, giving it a longer lifetime. Typically, waterjets produce less vibration and noise, improving passenger comfort levels. At speeds over 20 knots noise and vibration can be reduced by more than 50%. Waterjets for naval applications can be built for special requirements regarding signature, shock and other higher requirements. Wärtsilä successfully tests remote control ship operating capability | Wärtsilä
The technology group Wärtsilä has taken a further important step towards developing its Smart Marine capabilities by successfully testing the remote control of ship operations. The testing, which involved driving the vessel through a sequence of maneuvers using a combination of Dynamic Positioning (DP) and manual joystick control, was carried out on August 21 off the North Sea coast of Scotland in collaboration with Gulfmark Offshore, the U.S. based operator who provided the vessel for the project. Although the test vessel was in the North Sea, the remote control navigating was carried out from the Wärtsilä office located in San Diego, California, 8000 km (5000 miles) away. ADVANCED STEALTH US Navy LCS2 littoral combat ship
A great video of the US Navy LCS2 littoral combat ship this new ship incorporates stealth shaping and other new technologies. USS Independence (LCS-2) is the lead ship of the Independence-class littoral combat ship. She is the sixth ship of the United States Navy to be named for the concept of independence. The design was produced by the General Dynamics consortium for the Navy's LCS program, and competes with the Lockheed Martin-designed Freedom variant.[10] Independence, delivered to the Navy at the end of 2009, is a high-speed, small-crew corvette (although the U.S. Navy does not use the term) intended for operation in the littoral zone. She can swap out various systems to take on various missions, including finding and destroying mines, hunting submarines in and near shallow water, and fighting small boats (she is not intended to fight warships). The ship is a trimaran design with a wide beam above the waterline that supports a larger flight deck than those of the Navy's much larger destroyers and cruisers, as well as a large hangar and a similarly large mission bay below. The trimaran hull also exhibits low hydrodynamic drag, allowing efficient operation on two diesel-powered water jets at speeds up to 18 knots (33 km/h; 21 mph), and high-speed operation on two gas turbine-powered water jets at a sustainable 44 knots (81 km/h; 51 mph) and even faster for short periods. The trimaran hull will allow flight operations up to sea state 5.[11] Independence carries a default armament for self-defense, and command and control. Modules may consist of manned aircraft, unmanned vehicles, off-board sensors, or mission-manning detachments. The interior volume and payload is greater than some destroyers, allowing the ship to serve as a high-speed transport and maneuver platform. The 15,200 square feet (1,410 m2) mission bay takes up most of the deck below the hangar and flight deck. In addition to cargo or container-sized mission modules, the bay can carry four lanes of multiple Strykers, armored Humvees, and their associated troops. An elevator allows air transport of packages the size of a 20-foot-long (6.1 m) shipping container that can be moved into the mission bay while at sea. A side access ramp allows for vehicle roll-on/roll-off loading to a dock and allows the ship to transport the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle.[12] Bunks and living spaces are below the bridge. The helm is controlled by joysticks instead of traditional steering wheels.[13] Independence also has an integrated LOS Mast, Sea Giraffe 3D radar and SeaStar Safire FLIR.

The Strongest Multipurpose Ice Breaking Vessel - Umiak I
Umiak I is a purpose-built ice-strengthened bulk carrier constructed for the Voisey's Bay Nickel Company,[3] a wholly owned subsidiary of Vale Inco, to transport ore from the Voisey's Bay Mine. According to an article in the April 2006 issue of The Gossan an internal publication of the Voisey's Bay Nickel Company, the Umiak had completed her sea trials in Japan, and her delivery was expected in May 2006. “Umiak is the Inuktitut name for a supply boat or sometimes called a woman’s boat, and is a fitting name for a vessel carrying concentrate from Voisey’s Bay”.[4] Umiak I makes twelve trips per year, transporting a total of 360,000 tonnes of nickel concentrate, worth $1.5 billion CAD. Fednav also operates a similar ice-strengthened bulk carrier, Arctic, which shares the load with Umiak I. On 30 October 2012, Fednav announced it had ordered a third icebreaking cargo vessel from Universal Shipbuilding Corporation's Tsu shipyard in Japan. THE PAKISTAN NAVY’S CORVETTE OPTIONS Foreword: This is not a news story, but a piece for discussion. The details offered in this article are not authoritative pieces of information, but rather, perspectives of the author. The Pakistan Navy asserts that it is pursuing new surface warships to supplant its legacy systems, such as the Type 21/Tariq-class frigates, and to bolster its fleet. In wartime, the Pakistan Navy’s core mission is to deny India access to Pakistan’s littoral waters and to protect coastal economic assets, such as the Gwadar deep-sea port. This anti-access and area-denial (A2/AD) mission would mostly be done by the Navy’s air-independent propulsion (AIP)-powered submarines, coastal anti-ship missile (AShM) batteries, fast attack crafts (FAC) and aviation assets, both from