Four Steps to Oracle SQL Tuning - A Methodolgy

02:43
Learn a predictable and repeatable methodology for tuning Oracle SQL statements. Just four steps that you should always follow when tuning an SQL statement. (Note this video does not contain examples of how to apply the four steps, just what the steps are.) Oracle Certified Master John Watson presents. John concludes with a brief overview of how SkillBuilders SQL tuning course provides the information you need to apply the four steps. Learn more about SkillBuilders SQL Tuning course http://skillbuilders.com/oracle-sql-tuning-training 1. What is Oracle doing? (explain plan, trace) 2. Why is Oracle doing it that way? (analyze the execution plan) 3. Is there a better way? Test! 4. If there's a better way, push the CBO towards the better way.

Getting Started with PL/SQL Table Functions: Pipelined Table Functions

14:49
Pipelined table functions are table functions in which rows are returned or "piped" back to the calling query before the function has completed, avoiding the blocking behavior of normal PL/SQL functions and reduce PGA consumption. This video is part of the Oracle Dev Gym class "Getting Started with Table Functions". You can watch it independent of the class, but then you miss out on the tutorials and quizzes! So visit https://devgym.oracle.com/pls/apex/dg/class/getting-started-with-pl-sql-table-functions.html and register for the class! ======================================== Practically Perfect PL/SQL with Steven Feuerstein Copyright © 2018 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Oracle SQL MERGE Statement

07:52
https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-merge-sql/ In this video, we’ll learn what the Oracle MERGE statement does and how you can use it. What is the MERGE statement? It’s a statement that lets you either insert or update data in a table - all in a single statement! It’s helpful if you’re using an ETL (Extract Transform Load) process when creating or updating a data warehouse. It’s also helpful when loading data into your own database if you’re not creating a data warehouse. It allows you to prevent duplicate data and ensure you have up-to-date data in your table. The syntax looks like this: MERGE INTO table_name USING table_name ON (condition) WHEN MATCHED THEN update_clause DELETE where_clause WHEN NOT MATCHED THEN insert_clause [LOG ERRORS log_errors_clause reject_limit integer | unlimited ] In this video, I also show an Oracle SQL MERGE statement example, so watch the video to find out more. For more information on the MERGE statement and how you can use it in your queries, read the related article here: https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-merge-sql/

As the name says, in this hacking session I'll demo how full table scans (and full segment scans) work and related stuff too, like direct path read checkpoints and ORA-8103 errors.  It's an old video from 2011 so not with the best recording resolution, but should still be fun. As direct path reads go, some things have changed and should be clarified, perhaps the best explanation is here: https://blogs.oracle.com/smartscan-deep-dive/when-bloggers-get-it-wrong-part-1 https://blogs.oracle.com/smartscan-deep-dive/when-bloggers-get-it-wrong-part-2

Performance Anti-Patterns: Non-query DML inside loops

14:03
Lots of code follows patterns. Some of the patterns are good ones, some them are bad - and these we call "anti-patterns." In this video, Steven identifies a common and, for many, surprising anti-pattern - and then shows how to turn it into a design pattern worthy of use. The anti-pattern is the execution on non-query DML (inserts, updates, deletes) inside a loop. The refactored positive design is based on bulk processing in PL/SQL. Along the way, Steven shows how this involves moving from row-by-row to phased processing. ================================================== Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Top Nine Coding Guidelines for Oracle PL/SQL

08:00
My take, as of November 2015, of some of the most helpful guidelines to follow when writing PL/SQL code: 1. MAXSQL - maximize use of SQL first and foremost 2. SPOD - single point of definition 3. TRACE - production-available application-level tracing 4. LOG - consistent, encapsulated error logging 5. BULK - avoid row by row 6. OBVIOUS - make your code tell its own story, comment when it can't 7. NESTPROG - use nested subprograms 8. DECLARE - use declarative features of language 9. WARN - use compile-time warnings Accompanying blog post: http://stevenfeuersteinonplsql.blogspot.com/2015/10/your-ideas-for-more-important-plsql.html ======================================== Practically Perfect PL/SQL with Steven Feuerstein Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Held on April 20 2018 Andy Rivenes (@TheInMemoryGuy) and Maria Colgan (@SQLMaria) focused on a deep dive into hash joins and how they are used with Database In-Memory to make joins lightning fast. The session began by reviewing how traditional hash joins work and then addressed Bloom filters and how Database In-Memory uses them to effectively turn hash joins into scan and filter operations. The use of Join Groups was then discussed as a way to further enhance join performance in 12.2 and beyond. Does SQL table join order matter?
