Automotive Engineering | Careers and Where to Begin

09:00
Automotive engineering is about the design, manufacturing, and operation of cars, motorcycles, trucks, and other automobiles. Within automotive engineering there are a variety of sub disciplines including safety, performance, vehicle dynamics, fuel economy, cost, manufacturing, and more. For those who want to go into automotive engineering, note that most colleges don't offer it as a major in terms of undergrad. The most common major for people to begin with is actually mechanical engineering. Then after you get your bachelor's you either go into the workforce in the automotive industry, or pursue further education specifically in automotive engineering. While in school you will want to get as much exposure to the field by joining clubs like the society of automotive engineers so you can participate in various competitions. This will give you something to put on your resume and get you that hands on experience that is so valuable for your career. One big area of research at the moment is self driving cars. This is where you'll see much more than just mechanical engineering working on these vehicles. People from all disciplines including electrical engineers, computer engineers, materials engineers, computer scientists, and more are needed for these projects. However, there are more areas of research that are briefly mentioned in the video beyond self driving cars. *************************************************** Forbes Article: https://www.forbes.com/sites/quora/2017/06/27/what-will-mechanical-engineers-do-after-most-cars-go-electric/#459db26e6387 *************************************************** ► For more information on math, science, and engineering majors, check us out at https://majorprep.com *************************************************** ► Patreon: https://patreon.com/majorprep ► PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/majorprep ► Facebook: https://facebook.com/majorprep

Map of Computer Science

10:58
The field of computer science summarised. Learn more at this video's sponsor https://brilliant.org/dos Computer science is the subject that studies what computers can do and investigates the best ways you can solve the problems of the world with them. It is a huge field overlapping pure mathematics, engineering and many other scientific disciplines. In this video I summarise as much of the subject as I can and show how the areas are related to each other. You can buy this poster here: North America: https://store.dftba.com/products/map-of-computer-science-poster Everywhere else: https://www.redbubble.com/people/dominicwalliman/works/27929629-map-of-computer-science?p=poster&finish=semi_gloss&size=small Get all my other posters here: https://www.redbubble.com/people/dominicwalliman A couple of notes on this video: 1. Some people have commented that I should have included computer security alongside hacking, and I completely agree, that was an oversight on my part. Apologies to all the computer security professionals, and thanks for all the hard work! 2. I also failed to mention interpreters alongside compilers in the complier section. Again, I’m kicking myself because of course this is an important concept for people to hear about. Also the layers of languages being compiled to other languages is overly convoluted, in practice it is more simple than this. I guess I should have picked one simple example. 3. NP-complete problems are possible to solve, they just become very difficult to solve very quickly as they get bigger. When I said NP-complete and then "impossible to solve", I meant that the large NP-complete problems that industry is interested in solving were thought to be practically impossible to solve. And free downloadable versions of this and the other posters here. Building the Classic 1976 COSMAC "ELF" Microcomputer

46:20
********UPDATE August 2017: I used the spare parts from this ELF build to make a another, duplicate, ELF computer, differing only in that the second one does not have the audio output jack, and uses only the single clock oscillator (does not have the alternate slow speed oscillator) for the 1802. This second computer was donated to the National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park, England, and went on display in their vintage personal computer gallery at the end of July, 2017. ********UPDATE March 2017: I have now published a complete set of plans for the ELF, downloadable from: www.serpentwebsite.com/COSMAC_ELF_build_details.zip and this includes a full user's manual, list of 1802 instructions, schematic, parts list, assembly diagram, etc; plus the Front Panel Express design file for the toggle switch panel. The same set of ELF plans, and my ELF User's Manual, can also be downloaded from COSMACELF.COM ******** In early 1975, Popular Electronics magazine featured a cover article on the MITS "Altair 8800", an Intel 8080 based microcomputer that has become known as the first mass produced personal computer; it was very limited in its basic form, but expandable. And while expensive it was still much less costly than any other computer option at that time. In August 1976, Popular Electronics had another cover article on an entry level personal computer, the COSMAC "ELF", based on the RCA 1802 microprocessor. RCA employee Joe Weisbecker helped to invent that processor, and he used his familiarity with the device to develop the ultra simple, very low cost, ELF microcomputer. It could be made by the magazine reader for roughly 10% the cost of an Altair 8800, and while not very useful by itself, it could potentially be expanded until it became useful. The ELF had very limited I/O and interface for the user, but by evolution it could be made to support a better display and keyboard, have more memory, interface with a video display, save and load programs using a cassette tape, and run operating systems/languages such as BASIC. I had obtained an Altair, and had been interested in making the "cute" ELF, but never did. Now I have checked that item off my bucket list by building an authentic ELF from the information provided in the original magazine article. This video is a slide show of all the steps of making my ELF, and I have a brief video segment at the end that shows how the ELF's controls work, and I enter and demonstrate a simple program.

