"PureScript (Maybe This Time We Get JavaScript Right)" by Bodil Stokke

44:31
The web browser is the world's most ubiquitous user interface. Sadly, this means we're all basically stuck in an abusive relationship with JavaScript. Obviously not a desirable position to find ourselves in, we've tried breaking out of the JS trap in a variety of ways: JS dialects (solving no design flaws but at least looking prettier) and JS as a compilation target (resulting, mostly, in unappealingly large output to support the emulated runtimes). So when I found myself having to build a system with real deliverable size constraints, my only options seemed to be JS itself, or TypeScript, which doesn't add much to JS but at least provides a modicum of type checking. After a few months of fighting TypeScript, though, I'd had enough. Happily, my frustration coincided with the advent of PureScript. At first glance, PureScript looks and feels like Haskell, but there's hardly any extraneous machinery. The PureScript compiler generates very concise JS, and the language itself is designed with the platform's constraints in mind. Yet it offers things like higher kinded polymorphism, type classes and similar deep Haskell magic. More appealingly, it comes with a growing number of libraries for coping with the browser as a platform: functional DOM manipulation, reactive programming, and more. It turned out to be a delight, getting out of my tangled mess of JavaScript and rebuilding it all in PureScript, and I'd like to show you how and why. by Bodil Stokke (@bodil) - Future Ad Labs Bodil is a compulsive conference speaker in the fields of functional programming and internets technologies, and is a co-organiser of multiple developer conferences in Scandinavia and the UK, mostly because she's still learning how to stop. In her spare time, she works as a developer for Future Ad Labs, a London based startup that wants to make advertising a productive member of society. Her favourite pony is Pinkie Pie.

How to code a Theme Switcher with Vanilla JavaScript

18:41
Hi, My name is Andy Leverenz and I work as a Product Designer at Dribbble. For fun, I design, code, and write. Check out my blog called Web-Crunch https://web-crunch.com where I publish design and development tutorials with the occasional vlog. ==================== Welcome to another Let's Build: with JavaScript tutorial. In this installment, we'll take a look building a theme switcher for different parts of a web page using CSS variables and vanilla JavaScript. Building a theme switcher has never been easier since the introduction of modern CSS variables. If you've been a Sass advocate you likely understand the point of a variable in your CSS code. In my own work, I use variables to keep my code as DRY (don't repeat yourself) and consistent as possible. With Sass, you can't quite hook into the same code with JavaScript as you can with CSS variables. Declaring variables on given elements in your regular CSS allows you to traverse the CSS for those handy variables. In this video guide, I'll show you have to use some modern techniques in both JavaScript and CSS to achieve this awesome result. Steve Kinney: Bringing Back the 1990s: The Revenge of JavaScript Style Sheets | JSConf EU 2017

27:03
http://2017.jsconf.eu/speakers/steve-kinney-bringing-back-the-1990s-the-revenge-of-javascript-style-sheets.html JavaScript Style Sheets (JSSS) was a technology introduced by Netscape in 1996. Chances are, you’ve never heard of JSSS, since it was available in Netscape Communicator 4.0. They allowed you to define custom styling rules for your web pages. You’re probably more familiar with its competitor at the time—CSS. They were pretty cool though. JSSS allowed the developer to style the DOM using a full programming language with variables, conditionals, and functions. The obvious spoiler alert here is that CSS won and JSSS lost, right? It’s not that simple. A lot of the ideas from JSSS have slowly been creeping back into our toolset. SASS brought programming logic back into styling our applications. CSS picked up variables and the ability to do calculations. Finally, the React community has been—maybe unknowingly—bringing JSSS back from the dead. In this talk, we’ll take a good hard look at JSSS and the ways in which JSSS has had enduring legacy after its untimely demise.

Full Screen Video Background (The Right Way) using HTML, CSS, Bootstrap

11:07
This tutorial will show you in just over 10 minutes how to create a stunning video background on your website. We're going to be using the latest techniques and a small JS helper to allow it to work perfectly on internet explorer as well. When I say the right way, I mean the best possible way so it is supported on most devices. We will be using: HTML5, CSS, Bootstrap and object-fit-videos.js, accessible here: https://github.com/TricomB2B/object-fit-videos. It's highly advisable to use SASS for this for ease of use, but I've done it using plain CSS. An HTML5 Full Screen Video on your website can make a massive impact. It's an amazing thing if done right. You want to also make sure your Full screen HTML video works on as many devices as possible. Hopefully this tutorial will assist you in learning how to do that!

