Map of Computer Science

10:58
The field of computer science summarised. Learn more at this video's sponsor https://brilliant.org/dos Computer science is the subject that studies what computers can do and investigates the best ways you can solve the problems of the world with them. It is a huge field overlapping pure mathematics, engineering and many other scientific disciplines. In this video I summarise as much of the subject as I can and show how the areas are related to each other. You can buy this poster here: North America: https://store.dftba.com/products/map-of-computer-science-poster Everywhere else: https://www.redbubble.com/people/dominicwalliman/works/27929629-map-of-computer-science?p=poster&finish=semi_gloss&size=small Get all my other posters here: https://www.redbubble.com/people/dominicwalliman A couple of notes on this video: 1. Some people have commented that I should have included computer security alongside hacking, and I completely agree, that was an oversight on my part. Apologies to all the computer security professionals, and thanks for all the hard work! 2. I also failed to mention interpreters alongside compilers in the complier section. Again, I’m kicking myself because of course this is an important concept for people to hear about. Also the layers of languages being compiled to other languages is overly convoluted, in practice it is more simple than this. I guess I should have picked one simple example. 3. NP-complete problems are possible to solve, they just become very difficult to solve very quickly as they get bigger. When I said NP-complete and then "impossible to solve", I meant that the large NP-complete problems that industry is interested in solving were thought to be practically impossible to solve. And free downloadable versions of this and the other posters here. Articles (a, an, the) - Lesson 1 - 7 Rules For Using Articles Correctly - English Grammar

16:59
In this lesson, learn the 7 rules for using articles in English correctly. Also see - MOST COMMON MISTAKES IN ENGLISH & HOW TO AVOID THEM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Dax90QyXgI&list=PLmwr9polMHwsR35rD9spEhjFUFa7QblF9 For more FREE English lessons, SUBSCRIBE to this channel. Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I will teach you the seven rules that you need to know for using articles in English correctly. Articles are the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’. There is a final quiz at the end of the lesson for you to test your understanding. OK, the first rule is about where to use ‘a’ and where to use ‘an’. So rule number one is use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. So in all of these words – you see that they start with a consonant sound. Cat starts with /k/, dog starts with /d/, boy with /b/, girl with /g/, house with /h/ and tree with /t/. So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a tree’ etc. Notice that in natural speech, we don’t say ‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a cat’. In this next set of words, you see that, they all start with a vowel sound – apple starts with /ae/, engineer starts with /e/, ice-cream with /ai/, old with /o/, umbrella with /uh/. So we say ‘an apple’, ‘an engineer’, ‘an ice-cream cone’, ‘an old womman’, ‘an umbrella’ and so on. In speech, we don’t say ‘an’, we say /ən/. Let’s do a small exercise. You see ten items on the screen. For each one, I want you to say if you would use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before it. Stop the video, think about it, then play the video again and check. OK here are the answers. Did you get them all right? I want to focus on items number seven to ten because these are a little tricky. Number seven is ‘a university’ because even though ‘university’ starts with the letter ‘u’ the first sound of the word is not a vowel sound. We don’t say /ooniversity/. We say /yoo-nə- vər-si-ty/ so that first sound is a /y/ sound, which a consonant sound, so we say ‘a university.’ Number eight is similar. The word ‘European’ starts with a /y/ sound, so ‘a European tour.’ In number nine, the spelling has an ‘h’ at the start but that ‘h’ is silent. We don’t say /hau-ər/, we say /au-ər/. The first sound is an /au/ sound which is a vowel sound, so this is ‘an hour’. In the same way, in number ten, we say MA. ‘M’ starts with an /e/ sound which is again a vowel sound, so ‘an MA in English’. OK let’s move on to rule number two: Use ‘a’ and ‘an’ ONLY with singular, countable nouns. We say that a noun is countable if we can count it – one, two, three, four etc. All of these words on the screen are countable. We can say one elephant, three cars, ten teachers, five hundred onions and so on. Now if you talk about one person or thing, like one elephant or one car, then that’s called a singular noun and if you say ten teachers or five hundred onions, those are called plural nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in this way. Nouns like water, sugar, milk, love, anger, knowledge are some examples. If you think about it, you cannot say “I drank four waters” or “I want eight milks”. To a person, you can say “I love you” but you can’t say “I have five loves for you” – that doesn’t make any sense. So these are all uncountable. Alright, so the rule is - you can only use ‘a’ and ‘an’ if you’re talking about one person or one thing. Let’s do another quick exercise. Here are ten items again. This time, you see ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the nouns, but some of these are wrong. They should NOT have ‘a’ or ‘an’ before them. Stop the video, identify the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers. Number three is wrong because ‘shirts’ is a plural and you cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a plural noun. Number five is wrong because ‘happiness’ is uncountable, so again, ‘a’ or ‘an’ cannot be used there. The same goes for number six – water is uncountable. Number nine is wrong because ‘doctors’ is a plural – you can say ‘a doctor’ but not ‘a doctors’. And finally, in number ten, advice is an uncountable noun – so you cannot ask for ‘an advice’. Now a quick note here: the article ‘the’ can be used with all kinds of nouns – singular or plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. OK, so let’s now talk about how to choose between ‘a’ or ‘an’ and ‘the’. Here’s rule number three: Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ to talk about a person or thing unknown to your listener. And use ‘the’ to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, “My sister has two computers: a PC and a laptop. The PC is quite old but the laptop is brand new.” I say ‘a PC’ and ‘a laptop’ because that’s the first time I’m mentioning the two computers. That is, until this point, they are unknown to you, the listener.

