The luckiest man in World War ll (full length documentary)

45:27
World war two's luckiest man revealed Channel 5 During the Second World War Alistair Urquhart was captured by the Japanese, tortured, starved and sent to work on the Death Railway in Thailand. After years in the camp he was loaded onto an airless cargo ship which was torpedoed by an American submarine. Alistair was one of the sole survivors - and drifted alone for days in the South China Sea before being picked up by a ship -- a Japanese Whaling vessel. Half dead he was sent to a Japanese prisoner of war camp again. Continuing his thread of bad luck, the camp was in Nagasaki where Alistair bore witness to the devastation of the world's second atom bomb. This one hour film is the heart-wrenching, personal testimonial of 91 year old Alistair Urquhart set against the backdrop of the little known war in the Far East. The forgotten Highlander.

Seale Hayne in Devon was a military hospital which played an incredible role in curing shell shock victims during The Great War. At the time, most shell shock victims were treated harshly and with little sympathy as their symptoms were not understood and they were seen as a sign of weakness. So instead of receiving proper care, many victims endured more trauma with treatments such as solitary confinement or electric shock therapy. However, one doctor called Arthur Hurst believed he could cure every shell shock victim. He took them to Seale Hayne which was deep in the Devon countryside and there he used revolutionary treatments such as hypnosis, persuasion, massage and dietary treatments to cure his patients. In fact 90% of Hurst's patients were cured in one session. BRITISH PATHÉ'S STORY Before television, people came to movie theatres to watch the news. After World War I (1/2) | DW Documentary (WW1 documentary)

42:26
After World War I, chaos, conflicts and poverty ensued. Many survivors had lost everything. Our documentary follows the post-war years of fragile peace. [Part 2 online on 18 Nov 2018] "Apocalypse: Never-Ending War" tells the story of the years that followed the First World War, the collapse of empires, and the fateful rise of totalitarianism. Years that foretell the coming of another disastrous war. For four years, from 1914-1918, the world seemed hellbent on total self-annihilation. The First World War was an apocalyptic war that claimed over 50 million lives, civilian and military. Those who survive come to realize the world of the past century has now disappeared into an abyss of suffering. Millions of soldiers, the shell-shocked, the amputees, the disabled, will spend the rest of their lives trying to make sense of their years in hell. Parents are in despair at the loss of their children, families destroyed, millions of widows and orphans left to survive any way they can. In 1919 at Versailles and Saint-Germain-en-Laye, and in 1920 at Trianon, the victors forge peace treaties that they claim will restore balance. But those who have pinned their hopes on a transition from war to universal peace are to be deeply disappointed. Hatred, fear, and resentment re-emerge from the depths of societies traumatized by war and the tumultuous transformation that results from the world’s map being re-drawn. The vanquished, facing terrible reparations, look for promises of hope, stability and order, even at the cost of personal freedom. The climate is ripe for the emergence of authoritarian forces, exacerbating ethnic nationalism, and opening doors to the worst of human nature. Extreme ideologies take root in Germany and Italy, and spread from there. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. The facial prosthetics of World War I

04:03
Why World War I's wounded needed a sculptor. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO World War I’s horrors not only resulted in death, but severe disfigurement. When plastic surgeons were unable to heal the wounded, a unique solution came in play: sculpting. Facial prostheses in World War I were a new solution to a difficult problem, and sculptor and writer Anna Coleman Ladd led these efforts for the American Red Cross in France. She made more than 150 masks for the wounded in an effort to provide some semblance of normalcy after their severe injuries. These masks were made by making casts of the wounded faces, and then sculpting restored faces from that. Those sculptures were then used as a cast for thin copper-plated attachments, which were then attached to the wounded soldier’s face and painted. Though the process wasn’t restorative, it did provide some comfort to the wounded. That experience shaped Anna Coleman Ladd’s art as well. When she returned to America, she was willing to depict the horrors of war in her War Memorial, as well as the possibility for a new and better day ahead. Christmas Truce of 1914, World War I - Christmas is for Sharing

