Career Advice : How to Become a Database Administrator or DBA: Career Guidance animation videos
Career Advice : How to Become a Database Administrator or DBA: Career Guidance animation videos What is a database? Companies storing vast quantities of data use databases which are looked after by DBA's. This short, animated video will give you a high level overview of this role. This video is suitable for career seekers and anyone else wanting an overview/description of this role. We at funza have interviewed professionals regarded as experts in their domain and come up with this video. It focuses on providing answers to these questions: a. Overview of the role b. Requirements of the role c. Joys of the role d. Challenges of the role e. An average day f. Future prospects References: http://www.geteducated.com/career-center/detail/computer-scientist-and-database-administrator http://money.usnews.com/careers/best-jobs/database-administrator Overview: Let us understand the term Database administrator by observing an activity most of us indulge in. Let me explain the concept by mapping it to a common activity -The activity is withdrawing money from a bank. While you are withdrawing money, there are quite a few things happening in the background. Thousands of other customers may be doing the same thing, and this, is not affecting your session.and this is not affecting you in any way. ACCESS to your data is IMPORTANT where banking is concerned. You could ask your bank for past account transactions, and the bank has has an obligation to provide it. Since banking is a frequent activity, performance is taken for granted. When you are at an ATM, for example, you expect your transaction to be completed in a short period of timequickly. Now let us look at things from a banks perspective. What we are seeing here is a vast quantity of data that the bank has to store and provide its customers.. This data is stored on one or more DATABASES. But it is as we saw, it's much more than just DATA.. There is the concept of concurrency where data can be accessed by multiple customers. The concept of data security, where your data is protected The concept of performance where data is accessible in acceptable time frames. data can only be seen by you. Performance and high availability, where data is always available. Data and the this extra functionality around data are is made possible by a DBMS or data base management system. And the people responsible for managing a DBMS are DBA's or database administrators. What does a DBA Do? Now any company that needs to store vast quantities of data will use one or more databases. Thus, databases are present in a wide spectrum of companies. And not surprisingly these companies recruit DBA's to look after this data. DBAs are involved in a variety of activities: a. They install and maintain databases. b. They upgrade databases to newer versions when available c. They take backups of databases so data can be recovered if a system crashes d. They also export data across databases Monitoring databases is another component of a DBAs average day. They run tests to measure the health of a database. For example databases can fill up which means that no more information can be added. When this happens work can grind to a halt. Similarly performance can become an issue resulting in Calls to Customer Service Agents which companies never want. So this means that a DBA has to also be a problem solver DBAs also plan and implement security measures to safeguard databases. As a customer you would not want your banking or medical records to fall into wrong hands. Lastly DBAs spend a substantial amount of time in meetings with company management and vendors.

How Long Do Background Checks Take?
Getting someone’s complete background in a matter of seconds is pure Hollywood fiction. The reality is that it’ll usually take several days to complete a background check. Here’s why. Let’s say you want to check a candidate’s criminal history. You may want to consider searching courts in jurisdictions in which the candidate has lived, worked or gone to school. There are more than 3,200 jurisdictions in the United States where public records can be obtained. And the manner in which these records can be accessed may vary from court to court. While some courts may make their records available for online searches, approximately 30% of US courthouses require in-person direct access. So background check companies, such as HireRight who performs real-time criminal records searches, maintain a network of court runners to facilitate in-person courthouse record searches in these jurisdictions. As you can imagine, conducting such in-person searches takes time. Tic tic tic. It adds up. OK, so now your background check provider has conducted the real-time criminal records searches you’ve requested. At this point, they need to reasonably review any information obtained from the courts prior to reporting that information to you. Your background check partner should help make sure that the information belongs to your candidate and is otherwise legally reportable in accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (the “FCRA”), applicable state laws, and search depth. If you also want to verify the candidate’s professional references, education, and previous employment, then other search dependencies may well come into play. For example, if a previous employer, school, or reference doesn’t respond in a timely manner or worse, is no longer in business, then the background check may be delayed. A thorough, accurate background check is critical consideration for many employers when bringing someone onboard. To help expedite the background check process and achieve a faster time-to-hire, you may want to advise candidates to have W-2s from previous employers and records from schools they attended available in case they’re requested; the faster they can provide them, the quicker the turnaround time can be. Candidates may also want to contact people they used as references and request they respond to a reference check quickly. Stay in touch with your candidates and let them know where they are in the process. While the speed and turnaround time of the screening process often is a priority for the prospective employer, the candidate, and HireRight alike, in the end - and to all involved – it’s the accuracy of the information that’s paramount. Visit http://www.hireright.com/resources/library/?utm_medium=social%20media&utm_campaign=youtube&lsmr=Social%20Media&lso=Social%20Media&cid=70132000000lgTk for more background checking resources.

