Hi, my name is Jonathan Globerson. I'm a professional industrial designer. I'm also the CEO of GloberDesign, a product development company located in North Miami Beach in Florida. I want to tell you about the simple steps that you need to take in order to launch a new product into the market. The first thing to do is research. Do your research really good: locate your market; look who is your competition; how much are they selling their product for; what are their features; do they have any patents on it. Then you'll also do an additional patent search. That can either be done by yourself, or by a hired professional attorney or any other firm that can help you do that. Next, simply take a pen and paper and start sketching. Even if you're not the best sketcher in the world, it's fine; all you need to do is put your idea onto paper. Next, you need to create a 3D computer model. The way to do that is either hire a 3d computer artist or a 3D CAD draftsman and have them convert your beautiful sketch into a real 3D model. What they do with that? You can do with that various things. The first thing you can do with that is you can create a prototype. A prototype is the first sample of the actual product that you're having in mind. We can do it with various ways. Today we have 3D printers - they actually read a 3D computer model and they convert that into plastic parts that could be used and shown physically. The other thing that you can do with your 3D model is create patent drawings. These patent drawings you can apply for what's called a Provisional Application. That gives you 12 months of patent pending status. That's just enough time for you to start to pitch your investors, talk to buyers, talk to factories, and find out more details on how you can actually make your product come true. With the 3d computer model you also send that out to a factory, have them first sign for you what's called a Non-Disclosure Agreement, meaning anything that... information they receive, they keep it as a secret. With that you'll get real manufacturing pricing and then you can make your own business plan. So, now you know your manufacturing pricing, you can figure out what's going to wholesale for, and what is going to be the retail price. Last, start making some marketing materials. Do a sales sheet, a brochure about your product; maybe even a kickstarter campaign, or maybe just a promotional video, just so you could show people what do you have in mind and try to get more attraction. This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. It can be quite a challenge to find a manufacturer -- one you like working with and whose factory produces a quality product at a fair price. Here are some tips on how to navigate through the process of finding one, as well as how to optimize your relationship with your manufacturer so that you -- and your customers -- are happy. For more infor visit: http://www.focuspdm.com/ Step 1: Creating a Prototype Creating a working prototype or finding someone who can do it for you is the first step in the manufacturing process. During my early days, I was able to sew most of my prototypes. But as my product, Planecomfort, was refined and the components used and the skills necessary to create the product I envisioned moved beyond my sewing expertise, I knew I needed help. Searching online, I found a wonderful yet small cut-and-sew business in northern California called Left in Stitches. This relationship proved valuable to me in a number of ways. They not only helped refine my original prototype, but they offered many suggestions and ideas for making the product easier to manufacture. Many of these smaller domestic companies offer prototyping services that are invaluable to new entrepreneurs. Once you have a prototype, there is quality and design testing and tweaking. At each stage of development, and every time I received the newer version of my product, I washed, dried, pulled, stretched, zipped, unzipped, and put my product through the proverbial "ringer." Making sure your product will exceed your customers' expectations is a sure way to keep them coming back and referring your product to others. Ideally, you want to have a dozen or so finished prototypes. Manufacturers will want one or two samples sent to them as a reference to compare to the finished product their factory is making. I thought I would be able to use Left in Stitches for the long term, but due to logistical reasons and production costs, I had to find an overseas manufacturer. Moving your manufacturing operations overseas means you want large quantities (usually thousands) of the item you are producing. If you want hundreds of something, you may be better off working with a domestic manufacturer. Step 2: Finding a Manufacturer I located my overseas manufacturers through referrals, which provided me with an immediate level of comfort and confidence with these factories. One referral came from a fabric manufacturer. Most fabric manufacturers have relationships with product manufacturers. Another factory was referred to me by a marketing services company. This company manufactures both soft and hard goods and was happy to provide their contact with another business opportunity. Call domestic manufacturers and inquire about their overseas connections. Ask everyone you know if they know someone who manufactures the type of products you are creating. Search online for companies with products similar to yours and call them. Who do they use? How did