Microsoft Azure vs. Amazon AWS - Deep Dive Training - Which one to select?

40:42
Microsoft Azure vs. Amazon AWS - Deep Dive into Features and Functionalities Amazon owns the largest data centers in the world. They are located in 9 regions around the world: 3 in the US and 6 scattered strategically around the globe. A tenth one is coming up in China exclusively for that market and will be completely isolated from the others to placate Chinese concerns about US government spying, which have of course been heightened following the Edward Snowden revelations. In 2013 Amazon also won a coveted contract to create GovCloud, a private cloud expressly for the U.S. government. Because of Amazon's dominance in the cloud services market, we've created a 2-part post on using GuardRail with Amazon AWS EC2, so be sure to check it out. Azure isn’t anywhere near the size of AWS, but Microsoft has been working hard to match Amazon’s services and flexibility. For example in early 2014 Azure begun offering the data storage redundancy across data center regions – a feature dubbed Zone Redundant Storage (ZRS). It also introduced a new ‘Basic’ service level that removes auto-scaling and load balancing for those clients who don’t require such services, such as those running test environments and batch processing applications. For Windows-centric development or hosting, Azure offers slightly better options – Visual Studio, .NET and Windows programming languages such as VB and Visual C++ are all fully supported and well integrated. On the other hand, Azure also suffers because of Microsoft’s sometimes non-standard quirks. This is especially true for Internet Explorer and the problems it causes web developers. Others are problems with the Web Roles feature (equivalent to AWS’s Elastic Beanstalk) and Microsoft’s own Silverlight interface, which sometimes has interoperability problems with several browsers. Pricing for cloud services is notorious for its difficulty when trying to do an apples-to-apples comparison. The reason for this is the differences in configuration and measuring of computing units, not to mention the differences in the myriad services offered – compute, storage, database, traffic and so on. As an estimation, an AWS m3.large instance (21 CPU, 3.75 GB memory) costs $0.133/hour. The closest equivalent on Microsoft is the Medium VM (2 x 1.6GHz CPU, 3.5GB RAM) and costs $0.45/hour. Despite the tit-for-tat price cuts, Azure still seems to be more expensive than AWS for computing, but the former also offers good discounts for upfront, long-term payments. The same comparison difficulty also affects performance, though to a lesser extent. Performance comparison is also significantly affected by the location of the vendor’s nearest data center in relation to the tester. This is good news for Amazon with its several strategically placed data centers worldwide and especially in North America. Read a more in depth performance comparison here. And for an overview and comparison of cloud service providers, check out our cloud service provider roundup. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Google Compute Cloud (GCP) - Lab Session on creating Windows Server Instance" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mq5OeuMxz4Y -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

