The NOAA polar-orbiting satellites (POES) have been collecting sea surface temperature data for over 22 years. This animation is a compilation of that data from January 1985 - January 2007. Of note are the changes in the Gulf Stream, El Nino and La Nina cycles in the Pacific, and the seansonal changes in sea ice cover.

We kick off the first full week of December under more high pressure and mostly dry weather but this week has a few more twists than last week. We still see a few daytime downpours, again mainly around Central Plateau but a few also possible around Central Otago. However in coastal Otago a cooler breeze over Tuesday and Wednesday may drop daytime highs into the late teens while highs closer to 30 continue inland. Despite the brief early/mid week cooling phase for some coastal areas in the south most of New Zealand will remain hotter and drier than average this week - with even hotter weather possible at the end of the week ahead of some rain makers in the Tasman Sea - but these are likely to weaken as they move in, not bringing relief to all. But perhaps most importantly we take a look at sea surface temperatures and discover that the sea temperatures between New Zealand and Australia are a staggering 6 degrees above average. http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz

One of the amazing properties of water on Earth is that water has the highest heat capacity of just about any natural substance known. It takes months for the Atlantic waters to absorb the intense tropical sunlight, but during the process an amazing amount of energy is stored in the water. This energy makes its way into tropical storm clouds when water evaporates from the ocean surface. Water molecules are in essence "mobile solar collectors" that transfer the ocean's energy into clouds, where the energy can then power a hurricane.

The animation shows the progression of sea surface temperatures anomalies (SSTas) during the 2015-16 El Niño event. Through a complex feedback, decreasing easterly winds along the equator during an El Nino create less upwelling of colder deeper ocean water and hence are associated with higher temperatures (red). The warmer temperatures affect the overlying air reducing the pressure of the air. This reenforces the the wind circulation changes and the temperature continues to increase. The change in the ocean temperatures impact convection (rain) in the tropics which in turn can impact the atmosphere away from the tropics towards mid-latitudes. Sea surface temperature varies due to solar heating and air-sea exchange of heat, as well as due to transport of warm waters and mixing with cooler, deeper waters. The animation shows the annual anomalies in sea surface temperature (C) in the North Atlantic, varying from -1.5C (blue) to +1.5C (red). The animation is broadly similar to the ocean heat content change, regions of higher sea surface temperature generally coinciding with greater ocean heat content, although there are detailed differences, particularly in the subtropical latitudes. Again there is strong decadal variability for the ocean gyres, as well as a recent surface warming for 2000 to 2010. The sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies are generally viewed as being driven by anomalies in air-sea fluxes on interannual timescales (greater heat input from the atmosphere leads to warmer SST), but might feedback back and determine the air-sea fluxes on decadal or longer timescales (a warmer SST leads to a greater loss of heat from the ocean to the atmosphere). There is also a physical transport of the SST anomalies on all timescales.

