Planing a boat is a skill that all boaters must be familiar with. Within this video, I explain how to make a boat plane. It's very simple to do and is just a matter of starting from idle with the trim all of the way down. As speed is gained, the bow ("front of the boat") will rise. Slowly begin to trim up, as speed is gained and the boat will level out. After a bit of practice, it will become second nature just like driving a car. Many beginners may feel like the boat is going to fall over backwards when the boat's front end starts to rise. This is definitely not the case, unless of course someone forgot to put the boat's drain plug back in =) I filmed this video in 1080P HD with a Panasonic Lumix TS3 camera. Please feel free to check out all of my boating videos, by clicking the playlist link below. IrixGuy's Boating Playlist - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBB0783A125680F11&feature=view_all

The video shows a high-speed planing boat accelerating from rest to a constant forward speed in head seas. The boat is permitted to have four degrees of freedom, including sway, heave, roll, and pitch. The Numerical Flow Analysis (NFA) code has been used to perform the simulation on the Cray XE6 at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) supercomputing center. NFA uses a Cartesian-grid formulation to solve the Navier-Stokes equations with a volume-of-fluid method to track the free-surface interface. An implicit sub-grid-scale turbulence model is used to model turbulence. The simulation uses 805 million grid cells and is run using 3,072 processors for 70,000 time steps. The simulation uses 190 wall-clock hours. The video shows a view of the boat looking upward. The highest pressures occur along the spray root when the boat slams into the waves. Spray is shed along the sides of the boat. The water separates cleanly from the boat's transom, which is dry as a result. Waves break at the rooster tail behind the boat and along the edges of the Kelvin wake. The ambient waves form spilling breakers toward the back of the computational domain. The greatest amount of wave breaking and spray generation occurs when the boat slams into the waves. During slamming events, the personnel on high-speed planing boats are subjected to very high accelerations that can lead to debilitating injuries. We are very grateful to Dr. Michael Stephens, Chris Lewis, Richard Walters, Miguel Valenciano, and Michael Wissmann from the Data Analysis Assessment Center (DAAC) at the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program for making the animations. Check them out. The Office of Naval Research funds our research. Our program sponsors are Dr. Steven Russell, Dr. Thomas Fu, Dr. Patrick Purtell, Dr. Paul Hess, Dr. Robert Brizzolara, Dr. Ronald Joslin, and Dr. Thomas Drake. Dr. Douglas Dommermuth, Thomas O'Shea, Dr. Kyle Brucker, Lucas Rhymes, and Donald Wyatt from Science Applications International Corporation develop NFA. We are grateful to Dr. John Levesque at the Cray Supercomputing Center of Excellence who improved the MPI communication.

You will be awed by the canyon at the base of the Hoover Dam – and the best view and adventure is to be had by boat. Make our day! Give us a thumbs-up, SUBSCRIBE, COMMENT, and/or SHARE this video. Are we asking TOO much? _____________________________________ ABOUT LAKE MEADE NATIONAL RECREATION AREA RIVER TRAIL Black Canyon - steep, rugged and wonderfully desolate - winds south from the Hoover Dam nearly a dozen miles to Willow Beach Marina. There is no better way to experience the area than by kayaking (you must be in incredible shape to do the long journey upstream to the dam) or motor boating. You can rent motorboats for a reasonable price at Willow Marina and head upstream and back (this is what we did). Or you can arrange a tour and go by raft or kayak which traverse downstream only (much easier) leaving from the base of the Hoover Dam and ending at the Marina. Here are some of the places you will stop and visit along the way. Sauna Cave: Just a few hundred yards downriver from the Hoover Dam, you make the first of a handful of stops to explore interesting parts of the canyon. As you scramble up the river bank, aided by a rope that serves as a hand hold, engineers dug several test tunnels into canyon walls throughout the area in the 1920s as part of a geological survey to find the best site to build the dam. Then you enter a tunnel, not quite 6 feet high and only a few feet wide. It goes back only a few dozen yards. But it seems like more - a lot more - as you slosh, slightly stooped, through