How to Secure Erase A SSD

09:58
How to Secure Erase A SSD In this video I will show you how to securely wipe your solid state drive, these work in a different way to mechanical hard drives, so we will be using parted magic to format and erase any data on that SSD. You should only do this if you have to and you should not use programs like DBAN or file shredder software to overwrite data on your SSD. Instead we will be using secure erase witch uses trim command to overwrite data on the SSD. Some SSD manufacturers have software that will wipe the data from a drive. But in this example, we will be using Parted Magic. Step 1: Create the Parted Magic bootable media. Step 2: Boot to Parted Magic, You will need to change your boot order to USB drive. Select Erase Disk on the Desktop. Step 3: Select "Internal: Secure Erase Tab” Then select ATA Secure Erase". Step 4: Select the SSD you want to erase, Select Secure and then click the Continue button. Step 5: If SSD drive is "frozen," click the Sleep button to put your PC to sleep. Step 6: Click I Allow this utility to erase the listed drive and click Start Erase. Step 7: Once the secure erase is completed, click Close and Restart Computer. That's it You just securely erase the data on your SSD Solid State Drive. Important: If you are selling the computer or disposing of the computer, I would recommend you remove the drive to be 100% sure, you can destroy it or keep it. If you have a Samsung SSD, it does come with Samsung Magician Secure Erase software. Need help with computer problems? join my forum. http://www.briteccomputers.co.uk/forum

Parted Magic: Bootable File Recovery / Diagnostics Disk

04:32
This is the fifth in a series covering live cd's. You may also have heard them referred to as rescue disks or bootable disks. Live cd's are very useful to technicians who are working on a computer that will not boot into Windows, or when they are working on a computer that is so badly infected with viruses that a typical antivirus can't remove them effectively. Live cd's are also great for data recovery, password recovery and resets and diagnostics as well. If this video helped you, please like. Subscribe to receive updates on newly released videos. I would suggest downloading the ISO image, burning it to disk, and playing around with the program to learn it's features and capabilities. If you are having trouble or don't know how to burn an ISO to disk, please see my video on Imgburn. Thank you for watching. Have a great day !!! How to wipe (secure erase) SSD with bootable USB?

05:36
Do you want to wipe (Secure Erase) clean your Solid State Drive (SSD) before selling or giving to others or for some other personal use? This video guides you through step by step instructions for the same. Tools Used: 1) Rufus (https://rufus.ie/en_IE.html) 2) GParted-Live(https://gparted.org/livecd.php) Please download the correct version! 64-bit: https://downloads.sourceforge.net/gparted/gparted-live-0.33.0-1-amd64.iso 32-bit: https://downloads.sourceforge.net/gparted/gparted-live-0.33.0-1-i686.iso The method worked for SAMSUNG mSATA SSD - MZ-MPC256D in a Dell XPS 12... If it didn't work for you leave comments below.. I couldn't find a similar source online.. So after sorting it out myself, I decided to make one to help others.. Caution!!! Please back up your data b4!!! 1) Download Rufus... https://rufus.ie/en_IE.html 2) Download gparted-Live (https://gparted.org/livecd.php) Please download the correct version! 64-bit: https://downloads.sourceforge.net/gparted/gparted-live-0.33.0-1-amd64.iso 32-bit: https://downloads.sourceforge.net/gparted/gparted-live-0.33.0-1-i686.iso 3) Rufus 2.9.9 used to show a demo. You could use some other bootable USB maker software. 4) Prepare your USB to have bootable GParted-live in it.. Wait for it to complete.. Close once it is done... 5) Safely remove the flash drive and insert it in the PC where the SSD is.. If it is the same PC then plug it in and restart to boot from the flash drive.. You may need to change the bios setting to make the PC bootable from the flash drive... I am using a DELL-XPS 12 6) Insert flashdrive with Gparted-live and restart.. Make sure the bios setting is in such a way that it boots from USB.. 7) Select GParted Live (Default Settings) 8) Accept Default Settings 9) Look at the right top corner in the GParted window for the device ID (Here it is /dev/sda).. 10) Open Terminal by double clicking the icon 11) Type "sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdX" Replace '/dev/sdX' with the correct disk ID noted in GParted (X-replace with your device id) 12) It will give details of your hard disk.. Check whether this is the correct disk..Make sure it is the correct disk!!! Do it at your own risk!!! 13) Under Security, the line + "Supported: enhanced erase" or similar should show up ; otherwise, it implies the SSD won’t support secure erase. 14) It will show status under Security: not enabled 15) Set temporary password like 123456: hdparm --user-master u --security-set-pass 123456 /dev/sdX (X-replace with your device id) 16) If you type "hdparm -I /dev/sdX" again it will give status under Security as enabled (X-replace with your device id) 17) Time for climax... Wiping SSD.. hdparm --user-master u --security-erase 123456 /dev/sdX X-your device id 18) Depending on SSD it may take some time. 19) There you go!!! SSD is wiped.. 20) You can type again "hdparm -I /dev/sdX" to check status X-your device id 21) Status Security changed to not enabled again. Temporary password is removed. The disk is wiped successfully. 22) Close all and exit GParted

