Improving Your Cursive Handwriting

03:51
A couple of quick tips to improving your cursive handwriting -- which seems to be something almost everyone wants to do after they get their first fountain pen. The pen I'm writing with is a Pilot Metropolitan with a Fine nib. The writing style is something I derived from one commonly used in the age of dip pens -- when it was important, if not imperative, to be legible since it was your only option. I call it CJ Roundhand. Here's a video I (finally) made about it: http://youtu.be/9uWXrcTuzJE And a demo: https://youtu.be/KMkrdPu7K7c LINKS: Twitter: https://twitter.com/_cjcs_ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cjs.creative.studio/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cjcs Website: http://cjcs.com

Relax as I take what could be an 80-90 year old dip pen and introduce it to ink for the very first time. My son and daughter-in-law gave me this pen as a gift. It is a pen that was sold as a souvenir at a tourist attraction called Cave of the Winds, in Colorado. I believe it to be from the 1930's but cannot be certain. Perhaps it is newer, but then again I suppose it could be older...who knows. Headphones or ear-buds are recommended for this video. Click the link below to see the revised version of this video: https://youtu.be/vYr9f-UJIuY The pen is made from what appears to be brass and has a Mother of Pearl body. Also in the box was a nice hand-painted, Mother of Pearl letter opener. I must admit that I was surprised by not only how well the pen writes, but by the amount of line variation I was able to achieve. This video is not a review, but rather me simply enjoying a very thoughtful gift. For all of you eagle-eyed types, yes, I realize that I wrote a word or two twice, that was intentional because I wasn't happy with the first one, so no need to call me out on it. Out of habit, I also wrote "fountain pen" when I should have wrote "dip pen". No biggie, just relax and enjoy:) If you are wondering what I am writing at the time a massive drop of ink fell from the over-loaded pen, it was just some information I found on the internet about the Cave of the Winds attraction. I was going to read it after I wrote it, but due to the video taking an ugly turn, I decided on the fly to just post it here in the description. Enjoy:) Cave of the Winds info: Discovered in 1869 and opened to public tours in 1881, Cave of the Winds has been a place for visitors to explore the underground world for 130 years. But the history of the caves goes back even further -- it's millions of years old! Early legends of the Jicarilla Apaches, who migrated through the Pikes Peak region around 1000 AD, told of a cave in the Manitou Springs area where the Great Spirit of the Wind resided. In 1869, a recent settler to Williams Canyon named Arthur B. Love became intrigued by a cleft in the canyon's western wall. When he investigated the opening, he discovered a large limestone archway and a cave entrance that would later become Cave of the Winds. The modern era of Cave of the Winds began when brothers John and George Pickett went looking for new caves on a scouting trip in Williams Canyon in 1880. They discovered a small shelter cave near the limestone archway. When they lit their candles, they noticed that the flames flickered in the wind that blew from a nearby crevice. When they crawled through the passageway, they emerged into a large chamber that promised a world of exploration. That world of exploration was opened up by George Washington Snider, a stone cutter from Ohio who traveled to Colorado seeking fame and fortune. In the fall of 1880, Snider excavated passages from the Williams Canyon caves and discovered Canopy Hall. "It was as though Aladdin with his wonderful lamp had effected the magic result," Snider wrote. Snider continued to excavate and began preparations for guided tours. Cave of the Winds has been in continuous operation since February 1881 -- making it one of Colorado's original visitor attractions! Electrical lights were switched on in the caves on July 4, 1907, and visitors began traveling to Cave of the Winds in even great numbers -- first by carriage and railroad, and now by car and SUV! Congratulations! In reading the description, you found the secret bonus video! https://youtu.be/1UV4VLdne4M Headphones or ear-buds are recommended for this video. Typing a Letter with an Olivetti Typewriter for ASMR & Relaxation

