Hide Those Business Rules and Formulas! (HC-5)

12:18
Business rules and formulas are among the most important parts of our code, and they are top candidates for constant change. So don't expose (hard-code) them in your programs! No matter how simple, they should be hidden behind a procedure or function, usually a function, especially for formulas. That way, it is defined in one place and can be easily maintained. In this video, Steven shows examples of this process, and emphasizes that even with the most obvious rules, you can never assume it will stay correct. ================================================== Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Destiny 2: Forsaken - Being Rewarded By The Queen Herself (Presenting An Offering To The Oracle)

03:43
Just a quick video showing what happens when you give an offering (obtained through Petra's weekly bounty) to the Oracle, aka, The Queen. Got some really nice stuff and now I have 3 Reverie pieces of armour allowing me to melt even more than I was. Also hit 515, hopefully that's close to raid ready. Also got some special bounties which reward me with the Dreaming City exclusive perk, that's nice. Aside from that I hope you enjoy this short but eventful video. Not sure if I'll do one on the Ascendant Challenge as I already beat it, but might do it anyway.

Oracle Exadata Smart Scan - Limitations and Best Practices

03:21
Smart Scan is a wonderful capability, but you don't always get it. It's impossible for many execution plans, and this is a major restriction. If you think about what a Smart Scan actually does, it delivers individual columns, individual rows back to the instance. Now, a buffer cache can accept only blocks. Therefore, Smart Scan cannot possibly put those columns of rows into the buffer cache. It's simply not formatted appropriately. So, a Smart Scan has to return values directly into the session's PGA or, to put it another way, the only access method that can use Smart Scan is direct read. Well, what access methods can use direct read? There are only two, which are table full scan and index fast full scan. Any other access method, typically index range scan, table access by row ID, cannot use a Smart Scan. The second major issue, there are strict limitations of the type of objects that can be accessed through Smart Scan. It really is only heap tables. You can't use indexes. You can't use clusters. You can't use IOTs. Heap tables only. Perhaps hardest to track down and giving sometimes very erratic results is that Smart Scan can be interrupted by various conditions. You've met all the requirements for Smart Scan, directory and so on, got the right execution plan. The Smart Scan starts and then hits something that causes a problem. Issues that we know cause problems are, for instance, read consistency, also delayed block cleanout, change rows. Any of those issues and a few others mean that the storage tier will have to interrupt its Smart Scan, deliver complete blocks into that buffer cache, let your session then do what is necessary to the block, and only then can the Smart Scan proceed. Now, in order to maximize the use of Smart Scan, there may be quite a lot of work. Very often, you'll have to adjust your index structures. Making them invisible is a nice technique there. There are many, many, many parameters that can influence the likelihood of achieving a Smart Scan, and almost inevitably you're going to be rewriting a lot of hint SQL and putting hints in it to get the correct execution plans that can enable a Smart Scan to occur. This is all because of one fundamental problem; the optimizer is not in any way aware of the Exadata. The optimizer develops an execution plan in exactly the way it would without the Exadata storage. The use of Smart Scan, the awareness of Exadata comes at the next level down. The optimizer develops the plan through a normal pass and then passes it through to the SQL execution engine, and it's the SQL execution engine that determines, on a case-by-case basis, whether to use the Smart Scan. This means that you might develop a plan and execute the statement 50 times. Forty-nine times, you get a Smart Scan. The 50th time, for whatever reason, the SQL execution engine decides not to. This can result in somewhat erratic performance.

For more information, visit: https://www.intellimagic.com/z-os-products/intellimagic-vision-for-z-os This video was originally recorded in our webinar: IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS Tape Version 8.8. Most Oracle VSM’s have a buffer or cache that is used to temporarily hold a tape volume’s data. This video shows how IntelliMagic Vision can be used to determine how that buffer capacity is being used and what percent of the tape reads are buffer hits which give better mount performance. These are broken down by VSM Management Classes since you generally expect different workload characteristics from different management classes.

When Dynamic Becomes Static: The Next Step in Web Caching Techniques: Wim Godden @nginxconf 2014

30:12
When your site gets swamped by a huge amount of visitors, tools like Varnish ESI can improve scalability for static sites, but when user-specific content is needed, a hit to the backend webserver is still needed, causing scalability issues. We'll look at a new Nginx module which implements a fast and scalable solution to this problem, changing the way developers think about designing sites with user-specific content and changing the way data is (pre)processed for dynamic websites. Wim Godden has been working with open source technologies since 1997 and has been involved in open source projects such as OpenX and PHPCompatibility. Next to web development, he's worked with a wide range of technologies (from database clusters to Internet backbone design) and focuses a lot of his time on high-scalability projects and on coaching/training web engineers.

