Fibre Channel vs Ethernet

07:35
FC or Ethernet, which is best for storage? For net new implementations, the points on each side could be debated but for 60%-80% of the market that already has FC embedded, it is hard to justify a switch to Ethernet. In fact, as we discussed in our video, "Chalk Talk Video -- The Software Defined Data Center Needs Next Generation Storage Networks", there are many compelling reasons to not only stay with Fibre Channel but to also expand its use throughout the data center. In this video, we chalk-talk this topic with Brocade's VP of Product Marketing Scott Shimomura and Storage Switzerland Lead Analyst George Crump.

Why 10 Gigabit Ethernet? (Introducing 10 gigabit)

12:46
Part 2 is already live here: http://youtu.be/EUaIQYZPZmo Full Article: https://teksyndicate.com/videos/10-gigabit-ethernet-lets-get-serious-2-part This video is just a 15 minute introduction to 10 gigabit ethernet and where it is used effectively (hint: it has nothing to do with your internet connection). 10 gigabit, for now at least, works a little differently than gigabit. It's not quite the same upgrade as going from 100 megabit to 1 gigabit, but it is similar in a lot of ways. In this video we want to indtroduce you to 10 gigabit ethernet and introduce some hardware from Intel, Marvell and Netgear that operates at 10 gigabit. We'll also take a quick look at SFP+/fiberoptic 10 gigabit ethernet, and the ASRock X99 WS motherboard that has built-in Intel 10 gigabit adapters. 10 gig ethernet is so fast that most computers just can't push 10 gigabits of traffic through a single queue; today it is like it was when gigabit ethernet first came out. We have a lot of content coming up for 10 gigabit and this video is a good introduction if you are familiar with networking concepts and have at least a basic understanding of how networks are put together. We mention a lot of topics that will be making an appearance in the future, and we will talk about why 10 gigabit "works differently" right now than gigabit ethernet. This video will help organize the videos we're going to post to our other channels and we will provide a reference back to this video that provides an overview of 10 gigabit and what it means for us in general terms. If you are completely lost, check out the Home Server 101 video below; we'll have an update to that video in a few months. Once you're hooked on having a (home) server to do your bidding, the value here will be more apparently. How to Brand Sand - 10 Radical Marketing Action Items to Implement to Succeed at Branding a Product

32:16
Building a Brand without big budgets, why it works. Ten Pragmatics rules you can use in building your brand without resources: 1. The CEO must own the marketing function. The CEO can never delegate marketing responsibility. The CEO must take ownership of marketing by example to the organization to be an effective Radical Marketing professional. 2. The CEO must not allow layers of marketing to evolve between the organization and the customer market. Marketing departments should remain smaller versus larger or even flat to become a effective as a Radical Marketer. 3. Radical marketers have the advantage of face to face interaction with customers on a direct basis. Marketing on a Radical basis need to be in direct face contact with those who matter the most and that is customer. 4. Radical marketers prefer techniques that are not mainstream market research rather they often check market research than embrace it without caution. 5. To be effective at Radical Marketing only missionaries who are passionate can be hired to accept the role of marketing, passion is the key attribute to have in the organization role of marketing. 6. Customers are at the core so Radical Marketers should respect and love the customer as an individual. Customers are the reason a company is successful. 7. Finding a Community of users or consumers is the first step to be a Radical Marketer. Customers should be able to think for themselves and the brand unifies the community. 8. The marketing campaign needs to often be re-mixed. Target marketing in short ad campaigns goes a long way without a larger budget. 9. Common sense should be celebrated so as to create unique and different ideas on how to market to the community of consumers. Radical Marketing desires the community of users to be loyal to the brand. 10. Brand integrity is foremost for a Radical Marketer. Quality of the brand is where the eyes of a radical marketer will be focused on so they can be true to the brand first and foremost. What is CONVERGED NETWORK ADAPTER? What does CONVERGED NETWORK ADAPTER mean?

What is CONVERGED NETWORK ADAPTER? What does CONVERGED NETWORK ADAPTER mean? CONVERGED NETWORK ADAPTER meaning - CONVERGED NETWORK ADAPTER definition - CONVERGED NETWORK ADAPTER explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ A converged network adapter (CNA), also called a converged network interface controller (C-NIC), is a computer input/output device that combines the functionality of a host bus adapter (HBA) with a network interface controller (NIC). In other words, it "converges" access to, respectively, a storage area network and a general-purpose computer network. Some products were marketed around 2005 with the term C-NIC which combined iSCSI storage functionality with Gigabit Ethernet. Later products used the marketing term converged network adapter (CNA), combining Fibre Channel over Ethernet with 10 Gigabit Ethernet, for example. Brocade Communications Systems offers two types of CNAs, with PCI Express generation 2.0 interfaces. The only difference between the two models are the number of interfaces on the cards: one or two. The two port model will allow connection to two different switches to create a redundant configuration without having to use two PCI slots. In 2009 Broadcom entered the CNA market. Broadcom offers their CNAs under their own brand name but also sell the application-specific integrated circuits and other related components to others. Their intended customers are the larger builders of server systems such as Dell and HP. These vendors can then include the ten Gigabit CNA with their servers: as embedded interface on the motherboard (LOM or LAN on motherboard), via a mezzanine card in blade servers or as PCI extension-card. Emulex offers CNAs under the Emulex brand name as the OneConnect ten Gigabit series of dual port optical and copper adapters. They also OEM their adapters for Cisco, Dell, EMC, Fujitsu, HDS, HP, IBM and NetApp. QLogic offers CNAs via their QLogic 8200 & 8300 series Converged Network Adapters. They offer single and dual port PCI cards with copper or optical fibre interfaces. QLogic CNAs are available under the QLogic brandname and as OEM cards. The QME CNA and drivers were supported by Citrix, NetApp, EMC and IBM. HP claims that their BL460c G7 was the first blade server that offers FCoE via a LOM (LAN on motherboard) instead of using a PCI slot or mezzanine card. Dell uses the QLogic 8100 series in their PowerEdge servers. For the M-series, blade-servers for the M1000e enclosure a specially made dual-port mezzanine card QME8142 is designed. For the normal tower- and rackservers Dell offers an OEM version of the standard QME 8152. Cisco Systems offered Fibre Channel over Ethernet in their Unified Computing System product line via Virtual Interface Cards (VICs). These cards make it possible to create multiple virtual HBAs or NICs within each physical VIC.