SQL to Excel

07:04
SQL to Excel http://www.sql-excel.com The one thing that really gets under my skin when it comes to SQL to Excel integration, is that Excel really wastes your time. Unless you have some tricks up your sleeve. SQL to Excel integration out-of-the-box from Microsoft leads a lot to be desired. Sometimes with tricky imports you might think that it would be better to use some other platform like Microsoft Access. But Microsoft's Excel from a user perspective is really a great platform for both these user as well as the developer for data intensive analysis. But you have to use SQL to Excel components correctly, otherwise you'll be wasting hours upon hours doing mindless tasks. I know, because for the last 10 years I've done SQL to Excel integration or my company. I work as a user business analyst, but I have a very strong background in software development. Specifically doing Excel development. It would be nice, if Excel had a robust SQL to Excel function toolbox. But unfortunately it does not. It's like SQL to Excel functionality was almost an afterthought. That's when I decided enough was enough. I had had my last all nighter trying to get Excel to do SQL to Excel the right way. You've probably had similar experiences. So I developed my own SQL to Excel tool set. My own SQL to Excel function toolbox. And now after about six months of using it in my company and for my users, I can tell you that it was one of the best things they've ever seen and used. They don't complain anymore when the data doesn't match up from the department to department. That's because there is no more what I call data drift. It's when the data in the SQL databases is not updated consistently. With the SQL to Excel functionality, the data drift disappears there is no more delay or data islands. Or even silos of data. All the users are happy because they are working from the same database source. The SQL to Excel functions automatically and transparently update and refresh the databases behind the scenes. I've achieved what I think is SQL to Excel nirvana. Because no longer am I pulling my hair out trying to get Excel to do SQL to Excel importing and exporting on its own. Now I'm happy SQL to Excel applications, and my users in their departments are happy with SQL to Excel applications. The next question is: Will you be happy with the SQL to Excel toolbox I've created? Will you download and apply my SQL to Excel in your next application? There's no reason not to. Because to download and install my SQL to Excel toolbox is free. You can get started right now. As in right this second. Never again will you be confused and frustrated because your SQL databases are not consistent. Never again will you be screaming how slow it is to develop SQL to Excel applications in Excel. You'll be like me and my users in their departments. You'll be happy and you'll be looking forward to the time when you can develop SQL to Excel applications without the pain and suffering you've experienced in the past. So go ahead and download my toolbox for SQL to Excel integration now. And then you can e-mail me and tell me how happy that you found this video and were able to finally put an end to SQL to Excel frustration. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDrZXiOuEmk SQL to Excel

Matthias Troyer: "High Performance Quantum Computing"

01:10:21
Matthias Troyer visited Google LA to speak about "High Performance Quantum Computing." This talk took place on December 2, 2014. Abstract: As the outlines of a roadmap to building powerful quantum devices becomes more concrete an important emerging question is that of important real-world applications of quantum computers. While there exist many quantum algorithms which asymptotically outperform classical algorithms, asymptotic superiority can be misleading. In order for a quantum computer to be competitive, it needs to not only be asymptotically competitive but be able to solve problems within a limited time (for example one year) that no post-exa-scale classical supercomputer can solve within the same time. This search for a quantum killer-app turns out to be a formidable challenge. Using quantum chemistry simulations as a typical example, it turns out that significant advances in quantum algorithms are needed to achieve this goal. I will review how substantial improvements and optimized massively parallel implementation strategies of quantum algorithms have brought the problem of quantum chemistry from the realm of science fiction closer to being realistic. Similar algorithmic improvements will be needed in other areas in order to identify more “killer apps” for quantum computing. I will end with a short detour to quantum annealers and present a summary of our recent results on simulated classical and quantum annealing. Bio: Matthias Troyer is professor of computational physics at ETH Zurich where he teaches advanced C++ programming, high performance computing, and simulations methods for quantum systems. He is a pioneer of cluster computing in Europe, having been responsible for the installation of the first Beowulf cluster in Europe with more than 500 CPUs in 1999, and the most energy efficient general purpose computer on the top-500 list in 2008. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and his activities range from quantum simulations and quantum computing to the development of novel simulation algorithms, high performance computing, and computational provenance. He is, the author of the Boost MPI C++ library for message passing on parallel computers, and the leader of the open-source ALPS library for the simulation of quantum many body systems.

How to DJ perfectly with Virtual DJ - Beginners Tutorial

09:59
Update: Some people have been saying they don't have the MixLab V3.1 skin or it doesn't fit their screen. Solutions Can't find skin? Download it here and put it in your VirtualDJ skins folder located in My Documents. Do not unzip it, just leave the zip file in the Skins folder. http://www.speedyshare.com/987315626.html VDJ Mix Lab V.3.1 skin doesn't fit screen The reason for this is that your screen resolution is too small. It requires a minimum of 1280 x 800 resolution which is native widescreen for many 14", 15" laptops. Any 4:3 aspect LCD or CRT should also support this but you need to set resolution at the minimum to 1280 x 1024 which can be done by right clicking at the desktop, going to properties and then Display and changing the slider there. If your monitor doesn't go any higher and it still doesn't show the whole picture, then either A - Get a new monitor that does, or you can click the Maximize button next to the X button on the very top right to stretch it to fit your screen but it'll be in a wonky looking aspect ratio. Hey guys, Alot of people have asked me how to DJ so here it is! Download VDJ trial http://www.virtualdj.com/download/trial.html The tracks used were Scott Brown - Definition of a Badboy (Cheever Remix) Compulsion & Orbit 1 - Got Any Give me feed back on how this goes!