How to Format a Hard Drive or SSD to Erase it Forever! DIY in 5 Ep. 82

04:46
What is formatting a hard drive or SSD? When should you do it? How does one go about doing it? We will show you how to format an SSD or hard drive. Disk formatting is the process of prepping a storage device - like a hard drive, SSD, thumb drive (USB flash drive), etc - to store information, which will erase the existing data forever! There are three main parts of this process: 1) Low-level formatting - basic prep of the drive. 2) Partitioning - making the data on the drive recognizable to the operating system. 3) High-level formatting – this typically refers to the process of creating a new file system. Most people will just use the term ‘format’ to refer to all 3 parts of this process and luckily, there are modern operating systems that make this process much less complicated than it sounds. Most drives come pre-formatted out of the box, so the initial formatting is done for you. However, you might consider reformatting the drive if you want to erase all the data on a drive. Formatting wipes it clean for the most part. Another reason to format a drive is if you need to make the drive compatible with a different type of computer than it has already been formatted for. If you’ve ever experienced a thumb drive working on a PC but not on a Mac or vice-versa, it’s the drive’s formatting that’s usually the culprit. Different Formatting Options There are a few different drive formats to choose from. FAT stands for File Access Table and is one of the original disk formats. exFAT & FAT64 are format types designed for use with flash memory cards and flash drives. FAT32 is a common option you’ll hear mentioned because it’s recognized by both Mac and Windows operating systems, but it offers no security and caps files at 4GB in size. NTFS format has a much larger max file size, but is read-only on Mac OS X (unless you install a special NTSF read/write utility). HFS or Mac OS Extended is the native solution for Mac users and has the max file size of any of them, but it’s a no go for PC users. That being said, there are tools available to use NTFS on a Mac (Fuse) or HFS on PC (HFSExplorer). Another option, for those who use both Windows and MacOS regularly, is to partition your hard drive and have a portion of the drive formatted for each OS. We will not cover this here, but if that’s something you’re interested in, let us know in the comments and we might make an episode about it. Formatting Drives in Windows For my Windows users, open up File Explorer, find the drive you want to format on the left side, right-click and choose Format. You are then presented with a simple set of formatting options. If you want to go a little deeper than what that menu allows, you can also open Disk Management and format the drive. Once you right-click the drive you want to format and select a file system, capacity, unit size, and your drive name, the system will begin formatting the drive. If you choose Quick Format, this is obviously a faster option, but it will not scan the disk for bad sectors. A full format will take care of that for you. Formatting Drives on a Mac OS 10+ Launch Disk Utility, which is built right into Mac OS. You can press Command + U to open the Utilities folder and from there open the Disk Utilities app. Choose the drive you’d like to format on the left, then choose Erase. Disk Utility will automatically choose a format for you, including the option of APFS if you are running High Sierra or newer, or you can use the formatting options drop-down to choose a different format. After that, you’ll name your drive and go to the next step - Security Options. Here you’ll choose where you lie on a slider between Fastest and Most Secure. Fastest will leave some of the underlying files there, even though they’ll be hidden, whereas Most Secure erases the drive seven times over, it's gone forever! Click on Erase and that’s that! If these tips helped you at all, please go ahead and subscribe so you don’t miss any future episodes. Subscribe to Kingston: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=KingstonTechMemory

Works on hard drives. I'm not sure whether it works properly on SSD drives or hybrid hard drives. If you know more about this, please comment. _UPDATE_ It has been reported that SOME Samsung hard drives won't be erased by this method, however all other brands of 15GB or more AND manufactured from 2001 should be wiped thoroughly with this method. Securely Erase SSD Drive For Free

03:12
Securely Erase SSD Drive For Free So you want to secure erase your SSD and don't know how? well solid state drives are not the same as a mecanical hard drive and you have to be very carefull when wipeing a SSD. So whether you are scrubbing the drive clean for peace of mind or whether you are selling the computer. Its best to wipe the data from the drive so it can never be recovered via data recovery software. I am going to be showing you how to Sanitize a Samsung SSD drive using Samsung Magician. This software can use downloaded for free and other SSD brands with have the own type of erasing tool or software. Using this Secure Erase method will remove and wipe all data on the SSD that your are runing it on. This is the best way to wipe and erase a SSD without putting a lot of wear and tear on the SSD. SSDs store data differently from hard disk drives and it has to be done this way using ATA Secure Erase. Most brands of SSDs Have a built-in command called TRIM, the ATA Secure Erase feature will tell the on-board firmware to run a sanitization on the requred drive to remove all data. I did make a video a while ago on how to use Parted Magic to wipe SSD with ATA Secure Erase. Its not free, but I will leave a link for that video.
