Allen Stefanek said in a statement that paying the ransom was the "quickest and most efficient way" of regaining access to the affected systems, which were crippled on Feb. 5 and interfered with hospital staff's ability to communicate electronically. Stefanek said there was no evidence that any patient or employee information was accessed in the so-called malware attack, and that the hospital fully restored access to its electronic medical record system this Monday. *** Download audio and video of the full two hour show on-demand + the members-only post game show by becoming a member at http://www.tytnetwork.com/join/. $17,000 Ransom Paid In Bitcoins By Los Angeles Hospital

00:55
In order to regain control of their computer systems, Allen Stefanek, the president of Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, said that his hospital paid hackers a ransom of $17,000 in bitcoins on Wednesday. In a statement, Stefanek stated that paying the ransom was the "quickest and most efficient way" to regain access to the systems. The systems were compromised on February 5th and the origin of the computer network intrusion remains unknown. The hack made it nearly impossible for communication among hospital staff, who were forced to use paper records with often illegible, messy handwriting. The Los Angeles Police Department is working with the FBI to determine who is responsible for this hack. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/svMNPetSDg4/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

California Hospital Admits It Paid Ransom To Hackers

00:48
While it wasn't the first hacked organization to give in to attackers' demands, the California hospital that paid $17,000 in ransom to hackers to regain control of its computer system was unusual in one notable way: It went public with the news. Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center's President Allen Stefanek said the hospital relented to the demands because he believed it was the "quickest and most efficient way" to free the Los Angeles hospital's network. The computer system had been paralyzed for about 10 days. That announcement sparked fears Thursday among hospitals and security experts that it would embolden hackers to launch more "ransomware" attacks. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/aiNWw7--UJ8/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Hollywood hospital hit by ransomware attack, hackers demand $3 6Million

02:43
Hollywood hospital hit by ransomware attack, hackers demand $3.6Million. Ransomware is always going to present a major headache for any victim, but when a hospital is at the center of an attack, the matter suddenly appears more threatening, with the stakes potentially a whole lot higher. Take the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles. Its computer systems have been offline for more than a week following a ransomware attack, with hackers reportedly demanding a $3.6 million payment to restore access, CSO reported Monday. Staff are understandably having a hard time coping, with procedures such as CT scans unable to be carried out. In some cases, patients are being ferried to nearby medical facilities for treatment. The ongoing incident also means hospital workers are unable to gain access to important documents, patient data, and emails. Instead, staff have had to step back in time, firing up fax machines and making more use of pens and paper to keep track of work at the facility. Related: Ransomware is the new hot threat everyone is talking about; what do you need to know? The hospital has confirmed the attack, and says that so far it has no evidence to suggest patients' medical records have been accessed by the hackers, the BBC reported. The FBI and LAPD are now examining the incident, but with the ransom unpaid and the investigation ongoing, those working at the facility have been told to keep off their computers until further notice. The hospital hasn't said publicly how it's dealing with the situation, or revealed what kind of data backup systems it has in place.

Surgeons, hospital leaders, and trustees tour the newly built Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Surgical Suite at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. The Suite consists of four operating rooms housing futuristic surgical, endoscopic and imaging technology including the Artis zeego angiography C-arm system developed by Siemens Healthcare and recently approved for use in the United States. The C-arm can rotate completely around an operating table scanning a patient from all angles, and offering surgeons detailed imaging to guide them in their procedure. The Suite was established through a gift from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.
