There are many misconceptions about what causes the Aurora Borealis when it really requires solar winds, magnetic fields and excited atmospheric gases. Learn more at HowStuffWorks.com: http://science.howstuffworks.com/nature/climate-weather/atmospheric/question471.htm Share on Facebook: http://goo.gl/FMuiBa Share on Twitter: http://goo.gl/TR4YyU Subscribe: http://goo.gl/ZYI7Gt Visit our site: http://www.brainstuffshow.com The Northern Lights are beautiful and odd and have understandably inspired many myths. The Vikings thought they were a bridge between our world and Asgard where Thor and the other gods live. In another Norse myth, they are the light reflected of the armor of the Valkyries. And people in Finland thought it was the archangel Michael (John Travolta) battling Beelzebub (the devil). Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. All wrong. It was the famous early astronomer and recanter of science, Galileo Galilei, who gave the Northern lights the name Aurora Borealis, which means “dawn of the North” in Latin. But it wasn’t until Norwegian scientist Christian Birkeland figured it out in 1896 that the true origin of the auroras was understood. In the center of the Earth, the molten iron core generates magnetic fields that extend through the crust and into space around the planet, creating what’s called Earth’s magnetosphere. It’s a pretty great thing that Earth has it, because the magnetosphere protects us from all manner of charged particles spit out from the Sun. The Sun is so hot that it produces plasma (a fourth state of matter) where positively charged atoms (ions) and negatively charge electrons flow freely around one another. These highly charged particles have enough energy to escape the Sun’s gravity and fly out into space, barreling toward Earth at 1 million miles per hour like a shotgun blast of solar hate. This is called solar wind. When they encounter our magnetosphere, most of these ions and electrons bounce harmlessly off and Earth is saved. But some of these particles make it through the magnetosphere where it’s weakest (at the north and south poles), and when they do the light show begins. The electrons that make it into our atmosphere interact with some of the elements there, particularly oxygen and nitrogen. The electrons transfer energy to them, exciting them in the process. To calm down, the excited atoms must release some energy, which they do as tiny packets of light called photons -- beautiful, beautiful photons. Depending on where in the atmosphere the electrons interact with these other atoms, different colors are produced. Oxygen emits a yellow-green color up to about 150 miles in the atmosphere. After that, it turns red. Nitrogen emits a nice blue color about 60 miles up. And don’t forget these colors can blend, which can create glowing pinks, purples and whites. It’s like Miami Beach up there. This interplay is most vibrant during solar storms, which depend somewhat on the Sun’s solar cycle. And, although these lights can be produced at all hours, they aren’t visible during the day, since the sunlight outshines them. Best Place in the World to See the Northern Lights

