I want to show you the prep, the poses and the lighting that go into shooting one of those classic fitness magazine covers that you see in the supermarket checkout line. White background, clean, crisp commercial lighting, three quarter length pose, really fit and sexy subject who looks really happy. Now do you know what I am talking about? Fitness photography is actually pretty easy to do with the right gear and planning. So let’s talk first about why you would do it or should you do it the next time you are working with a model on his or her portfolio. If you are a photographer that works with models this type of fitness shot can serve several purposes in a modeling portfolio. 1. It looks like a tearsheet. I am not suggesting you ad a title and words and make a pretend fitness magazine cover. Please don’t be that photographer. I am simply pointing out the psychology - since the photo looks like one of those shots you see on the magazines - it has a subliminal effect of making the model look experienced. We are not saying that he or she was actually on a cover. 2. This shot is a great body shot for the models book. Contrary to what Tyra Banks and Janice Dickinson claimed in their reality TV shows - a model doesn’t have to pose nude. In fact a model doesn’t have to pose in lingerie or even a swimsuit if that makes them uncomfortable. From a business perspective it is an economy of scale - the more things the model is comfortable with - then the more opportunities that may exist. All that said, if you are working with a model that is uncomfortable being photographed in swimwear or lingerie - the fitness shot is a great way to be able to show off body proportions without showing too much skin. 3. It's a great way to show that the model really is in great shape. Action fitness poses are often not the most flattering. Even though this type of shot is very commercial and even kind of cheesy - it provides a modeling agency and potential client with a LOT of valuable information about the model. At this point, Cass set her sights on building a figure similar to her fitness icon’s body – at the age of 23, she began training in the gym. Through hard work, determination, and the help of her fitness-obsessed boyfriend, Cass made serious progress to her figure. After venturing into the world of bodybuilding, it wasn’t long until Cass had become aware of the legends of the sport. She saw a video of Ronnie Coleman lifting weights and was inspired by the brute force of the Mr. Olympia legend. Becoming fascinated by Ronnie’s strength and charisma – she knew that she wanted to increase her lifts. It was at this point, when Cass began training with heavier weights to achieve her new goal. A couple of months later, Cass’ fascination for bodybuilding had peaked – she’d fallen in love with working out. She began following the journey of fitness athletes on social media in her spare time – Cass was motivated by the intense training sessions of other fitness models, and how they managed to retain their femininity during their workouts. She began to idolize female athletes such as Dana Linn Bailey – respecting how Dana presented herself, not needing to expose herself sexually, but purely through her training in the gym and work ethic. For the next year, Cass continued to develop her physique. After realizing her goal of building a powerful figure, it wasn’t long until she was recognized for her aesthetics. At the start of 2016, Cass created an Instagram profile, aiming to spread her passion for fitness with others. However, she didn’t expect to receive such a reception; almost immediately, she started to attract fans, with many fascinated by how she was able to stay feminine while being muscular and strong. By the end of 2016, Cass had gained masses of online followers. As a result, she’s become arguably the biggest female fitness sensation in the modern era. Due to her passion for bodybuilding, Cass is now admired on bodybuilding forums all over the internet. I’m 1 week into my 8 week cut for the summer. I lost 3.2lbs and .25 inches on my waist. It’s a tiny change but you can still see it my side by side pics. I missed one day at the gym so I worked out for 5 days and I still suck at cardio so I did two sessions. 15 min HIIT and 30 min HIIT on Stairmaster. If you want to learn to manage your breath well when you sing, you first must have some breath to manage! In this video I discuss the anatomy and coordination involved in inhalation and how to make this component of breathing for singing more efficient. HOW TO DO THE EXERCISES IN THIS VIDEO Self-myofascial Release for the Upper Back & Shoulders Sit on a mat with a foam roller behind your hips. Bring your knees up and place your feet flat on the floor. Lie back on the foam roller, positioning your lower ribs on top of it. Using your hands to support your head and neck, lean back and raise your hips off the floor so that most of your weight is on the roller. Slowly walk your feet forward so that the roller moves from your lower ribs up toward your neck, allowing your head and shoulders to descend toward the floor. Continue until you feel the roller at the top of your shoulders, then reverse direc- tion until the roller is once again at your lower ribs. If you find a point of particular tenderness or tightness along your back or shoulders, pause in that position and continue breathing until the sensation subsides. Stability Ball Stretches for the Rib Cage To stretch the back of the rib cage, kneel in front of the stability ball. Place your chest on top of the ball and roll forward so that your torso is draped over the ball, with your fingertips and toes on the floor. Take a few deep, slow breaths, expanding your ribs as far as possible in the back. To stretch the front of the rib cage, sit on a stability ball and walk yourself forward until your torso drapes backward over the ball. Take a moment to get your balance; then take a few deep, slow breaths, expanding your ribs all the way up to your collarbone. Born in Queens and raised in New Jersey, she began her musical studies as a clarinetist. Her passion was fueled by her early experiences playing in the Young Artists Orchestra at Tanglewood under the batons of Seiji Ozawa and Leonard Bernstein. This led to private studies with Richard Stoltzman, a Master’s degree in Clarinet from Peabody Conservatory, and a brief stint as the principal clarinetist of Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de México. Shortly after completing her undergraduate studies at Bennington College, she was encouraged to study singing by conductor Blanche Honegger Moyse. She sang while continuing to play her instrument, earning a Master’s degree in Voice at Peabody simultaneously with her clarinet degree. Eventually, her fascination with the physiological process of singing eclipsed her passion for clarinet. In 1995, she began doctoral studies in vocal performance and pedagogy at McGill University, which she completed in 1999. In 2002, Dr. Friedlander moved to New York City, apprenticed herself to renowned pedagogue W. Stephen Smith, and established her voice studio. In her first few years of teaching, frustration with her inability to address the mechanical dysfunction some of her students possessed in a methodical and rigorous way motivated her to study kinesiology. After receiving her certification as a personal trainer from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, she became inspired to apply the concept of sport-specific training to the professional voice. Dr. Friedlander has presented workshops on vocal fitness for The Voice Foundation and the Performing Arts Medicine Association, and was an invited panel discussant on health and wellness for OPERA America. Her students have performed on Broadway, and at leading opera houses including The Santa Fe Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. Her first book, Complete Vocal Fitness: A Singer’s Guide to Physical Training, Fitness and Anatomy, was published by Rowman & Littlefield in June 2018. She is the author of the monthly column “Musings on Mechanics” for Classical Singer Magazine as well as a widely read and cited blog on vocal technique and fitness, The Liberated Voice. In 2008, she joined the faculty of the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall, where she developed, in collaboration with Joyce DiDonato, The Singer’s Audition Handbook, an interactive online career development guide for young singers that will be published in book form in 2019.
