You might feel it in your lower back or your shoulder but you find yourself thinking did I do something wrong or does this exercise just suck. Well it really isn't always you. There are a lot of exercises out there that are plain bad for you & they only continue to exist just because they've been passed down from one misinformed gym to the next, & noones been smart enough to realize that these common exercises are no good. So today we're going over 10 exercises that all men should avoid & these exercises aren't only exclusive to men. Women should avoid these exercises as well it's just that in this video we'll be sticking to exercises that i usually find men doing wrong. The very first one that I want to start with is actually a group of exercises that guys are drawn to like moths to a flame. I'm talking about all the selectorizor ab machines at your local gym. The machines that you usually start by sitting down pulling out the pin, selecting your weight, then grabing some handles behind your head & doing crunches. These machines are not only a waste of time but they are also dangerous for your lower back. All these selectorizor ab machines are locked into a range of motion, meaning that your joints & your disks can't travel down their natural path, you can only travel down the path that the machine has set for you. Even if you adjust the machine to your body perfectly, which by the way is very hard to do, but even if you somehow had a machine customized for your body you can still easily run into lower back issues because you're still locked in a set range of motion throughout the entire exercise. Besides a greater potential for a lower back injury you will also get significantly less results from these machines than if you stuck to regular ab exercises like crunches, hanging knee tucks, & declined situps. The reason is once again due to the fact that your locked into a range of motion. The core's main responsibility is stabilization. And it's important to improve your functional core strength because your core isn't only responsible for stabilizing your trunk but it stabilizes your whole body. It is the bridge that connects your lower body to your upper body. When you're locked in a range of motion you take all of the stabilization normally required for ab exercises out of the movement. The really ironic part is that those abdominal stabilizer muscles that you're not working on these machines are very important to strengthen in order to prevent the lower back injury that you'll likely experience on one of these machines. Due to the fact that you're not working your stabilizers you're missing out on all of those deep tissue abdominal muscles like your transverse abdominus & your only targeting mostly your rectus abdominus which is the very outer layer six pack looking muscle. The transverse abdominus is very important to work because not only does it help prevent injury, but it also pulls your stomach in keeping everything nice & tight giving you that flat stomach look. If you want to make your ab exercises tougher use weights by simply holding a dumbbell or a plate either behind your head or accross your chest while doing regular traditional ab exercises. Once again if you don't know where to start start with exercises like stability ball crunches, declined situps, & hanging knee tucks. The next exercise you should avoid is the behind the head shoulder press. First off there is absolutely no advantage to going behind your head. None. Even though I'm sure some old school guys will be disagreeing with me in the comments below you can research this yourself & you'll find that when you go behind the head you're still targeting the same muscles that you would if you went in front of your head & there's no advantage when going behind your head that will allow you to build your shoulder muscle faster.

Because after spending years building muscle naturally I've learned that there are certain useless exercises that you should avoid entirely other exercises that you might want to consider incorporating and then there are the exercises that you just cant go without. Exercises that by themselves have the power to transform your physique. I've narrowed this list down to just seven of the most important exercises that you absolutely should have as a staple part of your routine to efficiently build the most muscle in the shortest amount of time. By mastering these 7 key compound exercises you'll see incredible results even if you're not doing any other exercises in the gym. And I made this video specifically for men not because women can't benefit from these exercises as well but because the ideal attractive body type for men is a V shape whereas for women it's more of an hourglass figure. So even though a lot of the exercises do crossover for both men women this video is specifically to help you develop the best manly physique with the least amount of exercises possible. I'm going to list off these exercises in no particular order, so Let's start first with a very important upper body exercise the bent over barbell Row. With this exercise you'll be working the rhomboids which are the muscles that connect your shoulder blades together so your upper back muscles and you'll also be working the back of your shoulder and your biceps. This is one of the most important pulling movements that you can do. Because