Top 3 Continuous Lighting Options for Product and Flat Lay Photography or Videos
In this video we go through our Top 3 Continuous Lighting Options for Product and Flat Lay Photography or Videos We discuss our three different options including Compact Fluorescent Bulb Double Softbox Lights, Aputure AL-528W LED Panels and the Spectrum Aurora Gold Luxe LED Ring Light. When taking product photos or flat lays, it's important to get the lighting right for an evenly lit shot. Different continuous lighting options provide different results. A quick breakdown of the three we recommended include: Compact Fluorescent Bulb Double Softbox Lights Pros - Relatively inexpensive solution - Large softbox for a soft throw of light and less harsh shadows - Ideal for small or large products / flat lays Cons - Not as energy efficient therefore bulbs don't last as long - Produce a little heat when left on for extended periods - Not dimmable - simple on/off switch Aputure AL-528W LED Panels / LED Panels in General Pros - Energy efficient and about 8-10x longer lasting that fluorescent bulbs - No heat production when left on for extended periods - Can be battery operated / portable - Dimmable to control the light intensity Cons - More expensive than fluorescent bulbs - Harsher light if not used with softboxes or a light a diffuser Spectrum Aurora Gold Luxe LED Ring Light Pros - All the advantages of LED panels with being more energy efficient, no heat production, can be battery operated and dimmed - Some LED Ring lights are colour temperature adjustable between 3200-5500k so you can fine tune the colour temperature to suit the shot - The round catch light provides a nice even light for most shots. - Being a ring shape, it allows you to shoot through the ring light without obstructing the light and create shadows. Cons - Since the ring light is direct light onto the subject (typically positioned front and centre), reflections and hot spots are more prominent on reflective items. Diffusers are available to avoid this Overall we find that LED Panels and the Spectrum Aurora LED Ring Light provides the ideal continuous lighting solution for most product photography and flat lay photography scenarios. Being able to control the intensity of the light, not producing heat when used for extended periods and the ability to be battery operated to use on-location or outdoors if required make LED lights versatile for most situations. LED Continuous Lights vs Strobes for Photography - which is the best studio lighting solution?
Shooting with LED continuous lights vs Strobes for photography - which should you be using? LED Lighting for photography has come a very long way in the last few years and all indications are that constant light sources and LED’s will be the future of portrait lighting and all photographic and video lighting. The real questions right now are do you really understand the differences between continuous lighting and strobes or speedlights? Why would you use one instead of the other? If you are a new photographer which type of studio lighting should you start with? The simple reality is that you will not find one light that is best suited for every situation you will encounter as a photographer. As I have shown you - there are pros and cons to both lighting systems. I actually consider myself lucky that I learned portrait lighting with those cheap silver reflectors and 150 watt bulbs mounted on top of light stands. It made it easier to learn how to see light - because the light was alway on. And it forced me to learn how to really see and manipulate light because the light quality from those cheap silver reflectors is horrible. If you are new to lighting and plan to shoot people like I do or even products, I would whole heartedly encourage you to start with LED lights. The constant light sources will allow you to really see what you are doing and will definitely help you develop your lighting skills much faster. And for you portrait photographers - here is a huge bonus that you get with constant LED’s… studio photographers have a bad habit of working in slightly darker studios so that they can see the effects of their modeling lights. The problem with that is that the modeling lights really aren’t very bright so your subjects pupils expand to gather more light. The result is that you see less of the iris and less color in the eye. Using LED lights for your portrait lighting will generally cause the pupils to contract which allows you to see more of the iris and more color. Some of you are going to ask about the new LED flash combos and if they are worth the money. In my opinion - at the time of this video - they are gimmicks and definitely not worth your hard earned money. If you are a geartographer and the GAS is killing you - go for it - they're interesting, but for practical purposes, they are too small and way too expensive. You can actually save yourself money by owning separate flash and LED systems compared to purchasing the few combination lights that are currently hitting the market. Please remember the newest gear and the most expensive gear don’t make you photography better. Only you can do that. Purchase your gear based on your real needs. Lighting a Bottle with LEDs | Cologne Photography Tutorial

Unlike speedlights, we see each adjustment made to the lighting immediately, and this can help us craft the scheme to simplify our edit in photoshop. By using a diffusion material as our background, we can place a nice radial gradient behind the bottle, giving the cologne / perfume volume through the refraction. Product Photography Lighting Basics with Michael Corsentino
https://www.behindtheshutter.com/product-photography-lighting-basics/ We’re all exposed to product photography every single day of our lives, so there will always be a strong demand for it. This month, I take a look at some of the basic concepts of product photography and how to approach lighting and other technical details. Adding product photography to your services can be extremely profitable. But these tips are helpful whether you want to start doing it professionally or just sell some stuff on eBay. One of the bonuses of product photography is the lack of the logistics, time constraints and budgetary concerns encountered with location shoots and managing creative teams. It’s just you alone in your studio with a product and your lights. You get to Zen out, put on some music and spend as much time as you need noodling and finessing everything until it’s perfect. For me, that’s heaven. Let’s look at how I approached a recent shoot of high-end stereo components for a leading stereo magazine.