6 Eureka Moment Why is JQuery Plugin and Javascript library linked right before the body ends

06:08
Often wondered why do the Developers link Jquery and Javascript right before thge body ends ....i saw them do so ,but never heard them explain and even if they did ,it was so less that my thirst for knowledge would never be satisfied .....when i finally understood ,like usual , i felt one of those aha moments wherein a individual feels god like and goes into delirium stages even without consuming alcohol ...everything seen thereafter seems rudimentary and ultra easy .....these aha moments are special ...for the record ,one links it at the end because the painter wants all his tools to have loaded on the canvas body ...thgis tools could be paragraphs ,anchor ,text areas, images ,form on which he has written plugins for changes to take effect but realise that the doctor needs the patient to perform the operation... without the elements ,what will our jquery target ---will it traget thin air ? This is why we make the entire canvas (body ) containing all elements load before we link the javascript or Jquery libraries .......I know that even for a moment you must be feeling god like ....if you do ,drop in a thanks , Cheers - Amlan Dutta (Founder of playvila.com(in production)

Teaching CSS to JavaScripters

31:50
Some JavaScript professionals do not know CSS as well as they’d like to. In order to help them, PPK decided to write a book “CDD for JavaScripters”, where he will explain CSS in terms that JavaScripters will understand. But what are those terms? What kind of teaching would JavaScripters expect? Is there a CSS mental model that is different from a JavaScript mental model? Is CSS a programming language? Does that matter for teaching or learning CSS? PPK will give a brief outline of where he’s standing right now on these questions. The majority of the session will be used for a discussion with the audience. How should he teach CSS? Why is it so hard for some to understand it? What are the least-understood parts of CSS? We hope this discussion will yield valuable feedback. Javascript: Your New Overlord

In this keynote presentation at JAXConf 2012, Douglas "The JavaScript Guy" Crockford asserts that JavaScript has become the most important programming language in the world. "The first time I saw JavaScript in 1995 I thought this is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I said that. And I was pretty confident that I was right. ... In looking deeply at it I discovered it's got lambdas in it! Suddenly all this potential opened up." ** For many more talks from JAX Conf 2012, head to http://mrkn.co/txtch where we will be posting them as they become available.

Screencast #66: Table Styling 2, Fixed Header and Highlighting

26:27
Just a couple of quick tricks, from scratch, on coding up tables. We use the proper semantic tags for a table header and then set it to a fixed position so when scrolling the table the header is always visible. Then we implement row AND column highlighting with a bit of semi-clever JavaScript. Recorded July 1, 2009.

The second in my series of videos on moving comfortably away from jQuery and toward using native JavaScript APIs - the stuff baked into your browser. In it I go over the basic forms of CSS class manipulation and their syntaxes, including jQuery, the classList API, and Classie - the best option out there, in my humble opinion. You can see/play around with the project on CodePen here: http://codepen.io/hkfoster/pen/yGElx You can grab Classie here: https://github.com/desandro/classie And you can see my performance tests here: http://jsperf.com/class-manipulation-has http://jsperf.com/class-manipulation-add http://jsperf.com/class-manipulation-remove http://jsperf.com/class-manipulation-toggle If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them below. Blockquotes are useful for quoting blocks of content from another source within your web page 1. [blockquote] element can be used with any HTML that you want as the quote. For simple text quotes bootstrap recomends using a [p] element. 2. For identifying the source of the quote, use the [footer] element. Wrap the name of the source work using [cite] element. On hover the title attribute value will be displayed as a tooltip. 3. To right-align the blockquote content, use .blockquote-reverse class on the [blockquote] element [blockquote class="blockquote-reverse"] [p]By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail[/p] [footer] This famous quote is by [cite title="Benjamin Franklin"] Benjamin Franklin [/cite] [/footer] [/blockquote] Bootstrap Ordered List : For an Ordered List use the [ol] element [ol] [li]India[/li] [li]USA[/li] [li]UK[/li] [li]Australia[/li] [li]Canada[/li] [/ol] Bootstrap Unordered List : For an Unordered List use the [ul] element [ul] [li]India[/li] [li]USA[/li] [li]UK[/li] [li]Australia[/li] [li]Canada[/li] [/ul] To place all list items of ordered or unordered list on a single line use the .list-inline class [ul class="list-inline"] [li]India[/li] [li]USA[/li] [li]UK[/li] [li]Australia[/li] [li]Canada[/li] [/ul] To remove the default list-style of ordered and unordered lists use the .list-unstyled class [ul class="list-unstyled"] [li] India [ul class="list-unstyled"] [li]Andhra Pradesh[/li] [li]Tamil Nadu[/li] [li]Kerala[/li] [/ul] [/li] [li] USA [ul] [li]Alabama[/li] [li]Alaska[/li] [li]Iowa[/li] [/ul] [/li] [li]UK[/li] [li]Australia[/li] [li]Canada[/li] [/ul] For creating a list of terms with their associated descriptions use [dl] [dt] and [dd] tags [dl] [dt]ASP.NET[/dt] [dd]Framework for developing web applications[/dd] [dt]jQuery[/dt] [dd]JavaScript library that works across a multitude of browsers[/dd] [dt]SQL[/dt] [dd]The standard language for relational database management systems[/dd] [/dl] To make terms and descriptions in [dl] line up side-by-side use .dl-horizontal class [dl class="dl-horizontal"] [dt]ASP.NET[/dt] [dd]Framework for developing web applications[/dd] [dt]jQuery[/dt] [dd]JavaScript library that works across a multitude of browsers[/dd] [dt]SQL[/dt] [dd]The standard language for relational database management systems[/dd] [/dl] Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2016/06/bootstrap-blockquotes-and-lists.html Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?sort=dd&view=1

