Hugh Laurie reads Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift - Audiobook

05:33:39
Shipwrecked and cast adrift, Lemuel Gulliver wakes to find himself on Lilliput, an island inhabited by little people, whose height makes their quarrels over fashion and fame seem ridiculous. His subsequent encounters - with the crude giants of Brobdingnag, the philosophical Houyhnhnms and the brutish Yahoos - give Gulliver new, bitter insights into human behaviour. Swift's savage satire view mankind in a distorted hall of mirrors as a diminished, magnified and finally bestial species, presenting us with an uncompromising reflection of ourselves. 1:23:45 -Part 2 2:44:00 -Part3 4:09:51 -Part 4 Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7733.Gulliver_s_Travels

Gulliver's Travels Ladybird Children's Classics

Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift retold by Marie Stuart Illustrated by Martin Aitchison Ladybird books loughborough 1986 *DISCLAIMER* I converted this audio cassette to a digital file and I tried my best to capture the audio as clean as i could. I then scanned the pages from the book so as the viewer could read along and also see the beautiful illustrations. I have owned these books and cassettes since i was a small child of 4 or 5 years old. My father would bring them home from time to time much to my delight and i cannot express how much i adored them. I would play them for hours, becoming totally immersed with the amazing sound effects, music, illustrations and narration. I would even listen to them from time to time in my older years but alas my cassette player died and i packed them all in a box and forgot about them for more than 20 years. Recently i saw a new model retro cassette player. I bought it to relive these classics and upon doing so was struck with the notion to upload them so people could relive their childhoods and so that new younger generations could be introduced to such amazing works, who knows it may help spark the imagination of some amazing authors. By not playing with these cassettes too much over the years they for the most part play fine. I have started this new project with nothing but the best intentions. I ONLY want these amazing stories and illustrations to live on and i DO NOT want to receive any kind of ad revenue for doing this project. The rights belong to the amazing people who helped create these wonderful stories. I only wish to share them at the best possible quality i can. If i find a way to upload better quality versions in the near future then i will do so. Thank you to everybody who appreciates these amazing books and cassettes and i hope for those of you who have listened before a wonderful journey back to where it all began and to those who are only discovering these stories now i say Welcome.

Gulliver's Travels | CBSE Class 9 English

16:33
Gulliver's Travels | CBSE Class 9 English Here we are going to study the topic of class 9 English as, Gulliver Travels. In this first chapter, Swift establishes Gulliver's character. He does this primarily by the vast amount of details that he tells us about Gulliver. Clearly, Gulliver is of good and solid but unimaginative English stock. Gulliver was born in Nottinghamshire, a sedate county without eccentricity. He attended Emmanuel College, a respected, but not dazzling, college. The neighborhoods that Gulliver lived in Old Jury, Fetter Lane, and Wapping are all lower-middle-class sections. He is, in short, Mr. British middle class of his time. Gulliver is also, as might be expected, ""gullible."" He believes what he is told. He is an honest man, and he expects others to be honest. This expectation makes for humor — and also for irony. We can be sure that what Gulliver tells us will be accurate. And we can also be fairly sure that Gulliver does not always understand the meaning of what he sees. The result is a series of astonishingly detailed, dead-pan scenes. For example, Gulliver gradually discovers, moving from one exact detail to another, that he is a prisoner of men six inches tall. Concerning the political application of this chapter, note that Gulliver is confined in a building that was emptied because a notorious murder was committed there. The building probably represents Westminster Hall, where Charles I was tried and sentenced to death. Narrated in first person, Swift successfully portrays Gulliver’s thoughts and reactions as he faces struggles of integration throughout his travels. Beginning with the introduction of Gulliver, an educated ship’s surgeon, who after a series of unfortunate events is victim to repeated shipwrecks, desertions, and set adrift. His first of several misadventures sees him washed up on the shores of Lilliput, home to the less than six inches tall Lilliputians, where he wakes up to the sounds of scurrying beneath him. However, roles are reversed when his misfortunes lead him to Brobdingnag, a land occupied by giants where he must experience life as an inferior and fragile being. Subsequently, he comes across a society of oppressive theoreticians, and finally an intellectual, superior race. Divided between the known and the unknown, Gulliver must put aside his prejudgments and experience the unfamiliar societies first hand. As the novel gradually progresses, the transformation of the narrator becomes evident as he draws conclusions from each and every one of his adventures. Written by the master of satire, Jonathan Swift has not only created a story of adventure, but also cunningly attacks the mere nature of society in between its lines. Abuse of power, criticism of human nature, politics, and individualism are just some of the themes explored during the enlightening journeys of the venturesome Gulliver. Swift’s witty use of metaphors and satirical style serves as a puzzle waiting to be solved. An adventure story for the young, but a critical piece for the mature, the novel has a bit of everything and appeals to all age groups. The details in which the locations are described, the escapism it offers, and its openness to interpretation is what makes Gulliver’s Travels a timeless piece of literature

Don't miss the opportunity to listen to the full audiobook Gulliver's Travels, free at our library. Travelers visit many strange places. They see very many wonderful things. When they return home they tell wonderful stories about what they have seen. Thus begin the words of Jonathan Swifts immortal Lemuel Gulliver in his witty masterpiece, Gullivers Travels. Retold for the modern young reader while retaining all of the tongue-in-cheek charm and political satire of the original classic, the adventures of the keenly observant Gulliver in Lilliput and Brobdingnag are certain to enchant a whole new generation of listeners.