the Navy and the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). However, there is a sense that the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and the resulting (or hoped) increase in sea trade between Pakistan and the Arabian Peninsula, would warrant the need for surface ships to police Pakistan’s sea-lines-of-communication (SLOC) and exclusive economic zone (EEZ). For these to be relevant in wartime, Pakistan would need to revitalize its merchant navy, which is comprised of only 10 ships. The Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) would need to be much larger, and ideally, backed by a cadre of privately owned Pakistani shipping companies, to make the cost of guaranteeing wartime trade worthwhile for the Pakistani economy. In the absence of a merchant navy resurgence, the Pakistan Navy’s surface combatants will likely support the A2/AD mission in wartime conditions. Pakistan is also bound by the reality of limited fiscal means. For the foreseeable future, these factors will guide Pakistan to pursue lower cost surface warship designs. It is negotiating with Turkey for four MILGEM Ada corvettes, but details regarding its configuration are not yet known, though one could expect Pakistan to retain its anti-ship warfare (AShW) and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. Ideally, the Pakistan Navy would also work with its Turkish contractor, Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik A.Ş. (STM), to incorporate vertical-launch system (VLS) cells for medium-range surface-to-air missiles (SAM). Interestingly, Delta Marine has an alternate design (i.e. LF-2400 Light Frigate) that seems to be a variant of the MILGEM, but with a revised bridge design that seems to offer ample room for VLS cells.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) regulates and licenses port and marine services and facilities. It also manages vessel traffic in the Singapore port while ensuring safety and security. The port section contains information, guidelines and procedures on matters relating to the port and its operations. The shipping section covers information on how to register a ship under the Singapore flag,as well as manning guidelines, procedures and requirements for owners and masters of Singapore-registered ships. MPA also posts circulars and notices to update the port and shipping community. Also important to the communities are information on port, shipping and other MPA tariffs. Available for download and reference is the maritime legislation of Singapore. As an active member of the international maritime community, MPA posts updates on IMO matters. Finally, we have information for seafarers of all nationalities, whether based in Singapore or visiting from overseas. At the crossroads of seaborne trade, Singapore’s interconnectivity makes it the preferred port of call for more than 130,000 vessels totalling some 1.5 billion gross tons. Maine Maritime Academy - Training Ship State of Maine departed May 5, 2018. We had the privilege to be able to film the experience for those who may of missed it. Make sure to check us out on facebook at www.facebook.com/downeastcowboy USNS Tanner (T-AGS-40), was built for the United States Navy as a fast oceanographic research vessel by Bethlehem Steel Corporation at its Sparrows Point Yard in Maryland in 1990. The vessel was the second oceanographic research ship to bear the name of Zera Luther Tanner, a noted oceanographer and inventor of a patented sounding machine. The vessel experienced catastrophic engine failure in 1993 and was laid up by the Navy and eventually transferred ownership to the Maritime Administration (MARAD). The ship lay idle in the James River Reserve Fleet until 1996 when she began a conversion process, which removed her underwater sonar domes and equipment. The two original engines were removed and a new power plant was installed. The newer engine is significantly less powerful than the old engines. The sister ship, Maury (T-AGS-39), now the third vessel of the name TS Golden Bear, retained the original and more powerful enterprise engines. The vessel was modified to increase the accommodations from 108 to 302 persons. New lifesaving equipment and upgrades to existing equipment were accomplished as well as enhancements to the habitability requirements of the vessel. She was delivered to Maine Maritime Academy on 6 June 1997 and sailed her maiden training cruise the following week. State of Maine was called into active duty by the Maritime Administration (MARAD) following Hurricane Katrina and provided living quarters for oil rig workers, who were working to repair damaged rigs, and for Federal Law Enforcement Officers assisting in New Orleans. The ship is normally docked at her pier in Castine when not on a training cruise or in drydock. State of Maine is classed with the American Bureau of Shipping, and all inspections of her hull and equipment are undertaken by this classification society. The ship entered drydock for scheduled maintenance and inspections following the summer cruise of 2007. She also entered drydock following the Summer Cruise of 2012, keeping within the inspection schedule required by US Coast Guard Regulations. Most recently, she entered drydock at the conclusion of her 2017 summer cruise. It was located near the present-day Beaver Valley Nuclear Generating Station on the Ohio River in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, USA, about 25 miles (40 km) from Pittsburgh. The reactor reached criticality on December 