JSCamp Talk: Jed Schmidt - Markup and Style without HTML and CSS

28:44
Much of the complexity of writing JavaScript apps comes from stringing together other technologies: not just HTML and CSS, but the increasingly popular template engines and pre-processors that we use produce them. In this talk, Jed will show you how to eliminate your app's dependencies and simplify your workflow with one small trick: unifying your app's code, style, and markup into one language. Jed is a JavaScript developer based in Tokyo, and has been using node.js since just before its debut in 2009. He maintains a variety of open-source JavaScript libraries from database bindings to DOM builders, and has built several fun projects, including 140byt.es, a tweet-sized code golfing contest, and Ramendan, a grueling month-long test of ramen devotion.

DrupalCon Latin America 2015: Choosing the right frontend style guide workflow for your project

46:36
Speakers: Aaron Stanush Frontend style guides (or pattern libraries) have exploded onto to the scene of web development. You can now publicly view the inner workings CSS and documentation of popular websites and web apps such as Starbucks, Github, Yelp, Disqus, and the BBC. How were these guides built? Who uses them? And most importantly, how did they choose which approach to take? In this session we’ll first take a look at the landscape of methods, including pattern libraries, Atomic Design, and Style Guide Driven Development (SDD). Finding your workflow Then, we’ll talk about how you can adapt these approaches to fit your (or your team’s) desired workflow. There are two broad workflows we’ll look at, discussing the pros and cons of each, as well as what tools are out there to use: Outside Drupal This approach involves creating the initial style guide and prototypes before even starting on the Drupal environment. This allows the team to get ahead of the UX and design work while using basic HTML/CSS to rapidly iterate ideas. These artifacts serve as the blueprints and foundation for the site and can be leveraged throughout the project. Inside Drupal This method uses the Drupal development environment itself as a way to prototype and style pages. The style guide can also be automatically generated from the development code. This requires an advanced knowledge of the “design in the browser” philosophy, but can save time and effort in the long run. What you’ll learn An introduction to style guides and pattern libraries The philosophy behind Style Guide Driven Development Platforms for creating style guides and prototypes Tools for automating your style guide documentation How to adapt these approaches and tools to fit your workflow How the process fits with the roles your team members

Balancing Object-Functional Design in React.js Guided by Tests by Naresh Jain

02:07:24
When we think of OO, most people think of modeling THE real world in software by mapping every real world object (nouns) to entities in software. These entities are then modeled using Is-A-Has-A relationship to build complex, polymorphic hierarchies with deep object graphs. State is stored and mutated in-place inside the object to achieve the desired functionality. This paradigm leads to a fairly convoluted design and encourage imperative style of programming. Not everyone who has designed large complex systems, think of OO the same way. For instance, people who Test Drive, do not have the luxury of a big-up-front design, instead they focus on small and incremental design. IME, TDD facilities a design that is side-effect free and encourages a declarative style of programming. While decoupling and composing objects in a functional style with the right granularity of abstraction. Let's assume we've to build a web commenting and discussion feature (like Disqus). And we've a requirement to implement this as a React component. Can we apply pure functional principles to design this? Or will the design be better if we try a classical OO JS approach? In this live demo, we'll build this component from scratch and see how TDD will help us drive an object-functional design to strike a pragmatic balance between the 2 paradigms.
