No more Shamu -- SeaWorld to end breeding of killer whales

09:01
SeaWorld has made headlines several times in the past decade: trainer Dawn Brancheau was killed by a captive orca during a live show in 2010, and a 2013 documentary focused intense scrutiny on the family-oriented theme park over the use of killer whales as show animals. On Thursday, SeaWorld announced that it would no longer breed orcas or train them for theatrics. Jeffrey Brown reports.

SeaWorld killer whale shows at San Diego park to end, no more orca shows by late 2016 - TomoNews

09:31
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA — San Diego SeaWorld has announced its decision to end killer whale shows by the end of next year. These majestic and adorable whales put on quite a show, but many have come to believe orca — or killer whale — performances are not in the best interests of either the whales or their human trainers. On November 10, 2015, SeaWorld’s chief executive Joel Manby, said San Diego’s "theatrical killer whale experience" will end in late 2016. The company says it will replace the famous "Shamu Show" with a new orca experience that will be focused on the “natural environment” of the whales. The 2013 documentary, Blackfish, might have had a lot more to do with SeaWorld’s decision than they’d care to admit. Focusing on the 12,000 pound bull orca Tilikum, the film showed his capture in 1983 off the coast of Iceland, explored his possible harassment by fellow captive orcas, and documented the circumstances that led to Tilikum’s involvement in the death of three humans. When released, SeaWorld was highly displeased with the film, calling it "inaccurate," "misleading," and "distorted," but Blackfish seems to have changed a lot of minds about keeping orcas in captivity. SeaWorld is not planning on releasing any of its captive creatures and will stop the shows only at its San Diego Park — which saw visitor numbers drop 17% last year. Killer whale theatrical performances will continue at SeaWorld Parks in San Antonio and Orlando. What do you think? Is it time to end making whales jump around for our amusement? Or is this issue not quite so black and white? Is SeaWorld genuinely changing? Or is this just a P.C. PR move to placate animal-huggers in California? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. 5 Things SEAWORLD Doesn't Want You To Know!

I have always been of the opinion that animals are meant to roam free in the wild and not trapped in a cage doing tricks at the pleasure of bystanders. And yes, that includes the animals at SeaWorld. Lots of information about all the horrible things that happen to animals at SeaWorld keep floating around on the internet but the place always seems to be packed with visitors. Regardless, here are 5 Things SEAWORLD Doesn't Want You To Know! Ready to be shocked? Well, lets begin! 1. SeaWorld Has Killed Orcas in the Wild 2. Orcas Stolen From Their Families 3. Kids Say, "No More Sea World!"

Sea World is designed for kids and parents who truly believe they are doing such a good thing by showing their children all the sea creatures. Well, Sea World is NOT designed for these beautiful sea creatures! The movie Blackfish is my favourite documentary of ALL time. (I've watched it about 8 times already) and if you want me to watch Blackfish with you, I WILL! It's available on Netflix, iMovie and on their website. No More Breeding Captive Killers For SeaWorld

00:42
SeaWorld was given the green light Thursday for a $100 million expansion of its tanks used to hold killer whales in San Diego but was banned from breeding any captive orcas. The California Coastal Commission approved the growth of the park’s Shamu “killer whale” facility. Parts of the old facility, built in 1995 will be demolished to make room for a 5.2-million gallon tank and a 450,000-gallon pool. The expanded “Blue World” exhibit is set to open in 2018. http://www.buzzfeed.com/christinacocca/seaworld-can-expand-whale-tanks-in-california-if-i?utm_term=4ldqpia http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Orca shows at SeaWorld will be banned if a new California Bill, introduced by Assemblyman Richard Bloommight, gets passed. The bill, which would shut down Shamu stadium, is meant to put an end to keeping orcas in captivity for the purpose of human entertainment. Lissette Padilla and Mark Sovel discuss the problem with keeping these complex whales in confinement, in this clip from the Lip News. Sea level rise can no longer be stopped, so it is urgent that we commence intelligent adaptation as a high priority, argues John Englander. Subscribe for regular science videos: http://bit.ly/RiSubscRibe John's book "High Tide On Main Street: Rising Sea Level and the Coming Coastal Crisis" is available to buy now: https://geni.us/wQ41O1m Rising sea level will permanently alter coastlines and is perhaps the most profound long-term aspect of climate change affecting coastal communities everywhere, as well as the global economy. The phenomenon is often overshadowed by short-term flood events, though it will elevate those too. In this talk, oceanographer and author John Englander highlights some surprising scientific aspects of sea level rise, including the latest projections for the coming decades, eventually many meters above present. 13 Things Aquariums Are Hiding From You