you're working multiple muscle groups responsible for Pulling you're able to lift a lot more weight with this compound exercise then if you were to isolate any one of these muscles individually. By strengthening your rhomboids and your posterior deltoid you'll be tightening up your upper back which will help you hold yourself straight up and maintain a better more attractive upright posture. Since you can lift heavy weight with this exercise your biceps are also going to get a lot of stimulation because you'll be lifting a weight that would be impossible to lift with an isolated movement like bicep curls. A basic bent over row is done by grabbing a barbell with your hands a little wider than shoulder-width apart. Stick your butt out and stick your chest out before beginning the movement. Then bend down by about 60 degrees so you're a little higher than being fully parallel to the ground and you want let the weight hang straight down, do not flex your shoulders. While keeping your chest out pull the barbell inward towards your stomach and aim to touch your belly button with the bar. Then bring it back down to that hanging position and repeat this motion for reps. The great thing about rows is that you can do it with a barbell or you can do it with dumbbells, but a general rule of thumb to remember is that you'll be able to lift more weight and typically you'll be able to build more mass with barbells over dumbbells. Also by changing the angles at which you bend during a bent over row you can Target different parts of your back. A fully bent-over position where you're at a 90 degree angle will Target more of your lats and the middle of your back whereas standing more upright will Target more of your traps and upper back. Let's move on to another staple exercise that you should be doing, barbell and dumbbell chest presses. While the rows will help you develop the posterior or the back part of your upper body the chest presses are there to help you develop the anterior or the front part of your upper body. It'll hit your chest, the front head of your shoulders as well as your triceps. With chest presses you want to spend the majority of your time doing them at two different angles flat and incline. If your weakness is your upper chest you want to spend more of your time doing incline presses. if your upper chest is fine but you lack lower chest development you want to spend more of your time doing flat movements. You're welcome. 7. Romance Movies. And you better believe that some of them have a guilty pleasure for romantic, “girly” movies. When a guy runs out of deodorant, it can seem like the end of the world for them. Now testosterone and estrogen are supposed to be maintained in the correct balance. But when estrogen levels rise, testosterone levels tend to drop, and same thing vice versa. Having lower testosterone and higher estrogen can lead to a loss of muscle mass, increased body fat especially around your belly and your chest, and it can also lead to hair loss, depression, and even sexual dysfunction. So since these are things that most men want to avoid I want to go over the 5 really bad habits that cause estrogen levels to rise and testosterone levels to drop in men. If you want to increase your testosterone levels naturally you're definitely going to want to follow along because towards the end I'll explain how eating what you might think is a healthy diet can actually be lowering your testosterone levels even if your diet is high in healthy fats. How many times have you heard the old expression, "this is a man's job"? We're pretty tired of it, and fortunately, so is California photographer Chris Crisman. With his latest portfolio, Women's Work, he's documenting the women who do those 'men's jobs' with pride, and he's breaking down gender stereotypes in the process. The story of Women's Work starts in early 2016, when Crisman heard from an art producer that a friend of hers had become a butcher, and realized that he had never actually met a female butcher. After meeting and photographing the woman, Heather Marold Thomason, Crisman was inspired to find other women taking on traditionally male-dominated professions. From farmers, to firefighters, to lobster fishers, he was able to locate and capture dozens of inspiring women from across the nation, and finally rolled out the project in October 2016. Though Women's Work is now 'out there,' Crisman insists that it's a work-in-progress. "There are so many people that we would still love to include in the project, but we’ll get there. I believe that Women’s Work is the type of project where the purpose does not have an expiration date," he told APE in a November interview. Given their ease of setup, they are actually a great exercise for home workouts too since you can do them on the back of a couch or chair. The problem is, the bench dip is also one of the most abused and misperformed exercises which can quickly ruin your shoulders if you don’t fix how you’re doing them. In this video, I’m going to show you how to perform a bench dip safely so you can build your muscles without wrecking your shoulders. The problem with the bench dip starts with the position of your shoulders during the exercise. The two things you want to avoid is letting your shoulders migrate forward as you do them, or upwards as you go down into the rep. Either