03:41
Peace at the war front on Christmas day during World War I. A century ago. A real story. An inspiration. Christmas is for sharing. By Sainsbury's. Presenting the new Sainsbury’s Christmas advert. Made in partnership with The Royal British Legion. Inspired by real events from 100 years ago. This year’s Christmas ad from Sainsbury’s – Christmas is for sharing. Made in partnership with The Royal British Legion, it commemorates the extraordinary events of Christmas Day, 1914, when the guns fell silent and two armies met in no-man’s land, sharing gifts – and even playing football together. The chocolate bar featured in the ad is on sale now at Sainsbury’s. All profits will go to The Royal British Legion and will benefit the armed forces and their families, past and present. To watch a short film of the story behind the Christmas ad: http://youtu.be/2s1YvnfcFVs To watch the making of our Christmas ad: http://youtu.be/Jx3pQWbysmM To find out more about the ad: www.inspiration.sainsburys-live-well-for-less.co.uk/about-our-christmas-tv-ad/ Game of Truce commemorates WW1 football match 18 December 2014 On Wednesday night the spirit of the First World War Christmas truce lived on as the British and German armies played a 100th anniversary football match to mark the Christmas Truce of 1914. The match saw the British Army edging out their German counterparts, the Bundeswehr, by a single goal. All proceeds from the match will be donated to the Legion and the German Military's equivalent charity. The match was jointly organised by the Football Association as part of its Football Remembers campaign, and Army HQ with sponsorship support from Team Army and Aldershot Town. It honoured the spirit of the 1914 Christmas Truce using the international language of football as a fitting commemoration to the men on both sides who spent Christmas 1914 in the trenches but came together along the Western Front to joke, share whisky and schnapps and kick a ball about in no-man's land. It has come to represent a fleeting moment of humanity in a four-year conflict that killed more than 16 million troops and civilians. Game of Truce teams The game began with a rendition of 'Silent Night' as well as the national anthems of both countries and a minute's silence. Over 2,500 people turned out, including football legend Sir Bobby Charlton, FA Chairman Greg Dyke and Head of Army, General Sir Nicholas Carter. Head of the Army General Sir Nick Carter was also at the game, where both sides were led out by flag bearers and mascots wearing military uniforms from 1914. "I think it shows the enduring ability of sport, and soccer in particular, to bring together factions and tribes and different people who are competing against each other, in a way that has comradeship right at the heart of the game." British Army Team Captain Keith Emmerson said: "We are always proud to put on the Army shirt, no matter how many games you play, but especially tonight. We are all here for the rest of the Armed Forces, not just us as an army football team, but we're representing all of the Armed Forces." The captains of the teams, British Army Sergeant Keith Emmerson (right) and German Armed Forces Master Sergeant Alexander Hess (left) shake hands prior to kick-off The match wasn't about the final score but for the record, the British Army won 1-0. The Legion is a firm supporter of sport within the military and is delighted to be a beneficiary charity from the Christmas Truce football match. The match is assisting the Legion to engage with a new generation of supporters and carry the Legion's message of comradeship to a broader community. Through commemorative events such as the Christmas Truce match, we are passing on the torch of Remembrance onto a younger generation ensuring there will always be a living legacy to those who sacrificed their today for our tomorrows. World War I: The American Legacy

World War I -- American Legacy vividly tells the many forgotten stories of the men and women who served in the Great War, reminding Americans of their impact on our country that can still be felt today. Subscribe for more! http://bit.ly/JansonYouTube Narrated by David Carradine From the summer of 1914 to November 1918, the Great War cost over 14 million lives, devastated entire countries and destroyed countless architectural landmarks. The war also led to important developments in literature, technology, music and social equality that have shaped the culture of 21st century America. Monuments and dedications to World War I veterans surround Americans today as a tribute to their service and sacrifice. Charles Whittlesey of the Lost Battalion and Father Duffy of the Fighting 69th became famous for surviving against impossible odds. Pilots Victor Chapman and Quentin Roosevelt and ambulance drivers like Richard Hall made the supreme sacrifice.