The article lists this device at $1395 when it was released. From the looks of mine, it saw light use and then was put away for 20 years.

What does COMPUTER SIMULATION mean? COMPUTER SIMULATION meaning - COMPUTER SIMULATION definition - COMPUTER SIMULATION explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A computer simulation is a simulation, run on a single computer, or a network of computers, to reproduce behavior of a system. The simulation uses an abstract model (a computer model, or a computational model) to simulate the system. Computer simulations have become a useful part of mathematical modeling of many natural systems in physics (computational physics), astrophysics, climatology, chemistry and biology, human systems in economics, psychology, social science, and engineering. Simulation of a system is represented as the running of the system's model. It can be used to explore and gain new insights into new technology and to estimate the performance of systems too complex for analytical solutions. Computer simulations vary from computer programs that run a few minutes to network-based groups of computers running for hours to ongoing simulations that run for days. The scale of events being simulated by computer simulations has far exceeded anything possible (or perhaps even imaginable) using traditional paper-and-pencil mathematical modeling. Over 10 years ago, a desert-battle simulation of one force invading another involved the modeling of 66,239 tanks, trucks and other vehicles on simulated terrain around Kuwait, using multiple supercomputers in the DoD High Performance Computer Modernization Program Other examples include a 1-billion-atom model of material deformation; a 2.64-million-atom model of the complex maker of protein in all organisms, a ribosome, in 2005; a complete simulation of the life cycle of Mycoplasma genitalium in 2012; and the Blue Brain project at EPFL (Switzerland), begun in May 2005 to create the first computer simulation of the entire human brain, right down to the molecular level. Because of the computational cost of simulation, computer experiments are used to perform inference such as uncertainty quantification.

Robot Arms with RobotBASIC (Distance Learning Compatible)

09:35
Both 2D and 3D arms can be simulated with RobotBASIC. They can be programmed like real arms, allow hobbyists and students to experiement with a wide variety of programming algorithms without the expense and time needed to build a physical arm. Demo versions of these arms can be downloaded from www.RobotBASIC.com. The FULL source code versions will be released with a new book (or perhaps earlier with a magazine article) in 2009. magz

Grow Biological Living Computers! - Major Breakthrough!