The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis are a strange natural phenomenon that can only be witnessed in the most northern regions of the globe. We had the once in a lifetime opportunity to go to Yellowknife Canada and watch the best aurora of the entire year so far. It was truly a magical moments that no words will ever be able to describe. This is a moment I will cherish for the rest of my life. But you'd eat your young. We swam among the northern lights, And hid beyond the edge of night, Waiting for the dawn to come, And sang a song, To save us all. I am alive, I'm just playing dead, I'm gonna say what should have never been said, The giants of the world are crashing down, The end is near, I hear the trumpets sound. But you'd eat your young. We swam among the northern lights, And hid beyond the edge of night, And waited for the dawn to come, And sang a song, To save us all. (Oh, woh-oh yeah) (Oh, woh-oh yeah) You'd eat your young. You'd eat your young. You'd eat your young. You'd eat your young. I am alive I'm just playing dead! I am alive I'm just playing dead! We swam among the northern lights, And hid beyond the edge of night, Waiting for the dawn to come, And sang a song, To save us all. Have you ever seen the beautiful auroral displays in the high latitudes? These are the Northern and Southern Lights. But what dark physics wizardry is going on to make this happen? Here in Canada, we call them the Northern Lights or the Aurora Borealis, but the lucky folks in the far southern latitudes see them too. On a good night, you can see flickering sheets of light that dance across the night sky, producing an amazing display of colors. You can see green, red and even yellow and purple ghostly displays. So what causes the Northern Lights? They’re produced as our planet moves through the chemtrails emanating from the womp-rat sized exhaust ports of Planet X. Originating in the Bush-Cheney administration during a failed co-invasion attempt of the lizard people from the hollow part of the flat earth and aliens from John Carpenter’s THE THING. They cause diabetes, gluten sensitivity, itchy bun noodles and homeopathy and herald the coming of the Grand Nagus of MMA-UFC-ENTJ-LOL-WTF-BBQ. That is, if you believe everything you read on the internet. Auroras are in fact caused by interactions between energetic particles from the Sun and the Earth’s magnetic field. The Earth is filled with liquid metal, and it rotates inside turning our planet into a giant magnet. Invisible magnetic field lines travel from the Earth’s northern magnetic pole to its southern magnetic pole. This is why compasses point north, they’re following the field lines produced by this giant metallic spinning goo core. Or as I like to call it “The Planetary Shield Generator”, which should not be confused with the giant whirling metallic debris field orbiting the Earth which is our “Alien Invasion Shield”. Which you can learn about in another episode. So why would we need a Planetary Shield, you might ask? It is because we are perpetually under assault by our great enemy, the Sun. Our Sun is constantly releasing a flurry of energetic particles right at us. These particles are electrically charged and driven to Earth by the Solar Wind. When they encounter the Earth’s magnetic field, they’re forced into a spiral along the magnetic field lines. Eventually they collide with an oxygen or nitrogen atom in the Earth’s atmosphere and release photons of light. So, thanks to the spinning magnet goo core, our planetary shield converts these particles into beautiful night time displays. Although there can be auroras almost any night in the highest latitudes, we see the most brilliant auroral displays after large flares on the Sun. The most powerful flares blast a hail of particles that’s so intense, auroral displays can be seen at mid and even low-latitudes. It sounds dangerous, but we’re perfectly safe here, beneath our protective atmosphere and magnetic field. You might be amazed to know that auroral displays can even make sounds. People have reported crackling noises coming from the sky during an aurora. Even though the auroras themselves are at very high altitudes, the particle interactions can happen just a few hundred meters above the ground. People have reported hearing claps and crackles during an aurora, and this has been verified by microphones placed by scientists. If you could get high up into the atmosphere, I’m sure the sounds would be amazing. The interactions between the Sun and our planet are just another gift we get from the night sky. If you've never seen an aurora with your own eyes, you really need to add them to your bucket list. Organize a trip to northern Europe or Alaska and get a chance to see this amazing display of nature. Have you ever been lucky enough to see the Northern Lights? Tell us a story in the comments below. Alaska's Epic Northern Lights

How to Create Northern Lights in Photoshop

16:38
I Guarantee I Can Teach You to Master Photoshop. Learn How: https://phlearn.com/aaronwillteachyou How to Create Northern Lights Northern Lights are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere. Add this effect to any night photo in a few simple steps. Painting Northern Lights The key to painting Northern Lights is to start with a simple shape and then warp it into the final form of the lights. In this case, we create a special brush that scatters brush strokes, giving a more random pattern to the lights. After scattering brush strokes, a motion blur is applied to make it look like the brush strokes are streaks of light. It can be helpful to re-apply the blur filter to give a more scattered look. Once you have created a 'strip' of Northern Lights, it is time to warp it into place. To warp, press CTRL+T to bring up the transformation dialog. Then right-click on the layer and select 'warp'. The Northern Lights

01:00
Get more Tips here! www.destinationtips.com See the lights from Canada, Iceland, Finland, Scotland, Sweden, Norway and space! What are the Northern Lights? These dazzling displays occur when proton and electrons stream out from the sun and slam into the Earth's magnetic field. Different ions make different colors, such as vibrant waves of green, blue, purple and red across the sky. They're considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Vikings thought they were the shining weapons of immortal warriors. Laplanders thought these "fox fires" were created by the swooshing tail of an Arctic fox. Inuit believed they were the souls of animals. Auroras are relatively dim, and the redder light is often at the limit of what human retinas can pick up. Watch them through a video camera for better viewing! The best time to see them is March to April, September to October, or anytime there is a solar storm. They are unpredictable, and there are no guarantees you'll see them if you visit the north at that time.