one of these mistakes will wind up putting your shoulder in a compromising position that could create an impingement on the rotator cuff tendons, bursa or both. The shoulders tend to protrude forward when doing the bench dip mostly because of the initial positioning of the hands on the bench. If you have your thumbs facing your body, you are automatically internally rotating the shoulder and making it virtually impossible that you’ll be able to perform the exercise properly without risk of injury. To correct this you want to start by rotating your hands outward so that your thumbs are pointing toward the front at the very least if not a little bit more. From here, you want to consciously make sure that you open your chest and keep your shoulders back rather than letting them lazily fall forward as you start the exercise. This becomes much easier to do when you don’t allow your shoulders to shrug up or collapse on your body as you descend into every rep. Actively depress your shoulder blades and keep your shoulders unshrugged throughout the exercise to ensure that you are keeping the proper position during the bench dip. When you get both of these correct you will automatically notice two things. The first is that your shoulders feel much better and do not feel any pinching pain or grinding. The second is that you are feeling way more work being done by your triceps than at any time before making these changes. When you make these tweaks you place more of the stress on the working muscles and you wind up getting much more out of the exercise. Regarding the difficulty of the exercise, the closer your keep your feet during the movement the easier it becomes. If you want more of a challenge, you would keep your feet far away from your body and even progress to performing it on your heels. Beginners might need to keep their feet in close to their body and flat on the floor to make sure they are doing the exercise right. It is far more important to get it right first and then progress the difficulty than the other way around. Waking up feeling stiff is extremely common, especially if you work out the day before. In this video, I’m going to show you the 4 best stretches to do every morning to help loosen up and increase your flexibility for the rest of the day. Much of what you are trying to overcome are the tightnesses that develop from our sleeping posture. Each of these stretches is going to help hit these key areas and allow you to do it quickly so as not to take up much time. The first move is actually not a static stretch but rather a dynamic movement. The goal is to groove the hip hinge while at the same time stretch out the hamstrings a bit since many of us have chronically tight hamstring muscles from sitting all day. The reason we do this RDL movement however is not to statically stretch the hamstring but simply to warm them up. In the case of an anterior pelvic tilt you would not want to perform long stretches of the hamstrings, as they tend to be taut from pelvic positioning not actually muscle tightness. From here you want to drop down into a deep squat position with your hands between your legs and flat on the floor. The goal is to turn your hands away from you with your fingers pointed backwards. This will stretch out the forearms and finger flexors while at the same time providing a nice stretch for the biceps. Believe it or not, the biceps do tend to get tight when sleeping because we sleep with our arms in some variation of a bent elbow position for hours on end. The goal of this deep stretch however is to loosen up the hips and groin. If you are a side sleeper you will have your legs likely pulled up into your chest and your knees pressed against each other. This will tighten both the hip flexors and the hip adductors or groin muscles. There is nothing more important in the morning than trying to re-establish a looseness to these muscles since asymmetrical pulling on the pelvis can cause lots of postural low back pain and stiffness throughout the day. Use your elbows to drive your knees apart and deepen the stretch while at the same time let your thighs help to reinforce the straightness of your arms for that good biceps and forearm stretch. Next you want to really get at those hip flexors and stretch them out. The best way to do that is with an overhead leaning lunge stretch. Here you want to grab a wooden dowel, broomstick, etc that you can plant into the ground in front of you outside of your forward leg. Drop the opposite leg behind you until you feel a deep stretch on the upper front side of your thigh. From here, reach up to the top of the stick with both hands and twist/lean towards that side to enhance the stretch. If you do this right, you will be extending through the thoracic spine to regain any lost mobility from sleeping with a rounded upper back supported by the pillow. Finally, you perform the standing shoulder stretch with the dowel or stick as well. This is an incredible stretch that will help to externally rotate your shoulders and work on loosening up the posterior deltoids as well. When laying on your side or on your stomach, your shoulders are often positioned into internal rotation. Again, the problem here is that you aren’t just staying like this for a few minutes but rather hours! If you want to loosen up the tightnesses that you cause by sleeping this