Inflammation, Joint Pain, and Aged Skin High sugar foods have been shown to lead to inflammation in the body, which can increase the susceptibility of individuals to these diseases and can also worsen symptoms for those already suffering from them. Scientific surveys have also found that increased sugar consumption, in particular sugar filled soda, may increase the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis and may worsen symptoms (RA). 1,2 The inflammation caused by sugar not only impacts our health, but also our skins look and feel. When sugars attached to proteins in your bloodstream, advanced glycation end products, or AGEs, are formed. These harmful molecules age your skin through causing damage to the elastin and collagen. This leads to more wrinkles and sagging skin.3 2. Heart Health When you consume simple sugars, the boost of insulin in the bloodstream can cause artery walls to grow faster than normal and lose their elasticity. Over time, this can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and heart disease. Additionally, research suggests that consuming less sugar may help to lower blood pressure, which is a major heart disease risk factor. Studies have found that those who eat a lot of sugar (25% or more of their calories as added sugar) are twice as likely to die of heart disease when compared to those who consume 10% or less of their total calories from sugar.4 Sugar’s Effect on the Brain 1. Addiction Sugar shares many similarities with drugs of abuse. In rat studies sugar has been found to lead to signs of dopamine sensitization and opioid dependence, including cross-sensitization with alcohol and amphetamine, neurochemical and behavioral signs of withdrawal, and alterations in dopamine and my-opioid receptors.6 When you eat sugar, you brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that causes you to feel good. Whole foods, even fruits, do not cause the release of the same quantity of dopamine as processed, sugary foods, such as donuts. As time goes on, your sensitivity to dopamine decreases, causing your brain to need more to feel the same amount of pleasure. This is what causes addiction cravings to sugar. 2. Depression Studies have linked high sugar consumption to depression risk in adults. This leads to the following question: does sugar lead to depression, or does depression influence sugar intake? Case Study: Sugar Impacts and Adverse Effect on Long-Term Psychological Health 7 In a 2017 study published in Scientific Reports, researchers sought to determine if sugar consumption leads to common mental disorder (CMD) and depression or if the reverse is true, that individuals suffering from CMD and depression are more likely to eat sugary foods. Through analysis of repeated measures for 23,245 person-observations from the Whitehall II study, mood was assessed using validated questionnaires and diet through food frequency questionnaires. Researchers found that neither depression not CMD predicted the intake changes found during their analysis where positive associations between sugar consumption and CMD and depression were found. This led the researchers to conclude that dietary sugar intake has an adverse effect on long-term psychological health, including both CMD and depression. So How Much Sugar is too Much? Currently the average adult consumes roughly 22 teaspoons of added sugar per day, which is far more than the American Heart Association recommends: no more than 6 t/day for women and 9 t/day for men.5 Remember that this is added sugar, so not the natural sugars found in fruits, References: 1. If you’re going to get your dairy on, Low-fat unflavored greek yogurt, keifer, and grass fed whey protein are the best. If you’re going to drink milk, make sure it’s organic. Creatine: How to Best Use It for Muscle Growth (Avoid Side Effects)!