Making Job Scheduling Simple and Affordable
Simplicity and affordability are not concepts typically affiliated with job scheduling or workload automation. As a result, many organizations still put up with hand written scripts and legacy job schedulers. While the former can lead to significant challenges in terms of documentation, maintenance, and consistency, the latter often are costly in terms of licensing and operation. Join EMA Research Director, Torsten Volk, and Skybot Director, Pat Cameron, for this on-demand Webinar that examines best practices to simplify your job scheduling and workload automation environments. You will learn: - Ways to gradually replace scheduling scripts, such as cron - How to easily automate SAP, Oracle, SQL Server and Informatica jobs, events, reports and variant changes - How to centrally manage user profiles from your LDAP/AD server - Techniques for best grouping jobs and agents for maximum efficiency - Approaches for managing events across Windows, UNIX and Linux servers - How to easily identify performance trends and potential workflow issues - Methods for making your workloads SOX, PCI and HIPAA compliant - How to simplify file transfer between remote systems

Oracle's Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Uses Smartcard-Secure Sessions
Oracle is yet another player joining the fray of the many providers offering virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solutions. At VMworld 2012, I spoke with Stuart Scurti, Enterprise Account Manager for Oracle's VDI Infrastructure. I asked Scurti to tell me what makes Oracle's VDI better than all the competitors also on the VMworld show floor. Here are the features and differentiators, said Scurti: • Certified on all Oracle applications. • They're not just a Windows OS shop. Can connect to any operating system you want to. • Has an integrated smart card. By pulling the smart card and bringing it to another machine, you can session in and out from one desktop to any other and be at the same point with your applications or anything else you want. • Lower your total cost of ownership because you're not refreshing a desktop every 3 years but rather 7+ years. • Lower power costs. Typical desktop runs at 150 watts, Oracle's virtual desktop runs at about 4 watts. Dice.com celebrates everything that makes a career in technology great. Part 2 SQL query to get organization hierarchy
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2014/05/part-2-sql-query-to-get-organization.html To get the best out of this video, the following concepts need to be understood first. These are already discussed in SQL Server Tutorial. 1. Self-Join - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnYSN_7qwgg 2. CTE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXB5b-7HJHk 3. Recursive CTE - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGoV0wTMCg0 Here is the problem definition: 1. Employees table contains the following columns a) EmployeeId, b) EmployeeName c) ManagerId 2. If an EmployeeId is passed, the query should list down the entire organization hierarchy i.e who is the manager of the EmployeeId passed and who is managers manager and so on till full hierarchy is listed. For example, Scenario 1: If we pass David's EmployeeId to the query, then it should display the organization hierarchy starting from David. Scenario 2: If we pass Lara's EmployeeId to the query, then it should display the organization hierarchy starting from Lara. We will be Employees table for this demo. SQL to create and populate Employees table with test data Create table Employees ( EmployeeID int primary key identity, EmployeeName nvarchar(50), ManagerID int foreign key references Employees(EmployeeID) ) GO Insert into Employees values ('John', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Mark', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Steve', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Tom', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Lara', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Simon', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('David', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Ben', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Stacy', NULL) Insert into Employees values ('Sam', NULL) GO Update Employees Set