08:34
Do you like visiting aquariums? They are loved by many. They make it possible for people to get acquainted with marine creatures they would otherwise never see. Unfortunately, not everything is so bright about the very concept of aquariums and marine parks. When the documentary "Blackfish" came out, the image of such entertainment establishments underwent a serious damage. Visitors often have a misconception that trainers in aquariums are specialists in marine biology. After all, they have such extensive knowledge about these creatures! Totally wrong. People who interact with animals and participate in shows are only performers. They have no professional credentials about orcas or other marine animals. They’re simply hired to entertain the crowd. #dolphinshow #aquarium #dolphins TIMESTAMPS: Orcas are starved 0:45 People who work with orcas get killed 1:07 Orcas live shorter lives in captivity 1:51 Orcas have to live in tiny tanks 2:27 A collapsed dorsal fin isn't normal 3:17 Drugs are used on killer whales 3:52 Killer whales have problems with their teeth 4:25 Employees paint over the whales' sunburns 4:46 The trainers are not marine biologists 5:23 Captive orcas injure other animals 5:51 They artificially breed killer whales 6:20 Orcas are hurt by chlorine 7:08 Gelatin is used to keep orcas hydrated 7:37 Preview photo credit: Killer whale and trainer during a Shamu performance at Seaworld in Orlando, Florida: By Loadmaster (David R. Tribble), CC BY-SA 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=9576553 Animation is created by Bright Side. Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Giving a treat is a typical approach while training an animal. But unfortunately, these treats seem to serve as usual food. Employees are instructed to keep the orcas hungry. - In the wild, male orcas live for 70 years, while the females’ lifespan is even longer: 100 years. But in captivity, orcas don't have a chance to enjoy a long happy life. In most cases, they die as teenagers, usually after they turn just 13 years old. - The tanks these animals live in are immensely small for them. In fact, the length of one tank is one-millionth of the distance an adult orca can cross a day in the ocean. - In the wild, only 1% of all orcas suffer from problems with their fins. And if they do, it means they're sick or injured. - If orca misbehaves or gets too excited, trainers force-feed it sedative drugs. - To prevent the public from asking questions about the change of color on the whales’ skin, trainers cover their sunburns with zinc oxide. This substance is black and does a good job at masking the horror. - People who interact with animals and participate in shows are only performers. They have no professional credentials about orcas or other marine animals. - When orcas live in captivity for prolonged periods of time, they become extremely aggressive. But they don’t just hurt the trainers; they fight each other and other animals as well. - Chlorine levels in tanks are way too high and damage the health of the animals kept in them. As a result of all the chlorine, killer whales have mucus running from their eyes and problems with their vision. SeaWorld To Stop Killer Whale Shows

Amid ongoing public criticism and regulatory pressure, the amusement park company announced that it will phase out its "theatrical" killer whale show in 2016, and debut a "new orca experience" the following year, one that promises a more "natural" setting "We start everything by listening to our guests and evolving our shows to what we’re hearing, and so far that’s what we’ve been hearing in California, they want experiences that are more natural and experiences that look more natural in the environment," CEO Joel Manby told investors Monday, the San Diego Tribune reported. I'm pissed. As far as I'm away the last tank expancion in the seaworld parks was in 1984 when SeaWorld Florida opened their new Shamu Stadium. That was 34 years ago... No more rides. No more restaurants. No more pins. Expand tanks for animals NOT under BREEDING BANS!

