These foods are extremely high in a type of xenoestrogen known as zearalenone or ZEA. ZEA is molecularly similar to estrogen and acts like estrogen in the body. One study examined the effect that ZEAs had on a drug called Letrozole, which is specifically designed to lower estrogen levels in the body. Bodybuilders will often take it get to really low levels of body fat. The researchers found that, even small amounts of ZEA negated the effects of Letrozole. That’s a powerful indicator of the estrogen boosting effect of all those ZEA’s that are found in wheat and grain products. As well as the ZEA problem, wheat also contains phytoestrogens. They’re found in the wheat germ which is the reproductive part of the wheat seed. These phytoestrogens will bind to estrogen receptor sites in your body’s cells. In a study that was designed to investigate the combined effect of wheat germ and a breast cancer treatment pharmaceutical it was noted that one of the side effects of wheat germ was that it increased estrogen receptor activity of MCF-7 cells. However, refined grain products remove the germ, making them slightly less of a problem when it comes to estrogen. Overall though, you should limit your consumption of wheat and grain based products. Our third estrogen food type to avoid is processed carbs and refined sugars. Hopefully, you’ve already cut back on these types of foods if you're trying to bring your body fat levels down. But there’s an extra reason to ditch these types of carbs. And it has to do with that powerful blood sugar regulating hormone, insulin. As well as causing you to store more body fat, insulin lowers your body’s levels of what is known as sex hormone binding globulin. The job of this globulin is to bind the two sex hormones, testosterone and estrogen, together. When it's doing its job properly, you will have limited amounts of free estrogen in your body. But, when it's stopped from doing its job, the opposite will be the case, your free estrogen levels will be much higher. It’s the insulin response that occurs when you eat refined sugar foods that causes the interference in the activity of sex hormone binding globulin. An interesting study that focused on women showed that drinking sugar laden sodas increased estrogen levels. The interesting thing was that increased estrogen levels did not occur with either diet sodas or fruit juices. Researchers believe this is due to the fact that diet sodas don’t contain refined sugar and fruit juice contains natural fruit sugars. Another estrogen related problem with sugar consumption is that, eating too much sugar leads to an increase in stored body fat. Fat cells excrete estrogen. So, the more fat cells that you have sitting around your body, the more estrogen you’ll have floating around as well. This is additional to the estrogen produced by the endocrine system. So, rather than reaching for a sweet sugar saturated treat, do your estrogen levels a favor and opt for foods that are high in proteins, fiber and healthy fats. Our fourth no go food for estrogen is beer. I know, this is a tough one. Now, I’m not saying you can’t drink it at all, but if you want to get really lean and maximize your muscle mass and strength, then you gotta’ cut back on the booze. Here’s why. You’d be right. That said, getting abs still remains rather elusive to many and certainly being able to maintain them year round is even harder. Not any more. In this video, I show you a 5 step plan for how to get a 6 pack that you can use to start getting your abs to show fast. Despite the fact that many are aware of the importance of proper nutrition when it comes to getting abs, it is still a mighty struggle to get them. It usually comes down to the methods those people are using to try and get them in the first place. Crash diet plans and temporary deprivation based tactics are not going to cut it long term if you want to get and keep your abs. Anything that forces you to feel as if you’re missing out or be deprived of what you really want is only going to be a temporary solution at best. As soon as you get tired of not having what you want, you’ll quickly give in and lose your ability to keep your hard earned abs. That said, the 5 step formula for getting a 6 pack starts with cutting out the obvious crap foods from your diet. You should know pretty quickly what these are. It’s the cakes, sweets, alcohol, fatty salad dressings, etc that just scream problems the minute you eat them. You know what they are and that means you know they should be gone, so do it. There’s never been a better time than now to start making the changes that are going to dramatically help you in your pursuit of your abs. Next step is to start eating more often. Yep, despite what keyboard scientists who read a few articles on google scholar want you to believe, there are far more important reasons to be eating more frequently throughout the day than whether or not this is maximally anabolic. I cover these for you in the video. Next up, you’re going to want to take another pass through that diet of yours. On this second time through, you’re going to want to remove the less obvious items that aren’t helping you as best they can to get your 6 pack abs. For me, I lay out three perfect examples. I thought these foods were healthy but I was only partially right. How they were being prepared was making all the difference in me seeing my abs consistently…or not. Moving on, you now want to eat more of the good foods you swapped in. This helps you to maintain and continue to build new muscle. Too often, people who take out the offending foods will free up many calories in their diet. If you don’t replace them