Scientists have discovered that sea temperatures are rising much faster than previously thought. Ocean heat is a key indicator of global warming and a new system for measuring heat has revealed that the old system was out by about 40%. Scientists behind the study predict that by the end of the century, sea temperature will rise by 0.78 degrees Celsius. Despite it sounding like a small difference - it can have a devastating effect. Global temperatures have warmed significantly since 1880, the beginning of what scientists call the "modern record." At this time, the coverage provided by weather stations allowed for essentially global temperature data. As greenhouse gas emissions from energy production, industry and vehicles have increased, temperatures have climbed, most notably since the late 1970s. In this animation of temperature data from 1880-2011, reds indicate temperatures higher than the average during a baseline period of 1951-1980, while blues indicate lower temperatures than the baseline average. Other than dealing a blow to the local fishing industry the phenomenon may bring about other concerning changes. The weather agency warns it may cause worse heatwaves in the years to come. Seo Eun-kyung explains further. The seas surrounding the Korean Peninsula are getting warmer. According to a report from the Korean Meteorological Administration released Thursday, the average temperature in July stood at 21-point-36 degrees Celsius in 2010, but was 24-point-25 degrees Celsius during the same month this year. That's a rise of nearly 3 degrees Celsius. The weather agency says the average water temperature in July in the West Sea, the Southern Sea, and the East Sea surrounding the Korean peninsula has jumped by an average of zero-point-34 degrees Celsius per year since 2010. The weather agency anticipates that warmer seas around Korea could lead to a number of negative socio-economic effects, and also bring worse annual heat waves to the Korean Peninsula. "There are number of reasons... first of course, the fish catch will drop due to the rising temperatures and fish farms will suffer from this result. This will lead to a massive shutdown of fish farms." Prolonged heatwaves caused by climate change are one of the main reasons for the rising sea temperatures. Another reason for the warmer sea temperature is that the Korean Peninsula has been directly hit by typhoons in recent years, which has prevented the cold water deep below the sea's surface from mixing with the warm surface water. The meteorological agency says it will work with the South Korean government to try to minimize the impact of rising sea temperatures. Seo Eun-kyung, Arirang News. Although it may not be immediately obvious when we visit the beach, sea-level rise is affecting coastlines all over the world. For low-lying countries such as the Netherlands, sea-level rise and tidal surges are a constant threat. Our oceans are rising as a consequence of climate change. As the temperature of seawater increases it expands and the ice melting from ice sheets and glaciers adds more water to the global ocean. We know this because satellites high above our heads measure the temperature of the sea surface and of our changing ice. While the global averaged trend is towards rising levels, there are many regional differences so that in some places it is rising and in other places it is falling. Satellites carrying altimeter instruments systematically measure the height of the sea surface so that sea-level rise can be closely monitored. It’s part of the Kingdom of Denmark, considered a self-governing constituent country. So it’s almost a country? Kind of a country? Well, most of the people who live there are not Danish. They are Inuit. Iceland is a country. Both are wayy north. In fact, north of 60 degrees north of the Earth’s equator. So in the winter they have little sunlight, but in the summer the sun doesn’t seem to ever go down. The Vikings, or more accurately the Norsemen, were the first European settlers of both Iceland and Greenland, reaching the two places hundreds of years before Columbus sailed west. However, Greenland was first settled by various Inuit tribes thousands of years before European arrival. The Norseman were the first settlers of Iceland, arriving around the year 870. So Iceland is one of the most recent islands ever settled by humans. Islands? Yeah, both Iceland and Greenland are islands. Greenland is the largest island in the world. Both have hardly any people. Iceland has a population of around 350,000, while Greenland has a population of around 57,000, despite being about 21 times bigger than Iceland. There are more people in the city of Omaha, Nebraska, than both Iceland and Greenland COMBINED. Both have hardly any native species of plants and animals. There are absolutely no native reptiles or amphibians on the two islands. Get this, Greenland has mosquitoes, that can be pretty relentless in the summer especially since it’s been getting warmer there, but Iceland? Nope. Iceland apparently has no mosquitoes. Most residents of both are concentrated in one single city. More than half of Icelanders live in or around Reykjavík, Iceland’s largest city, and about a third of Greenlanders live in Nuuk, Greenland’s largest city. The biggest religion in both countries is Christianity, specifically having ties with Lutheranism. The Church of Denmark dominates in Greenland, and the Church of Iceland dominates in, um, you know, Iceland. But really, Iceland is much less religious than Greenland. It’s a very secular country, and church attendance tends to be low there. Both are more politically and culturally aligned with Europe than North America, despite the fact that Greenland is part of North America. Both have a parliamentary system of government. As I mentioned earlier, Greenland is technically still part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but it governs itself. Denmark only still controls Greenland’s defense and foreign relations. Both have economies that revolve fishing and fish processing and the metals. Greenland, however, is heavily dependent on Denmark in terms of investment dollars. Tourism is much bigger in Iceland than Greenland. Both are members of NATO. Both are not members of the European Union. Well, Denmark is so Greenland is closely linked to it. Both Iceland and Greenland have universal health care. Based solely on the names of the two, it may seem that Iceland and Greenland are two very different places, and yep, they mostly are, but they also have many, many differences.