ManagerID = 8 Where EmployeeName IN ('Mark', 'Steve', 'Lara') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 2 Where EmployeeName IN ('Stacy', 'Simon') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 3 Where EmployeeName IN ('Tom') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 5 Where EmployeeName IN ('John', 'Sam') Update Employees Set ManagerID = 4 Where EmployeeName IN ('David') GO Here is the SQL that does the job Declare @ID int ; Set @ID = 7; WITH EmployeeCTE AS ( Select EmployeeId, EmployeeName, ManagerID From Employees Where EmployeeId = @ID UNION ALL Select Employees.EmployeeId , Employees.EmployeeName, Employees.ManagerID From Employees JOIN EmployeeCTE ON Employees.EmployeeId = EmployeeCTE.ManagerID ) Select E1.EmployeeName, ISNULL(E2.EmployeeName, 'No Boss') as ManagerName From EmployeeCTE E1 LEFT Join EmployeeCTE E2 ON E1.ManagerID = E2.EmployeeId

08 common Interview question and answers - Job Interview Skills
08 common Interview question and answers - Job Interview Skills 1. "Tell me a little about yourself." You should take this opportunity to show your communication skills by speaking clearly and concisely in an organized manner. Because there is no right or wrong answer for this question, it is important to appear friendly. 2. "What are your strengths?" This is a popular interview question. They want to know what you think of yourself. Although this is a general question, there is a wrong and right answer. The wrong answer is a generic answer saying you are organized and friendly. Although it will not hurt you during the interview, it will certainly not help you either. Answer this question based on the type of job you are applying for. 3. "What are your weaknesses?" For this answer, you should display a weakness that can be seen as a strength. There are many types of answers that will work. Some answers will be good answers for certain jobs, while the same answer will be a bad answer for a different job. Select an answer that will work for the position you are applying for. 4. "Where do you see yourself in five years?" This question primarily depends on where you are in your career. A person with 5 years of experience will have different goals than a person with no work experience. This question is asked to see how serious a candidate is about his or her career. Some people might not know their goals, and some people might have goals of becoming rich and retiring early. Those are incorrect answers for this question. The type of answer you want to give is an ambitious answer that shows you really love your career. A good interviewer will read between the lines and find out if a person is going to be a hard worker or just a mediocre one. Being descriptive and shooting for a big goal is something interviewers want to hear. 5. "What do you know about our company?" A typical job interview question, asked to find out how much company research you have conducted, is "What do you know about this company?" Prepare in advance, and in a word, research, so you can provide relevant and current information about your prospective employer to the interviewer. 6. "Are you good at dealing with change?" Dealing with change is common in the work place. A simple yes will not be sufficient to impress the interviewer. This is another type of question where everyone will have similar answers. Of course everyone is going to claim being excellent dealing with change. You got to communicate that you are really good at dealing with change. 7. "Do you work well under pressure?" In most cases, the best answer to this question is answering yes. Working well under pressure is a good trait to have. However, I think if you answer that you work the same with pressure and without pressure, the interviewer will be more impressed. However, you will need to explain in words why this is better. 8. "How do you make important decisions?" There are many ways to answer this question, and if you have a reasonable method of making decisions, it will probably be sufficient. One answer I thought of included not being afraid of asking your manager. You can follow up by saying even the best needs mentoring, and you always want to improve. So basically, this could work as an answer, but depending on the job, you might have a better shot with an answer like my example.