Product Photography Home Studio Killer Tips
http://www.brooklynphotoworks.com/product-photography-home-studio-killer-tips In this video, I take you guys thru the entire process of a home studio product photography shoot. I share with you every detail of my setup, every photo I take and how I made it. I give you my camera settings and flash settings. I also show you my mistakes and how I corrected them. Product photography requires patience. This is not a quick process and there's a bit of set up involved. There's also the mentality. Taking your time to get your exposure just right is critical to getting the right shots. In this video, I demonstrate the amazing Cactus RF60 speedlites and V6 transceivers using a 4-speedlite setup. The flexibility and power you have with this kind of setup is amazing. Being able to control power to each of your speedlites from the top of the camera is so important, especially when you're working alone with a lot of lights. These Cactus flashes and transceiver - receivers, have built-in radio transmitters so they can all send and receive signal. You can set up to 4 groups of flashes in multiple channels, all of which you control a the touch of a button or turn of a dial. Another amazing thing about the Cactus V6's is that they come pre-loaded with Canon and Nikon profiles for many of their popular flashes. In this video, I'm using Nikon SB-800 flashes on Cactus V6's as receivers and able to control the power with the V6 on my camera. AMAZING. And control flash power to the Cactus RF60's as well. This video is chock full of killer tips and nuggets. I pop a lot of tips on the screen to help along with the learning process. Photography using continuous lights (LED) vs Studio Strobes - Pro's and Cons
Still life photography using LED's vs Studio Strobes. I now have 2 x 100 watt LED lights for both video and photography. This test is to show the relative powers and limitations when shooting still lifes with them vs my 600 watt second studio strobes. Not a scientific test by any stretch but a real life example. It's not all about the end result, i think this test showed me how much i enjoy using strobes, you just can't beat being able to overpower any light source, it really is hard to beat. My views are probably a bit controversial as i'm sure others will totally disagree. The 'what you see is what you get' of using continuous lights is fine but you just miss the magic of knowing what your going to get! That WOW of a client looking at the final image is all gone! your almost deskilling photography! Imagine setting up your lights so the image looks just so then your client gets out there iphone and snapping the scene... thier phone snap is going to look pretty darn good to them cheapening the final images!

LIVE Product Photography Lighting Workshop (Roundup)
Product Photography Workshop on Shooting Products with LEDs & screens. From iPhones to kettles, self-illuminating dials, LCD screens or LED lights are key components of many products nowadays and while many photographers find it a challenge, it’s actually quite simple. In this workshop, recorded live with Karl Taylor members interaction, I demonstrate how to photograph a voice recorder that has both self-illuminating buttons and an LCD screen. If you’ve ever wondered how to shoot products with existing continuous light (LED lights or an LCD screen) I’ll be going into detail about the effects various shutter speeds have when it comes to capturing existing continuous light and the importance of flash sync speeds. I’ll also be demonstrating useful post-production techniques for finalizing the shot. Do you want to inject some passion into your photography? Get help from an expert and a thriving community of like-minded photographers? Why Karl Taylor? Some photography educators just talk about it, others have to heavily retouch it, but Karl Taylor actually shoots and shows you great results straight out of the camera. Join Karl for our monthly live shows demonstrating the best photography techniques and participate with live Q&A!