with good foods you’ll likely wind up not supporting your muscle growth and be skinny without enough muscle mass. And if it’s pink, purple, or red, it’s most likely been colored with cochineal extract or carmine, additives which can cause bad allergic reactions. Functions include: Puberty changes in women Fertility Plays a role in controlling cholesterol levels Helps bone health Affects the brain, including mood Also affects the heart, skin and other body tissues Affects heart and blood vessels In males, the maturation of sperm and labido maintenance Estrogen is produced by the ovaries, fat tissue, testis and adrenal glands. There are three kinds of estrogen: Estradiol - the primary kind of estrogen found in women during their fertile years Primarily produced in the ovaries, but also the placenta and adrenal glands Excess estradiol is implicated in many diseases, such as cancers and fibroids Found in both women and men Estriol - the estrogen associated with pregnancy A waste product of estrogen metabolism Estrone - the estrogen produced postmenopause Produced in tissues throughout the body, mainly fat and muscle tissues Known as the weakest form of estrogen Found in both women and men Estrogen levels change: Throughout the month when fertile, with peak estrogen in the middle of a woman’s menstrual cycle, signalling ovulation, and the lowest levels while bleeding. Estrogen levels drop after menopause. The good metabolites, 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE), are estrogen antagonists. They have high antioxidant activity, providing protection for the heart and brain. The bad metabolites, 16-hydroxyestrone (16-OHE), are estrogen agonists. They have been implicated in causing cancer and weight gain. Therapies that increase the 2-OHE:16-OHE ratio are thought to decrease the risk for a number of estrogen-responsive cancers. Natural compounds found in food have been founds to be antiestrogenic and thus are being further explored to discover how to capture these benefits for possible cancer prevention and treatment. DIM (Diindolylmethane) DIM is a stable compound derived from the plant indole I3C (indole-3-carbinol) found in cruciferous vegetables. Dietary indoles found in cruciferous veggies such as broccoli and cabbage, have been found to exhibit chemoprotective and chemotherapeutic properties against many cancers. Its benefit has to do with hormone balancing. I3C has been found to decrease estrogen signaling and alter estrogen metabolism, leading to a reduced production of “bad” estrogen metabolites. DIM consumption has been linked to an increase in the production of the “good” estrogen metabolites and thus a resulting decrease in the production of the “bad” estrogen metabolites. -Increases the 2-OHE:16-OHE ratio One study on women with thyroid proliferative disease (TPD) found that supplemental DIM enhanced estrogen metabolism in such a way as to act as a dietary antiestrogenic supplement and in this way may decrease the likelihood of women to develop TPD. DIM has other hormone balancing properties and can contribute to more balanced hormones. -This more beneficial hormone balance can lead to a healthier metabolism The hormonal balance influence of DIM also positively impacts testosterone. He may be the king of food challenges, but Adam Richman didn't triumph over every one of his competitive eating contests. Here are some of the more insane food challenges that even Richman — the mighty man of Man Versus Food himself — couldn't beat. Adam Richman's first on-air defeat went down on season one, episode two in Memphis, Tennessee, and we're guessing that first loss hurt worse than the others. Richman attempted to beat a burger challenge at The Big Foot Lodge, a lively local burger joint that was famous for its big portions. The Big Foot Challenge involves polishing off a whopping 7.5-pound burger in under 60 minutes. Before Richman, 1,300 hopeful eaters had attempted the challenge and only four had succeeded. He started out strong, gleefully gobbling half of the burger within the first 20 minutes. Within another 20 minutes, however, the fearless foodie had slowed down. Richman stood up to catch his breath before throwing in the towel with about a quarter of the burger still on the plate. Since the episode aired, more than 4,000 have attempted the challenge, and only 23 have finished it. Down in the central Texas town of Austin, Richman faced the Don Juan Challenge on season one, episode five. The tex-mex trial took place at Juan in a Million, an unassuming Mexican eatery that has been a eastside breakfast go-to since the '80s. The Mexican restaurant is renowned for its Don Juan El Taco Grande, a hearty, three-quarter-pound pile of potato, egg, bacon, and cheese wrapped in a warm, six-inch flour tortilla. To beat the Don Juan Challenge, Richman had to break the record held by the previous champion, who had devoured a whopping seven tacos in one sitting. In his attempt to consume eight tacos, Adam took advantage of the fact that the competition had no time limit and took a lengthy siesta after his fourth taco. He started on taco number five two hours into the competition, and eventually realized he wouldn't be able to finish it in time for closing. Not wanting to keep any of the staff late, Richman nobly ceded the competition. Still, the owner's son, Juan Meza Jr. graciously awarded Richman "Celebrity Host Champion" for his valiant efforts. And for those of you are are really concerned about having high cholesterol -- the PRIMARY cause of high cholesterol is AGING and the change in your hormones!!! This is why the older you get, the worse your cholesterol levels. This is why