Hand Weapons of World War One: Knife, Club, & Spade

30:01
http://www.patreon.com/InRangeTV If you are interested in this subject, you should definitely go check out The Great War: https://youtu.be/HfKUd8bvQfc Today we are discussing some of the hand-to-hand melee arms of the First World War - specifically trench knives, trench clubs, and field spades. The up-close confined nature of trench warfare in WWI was not anticipated by its planners, and the infantry rifle/bayonet combination which had been developed for use on the open field was of little use in the trenches. In response, troops adapted a wide variety of improvised weapons that were more suitable. Some became issued formal items, and some remained ersatz and handmade throughout the war. Perhaps the most effective was the field spade, which was often sharpened around its while perimeter and could be used as a very utilitarian hand weapon in a variety of situations.

MAN F6V35 World War 1 U-boat diesel engine load run

05:41
A World War 1 U-boat diesel engine, built in 1917, running under load for the first time in years, after being moved to the new location of the SHVP. This U-boat engine was built in 1917 by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg to operate in a German submarine. This engine however never made it into a U-boat as the war was running to an end. The engine was stored and transferred to Holland during the second World War to operate as a generator engine in a water supply company where it was producing electric power up to the 1960's. It's a four stroke engine with six cylinders and a overhead camshaft, the exhaust valves are water cooled. Attached to the engine is a four step, high pressure air compressor which provides about 80 bar necessary for the diesel injection, as common fuel pumps where not developed yet. To start the engine a pressure of 80 bar is needed for the fuel injection system and a large volume of air at 20 bar to set the six cylinders in motion. Once started the engine's own compressor takes over the high pressure fuel injection. The engine drives an AC generator of 480 kVA built in 1944 by Smit Slikkerveer in The Netherlands. More information about this and other engines can be found on the website of the SHVP: www.shvp.nl

Epic History: World War One - 1914

Everything you need to know about the first year of World War One in a 12 minute video. This episode covers the rival alliances that dominated Europe in the build-up to war, the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente, and the fatal gunshots by Gavrilo Princip at Sarajevo that resulted in the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Imperial rivalries, the system of alliances and deep-seated animosities helped propel Europe into a general war. However Woodrow Wilson, the US President, ensured America stood apart from Europe's conflict. In August 1914, Germany invaded France and Belgium as part of the Schlieffen Plan. The tiny British Expeditionary Force could only hold up the German army for a few hours at the Battle of Mons, but later joined the French in saving Paris at the Battle of the Marne. The 'Race to the Sea' followed, leading to the First Battle of Ypres, as both sides tried to outflank each other to the north. Their failure led to a stalemate, in which the devastating power of machineguns and artillery forced infantry of both sides to take cover in deep trenches. At sea, Britain's Royal Navy won the war's first naval battle at Heligoland Bight, and imposed a naval blockade on Germany, preventing war supplies (including, controversially, food) from reaching the country by sea. HMS Pathfinder was soon sunk by a German U-boat, revealing the potential of Germany's submarines to overturn Britain's long-held naval dominance. On the Eastern Front, a Russian invasion of East Prussia ended in disaster at the Battle of Tannenberg, masterminded by German generals Paul von Hindenburg and Erich Ludendorff. A second victory at the Battle of Masurian Lakes sent the Russian army into retreat. Austria-Hungary's invasion of Serbia began badly, with defeat at the Battle of Cer. Things went even worse on the Russian front, as Austria's offensive against the Russians leads to heavy losses, and forced Germany to come to the rescue, by launching the Battle of Łódź. In Africa, British, French and German colonial forces clashed in British East Africa (Kenya), Togoland (Togo), German South-West Africa (Namibia), and German Kamerun (Cameroon). German Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbek had notable success repelling the British at the Battle of Tanga. In the Pacific, Japan honoured its alliance with Britain and seized the German naval base at Tsingtao in China. Task forces from Australia and New Zealand secured the German colonies of Samoa and New Guinea. German Admiral von Spee's East Asia Squadron won victory at the Battle of Coronel, off Chile, before sailing into catastrophe at the Battle of the Falkland Islands. In the Middle East, British troops occupied Basra, securing access to Persian oil for their fleet. Winter 1914 saw the French launch their first major offensive to break the trench stalemate of the Western Front. But the First Battle of Champagne led to heavy losses for no real gains. Ottoman operations in the Caucasus Mountains also ended in disaster at the Battle of Sarikamish. The war's first Christmas was marked by games of football in No Man's Land on the Western Front, but early hopes of a short war had now been entirely quashed. CORRECTION: 7.55 - the map shows Cyprus as part of the Ottoman Empire. Cyprus was part of the Ottoman Empire from 1570 to 1914, but when the Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers in November 1914, Cyprus was annexed by Britain. But there is something about the merging of the old world and new world that has produced numerous images which are incredibly haunting and disturbing. While researching for this video I came across a huge variety of pictures, however these are 5 that I personally found particularly disturbing, creepy, or touching. 5. The Wall Of Masks 4. When he was 20 years old, he was called to join the Japanese army. He promptly quit his job and headed off to training in Japan. At a certain point in his training, he was chosen to be trained at Nakano School as an Imperial Army Intelligence Officer. In this specialized military intelligence training, he was specifically taught methods of gathering intelligence and how to conduct guerrilla warfare. He was being groomed to go in behind enemy lines and be left with small pockets of soldiers to make life miserable for Japan’s enemies and gather intelligence in the process. The strategy of British and French Generals was that if they killed each other on a one to one basis, the Allies would win the war because they had more soldiers to sacrifice. There is a scene in the movie All Quiet on the Western Front where the Germans storm an Allied trench, take the trench, then are ordered back to the base because the Generals had no intention of keeping the trench. Simply an exercise to keep the boys busy. Extra rations for those who survived.

