The future of fashion | The Economist

02:24
The fashion industry is on the verge of a tech revolution. Clothes of tomorrow could be designed, fitted and sold to us by technology alone. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: https://econ.st/2xvTKdy From Gucci to Chanel, Topshop to Primark - Clothes industry heavyweights rely on fashion forecasters for next season's new look. But advancements in artificial intelligence are about to turn their art into a science. Cognitive computing is now able to identify patterns previously inaccessible to humans. It can simultaneously analyse vast amounts of global data - from social media buzz to political polls - making it possible to accurately spot what's hot and what's not. WGSN, the world's biggest fashion forecaster. now uses AI alongside more traditional methods. A move that could reduce forecasting errors by up to 50%. Trend-spotting mistakes can have far-reaching consequences. H&M recently confessed to a $4.3 billion unsold stock mountain. Industry waste costs both profits and reputation. Technology could make the fashion industry more sustainable. By using machine learning, an AI technique, to match supply with demand unnecessary manufacturing could be limited and fashions environmental footprint reduced. Online retailers are cottoning on. In the next two years 75% of fashion retailers plan to invest in AI. But keeping up with tech giants is going to be tough. Amazon is now developing what's believed to be the world's first AI fashion designer. It plans to use an algorithm that designs clothes by analyzing images and copying popular styles - using them to build completely new designs. This technological makeover could hold huge benefits especially for those who like to shop online. A Japanese company has unveiled the Zozo, a body measurement suit that will ensure the clothes you order fits you perfectly. All meaning our future wardrobes could contain clothes designed for us and sold to us by technology alone. Where the future of fashion is headed - VPRO documentary

50:15
What is the future of fashion and where is the fashion industry heading to? What kind of future do fashion pioneers think of and how do they try to change the way of thinking about fashion? A documentary about the future and a new way of approach to fashion. Every year more than 100 billion new garments are produced. A third of that is never sold, worn and shredded or burned. In the global race for the fastest production at the lowest prices, the fashion and clothing industry has developed into a dazzling Fast Fashion system. That system is not only based on exploitation, but also responsible for 10% of global CO2 emissions. How can we change fashion and still enjoy it? Backlight shows five future fashion pioneers who make their industry future-proof by experimenting with new fabrics, reuse and hi-tech design. Their 'fashion of the future' goes far beyond sustainability alone. They also force us to look differently at beauty and the role that clothing plays in our lives. During the Fashion Week in London, the British duo Vin + Omi presents a haute couture collection made with fabrics based on plants and plastic bottles. The Amsterdam label Hacked By is experimenting with the reuse of clothing surpluses, in collaboration with the large fashion chains that produce these surpluses. And the Flemish designer Jasna Rokegem presents the possibility of clothing, which is made every morning by a 3D printer. Or will we all in the future wear that one ultimate piece of clothing that changes with our moods, protects us against bacteria, repairs itself and never needs to be washed? Almost weekly the fast fashion carousel spits out new collections. The production time between the catwalks in Paris, London and Milan and the clothes racks of the big chains such as H & M and Zara is shorter than ever. Fashion has become affordable and accessible to everyone, but we buy too much and the clothing industry pollutes the planet. The surpluses of returned and unsold garments are accumulating. Even African countries do not want the discarded new clothing anymore, because it disrupts internal production. Every second a truck full of new textiles is burnt somewhere. Getting out of this vicious cycle turns out to be difficult for consumers, designers and producers, and still – a difference can be made. Original title: Future fashion With: Vin + Omi (fashion designers), Orsola de Castro (founder Fashion Revolution), Jasna Rokegem (digital designer, inventor and founder Jasna Rok), Otto von Busch (author, teacher at Parsons School of Design, New York) and Francisco van Benthum & Alexander van Slobbe (fashion designers and founders Hacked By). #Techstyle: 3D Printing, Customization, and the Future of Fashion

