BBC - Italy Unpacked: The Art of the Feast

59:02
Andrew Graham-Dixon and chef Giorgio Locatelli travel through Italy exploring the country's history, culture, food, art and landscape. Their journey begins in Bologna, the capital of Emilia-Romagna, one of the richest regions in Italy. They find out why the city is know as la Dotta (the Learned), la Grassa (the Fat) and la Rossa (the Red), while visiting its shops, art institutions and the oldest university in the world. Andrew and Giorgio experience the social and friendly atmosphere of the region and meet fishermen casting huge nets at the mouth of the river Po. From there, it is a short journey to Ferrara where they discover the legacy left by the famous dynasty d'Este, and to Modena, home of balsamic vinegar and Ferrari. Finally, Giorgio reveals the source of modern Italian cuisine - at the Palatina Library in Parma he views an original copy of the first cook book of the newly united Italy - while Andrew admires Correggio's magnificent fresco in the dome of Parma Cathedral.

Italy Vacation Travel Video Guide

51:36
Travel video about destination Italy. Bella Italia! An historic picture book, from the snow covered Alps in the north to the dreamy lagoon city of Venice whose palaces are built on wooden stakes and whose ‘Carnevale’ is world famous. From the romantic hill landscape of Tosca where the aromas once inspired Leonardo Da Vinci, to Rome, the city that during antiquity was the centre of the Roman Empire and that is now the seat of the Catholic Pope. To Sicily in the south, an island of gods and natural forces. A journey through time in one of the most beautiful counties in Central Europe. Venice, a town with a hundred and twenty churches. The largest and most famous is the Basilica Di San Marco and, due to its magnificence, it is also called, ‘The Golden Basilica’. Byzantine elements and Late Gothic lines unite in the beautiful domed ceiling of the Basilica. With magnificent mosaics, icons and frescos, this pre-Christianity setting takes visitors to the Orient. The Canal Grande is regarded as Venice’s main street. It weaves through the main lagoon city past palaces, churches and houses. The boat service called, Vaporetto, plus gondolas and small motorboats, replace buses, cars and bicycles. Pope Pius The Second was born in Corsignano. At the height of his papacy he ordered the Florentine architect, Rosselino, to build a cathedral with a Bishop’s Palace and further palaces. In only a few years of building the only city of the Renaissance was founded and was then renamed Pienza, The City Of Pius. At approximately one hundred and ninety seven thousand acres and divided into over seven hundred wine growing estates in the hill region between Florence and Siena, is a name famous all over the world for its wine: Chianti! The region’s first vines were planted by the Etruscans and in the early Middle Ages it was the monks of Vallombrosa who cleared the uninhabited hill slopes and cultivated the first vineyards. Italy is always worth a visit. With its great variety of natural landscapes and cultures it is a land of joie de vivre that enchants both body and soul. Visit Rome - 5 Tips for Visiting Rome, Italy

03:31
Heading to Rome & Looking for Some Helpful Advice on Visiting the Eternal City Roma? Well here are five tips to help travelers get more out of their visit to one of the most wonderful cities in the world, Rome, Italy. #1. Pre-book tickets to the Coliseum, The Vatican Museums and any other sight you can as the lines in Rome are insane. #2. Eat the local pizza. The water in Rome is famous and that helps make for an even more amazing pizza, also you don't have to share your pizza so get what ever you want on it! #3. Pick & Choose your Roman sights. There is so much to see in Rome that you can't do it all in one trip. So pick the ones you want to see the most and focus on those as you may get burned out if you try to do too much. #4. Bring good walking shoes as you will be seeing a lot of sights one after another and the actual tourist part of Rome is very walkable, but with cobblestones and lots of sights your feet will need the support. #5. The Pope has his audience on Wednesday mornings so get there early for good seats. #6. BONUS: all hotels in Rome will seem expensive so spend the money and stay closer to the historic center or in the historic center as you will save time. Tips to make local Italian friends on your next trip to Italy

02:11
Book a lesson with Italian teacher Stefano on italki here- https://go.italki.com/2Be8EXu Hello everyone! It’s Stefano here and I teach Italian on Italki.com. Today I would like to give you some advice to bond with Italians faster and improve your conversational skills while on vacation in Italy. Let’s get started! Places: let’s talk about a few places you can go to, to easily speak with some Italians. For example go to a bar in the morning. When I say bar I mean the Italian idea of bar that is a sort of coffe shop/café a lot of people go to in the morning to get their “colazione” (breakfast). In the night go to a pub or club. Italians love clubbing and I am sure you’ll fine a lot of people to talk to there! Small talk: I know small talk is pretty embarassing and people tend to avoid it if possible but this could be a good idea to bond with Italians. Even if your Italian is not very good you should still try to say hi and introduce yourself in Italian. Italians will suddenly understand you’re not from Italy but they would really appreciate it and start a conversation with you! Listen to what other people say to each other! I know overhearing is not a nice thing to do but trying to listen to other people’s conversation will really help you to understand how Italians really talk to each other and learn some new words and expressions. And then if you’re brave enough and if the people you’re listening to are talking about a topic you like you could just drop in the conversation! Thanks for watching the video. Don't forget to subscribe to the italki YouTube channel for more tips on learning Italian . Take a lesson with me on italki.com by clicking on my teacher profile link in the description.

