Oracle Database 12c Security - Oracle Virtual Private Database (VPD)

12:29
Learn how to use Oracle Virtual Private Database (VPD) to secure your data. See all lessons at http://skillbuilders.com/12c-TSDP-Tutorial First, Virtual Private Database. What is it? Answer: It's a declarative technique for enforcing security. Typically, it's based on user application context. That was the first limitation of 8i. Backed with 8i context were session-specific. The context variables were sort in the PGA. That means you simply couldn't use this in a web environment. However, global context, with use of 9i, Virtual Private Database became usable for web applications with connection pooling. But whether you're using it to client server or on a three tier environment, it's declarative technique rather than a programmatic technique. I can go behind the back of the application as a DBA and generate predicates to get appended to all SQLs. Select, insert, update, delete the end users. Issue the SQL and I will generate a predicate that filters the access. It's impossible to bypass. All users will have predicates appended to all their code. It doesn't matter whether they're using SQL Plus, Discoverer, Business Objects, Crystal Reports, eBusiness Suites, whatever they're using, I as DBA can filter their access to roles. The end result, different users see different data sets while running the same code and accessing the same tables, hence, the name Virtual Private Database. Different users will think they're seeing a totally different set of tables, but in fact it's one column database, one set of tables hosting a single application shared by all the users. The mechanism - you can apply VPD to tables, to views, to synonyms, and a declarative technique. Once the technique you write a function that generates the predicate, you associate the function with the table. From then on whenever the user issue SQL against that table the Cost-Based Optimizer rewrites the code. The Cost-Based Optimizer rewrites the user SQL to call the function to generate the predicate. The predicate is then appended to the SQL and it's the modified SQL that is parsed and executed. Let's see how this actually works. I'm working here by the way. This is just a perfectly normal 12.1 database. But what I'm going to demonstrate at this point will in fact work on 11g as well. I'm not going to be using any of the 12c enhancements to VPD for this little demonstration. I'll work in the scott schema. What do we have to do? We write a function to generate the predicate string. Create function. And I'll my function vpdf. The function must conform to a fixed specification. It must take two varchar arguments. One of the arguments is intended to be the schema to which the function will be applied. The other argument is the object within the schema to which the function will be applied. And it must return a varchar2, which is the generated predicate. Let's begin. Within this function you can do just about anything. There are some limitations. It's impossible for the function to query or update the table against which the VPD calls here is going to be applied or we violate the rules of purity that we come across so often with PL/SQL. But apart from that, it can do just about anything - including a number of dreadful side effects can be introduced by writing VPD functions. I'm going to do a very simple one on this one. I'll shall simple return immediately a predicate. What predicate? Ename, which is the ename column from this scott.emp table. Ename should equal sys_context. I'll go to the local context, my user end context, and just extract session user. We can see that John has tested this earlier today and therefore the object already was suggesting and he's just dropping it now and cleaning up the recreate. I hope you realize these really are live demonstrations. I'm not just running scripts. I've created a function. What's that function going to do? It's going to return this value here. Test it. Always test it and see what it's actually going to do. I'll select vpdf. I have to give it a couple of arguments. This one will do for now.

Foreign key represent a link or say a relationship between columns of tables. Similar to primary key constraint Foreign Key constraint is also of two types. Simple Foreign key constraint and Composite Foreign key constraint. Constraint which involves only one column in foreign key in child table and one column in reference key in parent table is called Simple Foreign Key. While the constraint which involves more than one column in foreign key in child table and more than one column in reference key in the parent table is called Composite Foreign Key.