03:16
"We are in an extremely individualistic age of fashion," explains Michelle Finamore, curator of Fashion Arts at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts and co-curator of the current exhibit, #Techstyle. The exhibit showcases and celebrates the fusion of contemporary fashion and technology, a relationship Finamore believes will produce an explosion of personal expression through customization. Subscribe to Reason TV for daily content like this: http://bit.ly/1Ocr2AL She points to the rise of digital printing as a prime example of fashion's move towards personalization. "There are already a number of websites [where you can] chose the images that you want to wear on your body. That is quite amazing. If you look at our Cute Circuit dress that is embedded with micro-LEDs, you can chose the imagery that is going to appear on your garment. So there is this incredible freedom of expression, this amazing creativity that you are going to be able to achieve in the future." Featuring revolutionary fabrics, coats that charge your cellphone, and custom-fitted 3D-printed dresses, #Techstyles previews a world transformed through cutting-edge technology. It runs through July 11, 2016. Produced by Meredith Bragg. About 3 minutes. The future of fashion: Pulp-It

04:15
Scientists and designers in Sweden and Britain have created a wearable ‘paper’. The inexpensive 21st-century fabric has an intentionally short lifespan, and can be recycled or industrially composted. Made from unbleached wood pulp and other bio-based materials, the non-woven paper is finished using natural dyes, laser surfacing, and efficient ultrasonic construction. Energy and chemicals are reduced at every stage. With automated production, consumers could customise each garment’s colour, pattern and shape. Acknowledging that disposable fashion forms part of most wardrobes, this new material offers a more sustainable approach to fast fashion. vam.ac.uk/FashionedfromNature #FashionedfromNature

The high-tech future of fashion

08:05
Almost every piece of clothing you own was made, in some part, by a person. Clothing manufacturing still lags years behind industries like cars and electronics in automation of labor, but new technologies like lasers and 3D knitting could radically transform how garment factories operate around the world, finally bringing the fashion industry to the tech future. Quartz fashion reporter Marc Bain explores how the notoriously low-tech apparel industry is now on the cusp of a new era of customizable, mass-produced fashion. -- Quartz is a digital news outlet dedicated to telling stories at the intersection of the important and the interesting. Predictions - Future fashion & wearable technology (ISCF - Clean Growth)

03:52
This Future Fashion film uses examples of what currently exists in fashion tech to illustrate how the seemingly impossible is already being achieved, and what this means for the future. From a current invention – a cloak that changes colour and pattern in response to the weather, to a cloak that in twenty to thirty years’ time could make us invisible! Presenter Emily Honeywell, from Innovate UK’s IC tomorrow programme, expands on this theme: “to look 20 years into the future, it is hardly possible to think what our 'wearables' will be like. We are now at the point where technology is moving at such a speed that it's capacity to enhance human capabilities and create magical design almost outruns our imagination!” Welcome to the future of wearable tech! Technology outrunning our imagination? So where do we go from here? It appears that we are now at the point technological progression is at such a speed that its capacity to enhance our human capabilities almost outruns our imagination around applications. No matter how outrageous we are in our visions for the future, we are at a very exciting time now where the gap between tech and our imaginations has significantly narrowed. We are now at the point we are beginning to make our wildest wearable dreams come true. The Future of Fashion Design in China

In the past 30 years, China has been a major garment manufacturer, producing clothes for big brands overseas for very low margins. Now in China, the clothing industry is experiencing a transformation. “Made in China” is gradually being upgraded to “Designed in China.” For modern-day Chinese designers, this presents an opportunity as well as a challenge. How data is driving the future of fashion | Steve Brown | TED Institute

09:47
The fashion industry is on the brink of a revolution. Today, designers have the latest trends at their fingertips with data gathered from Instagram feeds, runway shows and even changing rooms. But if the future of fashion design is dedicated to data does that mean the death of true creativity? Fashion buyer Steve Brown argues for the opposite: that with more efficient production cycles, designers are free to focus on what they love. About the TED Institute: We know that innovative ideas and fresh approaches to challenging problems can be discovered inside visionary companies around the world. The TED Institute helps surface and share these insights. Every year, TED works with a group of select companies and foundations to identify internal ideators, inventors, connectors, and creators. Drawing on the same rigorous regimen that has prepared speakers for the TED main stage, TED Institute works closely with each partner, overseeing curation and providing intensive one-on-one talk development to sharpen and fine tune ideas. The Future of Fashion is Now - Lucia Cuba

