Girls only!! No boys allowed for an entire week! I left to go to girls camp all by myself! It was my first time away from my family in my entire life! I went boating and tubing, rode a giant unicorn, played on tire swings, went hiking, did skits, learned songs, carved soap, ate camp food, and stayed up late talking to all the other girls. Girls camp was a super awesome time, and I can't wait to go back next year!! I hope you like the vlog, I filmed it all by myself! Horizons - Girls Summer STEAM Camp at Clarkson University
The Horizons Program at Clarkson University is intended to help young women embrace the excitement of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM), and to better understand and communicate its everyday use and importance. Through fun and challenging hands-on projects, the Horizons curriculum uses an integrated instructional module in mathematics, science, and engineering, supported by the arts and technology. We believe in a holistic approach to education. Additionally, that it is important to foster growth and balance in the life of a participant in every course. Thus, the life skills component further enhances the instruction as participants build confidence, personal insight, leadership and team spirit in an emotionally supported learning environment. At Horizons, participants are taught by a predominantly female staff composed of teachers and other professionals. Our young guests are also accompanied and mentored by program assistants who are undergraduate or graduate college females who excel in STEAM disciplines. Group sizes are small, so each participant has the opportunity to form a lasting relationship with staff and peers. http://www.clarkson.edu/horizons

Scary Night At Summer Sleepaway Camp
By Jenna | Ready to "wear it out loud?” Merch store open, SHOP NOW: http://bit.ly/storybooth-merch | Subscribe: http://bit.ly/sub2storybooth | Record your story @ https://storybooth.com or our iPhone app for a chance to get animated. Comment, like, share this story. Every summer, Jenna and her best friend Rebecca go to sleep away camp. And every summer up until this particular one, there was never really any summer camp type problems, nothing too weird or scary, and the days and nights would just flow along - perfect! But this summer, just three days into camp, sleepaway camp, a girl in their bunk woke up in the middle of the night screaming and crying. Everyone woke up, of course, and asked her what happened, what was wrong. She was literally as white as a sheet of paper and looked like she had just seen a ghost. When she had calmed down enough she told everyone that she had woken up and seen three creepy children sitting in the middle of the floor of their bunk holding hands. Everyone freaked out and started screaming and running around, but Jenna didn't believe it. She didn't believe until another girl ran up and said "wait, you saw it too? I thought it was just a dream I had." That was it - everyone started going crazy - until finally a camp director had to come in and quiet them down. After a scary sleepless night, Jenna and Rebecca went up to a counselor they knew and asked her if there were any summer camp legends involving creepy children showing up in the middle of the night. The counselor got very serious all of a sudden, knelt down, and told them that it wasn't legend - it was true! She told them how fifty years earlier, when the summer camp was started, there was a crazy cook who ran the kitchen and mess hall. That first summer, the crazy cook chopped up some of the children and baked them into chicken pies. The counselor then went on to tell them that these three scary creepy children that the other campers had seen were the ghosts of the kids who had been chopped up and baked into the other campers' dinners. The girls who had gathered around flipped out - they were convinced that the scary story was totally and completely true. It was one of those scary true stories you hear about. How else would the girl have seen three kids, and the counselor's story was so perfectly perfect. The girls told everyone they could, and soon the whole camp was buzzing about the scary nights they had ahead of them. So, that night, when they went to bed, they all kept their flashlights on and the covers pulled up over their heads, and then waited for their counselors to call it a night and go to sleep. At midnight they all pulled their covers down and there, suddenly, they saw three creepy children in the middle of the floor, holding hands, swaying, and chanting weird ritualistic chants. The girls started freaking out again. They jumped out of their bunk beds - some of them fell - and a counselor woke up, so mad, and came in and started screaming at all of them. She shined her flashlight on the three figures by the door and it was three boys from the boys camp, dressed up and pranking them because they had heard about the story going around. Even still, it scared the wits out of the girls, one of the scariest nights of their lives. The boys were suspended from summer camp for a week! And, even though it all turned out to be nothing, still, it was hard to eat the chicken pies after that... - - - We love this true story. What's your story? storybooth wants to hear it! GEMS (Girls Exploring Math & Science) Summer Camp at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