Creatine is one of the few supplements out there that is actually well-backed by research in terms of its effectiveness. However, there’s a lot of confusion out there as to how to take creatine and how creatine works. In terms of “what does creatine do”, it simply allows a faster regeneration of ATP in our muscles. Since ATP is the main form of energy for our muscles, this enables us to perform an extra rep or two during our training. As for the best creatine to take and how to use creatine effectively, stick to creatine monohydrate and take your creatine with your post-workout meal. There seems to be a slight benefit to taking creatine post-workout, and it actually drastically improves its effectiveness by taking creatine with carbohydrates and protein. Now as for whether creatine causes hair loss or other side effects, research is inconclusive at the moment. Long-term creatine supplementation does not cause any adverse health effects but may increase DHT which is a hormone that accelerates male pattern baldness in those who are susceptible or have it in their family history. Thus, those who are susceptible may want to consider that. But more research is definitely needed – the findings aren’t as serious as many people make it out to be. In this video, I explain to you 5 reasons you need to take supplements and when you never should take them. If you can’t deal with brutal honesty however, I would advise you not to watch, as some feelings may be hurt. To determine whether or not you are a candidate for supplementation you have to start with your experience level and current condition. If you are just starting out and are relegated to lifting 5 pound dumbbells for most of your exercises, you are likely not ready for supplements. You can gain far more benefits focusing on building up your strength and foundation while learning proper form and the best way to train than with stuffing your face with supplements. The same can be said if you have allowed your diet and nutrition to put you grossly overweight. Supplements are not your savior. You first must figure out how to rededicate yourself to your nutrition so that you can lose enough weight to make supplements a viable part of the discussion once again to take you and your results to the next level. Next you have to ask yourself if you are motivated enough to take supplements. Some people view supplementation as a way to be lax with the rest of their fitness and nutrition plan. They figure that as long as they are taking the supplements that they don’t have to worry much about everything else. Couldn’t be further from the truth. On the other hand, sometimes the act of supplementing makes you much more accountable for the rest of your actions. In this case, it can be a great advantage to helping you stay on track. If stress is a big part of your life, be it from your work or family, supplements can become even more necessary to help keep you on track and combat that. We all know that proper nutrition and fueling can go a long way towards helping your body fight fatigue and breakdown. That’s because ‘prime cut’ suggests that it is a single cut of the best meat from the animal. But this isn’t the case in many restaurants. Actually, what if I told you they chop up all the leftover meat and glue it back together? Does the word transglutaminase ring a bell? This is the name for the meat glue they use to glue the low quality meat back together to make you think you’re getting a full piece. This is more than a lie, this is disgusting. Besides the fact that it is using the worst tiny cuts of meat, it’s made from ammonia. The stuff used in fertilizers and oven cleaners. They try to fight back by claiming it kills E Coli, which should not be something we should be worried about being on meat anyway. Justifying making people unknowingly eat ammonia just so they can pass off scrap meat does not seem ethical in the least. Be very careful where you eat your steak! See, this is why being a vegetarian seems like a safer option! Or maybe seafood…. #9 Imitation Crab Or maybe not seafood. For one, crustaceans feed off the worst possible debris on the bottom of the ocean. The only nastier creature is shrimp. This stuff they eat doesn’t magically disappear when they are caught and cooked either. There’s still…stuff in it that we eat…secondhand. Nevertheless, it’s expensive to buy fresh crab and shrimp, but you can get crab cakes and other delicacies at the grocery store for a pretty good price. Why? It’s usually because it is fake, under the guise of imitation crab meat. Imitation crab meat is made from the remains of other fish that are mushed together, and injected into a mold. They mince and mince random fish, whatever they can get their hands on, until it turns into the same texture as crab. It is then created into a paste that is frozen and then shaved into crab-like flakes. To make it taste like crab, they just add flavor and paint it to look like crab. So, next time you go for some cheap crab, remember that’s probably, beaten, frozen, shaved, and painted fish remains. I kind of like imitation crab but not really a fan of this process...it still tastes good so if you’re okay with this…then go ahead. #8 Parmesan Cheese Parmesan cheese is delicious! Especially, real authentic parmesan cheese. But did you know that companies will usually lie about what’s in “parmesan”? The FDA regulations make it legal to sell fake Parmesan cheese. This is some scary stuff. There are two huge deal breakers with parmesan. One is grated parmesan in the shaker. Most of the time, cellulose and mold inhibitor chemicals are added so it won’t clump. Cellulose, not cellulite, that’s just an after effect. Cellulose comes from ground up wood pulp and is considered “harmless and organic matter”. They usually add 2-4% cellulose, but the FDA doesn’t restrict it. In fact, some has been proven to carry 20%! That’s a lot of cellulose on your pasta! The saddest part is, this is just allowed in the United States. Parmesan cheese legally means the kind of cheese that comes from Parma, Italy. But in the US, you can call it parmesan when it’s just dehydrated, grated mozzarella. This is like the Kobe beef of cheeses. Most of the time, when you get parmesan, it’s not parmesan. It’s cellulose and a mixture of cheap cheeses. #7 Egg Substitute This one is a little different. No one knows what it is, but many believe that it’s a great substitute for people with egg allergies. But really, it’s still just eggs. They take mostly egg whites, fresh, frozen, or powdered, and add other ingredients. But not much. They actually just contain 99% egg whites! There’s not actually much substituting going on. It might be easier for people who don’t want to go to the trouble dealing with egg shells and yolks slipping everywhere, etc. In reality, it is called egg substitute because of that 1% that’s just artificial coloring, salt, onion powder, and who knows what else. Why? Why would they just flavor egg whites? “Egg substitute” is kind of misleading and should be for people with egg allergies who need a substitute. It shouldn’t just be eggs. Maybe it’s substituting something else? Is it the bottle substituting for the shell? Bottom line is…this isn’t egg substitute, it’s just expensive eggs.