the hot, ankle-deep water that flows out of the tunnel. It can be 100 degrees in the tunnel, with 100 percent humidity. The hot water comes from just one of the hundreds of geothermal springs in the area Goldstrike Canyon: A little farther downriver you stop at Goldstrike Canyon, whose walls soar hundreds of feet into the sky. A rivulet of hot water, outflow from more hot springs, runs down the canyon to the river. Algal colonies have tinted some of the pools in the canyon a rich green. Others are a garish orange. Bighorn sheep: As you float downriver, you notice hawks drifting in the thermals high above, and you hear the characteristic calls of canyon wrens. You may even spot ospreys and great blue herons. Chances are good you'll see bighorn sheep, singly or in small groups, scrambling up or down the canyon walls. Hot springs: You can pull over on a large sandy beach for a hike up to Arizona Hot Springs. You walk into a fairly narrow canyon to a rusty ladder. You clamber up about a dozen rungs and continue through the upper canyon, which narrows to just 5 to 8 feet wide. Before long, you come to a series of pools. The knee-deep, crystal-clear water feels close to scalding when you first step in. As you ascend, though, you find that the water in each pool is hotter than the one before it. Emerald Cave: Next you will see a hollow on the left bank. Although Emerald Cave is only a couple dozen feet deep, the water catches the light in such a way that it shimmers with a luminous, almost incandescent, green. That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here in this beautiful National Park Service unit! _________________________________ ABOUT THIS CHANNEL: We are Bob and Betty (married over 40 years) and we love to travel on a budget (48+ countries, 46 states, and 236 National Parks – but who’s counting). My recommendation is to watch the weather and if you don't have to go out in big waves, don't go...but if you do, here are some tips for you! 1.) Make sure to ALWAYS wear a PFD (Onyx A24 IMPULSE Lifejacket: https://goo.gl/Xb0f8W) 2.) ALWAYS wear your kill switch 3.) Make sure your bilge pump works 4.) Make sure to lock down your gear so it doesn't get beat up/ruined 5.) Trim 1/4 way up, hydraulic jackplate down and run under a controlled speed 6.) Run the troughs when possible and try to run into the wind (wind blowing at your face) if you're able - this gives you better boat control. 7.) When running with the wind at your back, directly into the waves, slow down and maintain control over the boat 8.) DON'T RUSH - DRIVE CONTROLLED, RELAXED AND TAKE YOUR TIME Be safe on the water folks! Xochimilco is a UNCESCO World Heritage Site and a special part of Mexico City's pre-Hispanic past. It's a canal system that was used throughout the valley which includes 170 kilometres of canals! Today you can visit and ride on a gondola-like boat called a trajinera which will take you on a ride around. There are also special floating gardens and lots of other boats selling food, souvenirs, and shuttling around mariachi bands who will play for you. We took the public collectivo boat for only twenty pesos whereas a trajinera costs minimum 350 pesos. We thought this was a good hack! If you're planning to visit Xochimilco, make sure to watch this video for a tip about which launch point to go to as well! This was a fun place to spend the morning and I loved seeing all the brightly coloured boats. ABOUT ME: I'm travelling around the world as a nomad. “I do not know much about gods; but I think that the river Is a strong brown god—sullen, untamed and intractable” - “Dry Salvages”, T.S. Eliot Long before Wes Modes began planning a journey down the Mississippi, he started building a traditional barge-bottom houseboat in a California backyard out of rustic reclaimed materials (e.g. old fences and chicken coops). Once his shantyboat was complete he hatched a plan to transport it across the country from Santa Cruz to Minnesota to begin a “Huck-Finn style” journey down the iconic American river. Following in the footsteps of Harlan and Anna Hubbard, whose eight-year journey down the Mississippi and Ohio rivers was chronicled in Harlan’s book “Shantytown”, Modes launched his own float 70 years later. His “Secret History of American River People” is part personal adventure and part research project, collecting stories of “river people” along the banks. Complete with lofted bed, compost toilet and full-kitchen (propane-powered camp stove and plumbed sink), his 10-by-8-foot houseboat cabin serves as both floating home and mobile office for his summertime sojourns. After