Oracle SQL Tutorial 16 - Parent Child Relationships

06:09
So far in this series we have discussed database design, creating tables, and constraints. We've brought up the concept of foreign keys, but we have not explained how to create them. That is the goal of this video and the upcoming videos. We want to study those foreign keys! Let's make them not so foreign. Let's learn the proper way to define a foreign key. As a reminder, a foreign key is a column that references a column of another table. The column it references must either be a primary key, or have the UNIQUE constraint. This means that every value inside of the column that is labeled as a foreign key, there must be that value in some row of the referenced column. As an example, imagine that we have the users table, and we have a table service_requests. We could have a column in the service_request that references a column in the users table. Usually this would be the primary key that is referenced, but there is nothing stopping you from referencing a unique column. Just for fun, let's go through an example using the username column. If we have a service_requests table, every single row within the table is going to be what some would consider an instance of a service_request. This means that the table columns are like the blueprint for what a service request looks like and then each row is an individual service request. If we have one of the columns labeled as a foreign key to the username of the users table, what does that mean practically? It means that for a single row, the value for that column must be a value that exists in the users table. We could have a service_request submitted by a user with the username of Yoloswagman. This means that there must be a row inside of the users table that has the value Yoloswagman for the username column. This brings up the concept of parent and child relationships. Yoloswagman in this situation is the parent, and his service request is the child. When we draw it out, it makes sense why a primary key must be UNIQUE. If we had two Yoloswagmans, the child would not know which column is the parent. The same applies if we were using IDs and we had So remember, always reference a primary key or a column with the UNIQUE constraint. Now, I have a question for you. Do foreign keys automatically have the UNIQUE constraint, just like primary keys? The answer is no. A parent row can have many child rows. It makes sense because the user could submit multiple service requests. Can we force the column to be unique? Absolutely. If that was the case, the user could only make one service request. Another question. Do foreign keys automatically have the NOT NULL constraint, just like primary keys? The answer is no. Essentially what this means is that a child could be created with no parent. Can we force the column to be NOT NULL? Absolutely. It is ok in some situations to allow the row to be null, but in this situation it makes no sense. It would be wise for us to add that constraint ourselves. So now that you understand some more differences between primary and foreign keys and parent child relationships, take all of these questions into consideration when you are creating foreign keys. In the next video, we are going to start a small project that is going to require multiple tables. We'll take a video to design our structure and then we'll get to creating those foreign keys in Oracle SQL Developer. 14:51
A new series using APEX 18.1 is now available. https://youtu.be/65LExgaQMHI This is one video in a series about APEX 5. In this video we generate an application in APEX (a container for the application design elements) and we look at the difference in theme styles for an application. Next, we create a form with report which actually creates two pages--one for the form and one for the report. The report is interactive and has many readily available features for filtering, sorting, grouping, etc. The form allows a new record to be created and updates to an existing record.

This is a very common sql server interview question. Object explorer with in sql server management studio can be used to get the list of tables in a specific database. However, if we have to write a query to achieve the same, there are 3 system views that we can use. 1. SYSOBJECTS - Supported in SQL Server version 2000, 2005 & 2008 2. SYS.TABLES - Supported in SQL Server version 2005 & 2008 3. Excel to SQL

12:12
Excel to SQL http://www.sql-excel.com One of the things that I see IT software development people struggle with is SQL to Excel integration. SQL to Excel integration unfortunately has been made unnecessarily cumbersome because of the rather primitive awkward way Microsoft has chosen to implement SQL to Excel communication. That's why I created a way to solve SQL to Excel integration once and for all. It doesn't have to be hard. It doesn't have to take a long time to develop software/spreadsheets which integrates SQL to Excel. And in fact, Excel is the PERFECT platform for integrating SQL to Excel database access. Excel is PERFECT for rapid application development (RAD). The right out-of-the-box though, SQL to Excel integration is painful in Excel. Not only that, but the way SQL to Excel was implemented, it created tremendous opportunity for the data to be structured wrong, or at minimum, misinterpreted. Let me give you one specific example. I called this example "data drift." What do I mean by "data drift?" It's when you have a SQL table and it's imported into Excel. The data into Excel spreadsheet is static, imported only one time during an Excel session. However, the data in the SQL table continues to be updated by different user departments in the company. In essence, the SQL to Excel "data drifts" more and from the corporate database on the server. This is where Microsoft's way of integrating SQL to Excel functionality falls far short. As you can imagine, this can cause tremendous problems with departments and users. And it's one of the main reasons, SQL to Excel integration projects are so frustrating. I though there had to be a better way of implementing SQL to Excel integration. My new SQL to Excel tool set I developed, solves that problem once and for all. Because now the data can be refreshed either through seamless and transparent SQL to Excel, or Excel to SQL integrations at key checkpoints and function points in the spreadsheet. The best part, is that SQL to Excel integration is ALL transparent to the user. While there is updating going on in the background/behind the scenes, the user is unaware of the SQL to Excel communication going on. Once my way of SQL to Excel has been implemented, the problem of data drift literally disappears. Because it looks like to the user they are really doing SQL to Excel importing and later updating the SQL database IN REAL-TIME. SQL to Excel, or Excel to SQL doesn't have to be hard to develop either. In fact with my tools, if you're a software developer, I've made SQL to Excel a snap. In less than a few minutes from now, you can be impressing your boss or the users with what you can do with Excel. You'll be able to make Excel do backflips, things you, as a software developer always wanted it to do. Using my SQL to Excel toolset, rapid application development (RAD) is a reality inside Excel. I urge you to check out my website at http://www.sql-excel.com. Once you do, you'll never go back to the slow, error prone, painful way of implementing SQL to Excel integrations in the future. SQL to Excel integrations from here forward will actually be fun and make your users extremely happy and confident in the data. Best Way to Write Basic SQL Queries

