Talk in HOPE09, NYC Modern computer chips are using transistors with features as small as 22nm. They are produced in factories that are 10,000 times cleaner than an operating room that can think like Skynet. Combined, the chips they produce run everything from your cell phone to the Internet itself. While outsiders might see it as the realm of multi-billion dollar corporations, in reality, it has been achieved through a hardcore application of the hacker mindset. Each new advancement involves hacking the theories of electrical engineering, hacking waves of light, and sometimes hacking physics. In this talk, we will go over how and why the design of a modern nanoscale transistor was developed. We will also talk about the processes used to build them, and the incredible equipment that makes it all possible. Plus some fun stories about what goes wrong.

Visit our sponsor, Brilliant: https://brilliant.org/IsaacArthur/ Science Fiction often presents us technologies that go far beyond the realms of known science, but many of these, such as force fields, inertial dampeners, anti-gravity, or faster than light travel might be possible if our future knowledge of physics holds some surprises. Today we will look at many technologies that are currently fanciful but may not be ruled out, what we call Clarketech, and consider what their implications would be if we could get them working. Indistinguishable From Magic achievement/trophy. Win a Technology victory on Deity difficulty. Step 1. Choose the Lightning Scenario. Step 2. Choose the Aztecs as your Civilization or the Greeks Step 3. Watch my video. ;) Achievement info from xbox360a's website: To achieve a technological win in the Lightning scenario, one only has to get into the modern age, (24 total techs researched). So there will be no space station launching going on. Aztecs will help you achieve this since they get +3 science per temple they have built. Or the Greeks will help you achieve this as they get more Great People. Some extra tips: Once you reach 100 gold and receive a settler, settle him into your largest city that's surrounded by water. Don't bother making a new city, it'll be a waste of time. After building the library and temple, you have to build the Courthouse. Doing this will allow you to become a high science producing city. Once you've got about 15-17 technologies researched, you should have a courthouse in every city, and all you have to do is put your production on science for each city. Also, make sure that once you have enough gold, build roads connecting your cities, and use 1 city to build some defensive units Archers or Pikemen and then ship them to other cities. Your gonna be at war with other civs...you can't stop that unless you manage to get a great person early in the game and you build the great wall, so your gonna have to build some defensive units. If you get lucky enough that they only focus on one city, then make sure that city has an army of Archers, and maybe a back up and you should be good. Do not give away technology for peace. I mean seriously? All your asking for is to lose. Keep up to date on everything I upload and play! It's easy to get bogged down in the details of electric bikes - specs and torque and watts and such. But as anyone who's ridden an electric bike can tell you, specs matter less than the magic of riding. That's why we teamed up with motor manufacturer Bosch, and German bike builders Riese & Müller to offer up a short film that conveys the magic you can uncover when you embrace the ebike. "Indistinguishable from Magic" is a short film written by music video director Mark Kohr and co-owner of The New Wheel Karen Wiener. Shot in and around Tomales Bay, California, the film includes footage from the Tomales Bay Oyster Company and the Tresch Family Farm. Note: Apologies for Arthur C. Clarke misspelling at the beginning!

