Five past Design Indaba speakers on how they perceive product design

02:44
Watch Design Indaba Alumni give their take on what it means to make quality functional products. Massimo Vignelli, Tom Dixon, Yves Béhar, Ayse Birsel and Hella Jongerius. These names need no introduction. While these product designers all sit in the same field, they’ve each generated a different approach in what they do. For San- Francisco based design , Yves Béhar it has always been about how his designs are perceived. The product designer is the founder of Fuseproject, a design and branding firm that specialises in a combination of tech and design. “As a designer what drives me is not so much style or the way the product looks, it's about finding places in the world for design to express itself, for that idea to express itself in a lot of different mediums,” he explains. The product designer has done collaborations with Puma, Samsung and Italian fashion house Prada. Tom Dixon, on the other hand, is known as a self-taught product designer, who has always been about the creation of more than just a product. Currently based in London, Dixon is the creative director of the brand ‘Tom Dixon’ which specialises in accessories and furniture. “I think the whole thing about design is improving stuff, certainly it's about functionality and its about solving problems,” says Dixon. Dixon is one of the few speakers who has spoken more than once at the Conference. For his 2018 talk, Dixon delved deeper into the designs behind the products and the impact it has. Like Dixon, Hella Jongerius has also spoken more than once. The Dutch designer is known for her contemporary product designs, which include lighting, furniture, ceramics and textiles. She is also one not to shy away from combining traditional designs with that of contemporary ones. Jongerius also looks into giving each of her products character, instead of seeing it as just an object. “What I’m focused on I’m designing the relation between an object and a human being, so when does an object still communicate to somebody and when do you wanna have it and also carry it and keep it for a longer time around you,” says Jongerius. When she spoke at the 2015 Design Indaba Conference, Jongerius looked at her career as a professional designer and her love for unusual material combinations. Design problem-solving is Ayse Birsel's focus. The New York-based designer is the creative director of Birsel + Seck, which serves as a design studio. “What speaks to me is design as problem-solving, how can you solve a problem or settle problems to transform people’s lives through design and improve their lives,” says Birsel. During her 2017 Conference talk, Birsel presented an interactive presentation for our audience, where she spoke about the importance of designing a meaningful future for oneself. All this information came from her book and coursework which teaches you to Design the Life You Love. Lastly, when legendary product designer Massimo Vignelli passed away in 2014 the impact was felt throughout the design world. Vignelli who was the co-founder of Vignelli Associates worked alongside his wife Lella Vignelli. “I’m not interested in styles, I’m interested in the notion of quality. You know good designs still sell year after year,” says Vignelli. Over the years Vignelli’s work has evolved and has gone onto include package design, architectural graphics, interiors and furniture design. Vignelli who spoke at the 2007 Design Indaba Conference, took the audience through his 50 years of famous designs each representing his signature styles of simplicity and timelessness.

What is UX Design? Defining User Experience Design & Explaining the Process

34:40
Jose and Chris explain what UX Design is by working on the redesign of The Skool's website. User Experience Design (UXD) is the process of enhancing user satisfaction by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure provided in the interaction between the user and a product or service. If you've ever been curious about UX or want to see Jose do "his UX thing" this is an episode to watch. You'll also see how we design more effective landing pages by thinking about what our "users" challenges/pain points are, and then addressing them through messaging. You should always consider... Who the Customer is. What their challenges are. How can YOU solve them? ...and confront possible user objections and questions such as... "Is this for me?" "Does it work?" "What is it exactly?" Development of Tools to improve efficiency Industrial and Engineering Design