4 Types of Toxic Cookware to Avoid and 4 Safe Alternatives
We all know the importance of eating healthy, but not everyone knows that the cookware you use to prepare your dishes is just as important as the food itself. Even the healthiest diet can result in severe health problems if your pots and pans are toxic. Find out which cookware you should avoid by all means for the sake of your own health and the health of your family. The non-stick properties of Teflon cookware are achieved with a coating of PTFE. This is a plastic polymer that, when heated above 572°F, starts to release toxins. These toxic fumes lead to flu-like symptoms called polymer fume fever, informally known as Teflon flu. Another chemical compound found in Teflon cookware is especially threatening since it tends to stay in the body (as well as in the environment) for long periods of time. Try cast-iron cookware instead. It even comes in non-stick varieties. It doesn't leak anything toxic into your food and is actually a nice natural way to increase your body’s iron levels. Though aluminum cookware is usually coated, the coating is prone to chipping, allowing the toxic metal to get right into your food. As for aluminum foil, using it while cooking is even more dangerous. In fact, there’s an established safe amount of aluminum the human body can manage daily, and that’s 20 mg per pound of body weight a day. When you wrap your food in aluminum foil and cook it this way, the amount of this substance that leaks into the food significantly exceeds the permissible level. Consider using glass cookware instead. If you’ve just enjoyed some fish in lemon juice or stewed tomatoes cooked in an uncoated copper pot and you find yourself suffering from extremely unpleasant symptoms (such as vomiting blood, light-headedness, yellowy skin, or gastrointestinal distress, among others) call 911 immediately. Try this safe alternative instead: stainless steel. Just make sure you're buying food-grade stainless steel since this is the only type that doesn't contain any nickel or chromium. Soft ceramic coating isn't durable enough and starts chipping after a few months of daily use. When this happens, lead and cadmium sometimes found in the coating will end up in your food and, thus, in your body. Lead poisoning is one of the most dangerous types of metal poisoning and can result in abdominal pain, headaches, infertility, and other health complications. Try this safe alternative instead: 100% ceramic cookware. Oil Pulling: I use this as an extra step for fresh breath. This is NOT a replacement for brushing and flossing. Right when I wake up, I mix virgin unrefined coconut oil with Healthy Gum Drops by Living Libations. After swishing it around for 20 minutes while I get ready in the morning, I spit out the coconut oil (where it won't clog my drain) and use a homemade saltwater rinse. Check with your dentist before trying this method, especially if you have issues with your gums. 2. Coconut Oil + Sea Salt Scrub: I mix 1 part coconut oil with 2 parts sea salt and add a few drops of essential oil or whatever I have on hand to make it smell nice and add to the experience. In this video, I used Seabuckthorn Best Skin Ever by Living Libations (this video is not sponsored, I just like their products). Use the concoction to thoroughly scrub your body then sit down in a nice warm bath and enjoy your soak! 3. Skin Soother: I like to use coconut oil as an aftershave to avoid razor bumps and inflammation, I also try to wear clothes that won't rub up against the area and irritate it. I also use it on cuts and sunburns. We got video of Terry's actual cut from the bed but decided against using it because it was gross :P. 4. Leave-In Conditioner: I mix a small amount of coconut oil with a bit of conditioner and use it as a leave-in conditioner on the tips of my hair. Don't use too much because it can feel greasy. I try not to wash the end of my hair because they're very prone to drying out, but when I have to, I mix my shampoo with a bit of coconut oil just for the ends. 5. Coconut Coffee: Terry likes his coffee bullet-proof style with a teaspoon of coconut oil and a teaspoon of grass-fed butter. I like mine with a teaspoon of coconut oil and a teaspoon of honey for sweetness. I like drinking my coffee black, but it's too acidic and strong for me, especially when I'm on an empty stomach. 