I bought this at a car boot sale for £5. I had no idea what it was initially, and it was only after I'd filmed the video that I not only found a magazine article on Google from the earl 80's about it, but I also found the exact same machine - with serial number 147 - had gone unsold on eBay several months ago! ATX Bench Power Supply - Convert a Computer Power Supply

40:52
A computer ATX power supply can be easily converted into a versatile and powerful power supply for your workbench. In this video, I’ll show you how easy it is to make that conversion. Full Article at https://dbot.ws/atxpwr More Tutorials and Projects at https://dronebotworkshop.com Keep informed! Subscribe to the newsletter https://dbot.ws/dbnews A power supply is an essential piece of equipment for any electronics experimenter. While you can get by with USB adapters and “wall warts” having a capable high-current source of 3.3, 5 and 12 volt DC power will take your experimenting to another level. Commercial power supplies with these sorts of current capabilities can be very expensive, however, there is a much cheaper alternative. With some simple wiring, you can convert an ATX power supply form a desktop computer into a reliable and capable workbench power supply. Even if you need to purchase a new ATX power supply this method is still a lot cheaper than buying a commercial workbench power supply. And chances are that you won't need to spend any money at all on the ATX power supply, I salvaged mine from an old Windows XP computer and it works just great. There are two types of ATX power supplies commonly in use, I will show you the differences between them. Either model can be used in this project. Here is the Table of Contents for the video: Parts used in Project - 4:36 ATX Supply pinouts - 10:06 ATX Supply Inside - 13:46 Testing ATX Supply - 16:17 Hookup Diagram - 19:14 Building the Power Supply - 22:48 Testing the Power Supply - 30:17 Adding a Power Meter - 31:59 One note - there are many ways to do this and I outline a few of them in the video. Several methods (including the one I used) involve opening up the ATX power supply. If you do that BE VERY CAREFUL as some of the components in the supply can retain a high-voltage charge for hours or even days after the supply has been unplugged. If you are unsure about opening up a power supply (or if you have a new one still under warranty) don’t do it, you can still build this project another way. I go over that at the conclusion of the video. As always there is an article on the DroneBot Workshop website that accompanies this video, you can read it at https://dbot.ws/atxpwr. BTW, I needed this power supply as I’m going to use it during the development of a really big project that I’m just getting started on. If you want to learn more about this project and perhaps have some input on its design please subscribe to my newsletter, as I’m sharing the details with my newsletter subscribers. You can sign up at https://dbot.ws/dbnews Hope you find this video useful and if you haven’t already please subscribe to the YouTube channel. Thanks!

50th Anniversary of Moore’s Law. Will Moore’s Law continue to work further?

04:22
This April 19th marks the 50th Anniversary of Moore’s Law. Three years before co-founding Intel, Gordon Moore made a simple observation that has revolutionized the computing industry. It states, the number of transistors incorporated on a computer chip will double every two years, resulting in increased computing power and devices that are faster, smaller and lower cost. Gordon Moore didn’t set out to make a law. He was just writing a magazine article. In 1965, the semiconductor engineer was asked by Electronics magazine to submit an article for its 35th anniversary that would make predictions about the next 10 years In his Article Moore predicted that engineers would keep shrinking transistors, resistors and other components, doubling the number they could fit on a square of silicon every year or so. The computing industry has benefitted directly from the chip industry’s steady march: Every new chip is smaller than the one that came before it, and at least as powerful but less expensive to make. In 2015 transistor counts on Intel chips number in the billions; in his paper, Moore predicted 65,000 by 1975. But, Once the transistor size reaches the size of atom, it is not possible to reduce the size of transistor further. So, we can that the Moore's law is almost nearing its end. If fuel efficiency improved at the same rate as Moore's law, you could easily drive a car for your entire life on a single tank of gas. And, if cars shrunk at the rate of transistor, today they'd be the size of an ant. if house prices fell at the same rate as transistors, you could purchase a home for the price of a piece of candy. Moore’s Law is an aspiration, not a law of nature. It’s made possible by an army of people, pushing the fundamental laws of physics. Today, Intel factories produce over 10 billion transistors every second Credits: Intel Subscribe to our YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=qualitypointtech

