Go-to-market strategy examples

16:01
We’ll give you three examples to best build a go-to-market strategy that will help you make money and drive long-term growth. Get a free trial of our new sales and marketing planning software at: http://register.funnelplan.com/ -------------- The right strategy doesn't depend on your product, but your buyers. Let's take a look at the companies, their buyers, and their strategy. At the end I'll give you a model for working this out for yourself. Desktop Computers For my first example, let's take a company that wants to own the desktop computing market. Firstly, come up with something that's truly amazing and different, clever, unique. Take that to as broad a market as you possibly can, and this is what the company I'm about to talk about did. Take it to as broad a market as you possibly can. Find out from that early market experience what group of buyers are likely to be a good market for you to focus on in the future. Start very broadly, selling very widely. Find the pattern and then find a niche that you think might be worth dominating, and then completely change the strategy and focus just on that. Leader in an enterprise software category For my second go to market strategy example, I'm going to pick an established player in an established market. Very different story. This established player in an established market had done such a good job of riding the enterprise applications market, that they were near dominant in that space. That's good news, but it's also bad news. The bad news is that pretty much all of the market, the enterprise market, had already bought either from this company, or from one of their competitors. Whilst they enjoyed the lion's share of the market, the market was pretty much drying up. Everybody had bought a product like this from either them or from their competitor. Challenger in enterprise software For my third go to market strategy example, again I'll stick to a mature market, but this time the company's not the gorilla. In fact, they're probably fourth on a good day. Maybe less, maybe fifth or sixth in the market. It's a big market, and they've done well, they've profited, and they've used those profits to continue to invest in sales and marketing as well as R&D. The problem is that as the market started to decline, their fortunes declined. They'll continue to invest, but they're investing in order to grow their share in a market that was pretty much consolidating. Now we're losing money hand over fist. What's the right strategy then? Businesses therefore need to understand that shopping products have to have sales people to sell them. What are the characteristics of a product, and how do marketers classify products? How can companies differentiate products? Why is product design important and what factors affect a good design? How can a company build and manage its product mix and product lines? How can companies combine products to create strong co-brands or ingredient brands? How can companies use packaging, labeling, warranties, and guarantees as marketing tools? This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. Differentiation Strategy

04:29
Differentiation strategies are attractive whenever buyers’ needs and preferences are too diverse to be fully satisfied by a standardized product or service. The essence of a broad differentiation strategy is to offer unique product or service attributes that a wide range of buyers find appealing and worth paying for. A company attempting to succeed through differentiation must study buyers’ needs and behavior carefully to learn what buyers think has value and what they are willing to pay for. Then the company must include these desirable features to clearly set itself apart from rivals lacking such product or service attributes. Successful differentiation allows a firm to - Command a premium price. Increase unit sales (because additional buyers are won over by the differentiating features). And gain buyer loyalty to its brand (because some buyers are strongly attracted to the differentiating features and bond with the company and its products). Differentiation opportunities can exist in activities all along an industry’s value chain and particularly in activities and factors that meaningfully impact customer value. Such activities are referred to as uniqueness drivers have a high impact on differentiation rather than on a company’s overall cost position. A low-cost provider strategy can always defeat a differentiation strategy when buyers are satisfied with a basic product and don’t think “extra” attributes are worth a higher price.

For instance, Head & Shoulders that helps consumers relieve dandruff in the form of a shampoo, Oral-B which offers inter-dental products, Vicks which offers cough and cold products, and Downy which offers dryer sheets and fabric softeners. Other examples include Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Kellogg's, and Mars. This approach usually results in higher promotion costs and advertising. This is due to the company being required to generate awareness among consumers and retailers for each new brand name without the benefit of any previous impressions. Multibranding strategy has many advantages. There is no risk that a product failure will affect other products in the line as each brand is unique to each market segment. Although, certain large multiband companies have come across that the cost and difficulty of implementing a multibranding strategy can overshadow the benefits. For example, Unilever, the world's third-largest multination consumer goods company recently streamlined its brands from over 400 brands to centre their attention onto 14 brands with sales of over 1 billion euros. Unilever accomplished this through product deletion and sales to other companies. Other multibrand companies introduce new product brands as a protective measure to respond to competition called fighting brands or fighter brands.