03:32
Fashion designer Lucia Cuba (Peru) is one of the six winners of the Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge Award. A jury of experts, including the fashion-duo Viktor&Rolf and Karin Swerink, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, have awarded the prize to six young fashion designers. They are each creating a new work on the cusp between fashion and art. These new works will be on show for the first time in the exhibition ‘The Future of Fashion is Now’, autumn 2014 in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Lucia Cuba is both fashion designer and social scientist. With 'Exercises on Health', she aims to demonstrate that we can use fashion to interpret and transform our social reality. The garments bear the stories of people's battles with cancer. Health is intangible and is hidden in a person's spirit or body. Cuba attempts to provide an insight into how people experience sickness and health. The garments are actually materialised experiences. "Part 1 of 'Exercises on Health' - the first stage of a larger and ongoing project - is the consequence of a design process involving fieldwork conducted in Peru, interviews, audiovisual documentation, discourse and garment-based analysis. The result is an installation involving four garments: a set of devices interrelated through form, function and experience, shedding light on the complex universe of affections and significations that is revealed by concerns with health and the body." Lucia Cuba's work can be seen at the exhibition: The Future of Fashion is Now Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen until January 15, 2015 Credits A film by: Kuba Szutkowski en René Hazekamp Concept: Rianne Schoonderbeek Camera assistent: Gino Ragueb Subtitling: Einion Media

What is the future of fashion and can it be sustainable? I Hubbub Investigates

18:41
Fashion is one of the most polluting industries on earth and to become sustainable the entire industry has to undergo a seismic shift. This week we meet the designers and disruptors who are looking to change the future of fashion. ___________________________________________________________ Sustainable Fashion was searched more times on google than ever before last year and the fashion community is coming under ever greater pressure to make changes to the way the entire industry operates; which in the last two decades has been a race to the bottom, producing a new collection every week and making fast and cheap the priority. Fashion has a big environmental footprint using lots of water, chemicals and carbon to get garments to shops. There are some incredible brands and activists who are working to change the industry for the better from using cutting edge fabrics in their design to encouraging shoppers to repair, remake and rewear their clothes. IN THIS VIDEO WE MEET: Mary Creagh MP, the Chair of the governmental environmental audit committee for sustainable fashion who have just bought out their recommendations for government, businesses and individuals on reducing the environmental impact of fashion. You can read their full report here:https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201719/cmselect/cmenvaud/1952/1952.pdf Zoe Patridge is the founder of Wear the Walk a rental fashion company which lets customers rent designer outfits on a subscription service or for a one off fee. Rental services like this are aiming to reduce the amount of clothes we buy and throw in the bin, like a ‘Netflix for your wardrobe’: https://www.wearthewalk.co.uk Riona Treacy, is a designer who just had her first collection and London Fashion Week. All of her clothes are handmade in the UK and all the fabrics are sources in the UK and Ireland: https://rionatreacy.com/pages/about Wondering what we can do to reduce the impact of our clothes? CHOOSE CLOTHES YOU LOVE THAT WILL LAST If you are able to save up to invest in pieces that you really love and are going to be able to wear for years rather than just a season. DO YOUR RESEARCH Before you buy something do some digging around, become a fashion detective and see if you can find out who made your clothes, how they were made and what they are made from. REPAIR Repair is a radical act says Rose Marcario CEO of Patagonia and we agree with her, repairing something that you might normally replace is to become and owner rather than a consumer and a great way of making the clothes you love last longer. REUSE Pass the wardrobe gems that don't do it for you anymore onto pals or to charity shops and buy second hand where you can making use of the amazing fashion that already exists on the planet. The Future of Fashion is Now: Iris van Herpen (EN)

03:44
Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen creates refined, futuristic collections with a combination of delicate handwork, digital technologies and innovative materials. She uses 3D-printed and interactive clothing to explore the possibilities that new technologies offer in terms of form and movement. For this exhibition she has created an installation in which a 3D-printed dress gradually forms with the aid of a magnetic liquid - ferrofluid - that drips onto the waistline of the dress. 'The waist of the 3D-printed dress has a structure of open lines, into which I allow ferrofluid to drip from above. Magnets ensure that the ferro doesn't drip into the bath, but remains on the waistline. This creates an effect in which the dress constantly and subtly rotates and seems to grow when the drops fall on it.'