Product Photography Tip – Using the wrong lighting setup
Hey there, Matt Reed here from Perth Product Photography. I have another tip for you… this one is about using the wrong lighting setup. This was a happy accident discovery a few years ago so I've stuck with it and it's led to some interesting new lighting techniques that I never would have found. In the studio here we do a really broad range of photography. We were photographing lots of food one day. Now with food photography, you typically fairly heavily back-light the photo and I thought, hmmm, interesting… we haven't really done a lot of back-lighting with other types of photos we take. We also do a lot of commercial business portraits, and so I thought, what if I lit a person's head like I would a pizza. This is a crazy thing to say I know, but bear with me. It was a pretty fascinating experiment and it has led to some interesting experimentation. So here is where it gets a little more practical. We are often photographing a number of different types of products in the studio. You might do the same at home, especially if you're trying to build up a portfolio or just trying to practice with different products. Now here's the trap…. As we get more competent, we start to get a bit of an idea about how a product should be lit. Like, here's a wine bottle, it should be lit this kind of way. Here's a plate of food, it should be lit this kind of way. Here's a sneaker, this is how it should be lit. Typically, what we found was you put the sneaker on the table, you start with how you think it should be lit, setup the lights and then you take the photo. After the first shot, refine the light until it’s perfected. Then the next photo might be a bottle of wine. So clearly you’re not going to light a bottle like a sneaker, so you change the lighting setup, get the setup to a point where you think it should be a good place to start for a bottle, and then start from there. What we started doing is whenever we've got a lighting setup for a particular product, when switching to a different product, before automatically changing the lighting to how we think it should be, we take a shot with that exact same wrong setup. Now sometimes the photo might look completely rubbish, so clearly it's the wrong setup. Change it up and move on. However, often it will either surprise you and actually look really nice, or in more cases there might be one particular little reflection or effect that's caused by a light in a certain position that you never would have thought to put there. Excellent! So you keep that light which is giving you that cool effect and then start improving the other areas of the product so they look their best. So even as you get competent, resist the urge to get too predetermined about how the lighting setup should be in theory. By taking a quick shot using the setup from your last project shot, you'll probably stumble across some pretty happy accidents. Over time, this will build out your skillset and give you much more experience in more intricate lighting setups. Try it and please let me know if you stumble across any weird and wonderful unexpected results. Look forward to hearing from you Cheers Matt SUBSCRIBE FOR OTHER VIDEO TIPS... https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=PerthproductphotographyAu VIEW OUR PORTFOLIO AND WORK... http://www.perthproductphotography.com.au LET'S CONNECT... Cheap LED Lighting for Video and Photography
Cheap LED Lighting for Video and Photography I found a cost-effective way of setting up cheap LED lighting for video and photography. I purchased the LED bulbs from Home Depot and my lighting kits of various kids that I purchased from Amazon. I also have one Neewer LED video light which I also use for photography lights. Below is a video I created that details my LED photography lighting and how I also use the same LED's for video lighting. Typically I have found LED lighting for photography and video very expensive. This set up that I've created for myself did not cost me that much money; approximately $200 - $300. Although this is not expensive photo studio equipment or "Steven Spielberg" caliber video equipment, this is a great way to light your subject during a shoot. ________________________ Lighting Gear Links: ________________________ NEEWER 160 LED CN-160 Video Light: http://amzn.to/2rCsDKx Cree 18-Watt (100W) Daylight (5000K) LED A21 Light Bulb: (I found these cheaper at Home Depot) http://amzn.to/2sKNKdk Philips 12 -watt A19 LED Household Daylight Light Bulb, Dimmable: (I couldn't find these bulbs again at any hardware store near my area) http://amzn.to/2rrKX4T LimoStudio-Photography Photo Portrait Studio 600W Day Light Umbrella Continuous Lighting Kit: http://amzn.to/2rCJzR4 Fancierstudio Dragonpad Strobist Flash Bracket Swivel Bracket: http://amzn.to/2sKGv51 Joby BH1 Ball Head with Bubble Level: http://amzn.to/2rrBZEs CowboyStudio Set of Two 7 feet Photography Light Stands with Cases: http://amzn.to/2rCJvki Gary Fong Lightbulb Adapter Kit with AC Power Plug: http://amzn.to/2rCSnGD --------------------------- Camera Gear: --------------------------- Sony A7II: http://amzn.to/2jDsgdz Sony RX100 III: http://amzn.to/2iPjlkW Sony A6000: http://amzn.to/2jEh2VJ Sony 24-70 F4 Lens: http://amzn.to/2iPgA2U Sony 16-35 F4 Lens: http://amzn.to/2lC0Z9S Sony 10-18 F4 Lens: http://amzn.to/2k5A3Ob Rode VideoMic Pro: http://amzn.to/2jRfwNH Asus G750 Laptop: http://amzn.to/2mJGTuj Yongnuo LED Video Light: http://amzn.to/2noju1q Editing Software: Adobe Premiere CC 2017 http://adobe.com _____________________ Social Media Links: _____________________ TWITTER: http://Twitter.com/amenreminisce INSTAGRAM: http://instagram.com/amenpanesar WEBSITE: http://www.amenpanesar.com SNAPCHAT: amenpanesar FACEBOOK: http://facebook.com/amendippanesar

Do you believe it? $30 DIY LED Lighting for Studio Photography
I am creating a set of video tutorials to help those photographers who are just getting started in studio still photography, those that do not have fancy and expensive studio strobes, soft-boxes and other seems-to-be-required equipment. More free courses and tips: https://www.photigy.com/free-photography-courses/ This is the first video, where I show how easy and useful $30 LED lights can be for a studio photographer. The concept is not new, and many Photigy photographers shared awesome shots created without any professional equipment (just look at what was posted on Photigy FB group). But I continue to see how fellow photographers struggle to get acceptable still life shots using speedlites, and I am sure what I've demonstrated here in this video will help them a lot. This is the first video. There's more to come! Very soon we are going to release a program on Photigy, aimed at beginners in studio photography, and you can be among the first to receive the new lessons. Photigy is the interactive school of photography, retouching and CGI. Aperous 17x17" Photo Studio Light Box Tent Kit REVIEW
Product link: http://amzn.to/1SKC3Wa Freshknot Bow: https://www.etsy.com/shop/freshKnot - Will takes about 20-30 minutes first time to install, instruction is a bit hazy. - Can take it apart and store everything in a small carrying bag for travel, will takes 10-15 to setup again once you're use to the process. - LED lights are bright and there's only on/off switch and no dim control - Velco works well but is annoying to open. Having magnetic door to quickly open and close would been great! - Produce some great picture, see my video for some examples. Keep in mind it's design to take stock picture of small item and from my video you can kind of gaze an idea of how big of a product you can fit inside. The wife use it for her bow ties (freshknot bowtie) and it works very well. Please LIKE this video if you found it useful. It will greatly help me. SUBSCRIBE to see future review videos :).