99.9% Of eCommerce Products Will NEVER Sell Without this! | eCommerce Marketing Strategy

04:44
If you want to make money from the web, it's not as simple as setting up a Shopify store and just generating sales. If it was that easy, no one would be going into an office and working in the normal workforce. Today I'm going to share why 99% of eCommerce will never sell without this. You'll learn an easy eCommerce marketing strategy that can help you grow your ecommerce sales quickly and effectively. RESOURCES & LINKS: ____________________________________________ 7 Proven Ways to Grow eCommerce Sales By 50% or More (video): https://youtu.be/ECFguym4230 5 Ecommerce Optimization Tips to Improve Your Product Page Conversion Rates (video): https://youtu.be/_e_0iu54wUQ ____________________________________________ So are you wondering what that one thing is? It's persuasive copy. No, I'm not talking about a tool or anything like that. It really is copy. Just think of it this way, someone lands on your site, whether you do ads or SEO or email marketing, they check out this product that you're selling, but then, they don't see much. They just see a few sentences, maybe a picture. You think they're going to buy? No, that's why over 95, 98, 99% of your visitors don't convert. And it's why you're creating eCommerce products, putting them on your store and you're like, huh, why am I not getting any sales? It's because of the copy. You're not interacting with the person. When you go to a physical store, you're interacting potentially with a salesperson. That salesperson guides you, they help you, they, oh, you need this size to try on for this shirt? Oh, this looks good, oh no, that doesn't look good, you shouldn't get that, but instead, you should get this. You don't have that on the web. So, what do you have to do to convince people to buy? You need persuasive copy. So now that you know that it's persuasive copy, let's go over a few things that you can do to make sure that your copy is truly persuasive. One, talk about the benefit. It's not just about hey, I'm selling this product, it's about the solution that, that product is giving people to their problems. For example, if you're selling toilet paper, and toilet paper, the one that you're selling is so soft people don't have a rough bum from that, your solution is ultra-soft toilet paper. It'll make you feel like your bum is sitting on clouds. I'm making it up. And if your reviews on that page enforce that, you're going to get more sales, right? So, you have to talk about the solution and the benefit that your solution is providing. The second tip I have for you, persuasive copy isn't just copy. A picture says a thousand words. So, if your pictures are amazing in your eCommerce product, you'll do really well. Taking professional pictures, 360 degree view cameras, showcasing your products, all this stuff will help boost sales and conversions. The third thing, reviews. The copy isn't just about how much can you convince people to buy your product, it's also how much can other people convince others to buy your product. You need a lot of reviews on your site. Whether they're bad reviews or good reviews, let them all through because they'll help tell other people if they should be buying your product. And the fourth tip when it comes to persuasive copy, you need to make sure you go really in-depth on every little thing that your product provides. Every feature, every nook and cranny of it. Think about any objections someone has when it comes to buying your product. If you answer all those objections in the copy, you'll get more sales. And the last tip I have for you, your copy doesn't end on your product page. From your checkout page to the thank you page, all of that's copy. If you can optimize your checkout page and be like get this delivered to you within two days, emphasizing free shipping, things like that can help boost your sales. Using a two-step checkout instead of a one-step checkout, that of course, helps boost sales as well. Doing things like on your thank you page after they checkout, upselling more products and services, that of course, boosts sales. If you do those things, you'll start seeing that more of your products will start selling. ► If you need help growing your business check out my ad agency Neil Patel Digital @ https://neilpateldigital.com/ ►Subscribe: https://goo.gl/ScRTwc to learn more secret SEO tips. ►Find me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/neilkpatel/ #eCommerce #NeilPatel #DigitalMarketing

SWOT analysis in practice - Starbucks -------------------------------- Strategy analysis has two main branches – analysis of a firm’s external environment and analysis of a firm’s internal environment. SWOT is a famous framework that allows us to combine the two types of analysis. SWOT is sometimes referred to as internal-external analysis. The acronym SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. The first two, Strengths and Weaknesses, are related to a firm’s internal environment, while the last two, Opportunities and Threats, consider its external environment. Internal strengths and external opportunities are vertically paired as helpful elements, while internal weaknesses and external threats are paired as harmful elements. if we perform a company analysis, under strengths, we would expect to see its core competences, the areas where the business excels and has a competitive advantage over competitors. Weaknesses are areas that need improvement. Such vulnerabilities place a company at a disadvantage when competing against other firms. Opportunities can be seen as favorable factors existing in a company’s external environment, in the industry where it operates, and have the potential to improve its current results and competitive positioning. Threats arise in a company’s external environment and might harm its current business.