"Frankly, I was astonished," recalled Arthur C. Clarke, when the noted scientist and author encountered the famous metal bender Uri Geller. "In from of my eyes, Geller apparently bent the key just by stroking it gently." Clarke also remembers that the key was so bent, he couldn't use it to unlock his door, and had to awaken the household to let him in. With this lively video, Arthur C. Clarke looks further into "Metal Bending, Magic, and Mind Over Matter." Do these people really have paranormal powers? Or are they just bending the truth? When Uri Geller captured the world's interest in 1973, he left behind a trail of bent cutlery, twisted keys and baffled scientists. But he also brought to the fore the subject known scientifically as psychokinesis or PK, and this program tracks down what we now know about this 'magical' power. Still very controversial, some studies of PK show that objects that move without any apparently contact. Are these researchers engaged in cheating, or merely child's play? After millions of dollars spent in PK laboratories, can these claims be proved? Pacific Arts Video. 1985. Arthur C. Clarke said "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." In "The Wizard of Oz", the "All powerful & great Wizard" was actually an old scientist pulling levers to create the grand illusion. And even when exposed, as the curtain was pulled away to reveal the puny old man, whilst still in control of the machinery he was operating, he had the audacity to project his fake Wizard voice and command in the full glare of the bemused Dorothy and her companions to... "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!" Even though some commentators have erroneously claimed that Ad-Dajjal is a "System" rather than a man, or that most of the Antichrist's miracles can be seemingly achieved through today's science, such as chemically seeding the clouds for rain, using hormones to increase crop and animal yields, using stem cells to create artificial meat, using low-frequency weapons to induce earthquakes, airplanes for rapid travel, instantaneous language translators for communication, satellites to detect treasure hidden underground and microwave technology to send sound signals directly into your brain; the sheer grandiosity and industrial scale on which ad-Dajjal will perform his feats will be truly beguiling and leave most people speechless and dumbfounded as if hypnotized by a magic show, and fall for his blinding agenda. For if we are no longer in awe of science in the tech-savvy modern world, then how can we relegate ad-Dajjal to being a mere trickster or puffed up scientist of the future, blinding people with his science. Yet, erudite Scholars of Islam have said that ad-Dajjal's feats are truly miraculous in nature, hence his Fitnah or Tribulation. Which is why he must be avoided at all costs. But, there are some that are yearning, and preparing for his arrival.

Did you know that the satellite industry was founded by a magician? He didn’t call himself that, but he had a magical ability to see into the future. One of the many things he saw was the satellite industry. His name was Sir Arthur C. Clarke. He is Chairman Emeritus of SSPI and a charter member of our Hall of Fame. He is also the inspiration for the next video in our Better Satellite World campaign, called “Magic.” It is about the many astounding ways that satellite – the world’s indispensable technology – will make the world a better place 15 years from now in 2030. The title not only celebrates Sir Arthur’s remarkable ability to forecast the future but one of his “laws” of science fiction: that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. We also thank the companies that made it possible for us to show you our latest video: the Intelligent Communities Group, L-3 and Microspace Communications. Learn more at www.bettersatelliteworld.com

By Seth Raphael "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." As Arthur C. Clarke alludes, magicians and scientists often play on the same borders of the unknown. Magicians, however, do not have to kowtow to the constraints of reality as technologists do. For centuries, magicians have both used cutting edge technology and developed it in their search to present a compelling vision of what life might be like. Magicians mastered electricity before their audiences had heard of it, helped invent cinema, and created a chess-playing machine to rival Deep Blue centuries before IBM existed. If technology is man's search to express control over his environment, scientists should look to magicians for inspiration and guidance as to what has engaged people for millennia. As science rapidly progresses, it becomes more difficult for the magician to compete with technology and stay abreast of new developments. Indeed, the perception that "anything is possible with technology" has made it harder on some levels for magicians to sell their acts. Yet, they continue to be successful by adapting their techniques and presentations in order to affect people profoundly. Seth Raphael will present a brief overview of magicians' historical use of, and involvement with, new technology. He will explain how, as technology rapidly approaches what was hitherto the domain of magic, designers can use the techniques of magicians to improve their technology, and will reveal the current adaptations of novel technology for use in the field of magic.

"If, as Arthur C Clarke famously observed, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, then can we accept that any sufficiently advanced magic is also indistinguishable from technology?" In this illustrated presentation, Mark Pilkington presents a historical overview of psychotronic devices - the radiant collision point of witchcraft, art and technology. Psychotronic devices fuse aspects of vitalism, electromagnetic field theory and psychic sciences like telepathy, psychometry and dowsing. From an orthodox materialist perspective they are cargo cult technology, a fantasy of science. But it is too simple to reject all psionic devices out of hand as deceptions or slight-of-mind; Instead, we can perhaps best understand them as technological adaptations of ancient, sympathetic magical practices, a magic that feeds on, and is fuelled by, the conviction of both the practitioner and the subject. Mark will look the development of psychotronic technologies from the 19th century to the present, a journey that incorporates experimental medicines, science fiction fandom and some of the world's most prestigious art galleries.