Celebrating 40 Years of Ethernet Innovation - Session 3

01:14:22
Wednesday 22nd May 2013 Celebrating 40 years of Ethernet Innovation -- Session 3 Session #3: The Status of Ethernet Today "In future there will be one universal language -- not English, not Mandarin, but Ethernet" according to Nan Chen, president, MEF. As we approach that reality, connecting both people and machines, it is time to take stock and ask "where are we now?" and "what is the next step?" Panellists: Sachin Gupta, Snr. Director, Enterprise Networking Group, Cisco; Arpit Joshipura, Vice President of Product Marketing, Dell; Mike Banic, VP Marketing, HP Networking; Steve Collen, VP of enterprise marketing Juniper Panel 3a. Ethernet in enterprise networking Introduced and Chaired by Rohit Mehra, Vice President, Network Infrastructure, IDC Ethernet has proved to be the answer, but can we clarify the question? A panel of CIOs and senior execs from industry leaders spells out the key challenges facing enterprise IT today -- including virtualization, BYOD, management and security. Is technology serving business needs, or is the tail wagging the dog? Our panel clarifies the way forward, and challenges Ethernet designers to evolve solutions -- as they have consistently managed in the past. Panel 3b. Ethernet in carrier networks Introduced and Chaired by Tam Dell'Oro, Founder & President, Dell'Oro Group In this panel, senior executives from service providers and carrier solution vendors discuss the relatively recent role of Ethernet in bridging the "telechasm" separating the LAN and WAN. As Ethernet approaches the universal language predicted by Nan Chen, it looks less and less like a networking technology, and more and more like a service offering -- with serious implications for the carrier market. Our panel needs to identify the critical issues and lay down a new road map for the way forward. Panellists: Howard Charney, Senior Vice President, Office of the President, Cisco; Said Ouissal, Vice President, Juniper ; Mark Durrett, Director, Marketing, Overture; James Walker, Vice President, Managed Network Services, TATA Communications ; Ms Yali Z Liu, Executive Director, Product Technology, Verizon

New Frontiers in C-RAN Fronthaul: to CPRI, or to not CPRI?

01:07:48
For more webinars, click here: https://technology.ihs.com/Events OVERVIEW Fronthaul has a fundamental role in the development of radio access networks (RANs), from centralized RANs to cloud RANs and beyond, but what are the challenges of moving to such C-RANs? And while vendors have leaned toward the Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) standard for fronthaul connections, CPRI-based links may not be the right fit as the 5G network of cloud-optimized RAN evolves. How does CPRI relate to fronthaul technologies such as WDM and optical Ethernet; and what alternative standards are emerging? How can fronthaul adapt to the demands of co-existing 4G and 5G networks; and what impact do technology choices have on deployment applications and new service opportunities? WHO SHOULD ATTEND Mobile operators; fixed-line operators; wholesale transport service providers; financial and industry analysts and the media are also encouraged to attend. KEY TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION - Migrating to C-RAN architecture: requirements, challenges and roadmap - Evolving fronthaul performance criteria: limitations of CPRI - 5G fronthaul technologies: WDM and Optical Ethernet capabilities and standards - Scaling and cloud-optimizing transport networks for the future - C-RAN deployment applications - Answers to audience questions during live Q&A SPEAKERS - Richard Webb, Research Director, Mobile Backhaul and Small Cells, IHS Markit - Stuart Whitehead, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Anritsu Corporation - Joe Mocerino, Principal Solutions Architect, Optical Networking, Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. - Hector Menendez, Product Marketing Manager, IP/Optical Networks, Nokia - Allen Tatara, Manager, Webinar Events, IHS Markit (Moderator)

Nokia: Optical and wireless options for fronthaul and midhaul

26:01
A conversation with Jim Guillet, Product Marketing, Nokia Small cells, C-RAN and, eventually, 5G set new requirements on transport – and in turn they drive the adoption of new technologies and solutions. In this discussion with Jim Guillet, Product Marketing at Nokia we discussed how fronthaul is evolving and the emergence of midhaul. Jim said “fronthaul isn’t new. It’s been around for many years. What’s changed is its primary purpose. Traditionally the baseband units have been distributed at the cell sites, and now fronthaul is being used primarily to have them centralized – all located in central locations – so now they can control multiple radio heads.” As we move to 5G, “we see the emergence of a transport fabric that interconnects everyone and everything. This fabric comprises multiple layers of optical wavelengths, microwave links, and packetization on top of that, with Ethernet and IP on top of that. Wide area networks have long been multi-layered. That will continue. It gives the option to carry the traffic and switch or route the traffic at the appropriate level using whichever medium you need. The trick in all this is to manage that with a unified environment,” Jim added. As we move forward, Jim expects that CPRI, the interface that is prevalent in fronthaul today, will be replaced by Ethernet: “The beautiful thing about Ethernet is that it not only opens up the possibility of mobile operators doing the backhaul or the midhaul themselves, but you can now take advantage of Ethernet transport providers and other capabilities.”