2, 1957, and remained in operation until October 1982. The first electrical power was produced on December 18, 1957 as engineers synchronized the plant with the distribution grid of Duquesne Light Company. Shippingport was created and operated under the auspices of Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, whose authority included a substantial role within the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). Its design team was headed by Alvin Radkowsky. Its final core was an experimental, light water moderated, thermal breeder reactor and is notable for its ability to transmute (inexpensive) Thorium 232 to Uranium 233 (the latter being the fissile material that fueled the reaction within the reactor core). The reactor was capable of an output of 60 MWe. The reactor was designed with two uses in mind: for powering military ships, and serving as a prototype for commercial electrical power generation. In 1977, it was converted to a Pressurized Light-Water Breeder Reactor (PLWBR). Over its 25-year life, the power plant operated for about 80,324 hours, producing about 7.4 billion kilowatt hours of electricity... Construction In 1953, US President Dwight D. Eisenhower gave his Atoms for Peace speech to the United Nations. Commercial nuclear power generation was cornerstone of his plan. A proposal by Duquesne Light Company was accepted by Admiral Rickover and the plans for the Shippingport Atomic Power Station started. Ground was broken on Labor Day, September 9, 1954. President Eisenhower remotely initiated the first scoop of dirt at the ceremony. The reactor first went critical at 4:30 AM on December 2, 1957. Sixteen days later, on December 18, the first electrical power was generated and full power was achieved on December 23, 1957, although the station remained in test mode. Eisenhower opened the Shippingport Atomic Power Station on May 26, 1958. The plant was built in 32 months at a cost of $72.5 million. Cores The Shippingport reactor was designed to accommodate different cores during its lifetime; three were used. The first, installed in 1957, held 4 tons of natural uranium and 165 pounds of high-enriched uranium. Seven years later it was retired, after having produced almost 2 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. The second core had increased generating capacity and instrumentation to measure performance. It began operating in 1965 and over the next nine years generated almost 3.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. In 1974 the turbine-generator suffered mechanical failure, causing the plant to be shut down. The third and final core was a light water breeder, which began operating in August 1977 and after testing was brought to full power by the end of that year. It used pellets made of thorium dioxide and uranium-233 oxide; initially the U233 content of the pellets was 5-6% in the seed region, 1.5-3% in the blanket region and none in the reflector region. It operated at 236 MWt, generating 60 MWe and ultimately produced over 2.1 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. After five years the core was removed and found to contain nearly 1.4% more fissile material than when it was installed, demonstrating that breeding had occurred. Decommissioning On October 1, 1982, the reactor ceased operations after 25 years. Dismantlement of the facility began in September 1985. In December 1988, the 956-ton (870-T) reactor pressure vessel/neutron shield tank assembly was lifted out of the containment building and loaded onto land transportation equipment in preparation for removal from the site and shipment to a burial facility in Washington State. US Navy LCS patrols over south China Sea to side with Philippine &Vietnam against China Power
USS Freedom (LCS 1) conducted patrols in the South China Sea during its maiden operational deployment to Southeast Asia, US Navy (USN) officials revealed on 6 January. Speaking with reporters, the admiral in charge of the USN's surface forces acknowledged that the navy's first Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) had executed a "standard patrol" in the South China Sea region during its 10-month presence in the Western Pacific. The revelation came to light two weeks after Freedom concluded its deployment, a deployment which saw the ship operate largely out of Changi Naval Base in Singapore and participated in training exercises with regional partners. "[The ship] was tasked to do some South China Sea patrols, in some areas that we have an interest in," Vice Admiral Tom Copeman, commander of US Naval Surface Forces, said during his telephone briefing from San Diego, California, where Freedom and its sister ships USS Independence (LCS 2) and USS Fort Worth (LCS 3) are home ported. A fourth ship, Coronado (LCS 4), is scheduled to join the fleet in April. During the South China Sea patrols, Freedom conducted surface surveillance using its radars and sensors just as any other USN ship in the fleet might on behalf of the US 7th Fleet commander, Adm Copeman said. "You're developing ... the maritime picture within the area in which your sensors can see," he explained. The crew also conducted flight operations in the area with Freedom 's embarked MH-60R helicopter, and also launched its 11 m rigid-hull inflatable boats to gather information about other vessels. Adm Copeman added that Freedom participated in 'Operation Damayan', the typhoon relief efforts in the Philippines, en route to Guam and its subsequent homeward transit across the Pacific.
