√ Interpretation Strategies | Understanding Complex Texts | English

14:14
#iitutor #English #UnderstandingComplexTexts https://www.iitutor.com Interpretation strategies are ways of thinking and analysing a text that allow you to understand complex themes and messages. It enables you to ‘read a text on multiple levels’. A literal interpretation requires nothing more than an understanding of what a piece of text is literally stating. It requires explanation. You need to explain what its purpose is. That is, it requires you to discuss why the literal representation is significant. A lateral interpretation is logical, but considers more than just the obvious. e.g. Source of Fibre, product, snack, livelihood, Projectile Weapon. A symbolic interpretation is about finding abstract or metaphorical meanings within a piece of text. You are arguing how an author has chosen to represent ideas indirectly through imagery. You must then connect the two meanings together using context and theme to support your suggestion. Stylistic features look at the construction of message: Visual and language features, Irony and Paradox, Representation, Relationship with theme and audience, Context and Post-Modernism, Significance. Interpretation can be done in many ways. It means exploring various options. Read into construction of meaning.

√ How to Analyse Texts Critically - Critical Thinking - English

21:11
#iitutor #English #CriticalThinking https://www.iitutor.com/ https://blog.gradeproof.com/need-more-inspiration-on-how-to-improve-your-writing/ Every Text Can Be Interpreted Every idea, theme and concept in a text is open for interpretation and its meaning can change. Don’t assume common knowledge, because even facts need to be proven. So, for that reason, you can choose to ignore more common analysis and come up with your own. Critical Analysis of Texts Texts can be analysed independently. There is no set consensus on how you should do it – only that you are able to justify the how and why in your argument. It requires breaking down a text and its key sections, a bit of note-taking, and for you to make clear distinctions. Construction of Story There is much to analyse in how a story is constructed. The way language and structure are used is important. It influences the meaning of the text. Think about how the form and style of an author affects how the text communicates. You should be looking for things such as: • medium • genre • style of prose/poetry • use of plot devices such as flashbacks, varied narrators and climax • formatting/editing • meaning • representation Language Visual and written language techniques are the simplest method you may use to interpret a text. You must think and analyse how and why they are used. You must constantly challenge the use of such techniques. look at how they contribute to meaning: • imagery, emotional and sensory language • metaphor • visual layout • camera and film techniques • dialogue • contrast, paradox and juxtaposition Characterisation Characterisation is an important consideration for critical analysis. By analysing how a character is portrayed, you can discuss their motives and purpose. This is not the same as describing a character. Characterisation can be indicated through description and dialogue, or through the ‘voice’ of the narrator. This is indicated through: • use of dialogue • description • character’s role (antagonist, protagonist, foil) • relationships • change in narration • language techniques and their effect on appearance Theme Theme is purely interpretive. Any theme you identify has to be justified and argued. Theme can be interpreted through a key idea or effect of a text. In other words, the theme is basically the predominant idea of what the text achieves through meaning. They can be ideas relating to: • philosophy/psychology • feelings • personal issues • political • social • cultural • religious/spiritual • life and its stages

Wie schreibt man eine Interpretation?

02:15
Also nicht verzweifeln, sondern ganz genau hinsehen. √ Interpretation in Action | Understanding Complex Texts | English

13:53
#iitutor #English #TextAndContext https://www.iitutor.com/ Interpretation in action requires you to look at a piece of text closely and consider not only interpretation strategies, but text, context and theme. This enables you to not only interpret a text effectively, but give a strong case when justifying it in a response. The style and type of text has the most influence upon interpretation. Language, Visuals, Structure, Style, Techniques, Voice, Characters, Story. Context is related to the construction and background of a text: Social, cultural, religious background. Nationality and identity of the author. Fragment vs. whole text. Narrative arc and representation. Ask: ‘does my interpretation ‘fit in’ with what the rest of the text does?’ Another consideration is ‘theme’, or the purpose and message of the text. If you ‘know’ the theme: Interpretation should match the ideology contained within that theme. If you don’t ‘know’ the theme: Interpretation should match the mood and style of representation used. 'a walk through the rain’, Sadnedd, Forgot Umbrella, Cleaning, Recklessness, Renewal, Bad Day, Bad omens, bad luck, freedon of spirit, apprehension, shroud, discomfort. Text; Visual text shows two people (M/F), look like lovers. Theme; Mood feels ‘happy’ with warm lighting and close proximity. Context; Moonlit night, modern city couple, solitary image. So? ‘Freedom of Spirit’ of two people young and in love. To interpret a text Use frame work of text, context and theme Connect them with the best meaning.

Introduction to Intertexuality and Interpretation | LITERARY THEORY #1

03:37
Introduction to Intertexuality and Interpretation | LITERARY THEORY COURSE Intertextuality is a set of relations between texts, which can include direct quotations, allusions, literary conventions, imitation, parody, and unconscious sources among others. Intertextuality also involves assumptions regarding the reader, the situation being referred to, and its context. Hi, this is Mihnea. Welcome to UpLife. This is the first video in a new series on Literary Theory in which we will discuss the concept of intertextuality in all its aspects. In traditional literary theory, it is assumed that when we read a work of literature we are trying to find a meaning which lies inside that work. Why? Because literary texts possess meaning, and readers extract it. The process of extracting meaning from texts is called interpretation. However, contemporary literary and cultural theory has radically changed such ideas. It is now believed that works of literature are built from systems, codes, and traditions established by previous works of literature. Crucial to the meaning of a work of literature are also the systems, the codes, and the traditions of other fields, such as films, music, art, and of culture in general. The act of reading rather than the interpretation of one work, engages the reader in discovering a network of textual relations. Tracing those relations is, in fact, interpreting the text, that is, discovering its meaning, or meanings. Reading thus becomes a process of ‘touring between texts.’ In “Intertextuality”, Graham Allen, an Associate Professor in Modern English at University College Cork, Ireland, writes: “Meaning becomes something which exists between a text and all the other texts to which it refers and relates, moving out from the independent text into a network of textual relations.” To sum up, in literary theory, the analysis of a work of literature involves making intertextual references, extracting meaning, being a critical reader, and interpreting a text. Now you’re ready to embark on an exciting journey in the world of literary theory and discover the intricacies of intertextuality. To get you started, I recommend you have a look at Graham Allen’s well-written and well-researched book “Intertextuality”. See the Amazon link in the description below. From Text to Interpretation: How the Bible Came to Mean Some of the Strange Things It Means

