Listen to the words of Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, and Seth Godin and you’ll discover what separates true innovators from everyone else. It all comes down to dots. In his famous commencement speech, Steve Jobs said: "You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something–your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life." Sir Richard Branson has a mantra that runs through the DNA of his companies. The mantra is A-B-C-D. (Always Be Connecting the Dots). In his manifesto, Stop Stealing Dreams, Seth Godin wrote how students today are educated in “collecting dots. Almost none of it spent teaching them the skills necessary to connect dots. The magic of connecting dots is that once you learn the techniques, the dots can change but you’ll still be good at connecting them.” HELPING A CLIENT CONNECT DOTS Recently, this came to light when I was speaking with a client who was noticing things needing correction and frustrated that employees were not seeing, and addressing, the same things. I responded stating it’s not a flaw of his seeing things and wanting to improve them that was the problem. The actual problem was why his employees didn’t see those details. I concluded that this was the single difference between the innovator and the ordinary person: one saw the dots and connected them while others 1) didn’t see them or 2) if they did, they didn’t explore, question, or connect any of them. This aspect of constant attentiveness to how things are applies to companies, products, brands, as well as to personal brands and is the foundation for this thing we call innovation. THE “WHAT IS INNOVATION?” VIDEO Inspired by this discussion and some of today’s more brilliant minds, I decided to write an essay on innovation. The closing lines of the essay struck a chord: So what is innovation? Those other dots. The ones others miss. I often get asked this by organisations and my advice here is to aim for the 80 / 20 rule. That’s 80% for global consistency/framework and 20% for the configuration into the region. The follow up question is then what does that 20% look like? I usually suggest that storytelling as a focused strategy – use the global framework you have been given, then use very local stories about the office environment, the specific work you do in the country, leverage the personal brands of key team members, for example – that’s an easier conversation to have internally and a powerful marketing direction to take.

This thought experiment is to start sharing the litany of lessons I've learned over my past decade teaching myself digital marketing. So I invested a couple of hours into throwing together a working example of how I'd approach their website since the website should be the hub of any businesses' digital marketing efforts. I've lived caddy corner to the high school here in Fitzgerald, Georgia with pets since Christmas Eve 2006. That was the day I brought home, Lizzie. There are two veterinarian offices within my immediate vicinity, Irwin Animal Clinic is the farthest away at six point two miles from my home office. Call it a ten-minute drive. Dr. Smith's office is the closest at only a mile and a half from my home office. Call it a three-minute drive. I've used both vets many times over the years. The only discernible difference between the two #veterinary practices? One veterinary practice is easily found online while the other veterinary practice does not exist online. Irwin Animal Clinic, the subject of this conversational marketing recipe, still does not have a website. In a similar vein, the Irwin Animal Clinic Yelp profile remains unclaimed and thus is not completed. One possible reason for the lack of online presence is the initial, zero-star review given to create the IAC profile on Yelp, which was by a lady that was obviously despondent at the loss of her doxie. My buddy, George. My buddy, George. I lost my rescue buddy, George, right as we pulled into the Irwin Animal Clinic parking lot. George drew his last breath on my lap, in my arms. At which point, I was broken. I was broke financially. And I was emotionally shattered from losing George just six weeks after losing my baby girl Lizzie. The team of ladies at IAC took care of George’s cremation for me and added it to my tab for me to pay as soon as I could. It took me close to six months to catch up my account, but the entire IAC team were always compassionate and professional with me and with my animals. My point? The current #onlinereputation of Irwin Animal Clinic doesn’t match their reputation with their customers. According to Porter's five forces framework the competitive environment in an industry is influenced by five forces: • The Threat of new entrants; • The Threat of substitute products; • The Rivalry among existing firms; • The Bargaining power of buyers; • And the Bargaining power of suppliers. The five forces model teaches us that competition has multiple dimensions. It is important how many direct competitors we have, but it is also important if clients can choose to use alternative products, or if new entrants are likely to enter the market and increase current levels of competition. What do you mean by this? Well, I have always to emphasize that first I am well aware that let’s call it like this – the twentieth century’s over. Which means all not only communists solution but all the big leftist projects of the twentieth century failed. Not only did Stalinist communism although there its failure is much more paradoxical. Most of the countries where communists are still in power like China, Vietnam – their communists in power appear to be the most efficient managers of a very wildly productive capitalism. So okay, that one failed. I think that also and here I in a very respectful way disagree with your – by your I mean American neo-Keynesian leftists, Krugman, Stiglitz and so on. I also think that this Keynesian welfare state model is passé. In the conditions of today’s global economy it no longer works. For the welfare state to work you need a strong nation state which can impose a certain fiscal politics and so on and so on. When you have global market it doesn’t work. And the third point which is most problematic for my friends, the third leftist vision which is deep in the heart of all leftists that I know – this idea of critically rejecting alienated representative democracy and arguing for local grass root democracy where it’s not that you just delegate to the others. Your representatives to act for you, but people immediately engage in locally managing their affairs and so on. I think this is a nice idea as far as it goes but it’s not the solution. It’s a very limited one. And if I may be really evil here I frankly I wouldn’t like to live in a stupid society where I would have to be all the time engaged in local communitarian politics and so on and so on. My idea is to live in a society where some invisible alienated machinery takes care of things so that I can do whatever I want – watch movies, read and write philosophical books and so on. But so I’m well aware that in all its versions radical left projects of the twentieth century came to an end and for one decade maybe we were all Fukuyamaists for the nineties. By Fukuyamaism I mean the idea that basically we found if not the best formula at least the least bad formula. Liberal democratic capitalism with elements of rebel state and so on and so on. And even the left played this game. You know we were fighting for less racism, women’s right, gay rights, whatever tolerance. But basically we accepted the system. I think and even Fukuyama himself is no longer a Fukuyamaist as I know that if there is a lesson of September 11 if other event is that no we don’t have the answer. That not only is liberal democratic capitalism not the universal model and is just a time of slow historical progress for it to be accepted everywhere. But again try now in Singapore and other examples of very successful economies today demonstrate that this, let’s call it ironically eternal marriage between democracy and capitalism it’s coming to an end. What we are more and more getting today is a capitalism which is brutally efficient but it no longer needs democracy for its functioning. That’s my first point. My second point is that the problems that we are confronting today we can list them in different ways but my point is they are all problems of commons. This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today.