Day 2 Wrap-Up | Oracle OpenWorld 2013
Open source plays a key role in IT innovation strategy this year and it's obvious from watching Oracle do its thing. In fact, Recent years have seen the emergence of a system in which the open source and free software are keeping innovation in IT world. This system takes root in some large web companies that do not consider their core system as the owner, but as technologies that they can share with others and pool. At the Oracle OpenWorld 2013 held from September 22 to 26 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA, the company offered IT organizations with a one stop shop from heterogeneous collection of newer cloud-based solutions, middleware solutions and data sources to legacy applications for IT operational and business processes. For developers looking to automate some of these processes, Oracle provided tools such as Concurrent Manager and Process Scheduler for Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) and PeopleSoft or PL/SQL scripts to automate Oracle database processes. Managing DB dependent development How do you manage development when development depends on underlying databases? Databases have no data control like source control for code. Because these development environments depend on databases and those databases are large and/or complex to build the build time can take anywhere between a few days to weeks. ManageEngine, which offers enterprise IT management solutions including network, server, desktop and application management, announced significant upgrades to the Oracle database monitoring feature in Applications Manager, its application performance monitoring solution. The latest upgrade improves tuning and troubleshooting of Oracle systems by enhancing real-time visibility into the health and performance of Oracle databases and their related applications. Whenever a business-critical Oracle application or process is underperforming, IT teams tend to point fingers at areas that are not well understood. Applications Manager monitors across the Oracle application stack — and any other heterogeneous set of servers, app servers and databases. The performance insight now offered by Applications Manager reveals exactly what's running and whether a problem is at the application, database or network level; so, you can solve performance problems faster and spend less time. Oracle 12c is capable of managing a set of guests or "pluggable databases" beneath its core system. Darryl Smith, Chief Database Architect for EMC IT, shared that Oracle databases allow database administrators to focus on getting in front of the business, understand what their problems are, so that IT can be more agile and responsive. He said once DBAs know about architecture and other aspects, automation can drive data protection-as-a-service (DPaaS) and DBAs can build automating the full application stack, backups, built in security, and a built-in DevOps model. He added DPaaS can literally set service levels for backup, set priorities, but to leverage DPaaS, DBAs need to be in control of both backup and recovery, and a tool such as DD Boost helps achieve that. More automation Most of the companies today operate in heterogeneous applications and platforms and are looking to more easy way to communicate across different platforms. Products from Oracle like Oracle EBS, PeopleSoft and JDEdwards have been designed for developers to more easily build and manage these cross-application and cross-platform batch processes. Beyond today's solutions, one of the goals of developers is to run job scheduler with technologies including Java, Web Services and Oracle Stored Procedures to allow it to hook into third-party applications. Oracle provides DBAs an enterprise automation solution to schedule a PL/SQL, Export or Import task once, but execute it multiple times across different Oracle DBs within a single interface. Let us talk about how to attend a telephonic interview. We all know at least we all have experienced a face to face interview. When I say a telephonic interview people say it is not that important or people don’t consider being important, but letting me tell you what It is one of the most important round in the interviewing process. Normally let me tell you why there is a telephonic interview. A telephonic interview is in a situation where if a candidate stays outside the place where the interviewer is from or he is not able to make time for the interview or say the interviewer does not have a 1hr or 2 for him to spare for the interview process. So in that cases we have a telephonic interview and normally telephonic interview goes on for 20 to 30min if a single person is interviewing you or it might be 30 to 40 min depending if they are 2 -3 people who are interviewing you. So these are the tips and tricks that you have in mind before go ahead and start the interview. The first thing is always have your resume in front of you, your resume or your cover letter in front of you because one of the top most asked questions in any kind of interview is walk through your resume. So when an interviewer is asking