Liguria (Italy) Vacation Travel Video Guide

51:31
Travel video about destination Liguria in Italy. Extending south to Tuscany, Italy’s mountainous western coast on the Gulf of Genoa is called, Liguria, a picture book country with paradisiacal cliffs, remote villages, bucket loads of sunshine and a region known as, Cinque Terre, that comprises five villages. Our journey begins in Genoa, the fifth largest city in Italy. A guided tour of the harbour is a good way to gain an understanding of this city which became a powerful economic force in the sixteenth century. The Palazzo Reale was once the residence of the Savoy-Piedmont royal family, with bel-etage, gallery and hanging garden. Monterosso Al Mare is the first and largest of the five villages that comprise Cinque Terre, on the route south. It extends across two bays and two districts, separated by a rock. The modern district of Fegina has a long waterfront promenade, a well-kept sandy beach and a good range of accommodation. Vernazza is considered to be the most beautiful of the five villages mainly because of its location within a splendid bay. Corniglia has no direct access to the sea, but extends along a massive rocky plateau about a hundred metres above the sea. On the hilly outskirts is the San Pietro Church, built in 1334, with an elegant, decorated facade and a rose window of Carrara marble. Portovenere is situated on a long promontory in a remarkable location on the Ligurian coast. Just outside the famous Old Town are some splendid exclusive apartments, each with their own character. It was here that the Romans founded Veneris Portus, the ‘Port Of Venus’. The magic of Liguria is based on the contrast between a narrow Mediterranean coastal strip and steep, barren mountains. Whether you walk this scenic landscape or explore it by train or ship, Liguria is a special dream of romance and beauty. -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. http://www.merchantissimo.com . Cefalù in Sicily, Italy - Cefalù, a wonderful town and a small port on the northern coast of Sicily, Italy - promoted by www.merchantissimo.com Cefalù from Wikipedia Cefalù (Sicilian: Cifalù, Greek: Κεφαλοίδιον, Diod., Strabo, or Κεφαλοιδὶς, Ptol.; Latin: Cephaloedium, or Cephaloedis, Pliny) is a city and comune in the province of Palermo, located on the northern coast of Sicily, Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea about 75 km east from the provincial capital and 185 km west of Messina. The town is one of the major tourist attractions in the region. Of Greek foundation, the city evidently derived its name from its situation on a lofty and precipitous rock, forming a bold headland (Κεφαλὴ) projecting into the sea. But though its name proves it to have been of Greek origin, no mention is found of it in Thucydides, who expressly says that Himera was the only Greek colony on this coast of the island (vi. 62); it is probable that Cephaloedium was at this time merely a fortress (φρούριον) belonging to the Himeraeans, and may very likely have been first peopled by refugees after the destruction of Himera. Its name first appears in history at the time of the Carthaginian expedition under Himilco, 396 BC, when that general concluded a treaty with the Himeraeans and the inhabitants of Cephaloedium. (Diod. xiv. 56.) But after the defeat of the Carthaginian armament, Dionysius the Elder made himself master of Cephaloedium, which was betrayed into his hands. (Ibid. 78.) At a later period we find it again independent, but apparently on friendly terms with the Carthaginians, on which account it was attacked and taken by Agathocles, 307 BC. (Id. xx. 56.) In the First Punic War it was reduced by the Roman fleet under Atilius Calatinus and Scipio Nasica, 254 BC, but by treachery and not by force of arms. (Id. xxiii., Exc. Hoesch. p. 505.) Cicero speaks of it as apparently a flourishing town, enjoying full municipal privileges; it was, in his time, one of the civitates decumanae which paid the tithes of their corn in kind to the Roman state, and suffered severely from the oppressions and exactions of Verres. (Cic. Verr. ii. 5. 2, iii. 43.) It also minted coins. No subsequent mention of it is found in history, but it is noticed by the geographers Strabo, Pliny, and Ptolemy, among the towns of Sicily, and at a later period its name is still found in the Itineraries.

5 Things American Tourists Shouldn't Wear in Europe

05:16
Please Note: Young People Wear Many of These Styles Throughout Europe. These tips are geared toward 35+ year old travelers. Thanks for watching! Grab a Wolters World Shirt http://www.woltersworld.com/shop Heading to Europe & Not Sure What to Pack? Here are a few things that my fellow US travelers may want to avoid packing if they are traveling to Europe. 1. Baseball Caps: Europeans in general do not wear baseball caps, especially backwards. You would be better served to wear a more traditional hat. You will see an occasional NY Yankee hat, but why not buy the fancy hat you always wanted instead? 2. Athletic Wear: Europeans tend to wear athletic wear to do sports, not to wear around town. There is a trend of more athleisurewear in Europe, but it is not to the extent that there is in US. 3. Khakis: the omnipresent US male pant choice is not something you will see too often in Europe. Go for colored pants or jeans. If you want khaki like pants wear Chinos instead of Dockers. The pants you will see are a thinner cut or "skinnier" fit than in the US. 4. Oversized US University Sweatshirts. 5. Sport Shoes or High Heals: US sport shoes and white socks are not quite as popular in Europe as they are in the US. You may be better off with Urban Street shoes like Vans instead. Also, women should be careful with high heels as with all the cobblestone it is easy to hurt your ankles.