58:06
(Visit: http://www.uctv.tv/) James Kugel, director of the Institute for the History of the Jewish Bible at Bar Ilan University, argues that the Hebrew Bible was, from the beginning, the Interpreted Bible. In the third and second centuries B.C.E. -- well before the last books of the Bible were written -- groups of interpreters were puzzling over the stories of Abraham and Sarah, Jacob and Esau, and other ancient figures. Their interpretations were often fanciful, and sometimes wildly inventive, but their grasp of the very idea of the Bible is still with us and continues to influence today's readers. What is AESTHETIC INTERPRETATION? What does AESTHETIC INTERPRETATION mean?

03:56
What is AESTHETIC INTERPRETATION? What does AESTHETIC INTERPRETATION mean? AESTHETIC INTERPRETATION meaning - AESTHETIC INTERPRETATION definition - AESTHETIC INTERPRETATION explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. An interpretation in philosophy of art, is an explanation of the meaning of some work of art. An interpretation expresses an understanding of a work of art, a poem, performance, or piece of literature. Readers may approach reading a text from different starting points. A student assigned to interpret a poem for class comes at reading differently from someone on the beach reading a novel for escapist pleasure. "Interpretation" implies the conscious task of making sense out of a piece of writing that may not be clear at first glance or that may reward deeper reading even if it at first appears perfectly clear. The beach reader will probably not need to interpret what she or he reads, but the student will. Professor Louise Rosenblatt, a specialist in the study of the reading process, distinguished between reading "stances" occupying the opposite ends of a spectrum. "Aesthetic reading" differs from "efferent" in that the former describes a reader coming to the text expecting to devote attention to the words themselves, to take pleasure in their sounds, images, connotations, etc. "Efferent reading," on the other hand, describes someone "reading for knowledge, for information, or for the conclusion to an argument, or maybe for directions as to action, as in a recipe . . . , reading for what going to carry away afterwards. I term this efferent reading." That is what "efferent" means, leading or conducting away from something, in this case information from a text. On this view, poems and stories do not offer the reader a message to carry away, but a pleasure in which to participate actively—aesthetically. There are many different theories of interpretation. On the one hand, there may be innumerable interpretations for any given piece of art, any one of which may be considered valid. However, it may also be claimed that there really is only one valid interpretation for any given piece of art. The aesthetic theory that says people may approach art with different but equally valid aims is called "pluralism." But the aim of some of interpretations is such that they claim to be true or false. A "relativistic" kind of claim—between "All readings are equally good" and "Only one reading is correct"—holds that readings that tie together more details of the text and that gain approval of practiced readers are better than ones that do not. One kind of relativistic interpretation is called "formal," referring to the "form" or shape of patterns in the words of a text, especially a poem or song. Pointing to the rhymes at the ends of lines is an objective set of resemblances in a poem. A reader of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" cannot help but hear the repetition of "nevermore" as a formal element of Poe's poem. Less obvious and a bit subjective would be an interpreter's pointing to the resemblance tying together all the mentions of weariness, napping, dreaming, and the drug nepenthe. Some students of the reading process advocate that a reader should attempt to identify what the artist is trying to accomplish and interpret the art in terms of whether or not the artist has succeeded. Professor E. D. Hirsch wrote two books arguing that "the author's intention must be the ultimate determiner of meaning."E. D. Hirsch In this controversial view, there is a single correct interpretation consistent with the artists intention for any given art work.

Ancient Sumerian Cuneiform Tablets Tell Us Everything We Need to Know [FULL VIDEO]

55:33
It is fascinating to realize that it may be possible to know more about the 6,000-year-old civilization of Sumeria than we may ever know about the more recent Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. The explanation lies in the Sumerian cuneiform writing. Whereas the papyrus of other elder empires disintegrated over time or was destroyed by the fires of war, cuneiform was etched onto wet clay tablets with a stylus creating a wedge-shaped script. These tablets were then dried, baked and kept in large libraries. About 500,000 of these clay tablets have now been found and have provided modern researchers with invaluable knowledge of the Sumerians. The knowledge of Sumeria was brought to Egypt by the Biblical Patriarch Abraham by means of cleverly coded knowledge found within the Torah and other old Hebraic texts such as the Sefer Yezirah (Book of Creation) and the Sefer HaZohar (Book of Light). These books predate the Talmud, a compilation of older Jewish laws and traditions first written in the 5th century A. D. and were produced centuries before the time of Jesus. According to the Book of Light, “mysteries of wisdom” were given to Adam by God while still in the fabled Garden of Eden. These elder secrets were then passed on through Adam’s sons to Noah on to Abraham long before the Hebrews existed as a distinct people. According to the Bible, Abraham was a Sumerian originating from Ur of Chaldea, the ancient term for Iraq.