Articles (a, an, the) - Lesson 1 - 7 Rules For Using Articles Correctly - English Grammar

16:59
In this lesson, learn the 7 rules for using articles in English correctly. Also see - MOST COMMON MISTAKES IN ENGLISH & HOW TO AVOID THEM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Dax90QyXgI&list=PLmwr9polMHwsR35rD9spEhjFUFa7QblF9 For more FREE English lessons, SUBSCRIBE to this channel. Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I will teach you the seven rules that you need to know for using articles in English correctly. Articles are the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’. There is a final quiz at the end of the lesson for you to test your understanding. OK, the first rule is about where to use ‘a’ and where to use ‘an’. So rule number one is use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. So in all of these words – you see that they start with a consonant sound. Cat starts with /k/, dog starts with /d/, boy with /b/, girl with /g/, house with /h/ and tree with /t/. So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a tree’ etc. Notice that in natural speech, we don’t say ‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a cat’. In this next set of words, you see that, they all start with a vowel sound – apple starts with /ae/, engineer starts with /e/, ice-cream with /ai/, old with /o/, umbrella with /uh/. So we say ‘an apple’, ‘an engineer’, ‘an ice-cream cone’, ‘an old womman’, ‘an umbrella’ and so on. In speech, we don’t say ‘an’, we say /ən/. Let’s do a small exercise. You see ten items on the screen. For each one, I want you to say if you would use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before it. Stop the video, think about it, then play the video again and check. OK here are the answers. Did you get them all right? I want to focus on items number seven to ten because these are a little tricky. Number seven is ‘a university’ because even though ‘university’ starts with the letter ‘u’ the first sound of the word is not a vowel sound. We don’t say /ooniversity/. We say /yoo-nə- vər-si-ty/ so that first sound is a /y/ sound, which a consonant sound, so we say ‘a university.’ Number eight is similar. The word ‘European’ starts with a /y/ sound, so ‘a European tour.’ In number nine, the spelling has an ‘h’ at the start but that ‘h’ is silent. We don’t say /hau-ər/, we say /au-ər/. The first sound is an /au/ sound which is a vowel sound, so this is ‘an hour’. In the same way, in number ten, we say MA. ‘M’ starts with an /e/ sound which is again a vowel sound, so ‘an MA in English’. OK let’s move on to rule number two: Use ‘a’ and ‘an’ ONLY with singular, countable nouns. We say that a noun is countable if we can count it – one, two, three, four etc. All of these words on the screen are countable. We can say one elephant, three cars, ten teachers, five hundred onions and so on. Now if you talk about one person or thing, like one elephant or one car, then that’s called a singular noun and if you say ten teachers or five hundred onions, those are called plural nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in this way. Nouns like water, sugar, milk, love, anger, knowledge are some examples. If you think about it, you cannot say “I drank four waters” or “I want eight milks”. To a person, you can say “I love you” but you can’t say “I have five loves for you” – that doesn’t make any sense. So these are all uncountable. Alright, so the rule is - you can only use ‘a’ and ‘an’ if you’re talking about one person or one thing. Let’s do another quick exercise. Here are ten items again. This time, you see ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the nouns, but some of these are wrong. They should NOT have ‘a’ or ‘an’ before them. Stop the video, identify the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers. Number three is wrong because ‘shirts’ is a plural and you cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a plural noun. Number five is wrong because ‘happiness’ is uncountable, so again, ‘a’ or ‘an’ cannot be used there. The same goes for number six – water is uncountable. Number nine is wrong because ‘doctors’ is a plural – you can say ‘a doctor’ but not ‘a doctors’. And finally, in number ten, advice is an uncountable noun – so you cannot ask for ‘an advice’. Now a quick note here: the article ‘the’ can be used with all kinds of nouns – singular or plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. OK, so let’s now talk about how to choose between ‘a’ or ‘an’ and ‘the’. Here’s rule number three: Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ to talk about a person or thing unknown to your listener. And use ‘the’ to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, “My sister has two computers: a PC and a laptop. The PC is quite old but the laptop is brand new.” I say ‘a PC’ and ‘a laptop’ because that’s the first time I’m mentioning the two computers. That is, until this point, they are unknown to you, the listener.

