I tested the accuracy and reliability using and comparing several different tools to know which can be trusted. This was done for my own reasoning, but mainly for aviation purposes. I was very surprised and impressed with the results and also found something out about google earth that is pretty amazing. GPS can be very accurate and requires no calibration, but is not always accurate and at times can be very inaccurate depending on many circumstances and variables. Baro-Altimeter devices such as a watch or smartphone apps that use the built-in barometer can be inaccurate if not calibrated, but the change in altitude from a start point is always reliable and accurate even if the readout is not accurate to actual height above sea level. If using a device that utilizes a barometer to tell altitude (like the watch), you need to understand that barometric pressure can change by the minute and can greatly effect the altitude readout even though it hasn't physically moved up or down. However, in most cases it changes slowly unless a weather front moves over your location. Also, you cannot use an altimeter watch to tell your altitude if flying in a pressurized plane (commercial airline). The cabin is pressurized and will not allow the watch altimeter to work properly. Measuring Sea levels and tides using an ultra low cost Python driven logging system Paul Bell Monday 17th, 10:30 (Assembly Room) A talk (25 minutes) A recent Natural Environment Research Council funded proof of concept award to the UK's National Oceanography Centre successfully demonstrated that Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals reflected off the sea surface and received by very low cost (~£30) GPS receivers can be used to estimate the difference in height between the GPS receiver and the water. This represents a method of remotely sensing tidal elevations and, if averaged over time, mean sea level. These could be routinely and remotely measured at a cost that would allow unprecedented numbers of systems to be deployed around the world by research departments of all sizes and levels of funding. A second follow-on project is currently underway to develop the concept further and produce a working prototype system using a Raspberry Pi as the data logger and potentially also to conduct the real-time processing required to extract the sea level signals. This talk will describe the background to this concept of using GPS signals for this purpose, and the early results from our test site in Sligo Bay in the Republic of Ireland. Here are some common reasons why you might have "flat" or incomplete data: Your GPS device does not log altitude, or you had poor satellite reception when you recorded the track. Your GPS device does log altitude, but it's not very accurate. You drew a track using the drawing tools in Google Earth or a similar application, like GPS Visualizer's Sandbox. You have a KML file that came from Google Maps or Google Earth's "driving directions" feature. You created a route in Google Maps and have the URL of that route. You have an NMEA log file that contains only "GPRMC" sentences, not "GPGGA."

From the main view press menu. Then long press page repeatedly till the telemetry screen is displayed. Scroll down to discover sensors and press enter. The GPS coordinates, altitude, speed and date appear in the list of telemetry sensors. Press enter to stop discovery. Make sure the GPS sensor is facing the correct way up. Wait a few minutes for it to start sending telemetry. By default the altitude displayed is above sea level. To get the altitude above ground the auto offset option needs to be used. Select the GPS Altitude sensor. Press enter. Scroll down to auto offset and press enter. Press exit. Now add the altitude to a telemetry view screen. This is done on the display screen. Now the distance calculated and displayed will account for the altitude as well. If the aircraft has moved 3 meters horizontally and 4 meters vertically the distance calculated will be 5 meters. On the bottom left of the log file viewer window there will be a picture of the earth viewed from space. NASA scientists and ice sheet modelers, Ryan Walker and Christine Dow, traveled to a remote location on the coast of Antarctic to investigate how tides affect the movement and stability of the Nansen Ice Shelf, a 695-mile extension of ice protruding into Antarctica’s Ross Sea. Relatively understudied, Nansen’s manageable size lends itself to becoming a proxy for predicting how larger ice shelves will contribute to sea level rise in the decades and centuries to come. By studying the impact of tides, Walker and Dow are able to determine how the rise and fall of floating ice sheets may impact the likelihood of an eventual ice shelf collapse. Altimetric satellites are able to measure sea level and can observe how it has been changing with climate change since 1992. Not only can they tell us the global change but also the regional changes. Sea level changes are due to thermal expansion of water, melting of the polar ice caps and continental glaciers and water inputs from land. Tide gauges are able to tell us that sea level rose at a slower rate before the 1990s and then the global sea level trend increased after that. This is likely due to the increase of greenhouse gasses and climate change. The continued observation of sea level by altimetric satellites will be able to inform us what the future of sea level is. The plane launched at a starting point of 643ft (ASL - above sea level) and climbed an additional 9010m or 29,560ft (AGL - above ground level) at 35:38 in the video. So, the total (ASL - above sea level) height is: 643ft + 29,560ft = 30,203ft. Since Mount Everest is 29,029ft (ASL - above sea level), the plane flew 1,174ft higher than the Earth's highest (ASL - above sea level) mountain in the world. The temp. reading shown in the OSD (upper left corner) is an internal ambient temp gauge inside the foam insulated plane and within the GPS/MAG sensor. Catalina Island and the Trans Catalina Trail are used as an example to demonstrate the accuracy of low cost and affordable GPS units in relation to elevation above sea level. The goal is to determine how reliable low cost GPS units are for those that are unable to transport large GPS units in the field. The data points collected for this research were acquired on a 4 day, 45 mile backpacking trip across Catalina Island in March 2018. By collecting points at an established benchmark, the portable GPS turns out to be less reliable than expected. I was playing with the GoPro Karma grip filming wing-suits over Perris California yesterday and decided to see how the GPS data works using the Quik app :) It's really cool seeing how fast we fly and how quickly we loose altitude. The reason it doesn't say zero when I land is because where I am landing is over 1000ft above sea level :) The wind was being very difficult with us yesterday and I wasn't able to make it back to the DZ landing area so you will hear me get a little frustrated and say few bad words. Sorry about that ;)

The tall tower (GPS: 30°17'37.59"N, 90°18'38.64”W) is listed in FAA Obstacle data under the reference number ORS# 22-001038 which provides the height of the tower at 210ft (above ground level) and 211ft (above mean sea level). The tower is ~15.9 miles from the observer. A rough, but pretty good estimate of the observer height is around 30-50ft. Given this information we'd expect to see 170 - 190ft of the tower above the horizon, which is consistent with these observations. Based on the shadows of the short towers compared to the shadows of the tall tower in google earth the short towers appears to be roughly 75ft tall. Google Earth titles do not always line up correctly. Use the history feature to see that the align of a specific pylon changes based on the camera angle. Driving past the pylons makes it clear that they are for all intents and purposes directly in line.
