Welcome back to another episode. I’m sitting here in sunny San Diego, although it’s not so sunny right now and we have a lovely sunset happening behind us. My guest today is the amazing and very talented Franziska Iseli who is Swiss but lives in Australia so we’re doing a little United Nations here today. Franziska – Exactly, neutral ground. Melanie - Neutral ground. Well Canadians aren’t exactly neutral but Switzerland is. We wanted to share some branding tips. We were at a conference with 3000 people, we just watched Daymond John from Shark Tank, the US version of Shark Tank, and Franziska is going to share some branding tips because she does some really interesting things with her company in Australia called Basic Bananas when they’re trying to get new clients into their marketing programs. So Franziska, I’m going to pass it over to you to share some of those branding tips on how to attract clients to your event management business. Franziska – Well, thanks for having me. Melanie and I were talking about what would be the most valuable thing for you right now and, we run a lot of events, and we run a marketing agency so branding is a big thing for us, and one thing, even going to events like this here, which was really well executed; we go to lots of events and conferences and different types of events and one things that a lot of event planners are not doing very well is the whole branding aspect. There always seems to be just stuff, even the goody bags. I am so over the goody bags. Even the one here, it’s just crap. I mean… Melanie - it’s just promotional materials. Franziska – Yah, it doesn’t really add value. They do it because they get money from the sponsors but for us as customers or clients it doesn’t add any value. So rethinking the whole goody bag maybe you can make it cool and have cooler stuff in there and keep it on brand. Even if you do a goody bag and you’re environmentally friendly, but then you have stuff in there that’s really bad for the environment then it’s not aligned with your brand. So that detail is really important. As soon as people walk into your conference or events, make them feel special. The ones we do, and you’re welcome to copy it if it’s suitable for your business or your clients, when people walk into our Basic Bananas events we give them a lei. You’ve seen that. It’s fun. They walk in and it matches our brand because the whole tings is fun, we live on the beach so we give them a Hawaiian lei and it makes them talk. So that’s one thing, when they walk into your event, what is something that you can do to make them feel special? Maybe you can give them a little chocolate. Make sure it’s branded! Then everything you do at the event, if you give them a notepad. If you give them a pen, if you give them little snacks or little jars, make sure they’re branded. It’s so easy to brand all of that and of course what happens if you do that, when I walk away from your event, I walk away with a little jar of branded chocolate nuts for example with your branding on it and maybe a cute quote that is fitting with your brand, I walk away with a pen that is really cool not just a dodgy one but with your colors and brand on it, and I walk away with a notepad that is really cool. Then, you know, you ask yourself how do I get more clients? That’s how you get more clients, because it’s going to lie around in my office and people are going to come in and ask ‘what’s this cool thing and where did you get it?” Well I went to this conference and it was awesome and you should check them out. So suddenly your little gadgets do the job for you if they’re cool. They can’t be daggy so don’t do crappy fridge magnets. It has to be classy, it has to be useful and it has to add value. TYPOLOGY: Internal Company Event/Company Convention LOCATION: Convento do Beato, Lisbon, Portugal FOCUS To make a high-impact presentation of the company's brand strategies, surprising all those in attendance and fostering their involvement in, and commitment to, each brand's strategy and goals CREATIVE IDEA Taking our inspiration from the event's name and brand image, "Top Brands/Top Cities/Top Clients", we created a "city" inside the Convento do Beato, where all the event content was screened. The city changed constantly throughout to suit each individual brand's mood and the particular moment in the event programme. The event began with a dance performance. Interacting with the projection screen, the dancers "travelled" to the event's six featured cities. This was followed by a presentation of the various brand strategies, with images of the relevant "branded" city serving as backdrop. Once this more formal part of the event had been concluded, the venue was completely transformed in time for dinner, the Route to Market Prize Ceremony and a performance by Marisa, a Portuguese singer who has earned international acclaim.