Atlantic slave trade

01:17:12
The Atlantic slave trade or transatlantic slave trade took place across the Atlantic Ocean from the 16th through to the 19th centuries. The vast majority of those enslaved that were transported to the New World, many on the triangular trade route and its Middle Passage, were West Africans from the central and western parts of the continent sold by West Africans to Western European slave traders, or by direct European capture to the Americas. The numbers were so great that Africans who came by way of the slave trade became the most numerous Old-World immigrants in both North and South America before the late 18th century. Far more slaves were taken to South America than to the north. The South Atlantic economic system centered on producing commodity crops, and making goods and clothing to sell in Europe, and increasing the numbers of African slaves brought to the New World. This was crucial to those Western European countries which, in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, were vying with each other to create overseas empires. The Portuguese were the first to engage in the New World slave trade in the 16th century, and others soon followed. Ship owners considered the slaves as cargo to be transported to the Americas as quickly and cheaply as possible, there to be sold to labour in coffee, tobacco, cocoa, sugar and cotton plantations, gold and silver mines, rice fields, construction industry, cutting timber for ships, in skilled labour, and as domestic servants. The first Africans imported to the English colonies were classified as "indentured servants," like workers coming from England, and also, "apprentices for life". By the middle of the 17th century, slavery had hardened as a racial caste; they and their offspring were legally the property of their owners, and children born to slave mothers were slaves. As property, the people were considered merchandise or units of labour, and were sold at markets with other goods and services. This video is targeted to blind users. Distributed database

13:31
A distributed database is a database in which storage devices are not all attached to a common processing unit such as the CPU, controlled by a distributed database management system. It may be stored in multiple computers, located in the same physical location; or may be dispersed over a network of interconnected computers. Unlike parallel systems, in which the processors are tightly coupled and constitute a single database system, a distributed database system consists of loosely coupled sites that share no physical components. System administrators can distribute collections of data across multiple physical locations. A distributed database can reside on network servers on the Internet, on corporate intranets or extranets, or on other company networks. Because they store data across multiple computers, distributed databases can improve performance at end-user worksites by allowing transactions to be processed on many machines, instead of being limited to one. Using Efficient Oblivious Computation to Keep Data Private and Obfuscate Programs

51:45
Protecting sensitive user data and proprietary programs are fundamental and important challenges. For instance, when users outsource their private data to the cloud, they risk leakage of the data in the event of a data breach; encrypting their data is not a workable solution since it impedes the cloud provider’s ability to offer user-specific services. When companies execute proprietary programs on third-party cloud providers, they similarly face the risk of leaking trade secrets. In this talk, I will discuss efficient data-oblivious computation and show how it can be applied to address each of the above. In particular, I will introduce GraphSC, an efficient, parallel, secure-computation framework for running data-mining algorithms on private user data that allows programmers to express computation tasks using the familiar GraphLab abstraction. I will then present HOP, a secure processor designed to obfuscate proprietary programs. I will conclude with an overview of my other ongoing and future research on privacy-preserving computation and blockchains. Despite all you hear about using ‘agile’ in government, it can still be hard to actually change the way your agency builds digital projects. The 18F Consulting team directly engages with agencies to help them integrate agile project management into how they contract and how they operate. David Zvenyach has significant experience both as a lawyer and a developer in government and will lay out the lessons that agencies have learned transitioning their tech into a truly agile shop.