13:33
SQL Server Query writing strategies is something I have yet to find in any book. When enthusiastic SQL students do this, they experience a revelation. The number of errors drops significantly and the speed at writing complex queries increases immediately. Knowing how to narrow down what we are looking for amongst a vast list of choices helps immensely. Grabbing the right tables first and then the fields second is akin to grabbing the right menu before ordering an item from it. In fact, one student named Tim took this back to his team of SQL developers and they immediately implemented this process. We are all used to following steps. Most of the time, actions are sequential from top to bottom or left to right. Other times we complete things in phases. The two phases we are going to use in this exercise apply to joining tables. This is easy to implement as we only need remember to organize first and clean up second. When visiting a new restaurant, we will ask to see the menu, because we want to see all they have to offer. The odds are that we might be interested in half of the items, but only need a few dishes for our group at the table. Looking at the menu is like starting a query with a ‘SELECT *’ statement. Once we have looked at all the fields, we narrow our choice(s) to only the items we want at the time. Sometimes restaurants have multiple menus. My favorite restaurant has a kids’ menu, an adult menu, a gluten-free menu and a drink menu. These menus were each gathered at our table. Ultimately, in my head, a selection was narrowed to what was needed. Phase I: Organize. When building a new query from many tables, we often find ourselves wondering, “Where do I start?” First, lay the steps out by identifying which tables contain the essential data. Second, get all the table joins working with a basic ‘SELECT *’ statement. Third, add any basic filtering criteria. Phase II: Itemize. Once all joins and criteria, such as SELECT, FROM and WHERE are working, we are ready for Phase II. This entails going back and changing our ‘SELECT *’ to an itemized SELECT field list as the final step. Let’s explore how this two-phase process of Organize and then Itemize can be a big time-saver. We are going to use one of the challenges from the last lab. In Lab 3.2 (Outer Joins), Skill Check 2, we needed to get four fields from two different tables. If we were to list all four desired fields and test one table at time, we will get an error as seen on the right side of the figure below. In the figure below we write a SELECT statement and part of the FROM clause. When completed, the FROM clause will have two tables, but for now we just want to get the Location table working. By using the ‘SELECT *’ strategy, we remove any possible errors from line 1. From there, we can focus on the more complicated logic used for joining tables together. We can add tables one at a time until everything is working. This is the Organize phase. NOTE: SELECT * never results in an Error message stating “invalid column name”, however; a SELECT list with itemized field(s) can have this error. After our query is organized and working, we can go back and itemize the SELECT field list to display only the fields that are necessary. This is done during Phase II (Itemize). The steps for this system are broken down as follows: Since SELECT is always the first statement in a query, it’s natural to want to write the field names before writing the FROM clause. However; we can save time and trouble by using the ‘*’ until the entire query is working properly. When this is complete, it is very easy to itemize the field list, with the confidence of knowing it will not cause any problems. Exercise: Simple membership for a club: Table1 (id_Member,name_Member, email_member, title, age, company) Table2 (id_Club,club_name, club_Location, address) Table3 (id_club, id_member,membership_date) Q1: Show all member names, email, age, and company from Table1 Q2: Show all club name, location, and address data Q3: Show member name, club name, club location (hint: Use joins and all 3 tables) You can find all other classes related to this video here: http://www.joes2pros.com/joes2pros/Course/Introduction_To_Microsoft_SQL_Server Enroll Today & Get the First Month for only $1! Alter database table columns without dropping table Part 67

04:06
In this video, we will discuss, altering a database table column without having the need to drop the table. Let's understand this with an example. Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2013/08/part-67-alter-database-table-columns.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2013/09/part-67-alter-database-table-columns.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists We will be using table tblEmployee for this demo. Use the sql script below, to create and populate this table with some sample data. Create table tblEmployee ( ID int primary key identity, Name nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(50), Salary nvarchar(50) ) Insert into tblEmployee values('Sara Nani','Female','4500') Insert into tblEmployee values('James Histo','Male','5300') Insert into tblEmployee values('Mary Jane','Female','6200') Insert into tblEmployee values('Paul Sensit','Male','4200') Insert into tblEmployee values('Mike Jen','Male','5500') The requirement is to group the salaries by gender. To achieve this we would write a sql query using GROUP BY as shown below. Select Gender, Sum(Salary) as Total from tblEmployee Group by Gender When you execute this query, we will get an error - Operand data type nvarchar is invalid for sum operator. This is because, when we created tblEmployee table, the "Salary" column was created using nvarchar datatype. SQL server Sum() aggregate function can only be applied on numeric columns. So, let's try to modify "Salary" column to use int datatype. Let's do it using the designer. 1. Right click on "tblEmployee" table in "Object Explorer" window, and select "Design" 2. Change the datatype from nvarchar(50) to int 3. Save the table At this point, you will get an error message - Saving changes is not permitted. The changes you have made require the following tables to be dropped and re-created. You have either made changes to a table that can't be re-created or enabled the option Prevent saving changes that require the table to be re-created. So, the obvious next question is, how to alter the database table definition without the need to drop, re-create and again populate the table with data? There are 2 options Option 1: Use a sql query to alter the column as shown below. Alter table tblEmployee Alter column Salary int Option 2: Disable "Prevent saving changes that require table re-creation" option in sql server 2008 1. Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008 2. Click Tools, select Options 3. Expand Designers, and select "Table and Database Designers" 4. On the right hand side window, uncheck, Prevent saving changes that require table re-creation 5. Click OK
