I will use one topic to teach you important English grammar (the first conditional), as well as vocabulary. You'll also learn a lot about North American culture. I'll teach you all this stuff by talking about superstitions. Is the number 13 bad luck in your culture? If you break a mirror, will you have bad luck? If you find a penny on the ground, do you think you will have a good day? Every culture has beliefs about luck. We call these beliefs superstitions. Some superstitions are common around the world, but many are very specific to a particular country or culture. My mom is really superstitious, so I grew up with a lot of these beliefs. In this video, I'll give you some examples of common North American superstitions, and in the second half of the video, I'll use this topic to teach you how to use the first conditional in English. Watch this video now. If you don't, your computer might get a virus. Take the quiz! https://www.engvid.com/learn-english-superstitions-first-conditional/ TRANSCRIPT Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's video we are going to be talking about three different things. Okay? So, we are going to be learning some new vocabulary that have to do with superstition, and I'll explain what superstitions are; we're going to be learning about culture, and Western culture, and North American culture; as well as grammar, today we are going to be learning about the first conditional. So this is a great video because you are going to be learning a lot by the end of it, hopefully. So, let's get started. First I want to tell you about superstitions. I love the topic of superstitions; I think it's very interesting. So, what a superstition is, is it is a belief, and this belief, it's usually cultural, but it can also be personal. Okay? And this belief is not based in science, so it's not scientific. Oftentimes when we're talking about superstitions we're talking about supernatural things, we're talking about good luck, bad luck, curses, you know, we're talking about things maybe from our culture's history and a different way of seeing the world. So if you're confused about superstitions, don't worry, when I give you examples you will start to really understand what a superstition is. Okay, so let's start off with an example. Imagine this: I took a test and I did really well. I got a very high score on my test. Now, why did I get a high score? Maybe you think: "Oh, you probably studied well." Okay? So that might be kind of a scientific explanation. "Oh, Emma studied, so she did well on her test." Well, maybe I brought a pen to the test and it's a very lucky pen or a very lucky pencil, and I think anytime I use this pen or pencil I'm going to do well. It's my lucky charm, it's my lucky pen or pencil. If you think I did well on my test because I have a lucky pen, then that would be an example of a superstition. It's like a ritual you do to get good luck or to keep bad luck from happening, and it's a belief about these types of things. Okay? So, if for example, I say: "I did great on my test because I brought a lucky pen to class.", "I did really well on my test because it was, you know, at 7pm and 7 is a lucky number so therefore, you know, 7pm means I'm going to do well on my test. And I wore green, and green's a lucky colour, so all these reasons helped me on my test", you would say I'm superstitious. Okay? So, "superstition" is a belief, it's a cultural belief that explains something in the world, but not based in science. A person is "superstitious". We use "superstitious" to describe people. My mother is the most superstitious person I know. She is very superstitious. In our house there are many superstitions. Okay? And that's true. I grew up in a very superstitious household. So let's look at some Western superstitions I grew up with. These are the ones that were in my own experience and my own culture. So, one example of a superstition is if you walk under a ladder, this is very bad luck. Okay? So when I walk down the street, if I see a ladder, I never walk under it because I'm also very superstitious. If you find a penny, so a penny is a type of... It's a type of currency or a type of... It's a form of money, it's a coin, and if you find a penny... If I ever find a penny, I always pick it up. Okay? I pick it up off the ground because I think the penny will give me good luck. Okay? A little crazy, I know, but a lot of people in North America do this. 13 is considered a very unlucky number. In Western culture you'll notice a lot of apartment buildings do not have a 13th floor, and that's because people think it's so... They think it's very unlucky, so they don't want to live on the 13th floor because they think they will, you know, have bad luck. I know in China the number 4 is very unlucky, and so it's the same thing. In China you don't see... In apartment buildings you usually don't see a 4th floor because it's very unlucky. Okay, so we've talked about some good luck and some bad luck.

Learn how to use Excel's IF Function in your reports. We cover a few examples in this tutorial including: 1. Simple IF function (also with greater than or less than checks). 2. IF Formula together with AND logical test to decide outcome if more than one condition is met. 3. Nested IF formula (an IF inside another IF) to check for multiple criteria. 4. IF formula with OR function (to check if "either" condition is met and then decide the outcome). 5. We also take a look at using formulas (other calculations) inside the IF function and finally: 6. How to use symbols as the result of the IF formula Your IF formula isn't working? One of the main mistakes is the "else" argument. That's the last argument inside the IF function. Make sure you haven't forgotten to specify what should happen "if" the condition isn't met. In case you have more than one condition, here's the place to add the second "if" statement. An IF formula inside another IF formula is called a nested if function. http://www.engvid.com "I wish I were...". "He wishes it would...". Wishes are a part of everyday conversation among native English speakers. Are they all dreamers? Maybe. But most of the time, we use 'wish' to talk about something that isn't true or real, more than to talk about our fantasies. In this grammar lesson for advanced students, you'll learn the correct way to construct sentences using 'wish' and the subjunctive voice. You can also take a quiz on this lesson: http://www.engvid.com/wish-subjunctive/