6. Boobie Oil: If your cotton bras are sucking all of the moisture out of your boobs, try throwing some coconut oil on there! Coconut oil is also a great massage oil. 7. Serum Sealer: I use coconut oil to seal all of my skincare after a good exfoliation, cleanse and serum application. It has a low SPF of about 4, so on days where I'm inside and don't want to put a ton of stuff on my face, I can feel a little bit protected. If I'm going outside, I'll use sunscreen or wear a hat instead :P. Make sure you do a patch test, because coconut oil agrees wholeheartedly with my skin, but it does not have that same impact on others. I feel like this method has also helped my eyelashes grow as long as they are right now! 8. Personal Lubricant: Incase you need some, coconut oil won't harm your natural flora which can lead to all sorts of discomfort. Make sure the oil meshes well with anything else you may be using and doesn't cause it to break down; latex, polyisoprene, and cheap rubber do not go well with coconut oil. 9. Cooking: I use coconut oil as a butter replacement, as a stir-fry oil with lemon and cilantro, to grease baking sheets, and even as a fat in salad dressing or smoothies. 10. Sticker Gunk Remover: I mix equal parts baking soda and coconut oil, throw it on the gunk and let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then use it as a little scrub to get sticker residue off. Natural resources are being depleted on a rapid scale while production and consumption are rising in na­tions like China and India. The waste production worldwide is enormous and if we do not do anything we will soon have turned all our resources into one big messy landfill. But there is hope. The German chemist Michael Braungart, and the American designer-architect William McDonough are fundamentally changing the way we produce and build. If waste would become food for the biosphere or the technosphere (all the technical products we make), produc­tion and consumption could become beneficial for the planet. A design and production concept that they call Cradle to Cradle. A concept that is seen as the next industrial revolution: design every product in such a way that at the end of its lifecycle the component materials become a new resource. But also design buildings in such a way that they produce energy and become a friend to the environment. Large companies like Ford and Nike are working with McDonough and Braun­gart to change their production facilities and their products. They realize that economically wise, waste is a destruction of capital. You make something with no value. Based on their ideas the Chinese government is working towards a circular economy where Waste = Food. This is due to the fact that American food companies artificially bleach the flour with a chemical compound called azodicarbonamide. - Chicken delivery from America’s largest meat manufacturer Tyson Foods is banned in the EU, Russia, Norway, Australia. - More than half the countries of Europe, including France, Germany, and Italy, banned genetically modified foods in 2015 because they can cause allergic reactions and introduce toxins into the body. - Potassium bromate is also known to cause headaches, skin rashes, digestive problems, and has even been linked to cancer. This was a valid reason for the EU, Canada, China, Australia, Brazil and some other countries to ban the use of potassium bromate in flour. - Today foods containing olestra are completely banned in Canada and Europe but still allowed in the USA. - E-443 is banned in Japan and Europe due to its toxicity. In very large quantities E-443 can produce bromism, which leads to a whole bunch of horrible symptoms, like seizures and psychosis. - American milk is totally banned is lots of countries. - The main reason for banning Kinder Surprise was the capsule that contains the toy. The American government decided that it's dangerous for kids to consume a product containing a non-edible element.