you that question or when the interviewer is shooting the first set of questions you don’t have to run around go ahead and get your resume and then it wastes a lot of time so have your resume right in front of you and make sure you have a high quality phone. High quality phone in the sense make sure you are in calm environment there is no much disturbances and always sit straight take a deep breath and relax for 5 – 10 min before you start the process and make sure you do not sit on couch with laid back position or you do not do multi-tasking say you are texting or you are on Facebook and you are talking to the interviewer or say smoking or chewing gums please do not do all these things when you attend the telephonic interview and also smile on the phone smile on the phone in the sense when the interviewer and you are having conversation make sure you have a smile say there is a conversation at times there would be a situation you have to smile on the call and make sure it must be a professional conversation and always focus on your language focus on your language do not come up with native accent make sure the interviewer and you have a professional conversation do not get into multi lingual conversation people of different states have different accent please make sure the conversation you have with the interviewer is always professional and if possible have your linkedin profile or a video profile always there on the internet and you can guide the interviewer I have my linkedin profile just in case you want to go through my linkedin profile this is the link you can go through and the most important thing keep in mind do not ask selfish questions because this is one of your initial stages of interview before you call for a face to face. Do not ask questions like “what would be my CTC “? What would be my salary? What are the benefits I would get? These are selfish questions that you have to avoid before you go ahead and attend a telephonic interview make sure you make notes. These are the things when you attending a n interview have a pen and a sheet of paper right in front of you ask the question like what is your name sir ? Or if the person is introducing himself by his name write down the name and his designation and before you cut the call or before you go ahead and disconnect the call make sure you ask what is the next time when would I get to know my results after how long would you get back to me say if the interviewer says about a week just write it on 1 weak from now and always say the interviewer I am going write a thank you email to you. A simple thank you email can be written to the interviewer so just inform him and send out a simple email to the interviewer so these are the tips and tricks you have to keep in mind before you attend a telephonic interview. Coding With Python :: Learn API Basics to Grab Data with Python
Coding With Python :: Learn API Basics to Grab Data with Python This is a basic introduction to using APIs. APIs are the "glue" that keep a lot of web applications running and thriving. Without APIs much of the internet services you love might not even exist! APIs are easy way to connect with other websites & web services to use their data to make your site or application even better. This simple tutorial gives you the basics of how you can access this data and use it. If you want to know if a website has an api, just search "Facebook API" or "Twitter API" or "Foursquare API" on google. Some APIs are easy to use (like Locu's API which we use in this video) some are more complicated (Facebook's API is more complicated than Locu's). More about APIs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Api Code from the video: http://pastebin.com/tFeFvbXp If you want to learn more about using APIs with Django, learn at http://CodingForEntrepreneurs.com for just $25/month. We apply what we learn here into a Django web application in the GeoLocator project. The Try Django Tutorial Series is designed to help you get used to using Django in building a basic landing page (also known as splash page or MVP landing page) so you can collect data from potential users. Collecting this data will prove as verification (or validation) that your project is worth building. Furthermore, we also show you how to implement a Paypal Button so you can also accept payments. Django is awesome and very simple to get started. Step-by-step tutorials are to help you understand the workflow, get you started doing something real, then it is our goal to have you asking questions... "Why did I do X?" or "How would I do Y?" http://www.usagreencardcenter.com Immigration attorneys from Cohen & Grigsby explains how they assist employers in running classified ads with the goal of NOT finding any qualified applicants, and the steps they go through to disqualify even the most qualified Americans in order to secure green cards for H-1b workers. See what Bush and Congress really mean by a "shortage of skilled U.S. workers." Microsoft, Oracle, Hewlett-Packard, and thousands of other companies are running fake ads in Sunday newspapers across the country each week.