Sea World Public DEBATE with Animal Activist Scientists recorded on 6/5/2014

01:54:11
Since the release of the 2013 documentary "Blackfish," SeaWorld has tried everything in its power to divert attention away from its shady business operation, which most recently, has included the use of psychoactive drugs on its orcas and the impregnation of ANOTHER female orca before her appropriate breeding age. Open letters denouncing "Blackfish" were penned, videos from SeaWorld supporters were released, and the entertainment giant even created its own volunteer "Truth Team," to show the world that SeaWorld isn't guilty of anything and to protect our "privilege" of "experiencing marine mammals up close in ways that are educational, inspirational and that advance science." So, let's get this straight — we now have a right to take away another's chance at freedom because we are "privileged" to see them? Debatable, SeaWorld, debatable, along with pretty much everything else the company has said. Yet, surprisingly, SeaWorld has finally decided to engage in a public discussion even though, at the start of 2014, the company quickly wimped out of a public debate challenge initiated by the team from "Blackfish" and the Oceanic Preservation Society (makers of "The Cove" and the upcoming eco-thriller "6"). Quietly announced on EventBrite, The Voice of San Diego posted ticketing information for a panel discussion to be held on June 5, 2014 that will be focused on the following question: What does SeaWorld offer San Diego and how do we balance animal rights concerns with the company's contributions in our region? Diego's "Blackfish bill," which was introduced by California Assemblymember Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) earlier this year. While it will be great to see SeaWorld finally speaking more directly to the public about its operations, the panel discussion already has the markings of the company's other shaky PR gimmicks. First off, the event is not called a debate, but rather a panel, and out of the four panelists, only one is considered "counter" to SeaWorld's mission. The event page lists the following speakers: •Naomi Rose, marine mammal scientist with the D.C.-based Animal Welfare Institute; she was a key consultant for "Blackfish" and likely helped craft the so-called Blackfish bill; •Susan Gray Davis, former UC San Diego professor who wrote a book about SeaWorld San Diego and can speak to local contributions; •SeaWorld Senior Trainer •SeaWorld Veterinarian/ Researcher Who the SeaWorld trainer and veterinarian/researcher are remains to be seen, but looks like it's a case of three against one. If there was any interest for a real public debate concerning marine mammal captivity, then the panel would have been more balanced instead of one-sided (although, it should be noted, that Naomi Rose is a strong voice of support for the anti-captivity movement, yet she is still just one voice from this side). What's more, the panel discussion seems like just another attempt to get SeaWorld out of the deep, consuming water that is the "Blackfish Effect" (which has resulted in protests along with a drop in attendance in early 2014), as can be concluded by the panel's very narrow, SeaWorld-tailored question on what the company offers San Diego. True, the remainder of the question mentions a potential jumping off point for animal rights topics ("how do we balance animal rights concerns with the company's contributions in our region?"), however it's main focus is on how SeaWorld benefits San Diego — not the welfare of its orcas and trainers, which is where the real debate needs to stem from. It seems we'll all just have to wait and see what happens with this panel discussion (hopefully there will be some progress — we've been waiting, SeaWorld, c'mon, now!), but in the mean time, tell us what you think with a comment below -- do you believe this debate is a good thing or will it be just another one of SeaWorld's attempts to twist the truth? Orca Experts Go to SeaWorld

03:57
John Hargrove and Dr. Ingrid Visser know killer whales better than anyone --- they've both been swimming with them for decades. They're also both outspoken advocates for orca welfare and conservation. We went to SeaWorld with them, saw some harrowing things, and caused a bit of a scene. This video is part of an ongoing documentary project called SUPERPOD. It's about an endangered wild population of salmon-eating killer whales, and how their decline is a warning that the Pacific Northwest ecosystem is on the brink of collapse. STILL NOT SURE HOW WE FEEL ABOUT SEA WORLD

18:42
It's day five of our amazing holiday in Orlando Florida and we're off to Sea World. Now honestly, we weren't too sure if we wanted to visit Sea World, especially after watching the documentary Blackfish however a free ticket and our curiosity to discover if it has changed much took us to the theme park. For us, the Shamoo show seemed to be very different from when we were children as they no longer have the trainers in the water with the Orchids however the fact they still have the killer Wales in captivity will certainly stop us from returning until Sea World stop Shamoo. Thank you for watching. Subscribe: https://bit.ly/2Qu3mOO 🔔Turn on ALL push notifications 🔔 Orkid has been imprisoned for decades. She's watched other orcas die in front of her, dragged trainers into the water, and never had even a taste of freedom. But Orkid's story isn't unique. #SeaWorld enslaves many animals in small tanks at marine parks around the country, where they're forced to perform tricks for food. It's a business built on the suffering of intelligent, social animals who are denied everything that is natural and important to them. As a result, animals imprisoned by SeaWorld often die prematurely from captivity-related causes, including ones related to stress. In the wild, orcas are intelligent predators who work cooperatively in search of food. They share intricate relationships in a matrilineal society. In some populations, orcas rarely leave their mother's pod, but at SeaWorld, they are often separated. Free orcas are among the fastest animals in the sea, and they swim as far as 100 miles every day. But at SeaWorld, orcas swim in endless circles or float listlessly in small, barren concrete tanks.