25:22
Another video of my Olivetti Underwood Lettera 32 typewriter as I try to create something to either induce ASMR, to be relaxing and possibly both!. There are paper sounds, finger tapping sounds, brushing sounds using typewriter cleaning brushes, and of course typing sounds. As far as what I'm typing it's quite random, so don't expect it to make much sense if you can read it. Don't forget to check out my other 60 minute typewriter brushing video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meQqjYvlYa4 Patreon ► http://bit.ly/1EZgmNi You can listen to selected works outside of YouTube: Spotify ► http://bit.ly/1V23U60 CDBaby ► http://bit.ly/1AUt3Jj iTunes ► http://apple.co/1xIHLNd Google Play ► http://bit.ly/1vPUJgF And others like Deezer, Rhapsody, etc. Podcasts: EphemRadio ► http://apple.co/2afSkZQ Arkham Sanitarium ►http://apple.co/2alraeV Social Media: Facebook ► https://www.facebook.com/ephemeralrift1 Twitter ► https://twitter.com/EphemeralRift IG ► http://instagram.com/e.rift Deer Head ► http://bit.ly/2aLAw7Q What is ASMR? To me, ASMR is 2 things: a sensation and a medium (like music for example). The sensation itself (ASMR) stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response and is the current (non-scientific) name given to the feeling characterized as a pleasurable tingling sensation felt in the head, scalp, back and other regions of the body in response to visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and/or cognitive stimuli, such as crinkling bags, hand movements, whispering, personal attention or watching someone perform a task. It's like goosebumps, but much more pleasant. ASMR videos, the medium, are not only meant to help induce the sensation or "tingles" in the viewer, but also help provide a relaxing, calming and soothing experience for the viewer. They often help those dealing with anxiety, stress, headaches, insomnia, mental health issues, concentrating, studying and more. It is quite therapeutic, for both the creator and recipient, which is not that much different than the mediums of music and painting, for example. Many people who do not experience ASMR still enjoy the videos for their calming and sleepy effect.

Custom Namiki Falcon Resin Fountain Pen HD

Custom Namiki Falcon Resin Fountain Pen modified by John Mottishaw. He ground the nib (14k) extra fine and added flex to it (Spencerian customization). The nib requires medium pressure. The ink is Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo Night Sky (Greenish Deep Blue) which shades wonderfully on Bristol Board. This pen is difficult to use properly. Most fountain pens are not designed to achieve the line variation seen here. I purchased my pen here: http://www.nibs.com/NamikiFalconPage.htm Do not redistribute without permission please.

Why Do People In Old Movies Talk Weird?

02:54
It’s not quite British, and it’s not quite American – so what gives? Why do all those actors of yesteryear have such a distinct and strange accent? Learn more at HowStuffWorks.com: http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/movies-film-channel.htm Share on Facebook: http://goo.gl/1j6yim Share on Twitter: http://goo.gl/4FoAQy Subscribe: http://goo.gl/ZYI7Gt Visit our site: http://www.brainstuffshow.com If you’ve ever heard old movies or newsreels from the thirties or forties, then you’ve probably heard that weird old-timey voice. It sounds a little like a blend between American English and a form of British English. So what is this cadence, exactly? This type of pronunciation is called the Transatlantic, or Mid-Atlantic, accent. And it isn’t like most other accents – instead of naturally evolving, the Transatlantic accent was acquired. This means that people in the United States were taught to speak in this voice. Historically Transatlantic speech was the hallmark of aristocratic America and theatre. In upper-class boarding schools across New England, students learned the Transatlantic accent as an international norm for communication, similar to the way posh British society used Received Pronunciation – essentially, the way the Queen and aristocrats are taught to speak. It has several quasi-British elements, such a lack of rhoticity. This means that Mid-Atlantic speakers dropped their “r’s” at the end of words like “winner” or “clear”. They’ll also use softer, British vowels – “dahnce” instead of “dance”, for instance. Another thing that stands out is the emphasis on clipped, sharp t’s. In American English we often pronounce the “t” in words like “writer” and “water” as d’s. Transatlantic speakers will hit that T like it stole something. “Writer.” “Water.” But, again, this speech pattern isn’t completely British, nor completely American. Instead, it’s a form of English that’s hard to place… and that’s part of why Hollywood loved it. There’s also a theory that technological constraints helped Mid-Atlantic’s popularity. According to Professor Jay O’Berski, this nasally, clipped pronunciation is a vestige from the early days of radio. Receivers had very little bass technology at the time, and it was very difficult – if not impossible – to hear bass tones on your home device. Now we live in an age where bass technology is booms from the trunks of cars across America. So what happened to this accent? Linguist William Labov notes that Mid-Atlantic speech fell out of favor after World War II, as fewer teachers continued teaching the pronunciation to their students. That’s one of the reasons this speech sounds so ‘old-timey’ to us today: when people learn it, they’re usually learning it for acting purposes, rather than for everyday use. However, we can still hear the effects of Mid-Atlantic speech in recordings of everyone from Katherine Hepburn to Franklin D. Roosevelt and, of course, countless films, newsreels and radio shows from the 30s and 40s. How to write a basic paragraph