Acrylic Pouring - Large Tree Ring, AURORA BOREALIS Northern Lights Pour Fluid Art light. Re-Pour

06:46
So i didn't like the fluid art spin art piece, it was muddied and the colours just felt yuk to me, i wanted to test an acrylic pour tree ring to see if i could create an Aurora Borealis Northern Lights like sky effect. My plan would be to silhouette some mountains and trees below to frame the Aurora sky once its dry. As this is a reused canvas, id be using it for testing only. Its unfortunate i lost a lot of the gold, but ill add more on the real pour. It is thinly layered between the blues though. Its also found it very hard to hold your hand out for so long, watch for the wrist twitches towards the end of the ring pour! Please share the vid, it helps me to continue my art and videos. The World's Very First REAL-TIME Northern Lights Captured in 4K Ultra High Definition

04:25
Come along with us on a virtual experience, Aurora Chasing in 4K Ultra High Def! Despite being under the weather (in all senses, it was well below zero and we were quite sick with the flu), Marketa, Angus and I ventured out to capture the Northern Lights with our newest tool, the Atomos Shogun 4K external recorder. We combined this with a Sony a7S and a DJI Ronin for a look at what's it like to "Chase the Lights." The Atomos did great and while the Ronin usually does a good job it seemed quite jittery on this night. I'm in contact with support and hope to find a resolution to this but it's done that the last few times I've taken it out in temps colder than 10ºF. Keep in mind it is very windy, I'm stumbling around in knee deep snow and it's about 0ºF so considering, it still held up rather well. This is a sample of how the Ronin should and usually does behave. http://youtu.be/1bb5qGmtG_M As of 1/14/15 I'm still waiting to hear back from DJI. It seems we have a few things to work out both with the Ronin and the Shogun but are very excited for this amazing trio once we get things rolling smoothly. If you'd like to be out there having your portraits taken in front of these magnificent Northern Lights, join us for a night under the Aurora. http://www.ronnmurrayphoto.com/NorthernLightsTours/TourOptions/Winter-Aurora-Alaska This video intended to show what's its like to actually be out beneath these amazing Auroras we witness almost nightly. Please explore this channel, and our website for the more polished videos. Sweden Lapland Tree Hotel - Northern Lights & Dogsledding

13:44
😘 P L E A S E • S U B S C R I B E - 💃 🕺 http://bit.ly/2B0UXdt If you're interested in seeing the northern lights, visiting beautiful Lapland, or dog sledding in Sweden, then this is your guide to a trip of a lifetime. This is your complete guide to the Arctic adventures in Swedish Lapland complete with dog sledding, Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), snowmobiling, & a trip to the iconic Tree Hotel (aka the treehouse hotel). Our adventure began as we flew through the main Swedish hub of Stockholm and up to Luleå, a city with a population of 80,000 that borders the Arctic Circle. As we stepped outside of Luleå airport, the crisp sub-zero temperatures made us gasp for air. Little did we know that the Arctic adventures ahead of us would be the thing that would truly take our breath away. We arrived at the Treehotel - which is very close to the Ice Hotel and just south of Abisko , a destination in itself, about an 80-minute drive from Luleå in the snow. After a gourmet dinner of arctic char and fresh blueberry dessert, it was time to check into our tree house. We hiked 800 meters up the wintery white path, following the little lanterns that illuminated the snowy hillside. We passed various tree houses of varying shapes and sizes until we arrived at our unique tree house, the UFO. The flying saucer nestled itself in the trees, 20 feet up above ground. Just as though we were in a Star Trek flick, the bottom of the UFO opened up and a staircase dropped down to the ground as if to say, “beam me up, Scotty.” We climbed the staircase and opened the doors to our flying Swedish saucer. From the moment we touched down in Swedish Lapland to our very last day, it snowed. While this may have been beautiful for photos, it’s horrible for viewing the Northern Lights. On our last day, there were rumors that we may get to see the dancing green fairy in the skies. We checked our Aurora app religiously and found out that we may be able to see the Northern Lights between the hours of 9 pm and 11 pm. As we waited for the Aurora Borealis to flare, we stayed warm by doing push-ups and air squats, forcing our heart rates to soar. All of a sudden, Mother Nature opened her green eyes and pirouetted through the Arctic sky and our hearts seemed to stop. There they were – the Northern Lights – right before our very eyes. The world suddenly seemed to stop rotating, time seemed to slow, and we were there – present with our surroundings and connected to the universe. Scott and I immediately embraced, cognizant of the rarity of the moment and grateful for the opportunity to witness Mother Nature at her finest. Thanks for watching! Tears Are Not Enough - Northern Lights [Making Of] (with Names) Pt 3 v2