04:47
Kato Laboratory Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University "Development of Tools to improve efficiency Industrial and Engineering Design" The Kato Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University is conducting research on design theory and methodology for effective design that is crucial to ptoduct developments, and it also researches product design that applies the theory and methodology. "User demands for products have become diversified in recent years. As a result, not only are products becoming more complex with greater functionality, their design processes have also become more complex. At our lab, we are conducting research on techniques and tools so that product design can be carried out more effectively and efficiently." The Kato Laboratory conducts research on three main topics: optimal design, in which multiple specifications and evaluations concerning design are optimized; design management, in which specifications and processes are managed and design reworkings are minimized; and Kansei (sensitivity) design, in which people's feelings and impressions are valued. "Within optimal design, Our Laboratory is particularly focused on robust optimal design. Optimal design sets design parameters for best performance, while robust optimal design is not only concerned with performance quality, it also aims to reduce performance variation due to product user or usage environment. Although it may appear that the only variable added is variation, in fact when variation is taken into consideration, the amount of calculations needed for optimization greatly increases. Our Laboratory is developing an algorithm for efficient optimization." In addition, research on design management involves the study of techniques to support accurate and smooth operations sought by designers. "Designers do their design work while organizing and and arranging a huge number of the items that must be addressed in the design process. If this does not go well, design reworkings will occur due to the design and specification changes, which leads to increased development costs and time. As such, design management is very important. Our Laboratory is developing an analysis tool for organizing the relationship between the numerous items." The Kato Laboratory uses the techniques of quality function deployment and design structure matrix—which are capable of organizing complex relationships between items such as customer design requests, function, physical characteristics, and parts—to develop tools that can visually display these relationships in an easy to understand manner. The laboratory is also developing products that use these tools. In research on Kansei design, methods to evaluate beauty of two- and three-dimensional shapes are being studied. "As with the golden ratio that is found in many works of art and architecture, shapes considered to be “beautiful” are said to be characterized by some hidden rule. If this rule can be discovered and “beauty” is quantified, it can be used to support styling design of products." "Our Laboratory is focused on curved lines and surfaces and proposed a system for evaluating cognitive features of shapes said to influence beauty, including complexity and order, which uses an index related to curvature variation." In addition, the Kato Laboratory uses Near-infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) equipment to measure cerebral blood flow changes as it aims to quantitatively evaluate impressions felt by people when they see a design. Focused on these three research areas, by quantifying the design process and people's sensitivities, the Kato Laboratory is aiming to bring about AI-coordinated design and automated design. "Through this research, we want to improve the design activity, and to contribute if even in a small way to the manufacturing industry."
What is FUNCTIONALITY DOCTRINE? What does FUNCTIONALITY DOCTRINE mean?

03:43
What is FUNCTIONALITY DOCTRINE? What does FUNCTIONALITY DOCTRINE mean? FUNCTIONALITY DOCTRINE meaning - FUNCTIONALITY DOCTRINE definition - FUNCTIONALITY DOCTRINE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ In United States trademark law, the functionality doctrine prevents manufacturers from protecting specific features of a product by means of trademark law. There are two branches of the functionality doctrine: utilitarian functionality and aesthetic functionality. The rationale behind functionality doctrine is that product markets would not be truly competitive if newcomers could not make a product with a feature that consumers demand. Utilitarian functionality provides grounds to deny federal trademark protection to product features which do something useful. Patent law, not trademark, protects useful processes, machines, and material inventions. Patented designs are presumed to be functional until proven otherwise. Aesthetic functionality provides grounds to deny trademark protection to design features which are included to make the product more aesthetically appealing and commercially desirable. Aesthetic features are within the purview of copyright law, which provides protection to creative and original works of authorship. Courts will look to the following factors when determining utilitarian functionality: Whether a feature is essential to the use or purpose of the product; or Whether a feature affects the cost or quality of the product; or Whether granting of trademark for the exclusive use of the feature would put competitors at a significant non-reputation related disadvantage As of 2014 the federal circuit courts are split on their utilitarian functionality analysis. Most circuits, such as the Fifth Circuit and the Sixth Circuit follow the Supreme Court's analysis in TrafFix Devices, Inc. v. Marketing Displays, Inc., which focuses on whether the feature is essential to the use or purpose of the product. The Federal Circuit in contrast focuses its analysis on whether permitting a product feature to be trademarked would impair competitors. In the United States, the “functionality” doctrine exists to stop a party from obtaining exclusive trade dress or trademark rights in the functional features of a product or its packaging. The doctrine developed as a way to preserve the division between what trademark law protects and areas that are better protected by patent or copyright law. Thus, the functionality doctrine serves to prevent trademark owners from inhibiting legitimate competition When the aesthetic development of the good is intended to enhance the design and make the product more commercially desirable, trademark protection may be denied because the consumer is drawn to the design. The distinctiveness of the mark serves to identify the product rather than the source, and trademark protection becomes inappropriate. The underlying theory as aesthetics become integrated with functionality, the resulting product strongly resembles product design, which may receive no trademark protection absent secondary meaning. This defense is generally seen in the fashion industry. Clothing brands can only be protected if they've acquired secondary meaning, and most of clothing design is held to be functional and is afforded no protection.