Product Strategy In a Growing Company

20:45
With a growing user base comes pressure to expand your feature set for tangential use cases. It's easy to get sucked into building a toolbox of related features, rather than a holistic product. In the short term a toolbox may help win more customers, but in the long term it hurts your product by making it difficult to market and even harder to adopt. Des will share his experience consulting with over 100 growing companies, helping them identify their core features- and orient a product strategy around them. You'll get clear takeaways to help plan your product roadmap.

Product Design Strategy

02:00
Design strategy can play a role in helping to resolve the following common problems: Promoting the adoption of a technology (Example: Toyota designing the hybrid Prius to resemble the conservative Echo instead of making the Prius look high-tech and adventuresome) Identifying the most important questions that a company's products and services should address (Example: John Rheinfrank of Fitch Design showed Kodak that its disposable cameras didn't exist to replace traditional cameras, but instead to meet specific needs, like weddings, underwater photography and others) Translating insights into actionable solutions (Example: Jump Associates helped Target turn an understanding of college students into a dorm room line designed by Todd Oldham) Prioritizing the order in which a portfolio of products and services should be launched (Example: Apple Inc. laid out the iPod+iTunes ecosystem slowly over time, rather than launching all of its pieces at once) Connecting design efforts to an organization's business strategy (Example: Hewlett-Packard's global design division is focused most intently on designs that simplify technology experiences. This leads to lower manufacturing costs at a time when CEO Mark Hurd is pushing for cost-cutting) Integrating design as a fundamental aspect of strategic brand intent (Example: Tom Hardy, Design Strategist, developed the core brand-design principle ″Balance of Reason & Feeling″ for Samsung Electronics, together with rational and emotional attributes, to guide design language within a comprehensive brand-design program that inspired differentiation and elevated the company's global image) For more information visit: http://www.focuspdm.com/

The Right Go-to-Market Strategy for Your Product Launch

41:07
Today in this post we will demonstrate how to integrate your product strategy with your go-to-market strategy. As a guide to the discussion, download our 10th annual workbook, How to Make Your Number in 2017. Turn to the product strategy Go-to-Market section that begins on pages 138 - 151 of the PDF. My interview with Terry Hicks, Chief Product Officer at Infusionsoft provides clarity on this topic. Infusionsoft is the leading provider of sales and marketing software for small businesses. Prior to Infusionsoft, Terry led Quickbooks online at Intuit, growing subscribers from 450,000 to 850,000 in under two years. That's a remarkable track record. Terry is responsible for the company’s entire product development process from determining where to focus the company’s efforts, through new product launch. Watch as we discuss how to integrate your product strategy with your go-to-market strategy. Your company is investing money in order to growth faster than their industry and competitors. Make sure you are getting it right by integrating your product strategy with your go to market strategy as Terry has. Terry provides three key ways to integrate the product and go-to-market strategies. Watch the episode to dive deep into the use case and think through the insights that can be ‘aha’ moments for your business. • First, Terry recommends really knowing and understanding your customer. Your product strategy and go-to-market strategy need to determine who you’re trying to serve, and what problems you’re trying to solve. • Second, really understand the customer’s behavior. The best way to do this is through testing. Because what customers say, and what they do, is often different. Terry recommends setting up simple tests to validate key hypothesis quickly. • And finally, Terry recommends understanding that the product is everyone’s responsibility. As you’re thinking about customer insights and product testing, include the cross-functional teams. Companies often spend about 30-40% of top line revenue on product, marketing and sales. This can be the largest expense on your income statement. Yet, many do not look at these as integrated expenses.

This case could be found in a first round or in a final-round partner interview in McKinsey, Bain, or BCG, in any office around the world. Most candidates would not be able to create a MECE framework to this case - I would say 60-80% would not pass. The reason is that this is an unusual, out-of-the-box case question. Pre-made frameworks like Victor Cheng's, Case in Point's, and others would not help. In this video, you will watch me, Julio, an ex-Bainee, interviewing Bruno, ex-McKinsey, with a hard, MBB-level case. A tough one. Bruno can get away safely. He would definitely get an offer based on this. Would you? Table of contents (so you can find stuff later in the future): 00:34 - Case question 03:21 - Bruno's answer 10:29 - Brainstorming question 11:35 - Bruno's answer to Brainstorming question 16:22 - Follow-up question and answer 19:28 - Analytical question 21:10 - Bruno's answer 26:31 - Recommendation question 26:54 - Bruno's recomendation If you'd like to see more case interview examples like this one, let us know in the comments and we'll definitely act upon it.