19:49
NEW Footage! NEW Version with complete name locations. Even a bonus clip from CBC News. It's 1985, Award winning producer David Foster brings together the top talent in Canada to make an Ethiopian famine relief song. This video is a dedication to the recognition of those who are involved in the Northern Lights project. I, like many other people, have come across lists of names of those who participated in the song and have wondered who they are and where they are in the video. Also, I have come across names i recognize but I am unable to see what their role was in the production. So I put together a video showing the making of the song "Tears Are Not Enough" with the purpose of identifying all the talent from those various lists. I hope I mentioned everybody, and that I correctly identified everybody. Please comment me and I will make corrections. In the compiling of all the information for the names, it really makes me proud to be Canadian and proud of the talent in our music industry. I do NOT take any credit for the video content as it is all from an original VHS tape from the CBC that I bought. I apologize for the poor video quality as it appears the video has degraded after 27 years. That was my first version. Now 4 years later, I have searched and bought a version of the CBC documentary from Japan on Laser Disc. Yes! While we were buying VHS tapes that self destructed, the Japanese had digital LDs! And with all the contributions from Youtube fans like you to help me make corrections to names and spellings and locations, and with NEW footage; I have re-created the video to make a cleaner and better looking production. This video was put together using iMovie '09 on a iMac 2010 as an exercise to learn and practice how to use the editing program. I also now have a channel for documenting the history of the rise of Japanese anime in North America. CHEAPEST way to see Aurora Lights - Dream Come True

Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern lights is a MUST see experience and this is how you do it CHEAP. Filmora9 is now officially released. Download Now: http://bit.ly/2GppPHA Price: USD59.99/Lifetime - Thanks for sponsoring today's video! As a South or North American, the cheapest way to see Aurora is in Whitehorse Yukon, Canada. I compared it with all other options from Canada to Alaska, USA and from transportation to accommodations, Yukon is the place to do it! Manitoba also offers some Aurora borealis in the north of the province but it's very expensive to get there. This is why Whitehorse is the cheapest and my top pick for Aurora. #Aurora #LostLeBlanc #Filmora9

Glittery Northern Lights with Cat Eyes

10:40
Hey, guys. So, in today's video, I am going to be once again using the very wonderful Cat Eyes gel polish. If you haven't watched the other videos and you don't know what these are, they are essentially gel polishes that have magnetic particles inside of them which means that you can move the particles around using any type of magnets. OMG! How cool is that? Although, the wonderful team at Naio has created two absolutely fantastic magnetic tools to get the most out of your designs! So, first of all, I am going to be creating a base coat with Serious Black. This wonderful black gives you great coverage in one coat so you won't need to do a second coat at all. I love it. After curing that, we are going to get a wonderful selection of the Cat Eyes colours, so for this design I'm using Stratosphere, Frenemy, Poison Ivy, Etherial, Galaxy and Cracked Ice, however you can choose whatever colours you want from the Cat Eyes collection to create this design. So, what I'm gonna do is. I'm gonna paint on each colour randomly and create a sort of messy rainbow and then I am going to take the ombre brush and create a blend down the nail. I think it sort of has a Vincent Van Gough look to it when I do this, but please let us know in the comment box below which artist this design reminds you of. Now, I'm going to take a round magnet and just hold it over various parts of the nail to create this sort of cool black hole looking design which reminds me of the northern lights and then we are going to cure that when we're happy with it. Next, we are gonna pop some of this gorgeous glittery gel polish called Gem Explosion onto a palette and paint little streaks onto to the nail with this colour and then cure that. Finally, we are going to seal in the design with top coat and then pop it back into the lamp for a final cure. There you are, guys. I hope you enjoyed this video and if you did please give it a like, subscribe to our channel and I will see you in the next video! Samuel, the older brother, is brain-damaged and the younger brother, Simon, has an important decision to make concerning himself and Samuel, but Simon's efforts to get through to his brother seem to be in vain. Renaissance - Northern Lights

04:08
Band: Renaissance Song: Northern Lights Album: A song for all seasons Year: 1978 Genre: Progressive Rock Lyrics: Desination outward bound I turn to see the northern lights behind the wing Horizons seem to beckon me Learned how to cry too young So now I live to sing The northern lights are in my mind They guide me back to you Horizons seem to beckon me Learned how to cry too young So now I live to sing Though it's hard away from you Travelling roads and just passing through It's not for money and it's not for fame I just can't explain, sometimes it's lonely Marking the space between the days Early hours pass away I sing to you of northern lights I sing for you of northern nights Past or future, here or there Shelter comes in words from you, so talk to me I hear your voice, it comforts me In morning dreams I take your hand You walk with me The northern lights are in my mind They guide me back to you Peace enfolds the still night air Home again I look for you and find you there Desintation homeward now Take the easy way, bring me down Making the hard way now I see Hard to be really free, I'm missing you near me Marking the space between the days Early hours pass away I sing to you of northern lights I sing for you of northern nights The northern lights are in my mind They guide me back to you The northern nights are in my eyes They guide me back to you