The Message to ISVs from Open World. (13:010) Track List created with http://www.vinjavideo.com. --- --- How Oracle plans to change the world in the cloud | #oow15 by Amber Johnson | Oct 27, 2015 “The cloud is transforming the way businesses work” and soon the cloud will be affecting the way we play as well, said Dan Miller, SVP of ISV/OEM and Java sales at Oracle. “A lot of partners are ready to put their application on the platform and either into their private cloud or Oracle’s public cloud,” Miller said. “We’re going to change the world in the cloud,” Miller said of Oracle. A vibrant, dynamic bilateral ecosystem Independent software vendors “are absolutely relevant to the market,” remarked Miller during an interview with John Furrier and Jeff Frick, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, during Oracle OpenWorld 2015. Oracle is focusing on its ISVs by “ensuring the best architectural design” in addition to a “go-to market in the scale of the cloud … and vibrant, dynamic bilateral ecosystem.” Oracle is “not just a platform.” Miller said his department is “ensuring the success that they have had with Oracle in the past” while presenting “literally hundreds of partners raring to go.” Currently, Oracle has “thousands of partners in trial Platform as a Service,” a “test drive” of its portfolio. The company is also sponsoring “direct engineer-to-engineer conversations.” Oracle is having “one-on-one partner engagement” where the “concepts are developed” and partners are asking “How do we do that?” In some cases, the partners are even saying “Hurry up!” Miller reported. He stated that partners do not do that with many companies, with the exception of Mircosoft. @theCUBE #oow15
Your personality and your brain | Scott Schwefel | TEDxBrookings
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. We all have a unique personality, but we also show up to others in ways we don’t know. Understanding how our brains become consciously aware of ourselves, and in turn, everyone else teaches how we can connect, adapt and ultimately influence others. It all starts with knowing when we are truly self-aware, and when we aren’t, how to get there quickly and easily. Scott Schwefel built and sold Minnesota’s largest technology training company. To get there he used personality assessments to help his people understand each other and understand clients and customers. His study of personality led to an awareness of brain science and how our brains enable us to communicate with each other. Scott has taught these principles of brain science and communications techniques throughout North America, Europe and Asia, and to over 1300 CEOs globally. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Christophe Pettus: PostgreSQL When It's Not Your Job
In this DevOps world, developers are increasingly being asked to manage the database as well. In a few brisk minutes, we will talk about (nearly) everything you need to know to bring up, tune, and keep a PostgreSQL database health. We'll go over installation, basic tuning, backups, disaster recovery, and helpful tools and techniques. It's a very rare startup these days that has a full-time DBA on staff; mostly, the developers are pressed into service to handle the database as well. In this talk, we'll present the survival skills required to manage your PostgreSQL database while trying to push the product out the door. We'll cover: Installation. Basic tuning (it's easier than you think). Performance, including things you must not do. Backups and disaster recovery. Helpful tools, tips and tricks. No PostgreSQL experience required.

Key Highlights of Java: Platform Independent: This allows programmers to develop applications that can run on any operating system. Usability of Java: Java is most widely used programming language. It is present everywhere. It really doesn't matter which domain you are working in, you will surely come across Java sooner or later! Open Source: The good news is that Java is available for free! All the development tools and the environment (JRE & JDK) that is used to develop Java applications are absolutely free of cost. How to Setup Amazon Web Services EC2 Instance with Apache, PHP, MySQL
How to Setup Amazon Web Services EC2 Instance with Apache, PHP, MySQL Instructions: Go to http://aws.amazon.com/ and create a new account if you do not have an account already. A credit card or debit is required. Sign into your AWS account under console management. Select EC2 and create a new instance. Choose one of the Ubuntu AMIs, and leave everything default. Under Security groups, create a new security group with SSH and HTTP. Name your key and download. Under the terminal, maneuver to the key and chmod 400 to make sure that the permissions are correct. Under windows, you may have to run as administrator the command prompt or cygwin to chmod properly. Or you can use the command that I did, which was: chown :Users testTutorial.pem Then I did: chmod 400 testTutorial.pem Allows only me to read Then: ssh -i testTutorial.pem [email protected](public IP) Once you are on the Ubuntu AMI, you can start to mess around with the packages to install. I recommend the following: Run the command: sudo apt-get install apache2 libapache2-mod-php5 php5 mysql-server php5-mysql You can also get phpadmin if you would like. Remember to restart the apache service: service apache2 restart Then, run a secure installation of mysql: mysql_secure_installation Go put in your browser the public IP. It works! But what if you want to change the index.html Well, go cd ../../var/www In this directory www, you can edit the index.html sudo vim index.html You can change the index.html to anything you want using the editor of your choice. The site changes.