women who go through menopause start having high cholesterol. Again, it all comes down to a hormonal imbalance!!! What MATTERS is WHERE you get your fats. Don’t go fry up some bacon and think this is healthy. Most animal and dairy fats are the problem. Heating oils, processed vegetable fats, hydrogenated and trans fats are the problem. Instead, have HEALTHY fats. Have free range eggs WITH the yolk. In this video I’m taking you on a full burger review comparison between In-N-Out and Five Guys, two burger chains with extremely loyal followings. In-N-Out Burger I ordered the Double Double and extra crispy fries. Now to keep things consistent for the review, I couldn’t go all crazy with their secret menu of toppings, so all I ordered was extra onions. Prices - Double Double - $3.85, Extra crispy fries - $1.80 The Double Double from In-N-Out is indeed extremely tasty and salty and it has an amazing balance of tastes and everything goes together in such harmony. However, after finishing the Double Double I walked away still quite hungry. Five Guys Next we drove over to Five Guys, luckily just a 5 minute drive from In-N-Out Burger. Again, I kept it pretty simple and just ordered their cheeseburger all the way, and a side of regular fries. You’ll notice immediately that the prices are twice as high as In-N-Out, however, we’ll find out that their burger weight probably twice as much as well. Prices - Cheeseburger - $7.99, Fries - $4.29 The Five Guys Cheeseburger is heavy and dense, and they already press down the bun for you, so it’s not fluffy at all. The ingredients inside are great, and I especially enjoyed the mushrooms inside. The burger is definitely not as salty as In-N-Out, however it tastes better quality. VERDICT: It sort of depends on what mood you’re in, and you do have to take into account that Five Guys is twice as expensive as In-N-Out - so you could eat two Double Doubles for the same price as one Five Guys cheeseburger. I think the In-N-Out Double Double is tastier, possibly because it’s saltier, but the Five Guys burger tastes fresher, more natural, and a little more home-cooked styles. Overall, I would choose Five Guys more often than In-N-Out Burger. That’s my final verdict. What about you? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below! It was one of the greatest food days I had in Mexico, and we tasted so many incredible dishes. La Esquina del Chilaquil - For breakfast in La Condesa, there’s no better place to check out than La Esquina del Chilaquil, their tortas are delicious. Price - 40 MXN ($2.14) each Mercado de San Juan - I wanted to quickly check out this market, but it wasn’t all that busy when we went - there wasn’t too much going on. So we had a quick scorpion and then continued on to the ultimate street food market. Scorpion - 160 MXN ($8.54) for 4 Mercado de La Merced - Mexico City is packed with street food, but if you want a food experience that’s busy, in your face, and always exciting and delicious, Mercado de la Merced is one of the greatest places to start. You’ll encounter massive amounts of street food that will blow your mind with how delicious they are. Here are the things we ate at the market: Quesadilla - 57 MXN ($3.04) for 3 Fries tacos - 20 MXN ($1.07) each Pancita - 40 MXN ($2.14) per bowl Pambazo Mamey - 15 MXN ($0.80) Mango - 15 MXN ($0.80) Churrería El Moro - This wasn’t street food, but we needed a little afternoon break, and there’s no better spot in Mexico City for churros than Churrería El Moro. Total price - 439 MXN ($23.44) for all Esquites - 20 MXN ($1.07) - After walking around El Zocalo - the center of Mexico City, we then had a corn snack os esquites where they add corn, mayo, cheese, and chili salsas to a cup. It’s pretty tasty. Loncheria La Rambla - Next we tried a Mexican style turkey sandwich - it was alright, but not the best food of the day. Torta de pavo - 35 MXN ($1.87) each Taquería Los Cocuyos - And finally to end this Mexico City street food tour with 5 Mexican Guys, we headed to Taquería Los Cocuyos, a legendary taco stall in the heart of the center of the city. Dear Dr. La Puma, My husband just received his results from his cholesterol check. It came back really high. I’d like to know what kinds of food I can make to help him lower his cholesterol. He doesn’t want to be on medicine and would like to change his diet first. Please help! Nancy, I don’t blame him that’s a good idea. He should change his diet first. The good news is you really can do something about your cholesterol if it is high. I assume that his total cholesterol is high and with it his LDL cholesterol or what we call lousy cholesterol. Lousy cholesterol or LDL cholesterol is what you want to lower. The food to do that is nuts, mixed nuts, whether they are almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews or walnuts. They all lower LDL cholesterol. Flax meal, soy food, sterol margarines like Benacol, Take Control, and even Smart Balance also lower LDL cholesterol. Foods that are high in soluble fiber like oatmeal and cinnamon may lower cholesterol, too. The foods that raise bad cholesterol, lousy cholesterol (LDL) – you already know them. They are high in solid fat, saturated fat and trans fat for example cheeses, most meats, butters, creams, pastries, anything that looks the same three year after you bought it-( if it is a cracker) it has trans-fat in it and it will raise your LDL. For your husband though, the good news is a little red wine. Red wine raises his healthy cholesterol (HDL). Omega rich fish, salmon, tuna, herring, sardines and more also raise healthy cholesterol or HDL. Thanks for writing. I’d like to know what you are eating.