they get started? My experience is that most people will want to help you. I found it was best to work with at least two different companies when trying to decide who will win your business. Who is easiest to work with? Who meets (or beats) your expectations? Is one more knowledgeable than the other? Having a comparison is essential to ensure you are getting a quality product at a fair price. There are two common ways you can deal with overseas manufacturing. You can find a broker or agent in the U.S. that represents the factory, or deal with a factory directly. Once you have determined who you might like to work with, you must check references on your contact and the factory. Some of the important questions to ask: Was the product made to specifications? What percentage of the shipment was defective? If there was a problem with the shipment, did the factory make restitution? Were deadlines met? If not, what did the factory offer to make amends? Is what was promised delivered? How is the quality of goods they produce? How long have you worked with this person and factory? How many orders have you placed? Is your contact easy to work with? Is he/she responsive to calls and emails? What type of projects does the factory excel in producing? Soft goods, hard goods? What types of companies do they normally work with? We will look into the relationship and difference between product life cycle management, project life cycle management and SDLC (Software Development Life cycle management) with a simple example in this video. First we will try to define, life cycle phases and major focus of each of these. Product management: Product life cycle management is the process of managing the entire life cycle of a product from inception, through engineering design, and manufacture, to service and disposal of manufactured products. Generally Product life cycle management has the following phases. Idea generation Idea Screening Business Analysis Product Development Test Marketing Commercialization Evaluate and refine Major focus of product life cycle management is, the features and functionalities of the product that it offers to the customers. Now we will look into Project management. As per Project management institute (PMI), Project can be defined as a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. the temporary indicates the project has a define start and end time. Project management can be defined as the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. As per PMI, project management has five process group or phases as follows. Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling Closing. The main focus of project management is, to ensure the deliverable are meeting the requirements. Let's move on to SDLC life cycle management. SDLC can be defined as a process for planning, developing, testing, and deploying an information system. SDLC management deals with this managing the process associated with SDLC to build the IT system. Generally it has following 5 phases and according to the selected methodology these phases may or may not overlap. Requirements gathering Design Development Testing, and Implementation Major focus of SDLC management is, to build the system according to the specifications. Let me connect the product, project, and SDLC life cycle with a simple example. Lets imagine a scenario where company XYZ wants to launch a new online web store that helps the merchants to sell their products online. As a first step The XYZ company will start with the initial process of product life cycle management, idea generation, idea screening and business analysis are been performed and business cases are produced to support the launch of the online store. Now the company will start a new project for developing and launching the site. At this stage, the first phase of the project Initiation will be kicked off and project charter, stake holder register will be created. At the time project planning phase, SDLC life cycle starts. Also during the project planning phase, Software Development Methodology (SDM) will be chosen to implement the SDLC process and the software development starts. Normally entire SDLC will be contained in planning, execution, monitor & control phases of project life cycle. I would like to mention one point here. we can't exactly define at what phases of project management life cycle, the SDLC process will fit in, as the SDLC process might or might not overlap based on the selected software development methodology. So here I made an assumption of water fall SDLC methodology is followed. System development and launching process will start either at the planning, or slightly before that, and go through the execution and finishes at the monitoring and control phase. At this stage, SDLC life cycle ends. Next phase of the project is the project closing phase where the required documents will be submitted and the project will get closed formally. Though the project is closed here, still the product life cycle continues here. Product evaluation and refining is a continuous process and the product will be evolved further based on the customers feed back or through some analysis. Lets say, the company wants to roll out a mobile version of the application to the market. At this point of time one more project will be started and will continue the same cycle as mentioned above. So in a nut shell, a product life cycle will have many project life cycles and SDLC will be a part of the project management life cycle.