War Game (2002) by Dave Unwin - Exclusive Full Animated Film

28:32
Based on the picture book by Michael Foreman, WAR GAME tells the story of Will, Lacey and Freddie – three young Suffolk lads who leave their idyllic country lives to fight in the trenches of World War I. Surrounded by the chaos and confusion of war, they can only dream of their football team, their friends and the families they have left behind. On Christmas Day 1914 however, a football game is started between the Germans and the English. Scrambling onto No Man’s Land, the men come face to face with the enemy they have never seen and the true futility of their fight. For a brief moment - differences are forgotten, the men unite and the seeds of hope are planted. But joy has no place in war and the men are soon recalled to the trenches to continue the battle. From a football game in the fields of Suffolk to a football game in the heart of Flanders - WAR GAME follows the realisation of three young men’s ambitions to play for England and the ability of the human spirit to exist even in the harshest conditions. Featuring a powerful and moving sound track from the composer Julian Nott, and including Kate Winslet on the voice track. WAR GAME has 18 won awards worldwide including: The British Animation Awards; The Pulcinella Award, Italy; Best Television Special - Annecy International Animated Film Festival, France; BANFF International Television Festival, Canada; Tokyo Kinder Film Festival, Japan; Best Animation Prize, ANIMA, Argentina. Who Started World War I: Crash Course World History 210

10:56
In which John Green teaches you WHY World War I started. Or tries to anyway. With this kind of thing, it's kind of hard to assign blame to any one of the nations involved. Did the fault lie with Austria-Hungary? Germany? Russia? Julius Caesar? One thing we can say for sure is that you can't blame the United States of America for this one. Woohoo! Well, you can hardly blame the US. You can directly support Crash Course at https://www.patreon.com/crashcourse Subscribe for as little as $0 to keep up with everything we're doing. FLOL 5 World War II