How many verb tenses can you count in the following sentences? "If you practice every day, you will improve. But you also need to know that if you didn't develop good study habits in the past, you might have trouble in the future." There are several verb tenses in this excerpt, and they are all mixed together. But complex sentences like these are what make English a very rich and interesting language. In this challenging lesson, we will look at conditional sentences that mix tenses and even use the verb "will" in the "if" clause. Make sure to do the quiz at http://www.engvid.com/mixed-verb-tenses-in-english-conditionals-and-if-clauses/ to practice and perfect your understanding of mixed tenses. TRANSCRIPT Hi again. Welcome to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is a little bit tricky. It's grammar, it's conditionals, but we're going to look at "Mixed Conditionals". Now, before I get into the different types of ways that you can mix tenses and the conditionals, I want to do a very quick review of the conditionals that most of you learn in your ESL classes or your English... Other English classes, because these are the ones that are most commonly taught, and everybody, all your teachers want you to memorize these structures. The problem is then you might see mixed conditionals in other places, and you get all confused. Okay? I'm not going to get too deep into these, because you can find other good lessons by other engVid teachers who have already covered some of these on the site. I'm just going to do a quick review, and then I'll get into... Deeper into the mixed conditionals. So here are the four main types of conditionals you learn: "If I won the lottery, I'd buy a house." So this, just so we are clear, is "would", I've contracted it to "I'd". "If I won", I have simple past tense, plus "would" in the second clause, in the condition clause, in the result clause. "If I had known she was coming, I'd have come too." Okay? Here I have the past perfect, plus "would have" plus PP, past participle verb. Now, these are both unreal, mean... Meaning that they are hypothetical, they are imaginary. This is about a future or present unreal situation. I didn't win the lottery, I'm not buying a house; this is all just imagination. This is about the past. Now, the reason it is unreal is because I can't go and change the past. So, this didn't happen, and so this didn't happen. This is, again, imagination, but we're looking at the past. Okay? "If you boil water, it evaporates." If you notice here, I have simple present verb and simple present verb. This is a real conditional. It means it's true. Whenever you have a fact-okay?-a result is based on this condition and it's always true... By the way, "evaporates" means becomes steam, it goes away. Right? If you boil water, eventually you have no more water in the pot. So this is a real conditional, always true. Simple present, simple present. Lastly: "If you study hard, you will pass the test." Simple present verb, "will", verb, like future. So, again, this is a real situation, because this is true. If you do this, this will happen as a result. So these are the ones that you mostly learn. If you have any questions, again, go to www.engvid.com, find the lessons about these that can explain it in more detail. But now we're going to see other situations, other sentences with "if" conditionals that are not like these. Sometimes we can mix tenses, sometimes you can... Sorry. Let me stop myself, here. Sometimes your teachers tell you: "Never put 'will' with the 'if' clause." Well, what I'm going to show you is that sometimes, yeah, you can. This is the problem with English: There's always exceptions to the rules. Today we're going to look at some of those exceptions. Okay? Let's see what happens. Okay. So now we're going to look at a few different types of mixtures, if you want to call it that, with the "if" clauses. But before I start to show you these examples, I want you to understand that these mixed conditionals are all about context. You can generally understand what is going on, what the relationship between the two verbs are by looking at the context, looking at the time, looking at the place, looking at the situation that's going on, and should... It usually should be very clear, but in case you're wondering how to construct these so you can use them yourselves, I'll show you with a few examples. Okay? These are in no particular order. They're just examples, and we're going to look at them individually.

Grab Your Free 17-Point WordPress Pre-Launch PDF Checklist: http://vid.io/xqRL Conditional Form Creation - Make Fields Appear Or Disappear Based On User Input Grab your free 17-Point WordPress Pre-Launch PDF Checklist: http://vid.io/xqRL Conditional forms are great of user experience because you can collect lots of different types of data without sacrificing user experience. The forms you create can change based on user input. Conditional form functionality is usually reserved for premium plugins like Gravity Forms, but there are a few free form builders that can do it. Caldera forms has a free version and a paid version. The free version is able to create conditional input fields and it's the plugin we use in this tutorial. The first thing we have to do is install the Caldera forms plugin. To install this plugin please log into your WordPress dashboard, hover over Plugins and then click on Add New. On the next page type "Caldera" into the search bar. The plugin we want should be the first one in the top left. Click on the Install Now button and then click Activate after it's installed. Once activated you will have a new menu item called Caldera Forms in the left-hand WordPress admin menu. Click on the Caldera link and then click on New Form to start building a form. You can choose to start with a template which will make your form building faster. In either case, create all of the fields that you want in the form. Once the form is created then we can start building out conditional fields. Go to the Conditions tab and then click Add Conditional Group. Give it a descriptive name. Choose whether this conditional will show or hide other form inputs. Then create the condition. Then select the form elements that will be shown or hidden if the condition is met. Once you're done, the conditions will be automatically added to the fields you selected. Now save the form and click the Preview Form button to test the functionality. If it works how you think it should you can get the short code from the Form Settings page and add the form to any page you like.