Can you generate real revenues without having anything built? The answer is yes, and I personally believe that it’s the only way to do it. A couple weeks ago I was in San Francisco hosting my Sales Pipeline Intensive event for my SaaS Academy clients, and one of the speakers John (founder of five9.com, $1.2B saas company) echoed a similar sentiment... It was funny because we hadn’t connected prior to his talk. So I did some research on his latest company JetBridge.com, and it mentioned all the different areas they were innovating sales using AI/Machine Learning, and when he comes up, he just smiled and said “oh, all that’s bullshit” ???? It was all made up. :) Well, in his defense, at this point they did have a product in the outbound calling space that did have revenues and customers, but the rest was just positioning... .. to allow them to get customers and learn fast. And that’s what I want to teach you today as you continue on your journey building a software company (or any business for that matter). You don’t need to have it built before you sell it. And even better, if you don’t, I’ll show you a way you can get your future customers to finance its development... Watch this week’s video to learn the exact same structure that one of my coaching clients Ryan used to generate $200K for his first prototype that he pre-sold. When you build innovation there’s a few things you need to understand... one of the first is you can’t sell it to big, old, slow moving companies. You need to find innovative and early adopting companies... ... so I share a framework to make this easy called the Technology Adoption Curve. Also, once you have the idea, most founders will build it first then show it to customers. But what I recommend instead is to build a Clickable Prototype, design a Customer Advisory Board and then co-create it with them. Finally, if you want to ensure you get real commitment from your customers, then you’ll need to get them to throw down with some money. True “Customer Validation” doesn’t occur until there’s some kind of financial commitment made... ... without it, it’s just a bunch of nice people grin [email protected]*ng you. It's a sketch. A sketch that encapsulates the concept so perfectly... ... that it went viral. Frank Robinson -------- Frank Robinson coined the term "Minimum Viable Product" in 2001. The idea - at least at a superficial level - is simplicity itself: Get a version of the product in front of a customer early as possible. Not with the aim of generating early income - though that is no bad thing - but with the aim of LEARNING. The chances are that you've heard of Minimum Viable Product before today.. ... and that when you heard it, you immediate "got it". As Frank himself said: “When I first said ‘minimum viable product’ I never had to repeat myself. The words went viral right before my eyes.” BUT... Is it Viable ------- Just because something is easy to grasp, doesn't mean it's easy to do. It's not easy. Far from it. Here's the problem: We - development teams, lead developers, product owners... even business owners - usually have an idea of what the "ultimate" product might look like. Ask us to come up with a minimum version and we'll hack off a feature here and a feature there. What we end up with will certainly be MINIMAL: that's the easy part. But will it be VIABLE That's the tricky part. Enter Henrick Kniberg ----- A gentleman by the name of Henrick Kniberg captured the difference between the two perfectly in his (now viral) image: In the top line, we have minimal, but not viable (until we get the final step). In the bottom line, we have minimal AND viable every step of the way. In a recent blog post, Henrik said that he was surprised that his image went viral. I'm not surprised at all. I think it's genius. Before diving in. let's establish some ground rules for a "proper" MVP It's got to be Minimal It's got to be Viable And it's got to be a Prod... Actually No, it does not need to be a Product. (I'll be showing you a great example of a "non-product" in a minute or two.) Some have argued that the word "Product" in MVP is unhelpful. Steven Cohn has made a strong case for the word "Experiment". I agree. But for now let's stick with the "P" and temporarily re-define it to.... Pre-meditated. Meaning that the MVP must be a deliberate attempt to learn about the market. This rules out cases that look like MVPs in retrospect, but were really full products that - to everyone's surprise - developed into something big. Let's get going. No. 3 - Buffer ------ Buffer is a application that makes it easy to share content on social media. Here's what they put on the their site. A test, certainly. But it falls short of an MVP in my opinion. Their next test was better. They slotted this page in-between the other two pages. Now visitors to the website are not just saying "This is interesting" They're saying "I want to BUY this". Okay, there's nowhere to input your credit card details. But anyone who got this far was at least prepared to think about parting with their money. As co-founder Joel Gascoigne said: "After this result, I didn’t hesitate to start building the first minimal version of the real, functioning product." Minimal - certainly Viable - yes Pre-mediated - check Buffer's current valuation is something close to $400 million No. 2 - Dropbox ---- Dropbox, as I'm sure you know, is a file synchronisation service. Edit a file on your desktop... ... and seconds later its updated on all of your other devices. Rewind to the early days. The team - entirely composed of techies - had the basic synchronisation working. That was the easy bit. The hard bit was going to be to achieve the same trick on pretty well every platform: Mac, Windows, iPhone, etc. Given that the team was all techies, you'd have put money on them diving straight in. But CEO Drew Houston did something surprising. He made a video. The video - just three minutes long - demonstrated the synch process end to end. But it was more than just a demo: it was full of techie in-jokes... designed to appeal to early adopters. It worked like a charm In Drew's words: “It drove hundreds of thousands of people to the website. Our beta waiting list went from 5,000 people to 75,000 people literally overnight. It totally blew us away.” Minimal - Yes Viable - Not a product that could be used, but a product that could be demonstrated. Pre-Meditated - Yes Dropbox went on to do quite well. It's current value stands between $5 and $10 BILLION. No. 1 - Zappos ---- It's 1999. Co-founder Nick Swinmurn wanted to build an online store for shoes. But would people use it Here's how he went about finding out. He popped down to lis local shoe shops he went into the shops and... ... I sh!t you not... he PHOTOGRAPHED PAIRS OF SHOES! The photos were uploaded to a super-simple website. If someone clicked on the button to buy a pair Nick would pop down to the store and... BUY THE SHOES! Zero infrastructure. Zero inventory. Minimal - definitely Viable - This time it's not even up for discussion. Most definitely: real customers; real money changing hands; real shoes! Pre-meditated Check. Zappos went on to do quite well: it was acquired by Amazon in 2009 for a cool $1.2 billion. Your thoughts, please! ---- Buffer, Dropbox and Zappos. Three of my favourite MVPs. The 4 Business Growth Strategies To learn more, visit my website at http://www.antheahorvat.com/ So in this video, I want to share with you the four different business growth strategies you can choose to implement in your business. We call it the Ansoff model. So basically the choices for you are, if you want to grow your business, are you going to find more Betty and Bobs in order to sell your product or service to? We call this a market penetration strategy. The second choice that you have is a market development strategy. This is where you take your product or service and whoever you’re selling it to right now, you go and develop new markets in order to sell your products and services. Now, those markets could be new niches for you to go into, or they could be new geographical areas for you to move into. It doesn’t matter. We call that a market development strategy. The third option, the one that most of my entrepreneur clients like to pursue, is the product development strategy. Product development strategy involves developing new products and services for you to sell to clients that you already have. And the final one we call diversification. That’s a lot like starting a new business. It’s where you develop new products and services for new markets. So, which one should you choose for your business? I say to my clients, why don’t you think in a three-month block because three months right now is a really long time, and why don’t you focus on just one of those strategies? That’s right, just one of those strategies. Which one should you choose? Well, the place to start is to do a swat analysis on your business. Go through your strengths. Go through your weaknesses, then the things internal, the things that you can change in your business, the things that you do well, and the places in your business where you have little hold, the things that you don’t do quite so well. Go through your strengths and weaknesses. You want to have great clarity about your strengths in particular. The second thing you need to do is look outside of your business. Look at what’s happening in the world. Look at what’s happening in your marketplace. Look at what’s happening with your competitors. And look for opportunities. You want to match your strengths to the greatest opportunities available to you, and then pick which of those strategies is going to work best for you, and then focus. Focus, focus, focus! I know you’re an entrepreneur. I know you like to create, but I also know that you like to have money in the bank account. So the key to you is to pick the strategy that’s going to work the fastest for you. It might not be the most exciting right now, but it’s going to be the most profitable. So, choose your strategy and focus for the next three months. We recently hosted a webcast conversation between Lars Lofgren, Senior Director of Growth at I Will Teach You To Be Rich, and Elliot Susel, Faculty Member at Lean Startup Co., about implementing lean product development into your organization and how to choose the right value proposition. In Lars and Elliot’s conversation, they discuss: - How Lars moved the company from a rigid waterfall product development process to a more lean approach. - Why the most important part of the product development process is choosing the right value proposition. - How to choose the right value proposition through customer interviews, surveys, and AB testing. And much, much more… When Lars came on to I Will Teach You To Be Rich, the company was engaged in a waterfall approach to product development where they released a bunch of courses at once and hoped they’d make “a bunch of money,” he said. The process had some hits, but just as many misses, and he knew it was time to make some changes. As his role shifted from generating new leads to product development, he realized that it was important to drive new products to maintain the growth of the company but the process had to be significantly refined toward a lean approach. “I didn’t throw out the entire process,” he explained, “but I did throw out huge chunks of it. Now I’d say 80% of the cycle is completely different even than a year ago.”