5 MYTHS ABOUT THE NORTHERN LIGHTS - BUSTED! | snowintromso

11:28
5 Myths about the Northern Lights – busted! *Open the description box for more infos* It’s prime Northern Lights season at the moment and it seems like every provider of Northern Lights safaris throughout Northern Norway, Swedish and Finnish Lapland, as well as Iceland, says that their destination is the best one to watch the Northern Lights – for so many different, not always actually entirely true, reasons. Thus, I thought I’d talk about some common Northern Lights myths I’ve encountered recently with you in this video! :) Table of content: 01:26 #1: Location X has the cleanest air which makes it perfect for seeing the Northern Lights 02:47 #2: Fjords and volcanoes create clouds that diminish your chances of seeing the Northern Lights 05:51 #3: You can only see purple Northern Lights in location X 07:35 #4: You can’t see the Northern Lights in the city – you have to go out of town to see them 08:59 #5: Location X is the best place in the world to see the Northern Lights EDIT: Only Kiruna has a mine, Narvik doesn’t. The latter, however, is connected to the iron ore business in Kiruna by railway as the iron ore is transported to Narvik for further transportation via ships. That’s what I meant but stupidly didn’t say like that, sorry! If you’d like to read more about the topic, here are some of the articles I mentioned in the video that will hopefully help you out: Why there is no "best place" to see the Northern Lights = https://www.snowintromso.com/blog/2018/03/best-place-to-see-northern-lights Tromsø Geophysical Observatory: The Northern Lights - where, when and what = http://www.tgo.uit.no/articl/nord_eng.html Tromsø Geophysical Observatory: The northern lights-what are they? = http://www.tgo.uit.no/articl/theaurora.html As I said, feel free to leave a comment with any and all of your questions about the Northern Lights below! Silenzium - Northern Lights [Official Video]

05:48
We, “Silenzium” trio from Siberia, present to you our new video clip. It was filmed in the winter mountains of the Altai - faraway and sparsely populated area full of ice and snow. It is a song about love, wonderful nature and dwellers of those mysterious places remote from civilization. We hope this video will get you immersed in the atmosphere of a mysterious mountainous fairytale. Or maybe it is not a tale at all but a reality much more truthful than our civilized commonness. So welcome to the land of Siberian mysteries. www.silenzium.com [email protected] Lyrics - Follow the way of the bright northern stars – We will Soar in love’s flight, Be a spark in the dark of all times. Lighting our fire in the icy waste, Melting our heartbeat in the Northern Lights. Satin Jackets feat. David Harks - Northern Lights

04:16
Out now: https://eskimo.lnk.to/northernlights ‘Northern Lights’ is the new single from German music producer Tim Bernhardt of Satin Jackets and Berlin-based British vocalist and songwriter David Harks. Released on Belgium’s Eskimo Recordings it follows on from recent Satin Jackets hits such as ‘Feel Good’ and ‘Never Enough’ and is sure to find favour with anyone who likes their disco Balearic and the pop cosmic. Following a recent trip to Norway to work with fellow Eskimo artists Atella and Cavego, Tim was moved to try and capture some of his experiences there in musical form. “After experiencing a world known for its Northern Lights, I wanted to take that concept and run with it, asking myself how we could reflect this phenomena in music," Tim explains. "Despite a busy schedule, I couldn't help but take a day off and go on a trip exploring the country and the depths and beauty of one of the Fjords in the area. It was absolutely breath-taking." Inspired by Tim’s experiences and music David’s lyrics narrate a journey out on the cosmic highway to find the Northern Lights, his soft vocal delivery underpinning the song’s message and bringing a sense of warmth, nostalgia and expectation as we’re led out in the dusk to explore the both the world below and skies above them. "We locked ourselves into the studio for a few days to let our imagination take its course and weave the impressions into music,” David explains. “The end result was so vivid, it felt like I had been there for it all along."