two summers on the Mississippi recording stories for his “Secret History of American River People”, Modes (along with first mate Lauren Benz) set out to tackle the 652-mile Tennessee River from Knoxville to Paducah, Kentucky. We caught up with him in Knoxville, which he pointed out is also the setting for Cormac McCarthy’s semi-autobiographical shantyboat novel “Suttree”. Nearly everywhere he goes, Modes has discovered that the times of shantyboat living have largely disappeared. “I just finished an interview with somebody,” he explained from Volunteer Landing in Knoxville. “He was saying when he was a kid growing up in the sixties there were people living along the banks of some of the creeks and the river, but by the mid-to-late seventies those people were all gone. And by the eighties they had renewed the riverfront and by the nineties... all those people who used to live along the rivers in little homemade shacks and shanty boats were instead displaced.” Modes uses crowdfunding to help pay for his trips where he hopes to tell the stories of people who don’t usually make the history books. “I think that’s kind of like this idea of postmodern history in which you’re examining the little tales of people, the tales of you and I, the relationships in our lives, and the adventures we’d had and the hardships we’ve endured. Those are a form of history that is just as valid and just as legitimate as history with a capital H: history that makes the dominant narrative of the people who generally are the victors and the people who win and the people who write the history books.“ Secret History of American River People: http://peoplesriverhistory.us/ Wes’ crowdfunding for 2017: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1245766964/a-secret-history-sacramento-river-expedition Original story: https://faircompanies.com/videos/how-shantyboats-down-the-mississippi-helped-build-character/

7 days, 629 miles, 3 skis, 1 22' Bay boat! A years worth of planning has paid off, it was an adventure of a lifetime! 10 hour drive from Pace, FL to Boynton Beach. Left Boynton Beach inlet at daylight, made West End in 2 hours 20 minutes. After that, things got interesting...one of the skis started taking on water, racks crumbled under the harsh conditions, ran aground, lost gas cans, and ran out of gas. Finally made it there after 12 hours. The week was amazing! Due to poor weather conditions forecasted for our return trip, we decided to leave a day early and break it into 2 days. Left Treasure Cay at Daylight on Friday and had 4-5 footers for 9.5 hours and finally arrived at Freeport, Bahamas where we would stay the night and fuel for the next morning crossing. The boat took some damage. The center console and T-top came loose and we had to strap each corner of the T-Top to cleats to keep the center console from coming completely loose. As daylight came the morning of the crossing, we left the inlet to see 7-9 foot rollers, which proved to result in another long day. A long day it was, 9 hours to cross. Windburn and tired but we made it!

We went for an AMAZING boat cruise off the coast of Aruba. The cruise was called Mi Dushi and we went to a few different spots around the island and met some awesome people. The boat tour included lunch and an open bar throughout the trip as well as a whole bunch of snorkeling at a few places. The best part was going to the sunken German ship from WWII which was quite an experience. The current was pretty strong in the ocean making some of the footage a bit shaky so our apologies for that. As always, thank you so much for watching! Mac & Chels ----------------------------- Who are we? Mac & Chelsea - travelers who plan to visit every country in the world. A Yakatabune is a cruise boat where you can enjoy a wonderful dinner. These boats have a long history. That’s why the interior and food are Japanese style. We went on a cruise with “Shinagawa Funasei”, which is located at Shinagawa (15 min on foot from Shinagawa station Konan exit). The scenery of Tokyo seen on a cruise going around Tokyo Bay and Sumida River is exceptional. Thanks to the staff's efforts, we had so much fun also with the other groups on the boat. The Japanese dinner was great. We especially enjoyed the fresh sashimi (that was served on a small wooden boat) and the piping hot tempura! A cruise on a Yakatabune is something special that you will always remember. When you come to Japan, you have to see it for yourself! ------------------------------------------------------------------ For more travel tips, please visit our HP: http://visit-minato-city.com