Whilst there is no discounting the successes of enterprise organizations with multi-billion dollar annual revenues, they are typically existing today on legacy IT operations that put their future at risk. These risks can come from inefficient business operations run on legacy technology, poor customer experiences that are built around the technology and not the user, and slow-to-market products that are not even connected at the data level. Enterprises must take steps to adopt the modern methods that disruptors use to build successful products. These modern methods will vary depending on the business needs, but there are a few ideas that every enterprise should adopt - these include design thinking, agile software development, rapid prototyping, big data and artificial intelligence, site reliability engineering, and exploring the right programming language for the business need instead of sticking to the languages you have always used. But before enabling these methods to modernize their software engineering practices, there are certain organizational challenges standing in the way - from revamping development processes, preparing for management changes, and eliminating fear of failure. And finally during this episode, we will look what enterprise organizations need to be looking for from their partners to show them and teach them which specific modern methods enterprises should adopt to drive successful product development within a digital transformation. My background in Information Technology goes all the way back to 1981 where as a member of the United States Army I was a telecommunications specialist in the Signal Corps. Here I learned the cornerstones of our digital world, the importance of organization and the principals of leadership. During my tenure I was a technologies instructor and technical writer, the ultimate in business development as a recruiter. The highest award I received was the Legion of Merit for my technical expertise as a member of the Patriot Missile Battalion defending Jerusalem during First Gulf War. After my honorable discharge I designed electronic components for Escod Industries, was a staff writer for The Taylorsville Times and was a fiber optic field engineer for Siecor (now called Corning Cable). All the while I was working those jobs I was also programming websites. So my internet programming experience goes all the way back to writing pearl scripts to interact with an Access database. After my ‘portfolio’ of websites and clients was purchased by Computer Wise I began working for Bank of America where I built the application they still use today to track all their Real Estate Holdings. Once finished, a recruiter convinced me to relocate from North Carolina to New York City where I was employed by New York University to build NYUOnline.com. Once that was complete I was offered the lead programming position with Lawtrac, a position which I held for fifteen years and when the company was sold I had attained the title of Vice President of Product development. There I functioned not only as the primary developer, but was able to tap into my marketing skills I obtained as a recruiter, the networking knowledge from my Signal Corps days, my technical writing capabilities and my leadership competencies. I was involved with every aspect of the company. I helped to build that company from the brink of bankruptcy in 2001 to one which was considered a market leader. Our clientele represented a number of industries including retail, defense, manufacturing and financial. I developed a personal working relationship with all of them allowing me to provide the marketing team an easy product to sell, the support team a product that was easy to use and troubleshoot and the custom programming team a flexible product which they could easily attach. We passed every security audit, operated internationally handling languages and currencies, I even introduced the first enterprise-wide document management system as a part of the product in 2003.

I was hired by a big oil company to lead a new project with dozens of developers to build a product that would be used by every employee in the company. No pressure, right? On the first day, the hiring manager realized I was in way over my head and pulled me aside to tell me I had 2 weeks to “figure things out”. Umm… ok? I had no clue what that meant... but the stakes were clear, and I couldn’t lose this project. I hadn’t worked in 2 months and if I failed, it meant moving back in with my parents. In this week’s video I share the journey of how I went from a newbie leader on the verge of being forced onto my mother’s couch… … to someone who successfully managed a multi-million dollar project for 2 years. The best way for me to show you the difference is by using a real world example... ... so this week I use our new set design (it’s still not finished - it’s an iteration away but watch the video above to check it out). I worked with my buddy Tim to build it out and let's just say there were some hiccups. So in many ways this video is for him... a primer on how to manage projects with a bend on software (my world)!