Why a Minimum Viable Product Design Strategy Works - Joe Stump

03:28
In Chapter 16 of 17 in his 2011 Capture Your Flag interview with host Erik Michielsen, Internet entrepreneur and SimpleGeo CTO Joe Stump shares why less is more when designing and building consumer Internet products. He takes a minimum viable product - or MVP - approach to release products with core features and build on them after initial feedback. He contrasts this with taking an approach that layers on non-essential features that dilute user experience and core feature functionality. He notes Apple and its initial iPhone release with roughly six apps. Stump is the co-founder and CTO at SimpleGeo (www.simplegeo.com), a San Francisco-based mobile location infrastructure services company. Previously Stump was Lead Architect at Digg. He programs in PHP, Python, Django and enjoys scaling websites. He earned a BBA in Computer Information Systems from Eastern Michigan University. Innovation - Students of Product Design Episode1

12:49
This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. I have a lot more planned, so please be patient, stay tuned and follow me, so that you can be alerted to when the next video is launched. www.producttank.co.uk

Digital Product Design - Impacting Content Through Tools Design

43:32
Digital Product Design NYC Meetup - Infor NYC - Jan 24 2017 - Impacting Content Through Tools Design https://www.meetup.com/NYC-Digital-Product-Design/events/236336723/ Today's media landscape has embraced digital as the preferred form of content distribution. This talk explores the powerful impact that the design of creation tools can have on that content, affecting the experience of both creators and consumers alike. As an editorial tools designer at BuzzFeed, I have the great privilege of working beside innovative authors, producers, and illustrators every day. They transform their ideas into digital content within a suite of tools, which, for better or for worse, inevitably influences the end product. We often focus our efforts on addressing the needs of our direct user, the creator, by improving the usability of tools like our CMS. However, we must also carefully consider the larger role we have in shaping an experience for our user’s user, the consumer. From internal to consumer-facing products, many of us are designing systems that help people make things – whether that means writing a blog post, publishing a product listing, or a crafting a fundraising campaign. In the case of authoring digital content, I'll explain how the design decisions we make for tools can help improve the output that those tools produce. You'll learn: - The role of tools in creation and learning, within and beyond the publishing industry - How to identify the right user needs to address in order to make a meaningful impact on content - How to mitigate the challenges of designing for creators - Strategies for crafting the best experiences for both your user and your user’s user SPEAKER Lindsey Maratta is a product designer at BuzzFeed, focused on content creation and curation tools, and a core contributor to Solid, the company’s open-source front end style guide. She was previously a freelance designer and a founding member and design lead of Spartle, an Australian-based social fitness startup. https://twitter.com/lindseymaratta VENUE Infor - http://www.infor.com/company/#love-your-work We build beautiful business applications with last mile functionality and scientific insights for select industries delivered as a cloud service. Topics at our meet up cover a range of subjects throughout the full product life cycle including customer insight techniques, strategy, interaction design, metrics, growth, marketing, tools, technology, team collaboration, etc. Our goal is to empower teams to transform their existing work patterns to refresh delivery and work environments. Game design and Google: August de los Reyes talks great design (Method, Ep 17)

30:07
In this episode, host Travis Neilson interviews August de los Reyes, a UX director at Google, about considering a product’s cultural equity—its noneconomic and nonfunctional benefits—and how that influences a user’s state of being. De los Reyes also touches on everything from game and car design to the Eames’ Powers of Ten to illustrate how zooming in and out of designed systems can help bridge the gap between the designer’s intent, the functionality of a product, and the user’s emotional response. Innovative Packaging Products Combine Shelf Appeal with Functionality

02:33
http://www.euromonitor.com/ Shelf appeal and pack functionality are two of the main trends Euromonitor observed at interpack 2014, and some the innovative brands are combining these trends into one package. For instance, Japanese canned preserved food brand Meidi-Ya recently changed its corned beef packaging from a metal can to a plastic container. This switch helps the product stand out on the shelf due to the material used, and is easier to open than a metal can with a key. Another instance of these converging trends is found in the Lancôme product Rénergie Lift Multi-Action Reviva-Concentrate, which is hot stampped to produce a metal look and has an innovative closure that twists to open or close the product to prevent spillage.