way you have to devote just a few minutes each morning to doing that. Each of these stretches can have a profound impact by just being held for 45 seconds or so, every morning. It won’t take you long to start to see and feel the benefits of adopting these four into your morning routine. You may have found some success at developing the top portion of your abs...maybe you see those top two or 4 abdominal muscles starting to pop out but as you get lower you're experiencing more and more difficulty getting that bottom section of your abs to show. And one thing's for certain if you want to see a full complete looking six pack with a slim v cut waistline you're going to have to be doing the right things. And even though diet is of Paramount importance the exercises and the workouts that you're doing to build your lower ab muscles are almost equally as important. So that's why I want to go over the 5 best lower ab exercises that you're actually probably not even doing. These are gonna be by far the most efficient lower ab exercises out there that'll put the most stress on that bottom portion of your abs so you could experience the fastest results possible. Before we dive into the first exercise I'd like to mention that your rectus abdominus which is that outer layer six-pack looking muscle is 1 muscle group. So we can't strictly isolate the lower abs without also incorporating some upper ab work as well. But what we can do is we can put more tension on the lower ab area by doing exercises from different angles, by adjusting our form and by incorporating more efficient training techniques. And I'll be going over all of that in today's video. Let's start with one of the most efficient lower ab exercises that you're probably not doing, it's called an incline leg raise with a pulse up. The inclined angle of this movement presents an advantage that most hanging and lying flat down movements dont have. Meaning incline leg raises are going to be far more efficient then regular leg raises done flat on your back because with regular flat leg raises you can only bring your legs up to about 60 degrees before the tension comes off of your abs. Once you go past that and get closer to 90 degrees your bones and joints begin to carry the load instead of the abdominal muscles you're trying to target. Also as you lower your legs back down the tension quickly switches over to your hip flexors before you even get back to your neutral starting position. The regular "hanging" leg raises are also not quite as efficient because when you're perfectly vertical it's once again easy to incorporate a lot more of your hip flexors into the movement. There is a modified way to perform hanging leg raises in which you can target your abs much more effectively which i'll go over in a bit, but with the incline bench, I want you to understand that you're getting a perfect angle to Target the abs. To do this exercise you would use the same bench that you would use for decline sit ups except instead of having your legs above your head your head is going to be above your legs. For this reason you're going to need something to grab behind your head to keep yourself from sliding down the bench. Once you're in position with your hands gripping something behind your head you're raising your legs straight up all the way until you're feet are pointed up towards the ceiling. Once your feet are directly pointed towards the ceiling you're going to do a pulse up by raising your hips and your whole lower body off the bench up towards the ceiling in a straight line. don't bring your feet and legs behind your head while doing this keep them straight up towards the ceiling. After the pulse up slowly lower your hips back down to the bench and then lower your legs back down almost all the way until you touch the bottom of the bench and then go right back up. With your very first rep you'll notice how much more of a range of motion you'll get out of this exercise versus regular flat and hanging leg raise movements. As you progress with this exercise you can try to add a weight between your feet as well to make it more challenging. But due to the fact that this movement is much more challenging then regular leg raises it'll take you some time to progress to the point where you can add a weight. Let's move on to my second favorite lower ab movement that can be done almost anywhere with minimal equipment. That said, certain exercises deserve the title of the "worst exercise ever" simply because of the low reward, high risk nature of it. In this video, I show 5 of the worst exercises for building muscle and what you can do instead. Each of the exercises listed in this video is included because of the high risk low reward that it offers. As a physical therapist and strength coach for professional athletes, I have to know where to draw the line between the two. If a quarterback or pitcher of mine wants to do max overhead snatches, I'm going to tell them it's a bad idea. Why? Because there are other ways to train upper body explosiveness without jeopardizing their career on one fatigued or poorly performed rep. The 5 worst exercises in this video are as follows: 1. Chest flies - I've covered before why this is here. People will swear that they love the stretch they get on their pecs by doing this exercise. If you claim you never heard that argument, then you haven't spent enough time in the gym. They also claim that the adduction at the end of the movement gives them an incredible contraction on their chest. They're half right. There is no extra stretch on the pecs but they do increase the likelihood of injuring their pec with increasing loads held out at arms length. See the 3D crossover as a smarter (and better) option that you can overload even more and still get the benefits of the end contraction. 