This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. In our today’s video, we will talk about setting up direct exports and discuss its peculiarities. Direct export is a method of products promotion on international market through the producer’s own or hired trading opportunities. Is used when the target audience is easy to reach or when customers can find producer on their own. In order to enter the export market successfully, you can apply to: 1. Export department - an organization which deals with all issues on the promotion of products on the international market. 2. Trade representative - an external paid agent who works abroad, knows the product well and represents it on the international market. 3. Trading bureau - a team which contracts on the international markets, stimulates and controls the distributors’ work. 4. Cross border technical support - a team which helps with the documents flow, launch of equipment, staff training, etc. Direct export channels can exist in the following forms: 1. Retail sales - a distribution of goods in small quantities. For example, in online-stores. 2. Corporate sales - a distribution of large batches of goods or complex, requiring processing ones. By organizing direct export, you can get: - potential for salesexpansion; - control over international markets; - monitoring compliance with the marketing program; - opportunity to build long-term relations with consumers; - business experience of working on highly-competitive markets. Marketing is involved in everything from the market research that goes into determining what products consumers are looking for, to the message that is transmitted to consumers to inform them about a product and even persuade them to purchase it. In between those stages, marketing also plays a prominent role in determining how the product should look, designing the packaging that will enclose the product, deciding whether to sell the product through traditional retailers or entirely online, and establishing a price point that is not only attractive to consumers but allows gives the business the opportunity to be profitable. Now when most people think of marketing they often think of advertising, which is completely understandable given we are are constantly exposed to advertisements at home, at the office, and even during our commutes. Although advertising is a component of marketing it certainly does not explain the entire subject. In fact, advertising is simply one of the four different types of promotion, and promotion is one of the four main elements of marketing. So you can see that advertising, like the other marketing elements, merely plays a role in helping businesses create, communicate, and deliver a single unified message to potential customers. So how does a businesses create, communicate, and deliver value to its customers? Although there are many variables at work, a business can increase the probability of success by creating an effective and consistent marketing mix. Often referred to as the 4 P's, the market mix is a collection of four elements that outline the strategy for how a business intends to reach its customers. These four elements include product, place, promotion, and price. The product includes the tangible product or intangible service that will be used to fulfill a customer need or want. The features of a product, its physical form, packaging, warranties, and even after-sale service are all included under the product strategy. Place includes how a business intends to get products from the location they are produced to where they can ultimately be consumed by consumers. Place is often referred to as distribution since we are dealing with logistics. However, place not only includes the physical distribution of the product but also the channel through which it will be sold. Promotion involves establishing the most effective method for communicating with its customers about the various products that it sells. Promotion is primarily meant to communicate, inform, and persuade. An effective promotion strategy, like the other marketing mix elements, depends upon a businesses knowledge of its target customer. This knowledge allows a business to select the best way to communicate with its core audience and ultimately increase the success of its communications. The last element of the market mix is price. Price is the easiest marketing mix element to alter from a technical sense, however it is the most difficult thing to change. The reason is that altering the price of a product affects what consumers pay for that product, and a business can only charge as much as the market is willing to pay for a product. Technically a business can charge whatever price it wants, but that does not mean that consumers have to pay that price. Like the other marketing mix elements, price can send a message to consumers. For example, many believe that maintaining low prices is the best method to attract consumers. Although this can be an effective pricing strategy for certain items, it can also confuse consumers. For example, Tiffany & Co. sells expensive jewelry and is known for high quality and is one of the most recognizable brands. Because Tiffany & Co is known for quality and maybe even exclusivity, it wouldn't benefit from a low price point. Dealing with the psychological aspect of pricing, consumers tend to view less expensive items as cheap in quality compared to their more expensive counterparts. Although this doesn't always hold to be true, businesses are very aware of the impact that price can have on the perceptions of consumers.

Hi, I'm Adam Lovelock from Coconut Creatives and this is Whiteboard Weekly number 18. So this week I'm gonna look at how you should be educating rather than promoting in your marketing. This is something that I think has been a shift in marketing probably over the last 20 years, certainly in the last ten years as we're using the internet more and more. And that's the idea that we should be educating our marketing rather than purely promoting. Now, if you look back in marketing theory promotion was one of the four Ps of marketing, one of the four pillars of marketing. But I believe now it's much more about educating your audience rather than promoting. So one of the key reasons now consumers switch off from sales messages. We do it all the time. If someone is kind of communicating to you directly with loads of sales messages all the time we tend to switch off. But if someone's offering you loads of really good educational material and a product or service you're interested in, then you feel like you're getting value, you're much more likely to switch on to that content. And this could be free blogs, videos, guides. The real key to all of this is when you're creating any of that content. Try to offer as much value as you possibly can. Now, if you do switch to educating rather than promoting with your content, it can sometimes be quite hard to measure the short-term success. You're not as likely to get so many people coming through and conversing on your website if you haven't got a sales message. But over time I'm almost certain if you do it you're gonna see a long-term success with the education marketing. Now if we look at it in a franchise equipment point of view, it's really really important. When someone's looking to buy a franchise, it's a major decision. They're gonna go through a long process of education to get to the point where they decide what kind of franchise they wanna buy and which franchise they're gonna buy. So the more you can educate people through that process, the more success you're likely to have with your marketing. So one of the keys is really, when you are doing this kind of educational marketing please do resist the urge to sell. Because the minute you do that, you're gonna switch people off. I'm not sure if anyone follows Gary Vaynerchuk but he has a really good way of describing how to create educational marketing 'cause it's still important that you do have your sales promotion messages in there but the key is you educate at the same time. And what he says, is you need to take a Jab, Jab, Right Hook approach, I'm being passed a prop, to your marketing. Here's his book about it. So in theory Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook, your educational pieces are the jabs within your marketing and then your right hook in one of your promotions. People are much more likely to be warm and ready for that promotion if you've created a lot valuable content along the way. So it's a good book to read.