This video is a shortened version of the video that was created at the end of the 2009 GEMS camp, "Science Around the World." Girls received mini passports and stamps from all the countries that we "visited." In Egypt, we mummified apples with a chemistry experiment, created shadufs, an engineering construct to carry water, and learned about Egyptian culture. In China, we made paper, learned about Chinese inventions, and culture. In France, we studied physics in the pool and engineering by building gumdrop structures. In Canada, we built robots and programmed them and studied the native people by creating dream catchers. In Japan, we learned about anime and used 3-D computer-aided design programs as well as studied geometry through origami. Then, we all went to the Kennedy Space Center to learn about the International Space Station with a cool IMAX movie and rode all of the virtual reality rides there! Each year, the GEMS camp had new themes and incorporated the arts into STEM, creating STEAM. Dr. Joanne L DeTore created the GEMS camp in 2006 when she searched for a STEM camp for her daughter and couldn't find one. The pedagogical design of GEMS used a variety of learning styles and active learning strategies, specifically tailored from her research on gifted girls. Modules are between 20 minutes to an hour with short breaks built into the longer modules to account for attention span. A snack and chat was built into the schedule to encourage and foster friendships in camp and girls were arranged in three to four distinct cohort groups, used to increase the level of bonding between the girls. Counselors were consistent with each cohort groups so that group identity and trust was easily fostered. In addition, an arts component was used, which was shown to increase interest and participation with our assessment surveys. All counselors were high-achieving, extroverted Embry-Riddle students and an effort was made to attract female and minority counselors. All counselors were background checked and received extensive week-long training before the program began as well as debriefing each day to ensure that all campers were enjoying their experience. Each cohort group had a chief counselor who had previous experience and training. Dr. DeTore also created a training manual for camp counselors with protocols for various emergency and non-emergency situations. Co-directors for GEMS have included Dr. Pam Lochmiller, NSF Visiting Space Physics Professor and Dr. Heidi Steinhauer, Chair of Engineering Fundamentals, who served from 2008-2010). Assistant Camp Directors have included Jennifer MacRae, ERAU Aerospace Engineering student (2007-2009) and Tora Simpson, ERAU Aerospace Engineering Grad & Mechanical Engineering Graduate Student (2009- 2010). With grant funding and tuition, the camp paid for itself and often made a profit for the Office of Diversity. It employed 20 student assistants and served between 75-100 girls between the ages of 8-13 years of age. The camp was one week and ran from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. and offered before and after care for working families at an extra charge. Faculty were compensated for their help with summer stipends. Girls received a t-shirt, swag bag filled with STEAM-related products, and a DVD of their camp experience culminating in an awards ceremony and video viewing for family members and campers. Trips included the Marine Science Center, The Kennedy Space Center, Universal Studios, Disney and other venues and included a chartered bus and paid lunch at the venue. The GEMS Camp was a part of the long-term recruiting efforts of the University Office of Diversity Initiatives at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. While under the director of Dr. DeTore, the Office of Diversity and the College of Engineering were awarded the prestigious ABET President's Award for Diversity in 2008, the national accrediting body for engineering, for their innovative and many STEM programs for women and minorities at the university and in the community. Dr. DeTore was also instrumental in helping the College of Engineering to secure a five-year NSF grant, the NSF S-STEM grant in 2009 for over $600,000 for scholarships for women and minorities majoring in engineering. University Day Camp Teaches Girls STEM
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (CBS 2/FOX 28)--Women in America are still underrepresented in the science and engineering workforce. Many in this community are taking steps to turn things around. This week Mount Mercy University is hosting ExploreU, a science day camp for girls. These young and eager faces are here to learn science, technology, engineering, and math also known as STEM related subjects. "I think I'm definitely getting a better level of understanding on Math and geometry and these types of things," said middle school student Sophia Chen. Sophia Chen aspires to do something in the medical field, just like her parents who are scientists. "It's a hard field to go into, but I think it would be beneficial to me in the future," she said. That's exactly what Mount Mercy University's ExploreU day camp hopes to show these girls, that STEM careers are high in demand. "Once you get into the STEM field, you tend to have a job for the rest of your life and they are very high paid," Mount Mercy University, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Jitka Stehnova. AT the camp, girls get to learn things in a much more interactive way than in a regular classroom, which allows them to see the bigger picture in various formulas," said Stehnova. "It's for them to get more excited about stem fields, and expose them to new kinds of math and computer science that they don't see at schools," said Stephnova. If the faces at the camp are any indication, the girls are not only sold, they want others to join in "You find that it's not as hard as it seems and that it will be all worth it in the end," Chen said. This is the third year of ExploreU. The camp ends this Friday but program leaders plan to continue the program next year.