2. Behind the neck shoulder presses - The problem with this exercise is that it is bad for the shoulders. It places the glenohumeral joint in an awkward position for pressing, which can lead to impingement. Pressing from the natural scapular plane is much more natural and will allow you to press more weight overhead in the long run, leading to bigger shoulders. 3. Upright Rows - I've already discussed just how bad this exercise is for the integrity and health of the rotator cuff muscles of the shoulder. What makes this shoulder exercise one of the worst is the position of the elbows and hands at the end of the movement. The exercise puts your shoulders into a provocative position for testing impingement. Instead, you want your elbows below your hands (as in the high pull) to still get the benefits of the abduction of the shoulders without the internal rotation. 4. Good Mornings - This is actually not a terrible exercise for your back as it loads the entire kinetic chain in a functional way. The problem is that most people don't have the necessary thoracic extension to pull it off with proper form. One slip up from here with the load positioned out in front of the body as it is, and you're likely to slip something else...a disc in your lower back. 5. Leg Extensions - This is a no brainer for me. This open chain leg exercise lacks any true function when compared to the numerous closed chain options you can be doing instead. Throw in the shear stresses, ACL tension, lack of hamstring co-contraction, and the imbalance of rectus to VMO firing and you've got a recipe for disaster. For safer (and better) exercise options it's time you start training like an athlete. Follow the program used by today's top pro athletes to build ripped athletic muscle while protecting their joints and becoming more resilient to injury. Pick your program here - http://athleanx.com/x/my-workouts Subscribe to this channel here - http://bit.ly/2b0coMW Supersets are a workout technique that allow you to train multiple muscle groups (or the same muscle group) with more than one exercise without resting in between sets. This allows you to either speed up the pace of your workout, intensify the effects of your training, or both. In this video, I’m going to show you the 8 best supersets that you are not doing and tell you the specific exercises that will give you the best results if you start using them. Again, to be clear, a superset is not a drop set technically. A drop set will use the same exercise but progressively lighter weight with each successive consecutive set. What you want to do is make sure that you are picking two different exercises and pairing them together without resting at all between them. The most common way to perform supersets is with opposing muscle groups, such as the biceps and triceps. My favorite opposing muscle group superset is one that you perform for your arms and it consists of the db incline tricep extension supersetted with bicep spider curls. This gives you the advantage of getting the stretch on the long head of the triceps and then immediately perform a bicep exercise that puts the peak tension in the contracted position of the biceps. This is something that we don’t often do in our workouts let alone the same set combination. Next, you can incorporate muscle groups that tend to like to work together such as the lats and upper back muscles. Here, I like the combo of the straight arm pushdown with the cable face pulls. The lats not only benefit from the straight arm pushdowns but this helps you to perfect your form on the deadlift which is an exercise that requires strength in this position. The face pull is an incredible builder of the upper back muscles and overlooked rear delts. The UCV raise and Cavaliere Crossover combination is an example of a superset that targets the same muscle group. This one is better than the old classic bench press into pushups combo since neither of those exercises allows you to train the chest into adduction like both of the exercises in this superset allow you to. Beyond the pairing of muscles based on function, you can create supersets that rely on purpose. For example, if you want to pre-exhaust a certain muscle group so that you can use lighter than normal weights on an exercise that you normally exclusively train heavy you can do that if you pair them together as part of a superset. The shoulder “L” raise into db presses is a perfect way to do this. Grab a pair of 25 pound dumbbells and rep out to failure on this front delt and middle delt combo and immediately finish out your set by pressing those same “light” dumbbells overhead. Finally, you have options for open chain into closed chain exercises, loading and de-loading exercises and even strength or power potentiation combos. All of these are incredibly effective, especially if performed at the right time and for the right purpose in your training cycle.