13:34
NOT something totally new but it appears researchers at Stanford University have developed a unique type of transistor they call a "transcriptor". http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/31/stanford-genetic-transistor-transcriptor/ What periodical first reported it is unknown but other publications are credited at the end of the article. You need to read them all to understand much more than what this brief but excellent article in the magazine Engadget conveys. Causing living cells to change "state" with electrical stimulation is not new but doing so such that it is repeatable, stable and scaleable MAY be a monumental breakthrough in the science of computing and electronics in general. I have predicted for at least 20 years the next "great leap" would be to computers that mostly use light waves replacing wires and circuit paths. Easier said than done in, say, an integrated circuit containing a million circuit paths! Yet, research continues. A computer substituting light beams in place of silver or copper wires and paths would speed up a computer by an untold amount. Perhaps thousands of times faster! What may come after light wave computers? I've predicted organic or biological computers and electronic circuits in which LIVING CELLS become the building blocks of computers and other types of electronic equipment. Living biological computer elements would again speed up a computer by perhaps thousands of times over a light beam computer. What may come after that? Electronics is already being "married" into the human brain to accomplish things such as returning the ability of communicating with the world when a person's body has left them fully functioning mentally but unable to externalize their thoughts to others! What if if it was possible to add growing computer "parts" to any brain that could, say, add ALL of the knowledge currently known to mankind? I've predicted mankind would face this question many decades from now but it may now be coming much sooner! "Please don't shoot me - I'm just the messenger" is the often used refrain. There is much to ponder and think about here! Is mankind ready for this? Like all scientific breakthroughs they never wait for mankind to be "ready". Just like nuclear energy, it appeared much too soon (many say) but mankind had no alternative but to face it head on. Virtually unlimited "computing speed and power" and even the ability to add it to human brains MAY be in our "relatively NEAR" future! NOT 100 years from today but, perhaps, much sooner. Read, follow and be aware of what science is coming up with. I've been involved in advanced electronic research for virtually all of my adult years holding patents on various designs that have affected many. If you've ever received a speeding ticket you can blame me - sorry! I was one of three engineers who developed "instant lock-on RADAR intending it to be for weather RADAR of all types. BUT companies who manufacture police speed RADAR equipment quickly bought manufacturing licenses from my employer. BEYOND state-of-the-art new technology has always fascinated me. I enjoy pondering what the world will be like 50 and 500 years from now. Science and technology will continue to play a major part in what our world will be like in the future. What do you think mankind will have to deal with? Either good or bad, "advancements" in science cannot be stopped or even slowed down. Mankind has no choice but to attempt to put every "advancement" to a POSITIVE use aiding the lives of every personon our planet. Those who are Luddites (look it up) are still great in number even if many don't accept their beliefs are the thoughts of the Luddite movement that threatened the industrial revolution in the 19th century. Should advancements in science and technology be slowed down or even stopped in some cases? How close to "God-like" should mankind become? Questions that bring into focus the actual meaning of life (IMO). (Well thought out intelligent) comments encouraged! Please!

Toni Castells - 2045 - 01 Overture [ALBUM]

03:20
Video created by Joe Chen. '2045' was inspired by an article published on Time Magazine in 2011 by Lev Grossman entitled '2045: The Year Man Becomes Immortal'. The article features computer engineer and futurologist Ray Kurzweil, Director of Engineering at Google Inc., describing the advent of Technological Singularity, a new era in which man and machine will finally merge allowing us to prolong life indefinitely, effectively making man immortal. Through this paradigm of the future I explore our bad relationship with death and the efforts of our technocratic society to overcome it. Through the piece this view is juxtaposed to the one of philosopher Alan Watts, who in his teachings argued that in nature’s game there’s a purpose to dying, that it is not natural for us to wish to prolong life indefinitely and that the idea that death is a terrible thing is a tremendous disease from which our culture in particular suffers.

Secrets of Silicon Valley: Women In Technology

05:47
Thanks for watching the Substance Project! We’d love, love, love it if you would like this video, subscribe to our channel, or share us with a friend! Today’s topic is Women in Technology and the Secrets of Silicon Valley. For more, check out the full article in Glamour Magazine: http://www.glamour.com/inspired/2014/09/women-in-tech-reveal-secrets-of-silicon-valley Although I’ve worked for Google for almost 9 years, I’m embarrassed to admit that I didn’t know exactly what a software engineer did. A few things have changed, influencing my interest in the field and the fact that there aren't enough women in it! First, my first daughter changed my perspective -- how do I encourage her to explore her interests? What careers to I wish I would have known about and explored? Second, I volunteered at an awesome initiative through Google called Made with Code. I truly began to understand what computer science is, and I saw a really incredible creative side to it. I also saw these young girls inspired by the possibility. I even made a new years resolution to write an Android App! Third, fellow Substance Project boss lady Lauren landed a gig at the start up Remind. In the heart of it all! Fact: Women make up only 26% of the computing workforce. Only 18% of computer science undergraduate degrees are given to women (that number DROPPED from 37% in 2985). Here are the 5 Secrets: 1. THERE'S NO JOB SHORTAGE IN THE VALLEY - An Uber software engineer was contacted by 30 companies, despite dropping out of college. 2. THE PAY AND PERKS ARE INSANE - A six-figure starting salary is not unusual for an engineer. 3. DATING: THE ODDS ARE GOOD, BUT THE GOOD ARE ODD - Plenty of guys, but many are immature as they've never had to do their laundry or cook their own food! 4. SEXISM IS REAL - It sucks, but it's true. The "brogrammer" culture can breed discrimination. 5. WOMEN ARE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT - Women are supporting each other, shining a light on sexism, and making the industry better! Thanks for watching. Please like, subscribe, or share!