VEX BottleBot 3

03:49
The original two BottleBots were constructed in the summer of 2005 for a feature in a magazine article on VEX. The challenge then was simple: "design a robot which can grab a beverage off a table, open it, and pour it into a cup." The BottleBots would become two of the most popular robots to come out of the VEX Lab. Three years later, the challenge remained the same. This time it was Robot Magazine who asked the IFI engineers to improve upon their previous creation and come up with a better BottleBot. The new IFI intern Tyler Holtzman would use the lessons learned from the original build to design and construct the BottleBot3. This robot included several of the best features from each of the previous BottleBots while incorporating several ways to improve its function. It would be featured in the November/December 2008 issue of Robot Magazine. For more information, go to: http://www.vexrobotics.com/vex-bottlebot3.shtml

Vintage Computer Mark 8 Microcomputer by Roy Justus

05:28
Vintage Computer Mark 8 Microcomputer Copy by Roy Justis My Blog/Virtual Museum http://www.microcomputermuseum.com I first learned to program a computer by taking a class at Virginia Tech which taught Fortran IV on the IBM370 main frame using punch cards for data entry. The year was 1978 and it was an enjoyable class. We worked at our own pace and graded on our mastery of the subject as measured by how many programs we completed and how well we solved the problem in logic given. Then came video terminals in place of the punch cards for a chemistry class. Very cool stuff. I spent many late hours at those old HP terminals running simulations of NMR spectra and chemical composition problems. Subscribe to my Channel David Larsen LCF Group http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=lcfgroup I left Tech in 1980 and took a job as a lab technician and operator at a local waste water treatment plant. I wasn't seriously going to take the job at first but I went to check it out anyway. When I got there I talked to the superintendent and looked around. I walked into a room filled with analog controllers, strip chart recorders and alarm systems and I changed my mind about taking the job. It was a fine opportunity to learn more about process control and analog electronics. I went back to tech in 1984 and took some digital electronics classes taught under Mr David Larsen and Dr. Paul Field. Just about that time the plant I worked at began to be upgraded with digital electronic controllers and we received our first IBM PC. Actually it was a Radio Shack model 1200 which was an accurate clone. I spent the next year writing the software we used for processing the data we collected throughout the plant. We used this software for about 14 years until we upgraded to a windows system and had to purchase a professionally written program to replace my homebrew software. The classes in digital electronics and computer programming at Virginia Tech prepared me for the transition from analog to digital electronics and for the use of computers in the lab. I first heard of the Mark8 when I saw an Ebay auction for a kit to build the machine in the vintage computer hardware category. I started reading about it and to my astonishment learned it was built by a guy from Virginia Tech. I myself attended Virginia Tech in the 70's and 80's and hadn't heard about the Mark8 until this time (2006). I also read that most original Mark8 kits sold did not result in operational machines because of its complexity so I decided to try my luck with it. I purchased two of the kits which contained the PC boards and a few critical components and set to work on the machine. After a couple of weeks stuffing the boards and constructing the framework they resided in, I completed the enclosure, wired up the switch banks to the PC boards and completed all the miscellaneous connections necessary for operation. When I applied power nothing happened. After some investigation with a logic probe I found a dead chip and replaced it. I also had to replace three flip-flop circuits and powered up again. IT WORKED!! Couldn't believe my luck. The next task was to run the test program provided in the original magazine article. I input the program and set the switches and the machine began to execute the test program. Everything worked and the output register began to count in binary from 0 to 255 then cycle back to zero and start again in an endless loop. The machine was alive and I had a fully functional Mark8 on my hands! Building the keyboard was the next step. I nabbed a couple of ASCII keyboards off Ebay but couldn't get them to work since they didn't have any documentation with them. I finally found a basic matrix keyboard complete with schematics and used that in conjunction with a microcontroller to produce a fully functional ASCII keyboard. I also programmed the microcontroller, an Atmel ATmega16, with some custom Mark8 software that it could transmit to the machine after a 17 byte boot-loader program was manually entered into the Mark8. That is how I came to know the Mark8. The machine that started the PC revolution we live today....