07:07
http://www.engvid.com/ A writing lesson for absolute beginners! Here are four very basic rules you must follow when writing simple paragraphs. Learn the basics -- capitals, indentation, line spacing, and more. Then take the quiz: http://www.engvid.com/how-to-write-a-basic-paragraph/ TRANSCRIPT Hello. Do you know how to write a basic paragraph? This is not only for ESL students. This is for everyone around the world, even if you speak English, even if you don't speak English. This is a very, very beautiful, basic lesson on how to write small, short, beautiful paragraphs. "How to Write a Basic Paragraph". Now, I also want you to be very careful. This is not how to write a 200-word essay for your university exam. We don't have enough time in the world for me to teach you that, and I probably forget. So this is, very simply, how to write a basic English paragraph. One, two, three, four rules. Rule No. 1 is: Indent, indent. What does "indent" mean? Indent, basically, means -- I learned this when I was a child -- you take your finger. You can have a big finger, a small finger -- I don't care. You take your finger or two fingers, and you make a little space like so. This is called an "indentation" or "indent". So "indent" means you leave a space at the very first line of the paragraph. And that's it. You do not leave a space at any other lines in the paragraph, only the first line. So it's very important that you only indent the first line of your paragraph like so. Okay. The next thing that you have to do is you have to use a capital letter at the beginning of every sentence. Now, the word that I've written is "I". Another rule in English is that every single time you write "I", it must be a capital. So I'm going to write an example sentence for you to illustrate what I mean: "I am a teacher." Okay? This is one sentence. So rule No. 3: At the end of my sentence, I must use a period. A "period" is a dot, if you'd like. So "I am a teacher." So what I'm going to do is my next sentence... I'm going to begin it with a capital letter. "My" -- so I want to say, "My name -- My name is Ronnie." So what I've done: Rule No. 1, indent. Rule No. 2, you have to use a capital letter at the beginning of every new sentence. Rule No. 3, you're going to use a period at the end of each sentence so that the person reading your beautiful paragraph knows when to stop and take a break. For example, if I did not have a period here, I'd say, "I'm a teacher my name is Ronnie." You need to break up your ideas. So one sentence has one thought and one period. "I am a teacher. My name is Ronnie." Next one. No. 4. I see this in a lot of students' writing. The two basic things about a paragraph are the form and the content. The form is the most important. The form is the indentation. And don't use point form. Do you know what "point form" is? If you're typing something on Word or on an email, "point form" is also called "bullets", which [makes shooting sounds]. So "bullet" means you would put each new sentence on a new line. So if I was to write this: "I'm a teacher", then I would put my next sentence here. This is not how to make a paragraph. This is "point form". So this is a bad paragraph. What I'm going to do is I'm going to write until I almost reach the end of the page. Don't write past the end of the page because then you're writing on the desk and it gets messy. So "I am a teacher. My name is Ronnie. I live -- so I'm going to use up all of my line until the end -- I live in Canada." What would you like to know about Canada? "Canada is very cold." In the winter. So as you can see by my example, I only stop my sentence at the end of my paper. I don't use each sentence on each line. So four basic things to remember when you're writing a basic English paragraph. The first one is: Indent the first line of your paragraph only. Use a capital letter at the beginning of each new line or each new sentence. And use a period at the end. Also, don't forget: Don't use point form. "I am a teacher. My name is Ronnie. I live in Canada. Canada is very cold. Go to 'Subscribe' on YouTube so you can find more great lessons like this." Goodbye.

What Shakespeare's English Sounded Like - and how we know

06:34
Botched rhymes, buried puns and a staged accent that sounds more Victorian than Elizabethan. No more! Use linguistic sleuthing to dig up the surprisingly different sound of the bard's Early Modern English. Subscribe for language: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=NativLang Be my patron: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=584038 ~ Briefly, and without spoilers ~ I'm embarrassed to admit that this is the first time I ever really got into Shakespeare. There's a personal story here, which I'll quickly share in the video. The idea of reconstructing his pronunciation intrigued me. As I started making trips to the library and downloading old grammars, I just found the questions piling on. I did find some answers for you. It starts with his odd spelling - well, the spelling he inherited. Chaucer's medieval spelling was followed by modern sound changes, including the start of the Great Vowel Shift. The introduction of Caxton's printing press and the spelling debates put Early Modern English in a state of flux by Shakespeare's time. They also left our first trail of evidence. Other evidence comes from rhythm, rhymes and - more reluctantly - puns. Many of these don't work the same way anymore, from the rhymes like "sea" and "prey" to the rhythm of "housewifery". Modern dialects add another layer of evidence, at times preserving features that standard English accents, notably RP, have lost. The sound of his language is also shaped by his grammar. His use of "thou" and his third-person "-th" vs "-s" verb endings always stand out to English speakers. Finally, though data-crunchers challenge his legendary status as king of all the words, we consider how innovative he was in the way he used words. We end with a note on linguist David Crystal's Original Pronunciation ("OP") experiment at the reconstructed Globe Theatre, and some thoughts on what studying Shakespeare's sounds as a different pronunciation system says about him and about us. ~ Credits ~ Narration, art and animation by Josh from NativLang.
