Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center’s data is being held hostage by a team of hackers demanding $3.4 million. The hospital has been offline for more than a week after the ransomware attack. The hackers will provide the codes to unlock the stolen information once the ransom is paid. The medical center is claiming that day-to-day operations have not been affected and that patients’ medical records have not been accessed by hackers. The FBI is currently conducting an investigation into the hack. A Los Angeles hospital paid a $17,000 ransom in bitcoin to hacker who took over its electronic system. This is Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and apparently they didn’t have access to electronic communications to one another. Allen Stefanek said in a statement at paying the ransom was the quickest and most efficient way of regaining access to affected systems. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian hosts of The Young Turks discuss. Would you have paid the ransom? Let us know in the comments below. Read more here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/hospital-pays-hackers-ransom_us_56c59e78e4b0b40245c921ad The president of Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center said on Wednesday that his hospital paid hackers a ransom of $17,000 in bitcoins to regain control of their computer systems after a cyber attack. Allen Stefanek said in a statement that paying the ransom was the "quickest and most efficient way" of regaining access to the affected systems, which were crippled on Feb. 5 and interfered with hospital staff's ability to communicate electronically. Stefanek said there was no evidence that any patient or employee information was accessed in the so-called malware attack, and that the hospital fully restored access to its electronic medical record system this Monday. *** Download audio and video of the full two hour show on-demand + the members-only post game show by becoming a member at http://www.tytnetwork.com/join/. While it wasn't the first hacked organization to give in to attackers' demands, the California hospital that paid $17,000 in ransom to hackers to regain control of its computer system was unusual in one notable way: It went public with the news. Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center's President Allen Stefanek said the hospital relented to the demands because he believed it was the "quickest and most efficient way" to free the Los Angeles hospital's network. The computer system had been paralyzed for about 10 days. That announcement sparked fears Thursday among hospitals and security experts that it would embolden hackers to launch more "ransomware" attacks. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/aiNWw7--UJ8/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

In order to regain control of their computer systems, Allen Stefanek, the president of Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, said that his hospital paid hackers a ransom of $17,000 in bitcoins on Wednesday. In a statement, Stefanek stated that paying the ransom was the "quickest and most efficient way" to regain access to the systems. The systems were compromised on February 5th and the origin of the computer network intrusion remains unknown. The hack made it nearly impossible for communication among hospital staff, who were forced to use paper records with often illegible, messy handwriting. The Los Angeles Police Department is working with the FBI to determine who is responsible for this hack. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/svMNPetSDg4/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