Rihanna Hit Back At The Fan Who Mocking LeBron James : "B*tch, the King is still the King"

00:12
After a weeklong layoff, the NBA playoffs resumed Thursday at Oracle Arena with Kevin Durant reminding everyone why Golden State made him such a priority in free agency last offseason. The Warriors routed the Cleveland Cavaliers 113-91 in Game 1 of the best-of-seven NBA Finals behind 38 points from Durant in the third straight championship matchup between these two teams. “We could be a lot better than we were tonight,” Durant said. “I’m only as good as my teammates. And Steph [Curry] and Klay [Thompson] and Draymond [Green] and Zaza [Pachulia] and the rest of the guys, we just complement each other, try to complement each other and try to make the game easier for each other.” It was an impressive start to “The Trilogy” as the clubs combined for 65 first-quarter points before a sellout crowd of 19,596, putting to rest any concerns about rust from the long break between the conference finals and the NBA’s main event. Rihanna, a noted LeBron James fan, didn’t let the Warriors’ domination in Game 1 of the NBA Finals spoil her fun at Oracle Arena. In fact, amidst a Cavaliers annihilation, she bowed to LeBron, and then came back at the Golden State fans behind her and dabbed with authority. so watch Rihanna Hit Back At The Fan Who Mocking LeBron James : "B*tch, the King is still the King."

Solving Performance & Capacity Issues

06:18
Reliant Technology http://www.reliant-technology.com 1.877.227.0828 First things that I would look at if I was having, let's say, performance problems on, in an environment, is I would go and check the overall health of the storage array. How do you do that? You go and you look at performance data generated by the SPs. A few things that I would look at SP utilization. You want to make sure that your storage processors, or each storage processors is not being more than 50% utilized. Well, why only 50%? A reason I say that is because they're meant to be redundant SPs, so, if one SP were to fail, you want to ensure that the other SP has enough capacity or CPU cycles on it to be able to take on the load from the other SP in the event of failure. Another thing that you would consider would be cache utilization. Take a look at the dirty pages on the storage processors and take a look and see if it's being over utilized. In a storage array, especially on VNXs, you can run into a situation that's called force flushing. Basically what this means is that the SP cache is at 100%. When this happens, the storage array basically tells all of your systems that I'm not going to take anymore IOs until I can dump some of this cache down to disk. When you've got an environment, let's say, that's high IO utilization, but it's on the wrong type of disks. For example, I've got an Oracle database that is writing data files to SATA disk. In this situation, your SATA disk is not able to keep up with the transactions coming from the database. Roughly between 70 to 85 IOPS. If you've got a RAID group that, let's say, of eight disks, after your rate calculations and everything over, you only have a specific subset of IOPS that you can actually use. If your database is an OLTP type database, where it's constantly hammering the disks, then the RAID group will not be able to keep up with the amount of writes coming in from the host. The storage array will then take the majority of those writes and it'll write it into cache. That way, the system is allowed to continue working and the array is saying I'm going to load this into cache and I'm going to dump it into disk. I get three cycles. If you run into an environment like this, what can happen is your cache will quickly fill up. Once the cache has filled up, your array will hit what is called forced flushing. During this time, the storage processor will no longer accept any more writes into cache until it can dump those dirty pages down into the disks. You'll have situations where, basically, the SP cache is unable to keep up with the amount of writes coming in from the host and write them to the disk in a timely fashion. This can be very detrimental to the performance on your system and it can cause outages. That would be a thing to look at. Is my cache being heavily utilized? If so, why? Which environment is basically writing to the wrong type of disks? Once you identify that environment, you can make strides to moving it to faster spindles. In that example, if I were to move those data files or those LUNs for that Oracle database from a SATA tier to a fibre channel tier, that will reduce the cache hit rate on my storage processor and it'll increase overall performance on the system. You can move it to a different type of disk, like in our previous example, or you can add additional spindles into the pool that that system resides in. Back into the previous example, let's say that environment is on fibre channel disks, but the amount of fibre channel disks that I have in that pool is not sufficient to give the amount of IOPS that I need. So, you can add additional disks, which will give you additional spindles and it'll distribute that throughput across the additional spindles and it'll give you the performance that you need. Another option you can do, which is becoming fairly popular these days, you add an EFD tier to your storage array. What is EFD? They're solid state disks that act as another layer of cache for your system. VNXs have what's called FAST cache and you can add, I think, up to 5-10 disks into this FAST cache tier and it basically acts as another layer to be able to handle any type of burst IO coming from your system. Let's say your sustained IO is something that your SATA tier can handle or your SAS tier can handle. But every now and then, you'll have an event where you have some burst IOPS and you see it. You see some peaks in your performance log. Well, having that EFD tier there will give the array that wiggle room that it needs to be able to handle that IO event to where you're not having an array wide performance issue.

News Update: Oracle Sues Micron Over DRAM Price Fixing

00:59
"The world's third largest software maker, Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL) announced a lawsuit alleging Micron (NYSE:MU) of price fixing. According to the suit, Micron colluded with other manufacturers to artificially inflate the price of DRAM (dynamic random access memory). Between 1998 and 2002, Sun bought more than $2 billion worth of DRAM, the lawsuit said. Micron already admitted to its involvement in a criminal price-fixing case, but was granted amnesty due to the fact that it was the first to step forward, something that may limit its liability in the case. Oracle bought Sun in 2010 for about $7 billion. SmarTrend is bullish on shares of Oracle and our subscribers were alerted to buy on September 07, 2010 at $23.80. The stock has risen 13.2% since the alert was issued. "