04:13
World War II, or The Second World War (often abbreviated WWII or WW2), was a global war. Approximately 291,557 Soldiers were killed in combat. During World War II, 66 black pilots were killed in combat and another 84 men were killed in training accidents, either in the U.S. or overseas. In 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9981, establishing the President's Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Services. Long before Pearl Harbor, one black man, Yancy Williams, pressured the U.S. military to open a pilot's training school for blacks, the Army Flying School in Alabama. Despite the efforts to integrate black Soldiers into the armed forces, segregation and discrimination were still very much a part of World War II. Black men and women who served in World War II were better educated than their predecessors in World War I, less accepting of "color lines", and more determined to serve as equals to whites, including in every form of combat. The first American hero of World War II was a black man, Dorie Miller. He was a mess cook aboard the USS Arizona. He carried the ship's mortally wounded Captain to safety and then manned an anti-aircraft gun to bring down two Japanese planes. In January 1941, the Army announced the formation of the first black Air Corps Unit, 99th Pursuit Squadron, the Lonely Eagles. The million-dollar Tuskegee Army Airfield in Alabama became the center of black World War II military aviation. Black women broke the color barriers for the first time, joining women's branches of the armed forces: 4,000 in the Women's Army Corps (WACs) in the Army and 60 Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) in the Navy. A 1925 Army War College study of "Negroes in Combat" reported that blacks would never be fit to serve as military pilots because of their supposed lack of intelligence, ambition and courage in combat. The famed "Tuskegee Airmen" later disproved these questionable conclusions during combat in Europe. Between 1943 and 1945, the group earned 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 14 Bronze Stars, 8 Purple Hearts, 3 Distinctive Unit Citations as well as several other awards. In July 1941, the Army opened its integrated Officers candidate schools. For the first six months, however, only 21 of the more than 2,000 men admitted were black. Unfortunately, race continued to determine assignments once newly Commissioned Officers graduated. Too often, more qualified black Officers were put in charge of service units, while less qualified white Officers continued to be assigned to black combat units. The degree of authority and respect given to black Officers also remained a serious problem, since black Officers were unable to command even the lowest ranking white Soldiers. In 1942, the Army opened an Officer training school for women at Fort Des Moines. The camp on the south side of Fort Des Moines had once been the home of the first facility to train black male Officers in World War I. The women who trained at Fort Des Moines in 1942 were part of the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC, later shortened to WAC). At first, only white women were accepted as candidates for WAC Officer training. However, due to political pressure, the camp was opened to black women as well. The Army reserved 40 of the first 440 candidate positions for black women.

The Long Shadow: Europe After World War One (WW1 Documentary) | Timeline

49:16
Check out our new website for more incredible history documentaries: HD and ad-free. http://bit.ly/2O6zUsK Marking the centenary of World War One, historian David Reynolds explores the enduring shadow the conflict has cast over Britain and Europe in the century that followed. Travelling to locations across Europe, from Slovenia to the Sudetenland, Belfast to Berlin, David Reynolds traces the war’s legacy, arguing that it unleashed forces we still grapple with today. This remarkable series also looks again at how the experience of war haunted the generation who lived through it, in particular the soldiers who survived it – dynamic characters such as Benito Mussolini, Eamon de Valera, Philippe Petain, James Ramsey MacDonald and Thomas Masaryk. Reynolds examines how these men shaped the peace that followed war, often in unpredictable ways. Content licensed from Digital Rights Group (DRG). Brookdale College World War II Lecture Series: The Monuments Men

01:14:59
As Hitler was attempting to conquer the western world, his armies were methodically pillaging the finest art in Europe. The Monuments Men had expertise as museum directors, curators, art scholars and educators, artists, architects and archivists. Their job description was simple: to save as much of the culture of Europe as they could during World War II. The group of men and women from 13 nations not only had the vision to understand the grave threat to the greatest cultural and artistic achievements of civilization but joined the front lines to do something about it. The Monuments Men had a mandate from President Roosevelt and the support of General Eisenhower but no vehicles, gasoline, typewriters, or authority was authorized. It was a race against time to save the world's greatest cultural treasures from destruction at the hands of Nazi fanatics. Historian and Professor Emeritus of History, Jack Needle.will share the story of these unlikely heroes, many who were volunteers, whose courageous spirit and actions actually enabled the best of humanity to defeat the worst.