Coaching Series: What Tech Women Really Want

50:47
Google Tech Talks January, 30 2008 ABSTRACT Many technical women face surprising and similar challenges, which are often unspoken and self-imposed. I will present observations and suggestions around the impostor syndrome, feelings of isolation, tendencies to over-analyze, excessive humility, and reluctance to negotiate. I will also present "best advice" offered by women engineers for women engineers, which is taken from an article that I submitted to IEEE's new Women in Engineering magazine. Speaker: Sue Dorward Sue named her company Sudo Coaching LLC, after the Linux command for performing as superuser. Through coaching, she helps develop tomorrow's technology leaders. Sue trained as an Organizational and Executive Coach at New York University and she earned an MS in Computer Science from Princeton University. As an engineer and later a technology vice president, she led technical teams and projects for online media companies CNET, iVillage, and Hearst Interactive and for pharmaceutical companies such as Bayer and Johnson & Johnson. As a lecturer and researcher, Sue served on the Computer Science Department faculties at Drew University and Smith College, performed research at Bell Laboratories, and was awarded a doctoral fellowship by the National Science Foundation. Sue writes articles for the IEEE's Engineering Management Society newsletter and geekleaders.com. She also has contributed to books on the foundations of coaching and technical project management.

Toni Castells - 2045 - 16 Passing On The Torch [ALBUM]

04:19

Should We Trust Robots, and Should They Trust Us? | Dr. Ayanna Howard | TEDxBermuda

14:57
As robots become more fully interactive with humans during the performance of our day- to-day activities, the role of trust and bias must be examined more carefully. Trust conveys the concept that when interacting with robots, humans tend to exhibit similar behaviors as when interacting with other humans, and thus may misunderstand the risks associated with deferring their decisions to a robot. Bias further impacts this potential risk in that these robotic systems are learning by mimicking our own thinking processes, inheriting our own implicit human biases. In this talk, we will discuss this phenomenon through the lens of robots that interact with people in scenarios that are realizable in the near-term such as in healthcare. Ayanna Howard, Ph.D. is the Linda J. and Mark C. Smith Professor and Chair of the School of Interactive Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Howard’s career focus is on intelligent technologies that must adapt to and function within a human-centered world. Her work, which encompasses advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), assistive technologies, and robotics, has resulted in over 250 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Howard received her B.S. in Engineering from Brown University, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California. To date, her unique accomplishments have been highlighted through a number of awards and articles, including highlights in USA Today, Upscale, and TIME Magazine, as well as being recognized as one of the 23 most powerful women engineers in the world by Business Insider. In 2013, she also founded Zyrobotics, which is currently licensing technology derived from her research and has released their first suite of STEM educational products to engage children of all abilities. Prior to Georgia Tech, Dr. Howard was a senior robotics researcher at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She has also served as the Associate Director of Research for the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines, Chair of the Robotics Ph.D. program, and the Associate Chair for Faculty Development in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

VEX BottleBot 3

03:49
The original two BottleBots were constructed in the summer of 2005 for a feature in a magazine article on VEX. The challenge then was simple: "design a robot which can grab a beverage off a table, open it, and pour it into a cup." The BottleBots would become two of the most popular robots to come out of the VEX Lab. Three years later, the challenge remained the same. This time it was Robot Magazine who asked the IFI engineers to improve upon their previous creation and come up with a better BottleBot. The new IFI intern Tyler Holtzman would use the lessons learned from the original build to design and construct the BottleBot3. This robot included several of the best features from each of the previous BottleBots while incorporating several ways to improve its function. It would be featured in the November/December 2008 issue of Robot Magazine. For more information, go to: http://www.vexrobotics.com/vex-bottlebot3.shtml
